Vietnam festivals and events 2027: month-by-month calendar

One holiday dominates Vietnam's year: Tet, the Lunar New Year, when the country goes home to family and much of daily life pauses. The rest of the calendar is a handful of public holidays, which in 2027 are mostly joined to weekends to make long breaks, and a string of lunar festivals in the north in the weeks after Tet. This calendar gives the official 2027 holiday schedule, the expected festival dates, and what each means for getting around and finding a room.

Suggested time
Tet is a week-long break for the public sector; the other holidays make three- or four-day weekends, and Vietnamese Culture Day is a single day.
Where to stay
Hanoi for Tet and the northern festivals (Lim in Bac Ninh, Yen Tu in Quang Ninh, the Hung Temple in Phu Tho); Hoi An for Mid-Autumn.
Season and timing
Avoid long-distance travel around Tet unless you book far ahead; the spring festival season in the north follows it.

The short answer

The big one is Tet: the public-sector break runs from Thursday 4 to Wednesday 10 February 2027, with Lunar New Year's Day expected on 6 February. Transport and hotels are in heavy demand and many businesses and restaurants typically close for at least the first few days, so book far ahead. Other long breaks are 16-18 April (Hung Kings), 30 April-3 May (Reunification Day and Workers' Day) and 2-5 September (National Day). Mid-Autumn falls in September or October.

How to read this calendar

The holiday dates come from the official 2027 schedule announced by the Ministry of Home Affairs and reported by the government's portal on 12 October 2026. Those breaks apply to the public sector; private employers can arrange Tet differently, so not everyone is off on the same days.

Festivals follow the lunar calendar. Where the government's schedule pins a lunar date to the Western calendar, we count from it; where the 2027 date is not yet fixed, we give the usual season. A public holiday does not by itself mean shops or sights close: only for Tet does the national tourism authority say that many businesses do.

January: New Year

New Year's Day, Friday 1 January, gives a three-day break with the weekend, from 1 to 3 January.

February: Tet, the Lunar New Year

Tet is the most important celebration of the year, a time for family reunions and for honouring ancestors. In 2027 the public-sector break runs from Thursday 4 to Wednesday 10 February, and Lunar New Year's Day should fall on Saturday 6 February. Private employers choose between several shorter patterns around the same days.

For travellers, Vietnam's tourism authority says buses, trains, planes and hotel rooms are in heavy demand, and businesses and restaurants typically close for at least the first few days of the new year. Book transport and rooms far in advance. If plans change, Vietnam's railway company requires individual Tet ticket changes or returns at least 24 hours before departure, and 48 hours for groups.

February to May: the northern spring festivals

The Yen Tu Festival in the mountains of Quang Ninh starts on the first day of the lunar year, so around 6 February, and lasts until the end of the third lunar month. Pilgrims climb to the Dong Pagoda for processions, prayers and rites. A formal opening ceremony may be on a different day.

The Lim Festival in Bac Ninh peaks on the 12th or 13th day of the first lunar month, which should be around 17-18 February. It is a three-day festival of quan ho folk singing and traditional celebrations, and draws visitors from across the country. The 2027 programmes for both festivals had not been published when we checked.

April and May: Hung Kings and the 30 April break

Hung Kings Commemoration Day, Friday 16 April, is a public holiday and makes a break from 16 to 18 April. The ceremonies at the Hung Temple in Phu Tho, with pilgrimage and processions, usually run over several days around it, which should be about 14 to 17 April.

Reunification Day, Friday 30 April, and International Workers' Day, Saturday 1 May, join up with a compensatory day into a four-day break from 30 April to 3 May.

June to August: no national holidays

There are no public holidays in June, July or August, and none of the festivals in this calendar falls in them.

September and October: National Day and Mid-Autumn

National Day, Thursday 2 September, marks independence. With a second holiday and the weekend, the public-sector break runs from 2 to 5 September.

The Mid-Autumn Festival (Tet Trung Thu) falls on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, at the full moon, normally in September or October. It is a children's festival, with lion dances, lantern processions, toys and family gatherings; Hoi An is one of the places the tourism authority highlights. The exact 2027 date had not been confirmed when we checked.

November and December: Vietnamese Culture Day

Vietnamese Culture Day, Wednesday 24 November, is on the 2027 holiday schedule as a one-day public holiday.

December has no public holiday, and the next New Year break starts on 1 January 2028.
