Ha Long Bay guide: day cruise or overnight, quieter routes, Hanoi transfer
Ha Long Bay is not one sight but a protected seascape of around 1,500 square kilometres of limestone islands off Quang Ninh, inscribed by UNESCO in 1994 and 2000 and, since 2023, part of the wider Ha Long Bay – Cat Ba Archipelago World Heritage site. Every tourist boat that leaves Tuan Chau or Bai Chay follows one of eight routes licensed by the bay's management board, and the route on your ticket decides almost everything: which caves you climb into, whether you kayak, and how many other boats share the view. Choose the route first and the boat second.

- Suggested time
- 2 days, 1 night on a boat (a long day trip at minimum)
- Where to stay
- On board a licensed overnight boat; on land, Bai Chay or Tuan Chau Island
- Season and timing
- The national tourism site describes September to November as cool and clear, December to March as misty, April and May as sunny, and June to August as monsoon months when visits are unpredictable. Boats can be suspended at short notice when storms approach.
The short answer
Give Ha Long Bay two days and one night on a boat if you can. The drive from Hanoi takes about two to two and a half hours each way, so a day trip spends as long on the road as on the water, while an overnight cruise lets you reach the farther routes (VHL3 and VHL4), which the provincial newspaper describes as relatively quiet while the near-shore routes VHL1 and VHL2 are overloaded at peak times. Sleep on board; if you need a night on land, stay in Bai Chay near Ha Long International Cruise Port or on Tuan Chau Island by the main cruise harbour. Book a cruise that includes the transfer from Hanoi unless you are confident with buses and taxis, and check which route number and port your ticket names.
Pick the route before the boat
Ha Long Bay's management board licenses eight sightseeing routes, and cruise companies sell trips built on them. When we checked on 2026-10-03, the board's site listed them as follows. VHL1 takes in Thien Cung and Dau Go caves on Dau Go island, then Stone Dog, Ba Hang, Incense Burner (Dinh Huong) and Fighting Cocks (Trong Mai) islets. VHL2 is the classic: Soi Sim and Ti Top islands, Sung Sot Cave, Me Cung Cave and the boat or kayak passage through Luon Cave. VHL3 goes to the Cua Van floating culture centre, Tien Ong Cave and the enclosed lagoons of Ba Ham. VHL4 heads farther out to Hang Co (Thien Canh Son) cave, the Vung Vieng area and the Cong Do island overnight anchorage. VHL5 and VHL6 run towards Gia Luan and the edge of Lan Ha Bay on the Hai Phong side; VHL7 combines routes 1 to 4 and applies only to exploration cruise yachts; VHL8 is a coastal run between the three passenger ports.
Quang Ninh's provincial newspaper wrote in July 2025 that routes VHL1 and VHL2, being close to shore and packed with famous caves and beaches, draw the most visitors and become overloaded at peak times, while VHL3 and VHL4 are relatively quiet; until recently the farther routes mostly drew foreign guests on overnight boats. That is the main decision. If you want Sung Sot and Ti Top, accept company and go early; if you want calm water, a kayak in a lagoon and fewer boats around you, choose a cruise that sails VHL3 or VHL4, which in practice usually means an overnight boat. The same article said routes connecting Ha Long Bay with Lan Ha Bay were not yet officially in operation, so if a cruise promises both bays, ask exactly how it gets from one to the other.
Never hire a boat from someone approaching you outside the port. The board's own advice is not to stop for roadside touts on the drive into Ha Long or near Tuan Chau, to go into the port terminal, and to buy route tickets and get advice from the board's guides there.
What the near-shore routes are really like
VHL1 and VHL2 are the routes most visitors see, and they have earned their popularity. On VHL2, Sung Sot Cave on the Bo Hon islands is described by the management board as the largest cave yet found in the bay, about 20 metres above the sea and reached by a steep but shaded path. Ti Top Island is the only island in the bay named by Ho Chi Minh, after his 1962 visit with the Soviet cosmonaut Gherman Titov; it has a crescent of sand at its foot and a climb to a summit viewpoint. Luon Cave is a tunnel through the base of an island that opens into an enclosed lagoon, where the board says visitors can go by rowing boat or kayak.
On VHL1, Thien Cung Cave on Dau Go island sits about 20 metres above sea level with a floor of around 3,000 square metres and lit stalactites; neighbouring Dau Go Cave is one of the earliest known in the bay. The boat then passes the named islets, including Dinh Huong, which the national tourism site notes is the islet printed on the 200,000-dong note, and the leaning pair of Trong Mai, the Fighting Cocks or Kissing Rocks.
Crowding is real on these routes at busy times. Thanh Nien newspaper reported visitors shuffling step by step through Sung Sot, Thien Cung and Dau Go and thousands crowding Ti Top's small beach on a peak summer weekend. If you book a near-shore day cruise, avoid Vietnamese public holidays and summer weekends when you can, and ask the operator whether the boat leaves early in the morning.

