Mekong Delta travel guide: Can Tho, Cai Rang and Ben Tre

The Mekong Delta is Vietnam's water world: rivers the colour of caramel, orchards on islands, markets that trade from boats. Most visitors see it from a coach window and a tour boat in one long day out of Ho Chi Minh City. That day is enough for Ben Tre's coconut lanes, but an ordinary day tour never reaches the Cai Rang floating market, which is over by mid-morning. Can Tho, the delta's big and relaxed river city, is where the choice between a day trip and a night turns, and this guide helps you make it.

Suggested time
1 night at the least, 2 recommended (3 days); an optional first night at Con Phung adds the coconut country
Where to stay
Ninh Kieu, Can Tho, near the wharf for the dawn boat to Cai Rang; an optional first night at Con Phung in Vinh Long province, on the way from Ho Chi Minh City
Season and timing
The national tourism site gives December to April as the dry season, best for boat trips and floating markets, and May to November as the wet season, with an afternoon downpour that usually lasts a few hours. September to November is the flooding season and fruit ripens from June to August.

The short answer

Book one night in Can Tho at the least and two if you can, on the Ninh Kieu waterfront, so that you can take a boat to the Cai Rang floating market at dawn; an ordinary day trip from Ho Chi Minh City reaches Ben Tre in about two hours but misses the market. Book the room first, then the coach from Ho Chi Minh City on the operator's own site, and the Cai Rang tour with a licensed operator the evening before. Two key prices, checked on 17 and 18 October 2026: a coach from Ho Chi Minh City to Can Tho costs VND 210,000 on Thanh Buoi's route page, and Mekong Smile's Cai Rang tour costs VND 1,390,000 per adult on its own page.

A day trip from Ho Chi Minh City, or a night in Can Tho

Most visitors meet the Mekong Delta in a single day. Ben Tre lies about a two-hour drive from Ho Chi Minh City, and a day there holds a boat along the nipa-palm canals, a coconut-candy workshop, a ride along shaded lanes and a lunch of fried elephant ear fish; the national tourism site calls it one of the towns nearest the city and an easy place to see on a day tour. If you have one spare day, that is a good use of it, and it pairs with the Cu Chi Tunnels as the other classic day out of the city.

Saigon Adventure's own page lists a shared day tour to My Tho and Ben Tre with hotel pick-up in District 1 between 07:45 and 08:15, a group day of 9 to 10 hours, and lunch and entrance fees included, at USD 17 a person in a big group and USD 26 in a small one (checked on 18 October 2026). To go alone, take a coach to Ben Tre, where the national tourism site lists a Thao Chau Express ticket at VND 75,000 a person, and continue by Grab, which lists Ben Tre, to the old Rach Mieu ferry landing, where Con Phung's boats collect visitors (see the section on Ben Tre).

What an ordinary day trip cannot reach is the floating market. Cai Rang is busiest from about 04:00 to 09:00, and Can Tho is about 165 km and 2 h 30 min to 3 h 10 min by coach from Ho Chi Minh City on Thanh Buoi's home page, so the market falls outside a day tour's hours. Two nights in Can Tho let you arrive on the first afternoon, take the boat at dawn on the second day and still have time for the canals and orchards.

Our 14-day itinerary gives Can Tho one night, with the coach on day 12, the Cai Rang boat at dawn on day 13 and the coach back to Ho Chi Minh City the same day, and the 21-day itinerary also gives it one night. One night is the minimum that reaches the market; a second night adds the canals, Con Son and an unhurried evening. If you want quiet more than markets, an island homestay on the Ben Tre side (see the next section) suits one night better than a hotel in the city.

A note on names: under the National Assembly's Resolution 202/2025/QH15 of 12 June 2025, Ben Tre now lies in Vinh Long province, merged with Tra Vinh; Can Tho is a city at provincial level that absorbed Soc Trang and Hau Giang; and My Tho, once in Tien Giang, belongs to Dong Thap province. Old maps and some signs still use the former names.