Make time for the local food
What to eat and where to look

Cha muc (Ha Long squid cake)
Cuttlefish pounded by hand with pork fat, onion, garlic and pepper, shaped into patties and fried until golden. Quang Ninh's tourism promotion agency calls it one of the province's most celebrated dishes.
- Where to look
- Restaurants and breakfast stalls in Bai Chay and Hon Gai, and on many cruise menus; it is also sold packaged as a souvenir.
- Fit it into your day
- Eat it the local way, with steamed rice rolls (banh cuon) or sticky rice, as breakfast or a light lunch before or after the boat.
Contains seafood and pork fat; fried, so it is filling — share a plate.
Dried squid (muc kho)
Cuttlefish sun-dried and then machine-dried, grilled over charcoal with salt and chilli, fried, or stir-fried with tamarind. The provincial agency describes Ha Long's version as especially tasty and crisp.
- Where to look
- Seafood shops and markets in Ha Long; grilled to order at seafood restaurants.
- Fit it into your day
- A snack with a drink in the evening, or bought vacuum-packed to take home.
Chewy and salty; check the weight and price before a vendor starts grilling.
Ghe (sentinel crab)
A small swimming crab that the provincial tourism agency lists among Quang Ninh's must-try dishes, usually steamed, salted or cooked with tamarind.
- Where to look
- From street seafood stalls to smarter restaurants around Bai Chay and Hon Gai.
- Fit it into your day
- Make it the centre of a shared seafood dinner on your night on land.
Shellfish; at seafood restaurants confirm the price per kilogram and the weight before cooking.
Why one night on board changes the trip
The farther routes are where an overnight boat earns its price. On VHL3, the Cua Van floating culture centre in Tung Sau cove on Hang Trai island displays the life of the bay's former fishing communities, and the management board lists kayaking and traditional rowing-boat rides around the old fishing village. The Ba Ham lakes are a chain of sea lagoons linked by low tunnels under sheer limestone walls. On VHL4, Hang Co cave is reached by about 70 stone steps, and the board says you can kayak from there to the surrounding islands; the Cong Do overnight anchorage is pitched for sunrise and sunset on deck, squid fishing and morning tai chi, with the small enclosed Tung-Ang ecosystem about 100 metres from the moorings.
Overnight boats anchor only at designated points, and the ticket is priced by route and number of nights. When we checked on 2026-10-03, the board listed overnight fees of 550,000 dong for route 2 with one night and 750,000 dong with two nights, and 500,000 and 650,000 dong for routes 3 or 4; one night means at most 24 hours from departure. Day fees were 250,000 dong for VHL1, VHL2 and VHL5, 200,000 dong for VHL3 and VHL4, 150,000 dong for VHL6, 600,000 dong for VHL7 and 70,000 dong for the coastal VHL8. Most cruise packages include the fee; check that yours does, and which route it pays for.
Children under 1.2 metres (or under seven) enter free, and foreign children aged seven to under sixteen get 20 per cent off on showing a passport at the board's ticket counter in the port.