Where to sleep: Can Tho's Ninh Kieu waterfront or an island homestay

Sleep in the centre of Can Tho, close to Ninh Kieu Wharf, Ong Pagoda, Binh Thuy Ancient House and the road to the Cai Rang boats. Ninh Kieu Wharf is a park of 7,000 square metres on the right bank of the Hau River, established in the 19th century, with a 200 m pedestrian bridge beside it that is lit by LED lights at night; in the evening a river bus tour with dinner shows the city and the Can Tho Bridge.

The budget below uses Ninh Kieu 2 Hotel, at 3 Hoa Binh Avenue in Ninh Kieu Ward, which has 108 rooms. Its own site lists the Standard Double (25 m2) at VND 950,000 a night with buffet breakfast, which is served from 06:00 to 09:00, with VAT and service charge listed among the inclusions (checked on 17 October 2026). Check-in is after 14:00 and check-out before 12:00. The hotel is on the same avenue as the Can Tho Museum.

The alternative is a night on an island, as a third night or instead of the city. The Con Phung tourist area, on the Tien River in Vinh Long province, lists its Coco Island homestay at VND 800,000 for a room for two at the standard price on Fridays to Sundays, and VND 560,000 on Mondays to Thursdays under a 30 per cent offer that excludes public holidays and Tet. The national tourism site also describes family-run homestays on Tan Phong Islet at Cai Be, such as Mekong Rustic, with home-cooked meals and fruit through the day.

Cai Rang floating market at dawn

Cai Rang is the delta's best-known floating market and a working wholesale market. It lies about 6 km from downtown Can Tho along National Highway 1A, and is a 30-minute boat ride from Ninh Kieu Wharf, according to Vietnam's rural-tourism site. That site describes hundreds of boats of all sizes gathering in one place, piled with pumpkins, watermelons, pineapples and other produce, though the number of trading boats changes from morning to morning, and Mekong Smile's tour page advises visitors to come for the river atmosphere rather than the scene in older photographs. Each trader hangs samples of the goods on a long pole at the bow, a practice called cay beo, so buyers can see from far away what each boat sells without any shouting over the engines. Trade is busiest early, so the hours before 07:00 matter most.

Breakfast comes to you. Small boats pass bowls of hu tieu, a pork-and-noodle soup, and crab noodle soup (bun rieu) between the larger boats, and others carry a charcoal stove for cloth-filter coffee. The rural-tourism site gives the busy hours as roughly 04:00 to 09:00; the national tourism site's Can Tho page says trade usually runs from 04:30 to 08:00.

Book the boat the evening before. Mekong Smile, a Can Tho operator that prints its inbound tour operator licence number on its own site, runs a Cai Rang morning tour of 5 to 6 hours at VND 1,390,000 per adult (VND 1,045,000 for a child aged 6 to 10) for a group of two or more, with pick-up from hotels in central Can Tho at 06:00 (checked on 18 October 2026; the page dates its price 12 August 2026). The price includes breakfast on the boat, the entrance fees, a rice-noodle workshop, a cacao farm, a fruit garden and a small canal, travel insurance and VAT. An earlier start puts you among the boats before the heat: the national tourism site advises boarding at Ninh Kieu Wharf at 05:00 and being on the water by 05:00 or 05:30, because by 08:00 the vendors pack up, and a 06:00 pick-up still reaches the market inside its busy hours of roughly 04:00 to 09:00. Book only with an established, licensed operator, ask for a safety briefing, and check for yourself that there are enough life jackets and escape routes.

For a quieter look at the fruit boats, Phong Dien is the second market on the small-group tour listed below. The national tourism database places it about 17 km from central Can Tho, at Cau Nhim in Nhon Ai commune; it opens at first light, is busiest from about 07:00 to 08:00 and thins out after 09:00, although some traders stay into the afternoon.

Canals, orchards and old houses around Can Tho

Can Tho is wrapped in small canals. For a small fee you can hire a rowboat for a few hours and stop at workshops where rice paper and noodles are made by hand. Fruit ripens in the orchards from June to August. Orchard visits are part of the islet tours the tourism site recommends, which include lunch with a local family; Con Son (below) is the garden island nearest the city, and Mekong Smile's Cai Rang tour includes a fruit garden stop, where mango, plum and dragon fruit may be on offer depending on the time of year.

Con Son is a small island of 70 hectares in the middle of the Hau River. From the Co Bac ferry station in Binh Thuy ward the crossing takes about 5 to 10 minutes, or you can rent a boat at Ninh Kieu Wharf. It has fruit gardens, a fish raft where you feed the fish and lessons in making southern pancakes.

Binh Thuy Ancient House, at 144 Bui Huu Nghia Street, was built in 1870 by the Duong family and blends French and Asian architecture. It was designated a national architectural and artistic monument in 2009 and has been a film location, among others for The Lover. It lies in Binh Thuy ward, so ride there by taxi or app from the waterfront. Ong Pagoda, in the town centre, was built at the end of the 19th century by Chinese descendants; its entrance hall is dim, with coils of burning incense hanging from the rafters, and the whole temple is decked in deep red.

In the evening, street food is sold at the Can Tho Night Market, which the tourism site places about 1 km west of the Hau River. Can Tho Museum, at 1 Hoa Binh Avenue, was established in 1976 and shows about 5,000 objects with English translations. No official page publishes the opening hours or ticket prices of Binh Thuy Ancient House and the Can Tho Museum.

Ben Tre and the coconut country, and Thoi Son island

Ben Tre is coconut country. The national tourism site says more than 300 coconut-candy factories stand in the area, and that most boat tours stop at a workshop where you watch the candy made, from harvest to wrapping, and taste as much as you like. Quiet lanes run into the countryside, where you can hire a bicycle, visit a brick factory where bricks are moulded and fired in huge kilns, watch mat weavers at work, or take a rowboat. Lunch is typically fried elephant ear fish, rolled in rice paper with cucumber, pineapple and herbs, or a coconut-inspired meal of coconut rice and coconut-braised shrimp.

Con Phung is the island most day tours stop at: the former seat of the Coconut Monk (Dao Dua) and his religion. The tourist area's own site lists an adult ticket at VND 50,000 and a child ticket at VND 30,000 for children from 80 cm to 1.3 m tall, with the return boat included; the ticket covers the Coconut Monk's buildings, the coconut museum, a coconut-candy workshop, coconut handicrafts and a crocodile farm (checked on 17 October 2026). It is open from 07:30 to 18:00 every day, including holidays and Tet. Its boats collect visitors at the old Rach Mieu ferry landing on the Ben Tre bank; call the tourist area's hotline when you reach the landing, so that its own boat collects you and not an intermediary's.

Con Phung fits best as a first night on the way to Can Tho, not as a detour: take the coach from Ho Chi Minh City to Ben Tre (about two hours, and a Thao Chau Express ticket at VND 75,000 a person on the national tourism site), join the tourist area's boat at the landing, sleep on the island and go on to Can Tho the next morning. The ride from Ben Tre town to the landing and a coach from Ben Tre to Can Tho are not published; Grab lists both cities, and the fallback is the coach back to Ho Chi Minh City and on with Thanh Buoi.

Thoi Son is the usual choice from My Tho. The Dong Thap tourism portal describes the island as about 1,200 hectares in the lower Tien River, 20 minutes by boat from My Tho, covered in orchards, with canoe trips under nipa palms, honey tea, coconut candy and don ca tai tu folk music. It lists tickets at VND 50,000 to VND 100,000, opening hours of 07:00 to 18:00 and about 120 minutes at one stop. If you travel on to Can Tho by road, Sa Dec has flower nurseries and the 1895 house of the lover in Marguerite Duras's novel, which is open to visitors.