Getting there from Hanoi
The national tourism site says most visitors book a packaged cruise that includes transport to and from Hanoi, and that is the simplest choice: the shuttle drops you at the right port terminal for your boat. Ha Long Bay boats leave from Tuan Chau International Cruise Port on Tuan Chau Island, from Ha Long International Cruise Port at Bai Chay, and from the smaller Nam Cau Trang port; the management board's route descriptions start from Tuan Chau or Ha Long port. Confirm which one your boat uses before you set off.
By road, VnExpress put the trip from the capital to the bay at two to two and a half hours in April 2026. Independent travellers can take a bus to Ha Long City or Hai Phong and a taxi to the port, according to the national tourism site, which also mentions seaplane charters from Noi Bai Airport. A high-speed railway from Hanoi to Quang Ninh began construction in April 2026, with completion expected at the end of 2028 and its terminus at Ha Long station in Tuan Chau ward; until then, the road is the way in.
Boat departures follow the season. When we checked on 2026-10-03, the board's site said that from 1 April to 31 October boats may leave from 5:00 and must be back by 20:00, and from 1 November to 31 March from 5:30 and back by 19:00. The main caves on VHL1 and VHL2 were listed as open from 7:30 (Me Cung from 8:00) until 17:30 in summer and 17:00 in winter.
Weather, storms and what can cancel a cruise
The bay's moods change with the season: the national tourism site describes cool, clear skies from September to November, mist from December to March that softens the islands, sunshine and breezes in April and May, and an unpredictable monsoon from June to August. Misty winter days are atmospheric but flat for photographs; autumn is the safest bet for clear views.
Storms close the bay. In June 2025 the authorities stopped licensing overnight boats and ordered tourist boats back to land by 18:00 ahead of Storm Wutip, and in July 2026 Quang Ninh suspended permits for overnight and evening boats from midday on 3 July as Storm Maysak approached. Book a cruise with clear rules on refunds or rescheduling for weather, keep a spare day in your plan during the summer and early-autumn storm season, and do not book a tight onward flight on the evening you return.
On board, follow the bay's rules: the management board asks visitors not to bring single-use plastic on the trip, not to throw anything into the water, not to break stalactites or carve in caves, not to buy coral and not to buy from small vendor boats that come alongside.

Combining Ha Long with the rest of the northeast
If Ha Long Bay's near-shore routes sound too busy, there are two natural alternatives. Bai Tu Long Bay, which the management board's fee-exemption rules also cover, and Lan Ha Bay off Cat Ba Island on the Hai Phong side, part of the same World Heritage site since 2023, both have their own cruises. Cat Ba also has a national park with hiking trails, Hospital Cave and the Cat Ba langur, which the national tourism site calls one of the world's most endangered primates.
Yen Tu, the Buddhist pilgrimage site in Quang Ninh, lies between Hanoi and Ha Long and will have its own station on the future high-speed line. Treat it as a separate trip rather than a stop squeezed into a cruise transfer. Back in Hanoi, keep a night between the cruise and any onward flight or overnight train.
Practical questions
Is a day trip to Ha Long Bay from Hanoi worth it?
It works if you have no other option, but the drive is about two to two and a half hours each way, so much of the day is spent on the road, and day cruises usually sail the busiest near-shore routes. One night on board gives you a calmer evening and morning on the water and access to the quieter routes.
Which Ha Long Bay route is least crowded?
Quang Ninh's provincial newspaper describes routes VHL3 and VHL4, farther from shore, as relatively quiet, while VHL1 and VHL2 become overloaded at peak times. Ask the cruise company which route number its boat follows.
How much is the Ha Long Bay entrance fee?
It depends on the route. When we checked on 2026-10-03, the management board listed 250,000 dong for VHL1 and VHL2, 200,000 dong for VHL3 and VHL4, and 500,000 to 750,000 dong for overnight stays depending on route and nights. Most cruise packages include it; check yours.
Which port do Ha Long Bay cruises leave from?
Mostly from Tuan Chau International Cruise Port on Tuan Chau Island or Ha Long International Cruise Port in Bai Chay. Your booking should name the port; transfers from Hanoi take you to the right terminal.
What is the best month to visit Ha Long Bay?
The national tourism site describes September to November as cool and clear, with mist from December to March and an unpredictable monsoon from June to August. Allow a buffer day in storm season.
Can cruises be cancelled because of the weather?
Yes. When storms approach, Quang Ninh suspends permits for boats, often overnight cruises first, as happened in June 2025 and July 2026. Book with clear weather-cancellation terms and keep your onward plans flexible.