Getting there: coaches, Can Tho airport, onward legs and local boats

By coach from Ho Chi Minh City. Thanh Buoi's own route page lists a service every 30 minutes, 24 hours a day, in a 34-berth coach with wifi, a blanket and water, at VND 210,000 (checked on 17 October 2026), and its home page lists the trip at 165 km and 2 h 30 min to 3 h 10 min. The route page says the company provides its own pick-up and drop-off stops in its operating areas and asks passengers leaving Can Tho to be at the departure point or bus station 30 minutes before. Its contact page lists ticket offices in Ho Chi Minh City, among them counter 23 at the Mien Tay Bus Station (395 Kinh Duong Vuong Street, An Lac Ward), and in Can Tho the Can Tho Central Bus Station on National Highway 1A in Cai Rang Ward, 29 Phan Dang Luu Street in Ninh Kieu Ward and 603 Nguyen Van Linh Street in Binh Thuy Ward. The national tourism site gives the road as 165 km along the My Thuan-Can Tho expressway. Phuong Trang (FUTA Bus Lines) sells seats, pick-up points and drop-off points on futabus.vn and in its app. A daytime departure suits the delta better than a night coach.

The UK Foreign Office advises pre-arranged transport or official taxi-hailing apps such as Grab or XanhSM, which use licensed cabs, and warns of scams by people who claim to be from these companies. The German Foreign Office advises against cyclo and motorbike taxis (xe om) after dark, warns of taxi meter fraud and counterfeit tickets from intermediaries, and reports occasional sexual assaults on overland night buses, especially against women travelling alone. Buy tickets only at official sales points. Grab lists Can Tho, Ben Tre and Vinh Long among its Vietnamese cities, and Be lists Can Tho; our transport guide covers the apps and how to buy tickets.

By air. Can Tho International Airport (VCA) lies in Thoi An Dong ward, 8 km from downtown according to Vietnam Airlines' route page, and flights come from Hanoi and Da Nang. Vietnam Airlines also lists flights to Phu Quoc, from VND 1,151,181 one way in economy for a flight on 25 October 2026, and to Con Dao, about 1 hour with one flight a day, from VND 1,335,181 for a flight on 25 October 2026 (checked on 17 October 2026). From the arrivals hall, take Grab or another official app into town; for the ride in the other direction Vietnam Airlines lists a bus at VND 5,000 from Le Hong Phong Street and a taxi at VND 100,000 to VND 150,000. The usual way from Ho Chi Minh City is the coach, not a flight.

Onward from Can Tho. For Phu Quoc the quickest way is the flight above. By sea, the fast boats leave from Rach Gia, where Phu Quoc Express boards at gate 3 of the passenger pier, at the corner of Nguyen Cong Tru and 3/2 streets in Vinh Thanh ward; our Phu Quoc guide gives both operators' timetables. No official or operator page publishes a coach or a distance for Can Tho to Rach Gia, so plan to arrive the day before an early boat. For Con Dao, the guide covers the flight and the boat from Tran De.

By boat. Boats leave from Ninh Kieu Wharf for Cai Rang, a rowboat can be hired for the canals, and the Co Bac ferry crosses to Con Son in 5 to 10 minutes. Con Phung's boats leave from the old Rach Mieu ferry landing, and Thoi Son is 20 minutes by boat from My Tho.

Water, rain and the right month

The national tourism site gives the dry season in Can Tho as December to April, the best months for boat trips and floating markets, and the wet season as May to November, with a dependable afternoon downpour that usually lasts a few hours; it describes September to November as the flooding season, when boat tours to Cai Rang still run. Fruit ripens in the orchards from June to August. The dawn market suits the wet season well, because the rain usually comes in the afternoon.

The UK Foreign Office says the tropical storm season normally runs from May to November and that tropical storms can cause serious travel disruption. The rainy season runs from June to September in the north and south and from October to December in central Vietnam; heavy rain causes floods and landslides that can block roads and rail lines. France says the monsoon flood risks last until November in the Mekong delta, the UK Foreign Office says seasonal flooding is common in the Mekong River Delta regions, and the German Foreign Office says those regions are regularly affected. Check the warnings of the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting before you travel and be ready to change your plans.

Tet falls on a different date each year because it follows the lunar calendar; the Ministry of Home Affairs announces the official holiday, and for 2027 it announced a public-sector holiday from 4 to 10 February. The national tourism site says many businesses tend to be closed during Tet. Con Phung stays open on holidays and Tet, but its Monday-to-Thursday homestay offer excludes them; no official page gives Cai Rang's trading at Tet. Our best-time guide covers the seasons across the country.

One or two nights in Can Tho, day by day, and what it costs

Day 1. Take a morning coach from Ho Chi Minh City (2 h 30 min to 3 h 10 min), check in, and spend the afternoon at Binh Thuy Ancient House (by taxi or app) and Ong Pagoda. Walk the Ninh Kieu waterfront and the pedestrian bridge at dusk, eat on De Tham Street, and confirm the Cai Rang tour before you sleep.

Day 2. Mekong Smile collects you at your hotel at 06:00; the tour has breakfast on the water and returns before noon. In the afternoon cross to Con Son or rest, and end at the night market. With one night only, take the coach back to Ho Chi Minh City after the tour.

Day 3. Visit the Can Tho Museum or take a last wander along the river, then catch a daytime coach back to Ho Chi Minh City or fly from VCA. To add the coconut country, make Con Phung a first night on the way down from Ho Chi Minh City, as the section on Ben Tre explains.

The budget below covers the two nights, the coach legs, the Cai Rang tour and the optional Con Phung night for two adults sharing a room, at the operators' own prices, checked on 17 and 18 October 2026.

Practical questions

Can I see the Mekong Delta in a day trip from Ho Chi Minh City?

Yes. Ben Tre is about a two-hour drive from Ho Chi Minh City, with a day of boat rides, a coconut-candy workshop, cycling and lunch, and Saigon Adventure's shared day tour to My Tho and Ben Tre starts at USD 17 a person (checked on 18 October 2026). An ordinary day trip does not reach the Cai Rang floating market, which is busiest from about 04:00 to 09:00 and 2 h 30 min to 3 h 10 min from the city by Thanh Buoi's coach; for that, sleep in Can Tho.

What time should I be at the Cai Rang floating market?

The market is busiest from about 04:00 to 09:00, and by 08:00 the heat rises and the vendors pack up. Mekong Smile collects guests from hotels in central Can Tho at 06:00 for its 5 to 6-hour Cai Rang tour at VND 1,390,000 per adult for a group of two or more, with breakfast on the boat included (checked on 18 October 2026). The boat from Ninh Kieu Wharf takes about 30 minutes to the market.

How do I get from Ho Chi Minh City to Can Tho?

By coach: Thanh Buoi's route page lists a 34-berth coach every 30 minutes around the clock at VND 210,000, and its home page lists the trip at 165 km and 2 h 30 min to 3 h 10 min, so a morning departure suits the delta. Can Tho International Airport (VCA) has flights from Hanoi and Da Nang, and Vietnam Airlines also lists flights from Can Tho to Phu Quoc and Con Dao.

How much does Con Phung cost?

The tourist area's own site lists an adult ticket at VND 50,000 and a child ticket at VND 30,000, with the return boat included, checked on 17 October 2026. It is open from 07:30 to 18:00 every day, including holidays and Tet.

When is the best month for the delta?

December to April is the dry season, best for boat trips and floating markets, and May to November is the wet season, with an afternoon downpour that usually lasts a few hours. September to November is the flooding season, and fruit ripens in the orchards from June to August.

Which province are Ben Tre, Can Tho and My Tho in now?

Under the National Assembly's Resolution 202/2025/QH15 of 12 June 2025, Ben Tre is part of Vinh Long province, Can Tho is a city at provincial level that absorbed Soc Trang and Hau Giang, and My Tho belongs to Dong Thap province.
