Your first Thailand trip: choose the regions, then the route

The tempting first Thailand route contains everything: Bangkok temples, northern food, a mountain sunrise and several islands. The holiday usually improves when you remove one of those moves. Start with the experience you want most, give it a proper base and use Bangkok as more than an airport connection. The result is a trip with evenings in the same neighbourhood, meals you can return for and enough slack to change a boat day when the sea does not cooperate.

Season and timing

The short answer

For seven days, choose Bangkok and either the north or one coast. With ten days, three bases can work if you accept that the moves take space; with about two weeks, Bangkok, Chiang Mai and one beach region is a more comfortable shape. Pick Andaman or Gulf using the month, not both just to tick off islands. Check the September 2026 entry rules and the TDAC before paying for inflexible connections, then book the long moves and rooms around them. Keep arrival day light and spend the final night where you can reach the departure airport without depending on a sea crossing.

Decide what you most want to bring home

Choose one priority: a city-and-food trip, time in the north or an island holiday with a little Bangkok at the start. That decision does more useful work than a list of famous sights. If the northern markets and cooking are the reason for going, give Chiang Mai nights. If the sea is the reason, do not spend most of the beach stay moving between islands.

Seven days is a good reason to choose two bases. Ten days can accommodate a third, but each long transfer reduces time on the ground. Two weeks gives Bangkok, the north and one coast room to become three stays rather than three check-in photographs. These are editorial planning shapes, not fixed packages or official journey times.

For the first Bangkok days, group an area rather than chase the whole city. TAT’s September 2026 update names Chinatown, Talat Noi, Song Wat, the riverside temples and Siam among the city’s major visitor areas. Pick the combination that interests you and leave time between stops for a meal and a break.

Make the weather choice before the beach booking

Andaman or Gulf is the useful first distinction. TAT’s broad monsoon guidance places the Andaman southwest monsoon in May to October, with September taking the strongest rain. Its Samui-area guidance places heavier rain later, in October to December, peaking in November and easing in January. The article is dated 2018: use the pattern to choose, then the current forecast to decide what actually runs.

In the north, TAT’s January 2026 column describes Chiang Mai’s cooler season from November to February and the need for layers on mountain mornings. A northern stay can mix town days with an outing in the hills. Do not make a specific bloom or a mountain sunrise the only reason that every hotel night must stay fixed.

If you choose Phuket or Ao Nang, a base accessible by road leaves boat outings movable. If you choose a smaller island, accept that getting there and leaving are part of the holiday. Parks can close fully or partly for weather and ecological recovery; TAT’s January 2026 notice directs visitors to the current park information. No unread closure calendar is assumed here.

A route with room for ordinary days

For a Bangkok-and-north week, start with a few city days, then give Chiang Mai the rest of the stay. Compare a flight with a deliberate rail journey using the current service, not a guessed duration. A flight can simplify a short route; a sleeper can be part of the experience if it is what you actually want.

For a Bangkok-and-beach week, choose one coast and one main bed there. One weather-dependent island outing is often more satisfying than changing ferries and hotels every day. If the beach stay is remote from your departure airport, return to a suitable departure base before the final day.

With about two weeks, the three-region shape is easier: Bangkok, the north and one coast, with the long moves treated as travel days. Our separate national itineraries turn those choices into daily plans. This guide is the decision before the timetable: choose the regions, then check the real connections.

Choose accommodation for the stay, not just the transfer

In Bangkok, a hotel near the urban railway can suit days in several districts; a riverside base can suit a slower temple-and-neighbourhood stay. Ask about the actual walk or transfer to the hotel with bags. A station label on the listing does not establish that the entire arrival is convenient for you.

In Chiang Mai, a base in or near the Old City keeps the town part of the stay together. In an Andaman beach town, decide whether you want a beach edge or a town with more land alternatives. On Samui, confirm the pier and pickup area for any onward boat. The best base is the one that supports the days you want, rather than the one nearest a single photograph.

Keep the first evening simple. Find dinner near the accommodation, sleep and begin properly the next morning. If you arrive after an overnight flight, a prepaid all-day outing immediately afterwards has little room for delay or fatigue.

Book the fragile pieces first

First settle entry. TAT’s update read on 2026-10-07 says the old 60-day exemption ended on 15 September 2026 and a 30-day category covers 60 countries and territories, with other categories and bilateral arrangements applying separately. Check your passport with the current Thai authority. Most foreign passport holders also need the TDAC; TAT’s guidance gives submission up to three days before scheduled arrival, with stated transit and Border Pass exceptions.

Next book the important long move and the hotel nights around it. Bangkok has BKK and DMK, different airports; the main long-distance rail hub and the exceptions also need checking. A combined island ticket can have a road transfer, a pier and a boat. Write those pieces down before assuming that two booking confirmations connect.

Only then add the guided day. An Ayutthaya trip from Bangkok, a Chiang Mai cooking class or an Andaman boat outing can be a highlight, but check the pickup area and what is included. Give a weather-dependent activity another possible day, and read the cancellation terms.

Eat locally, and let one day stay unfilled

TAT’s street-food article describes northern khao soi, Bangkok’s Thai crab omelette and northeastern sai krok Isan. Use a meal as part of the place: a northern noodle lunch, a relaxed city dinner, a snack from an Isan-style stall. There is no need to cross an entire city for every famous dish.

Ask about ingredients rather than assuming a vegetable-looking plate meets your dietary needs. TAT’s food article describes meat and egg noodles in common khao soi versions, egg and crab in the omelette and pork in the sausage. Confirm dietary requirements with a food-tour or cooking-class operator before booking.

Finally, keep one day or part of a day unfilled. It can absorb weather, a slower arrival or simply a neighbourhood you like more than expected. A first Thailand trip is a starting point for another visit; it does not have to contain every coast, temple and mountain at once.

Practical questions

Is a week enough for Thailand?

Yes, if you choose Bangkok and one region rather than trying to see the whole country. Our editorial suggestion is the north or one coast, with the long move given space.

Should I visit both Phuket and Samui on a first trip?

Usually not on a short route. They are on different coasts with different rain patterns, and adding both creates another transfer. Choose the coast for your dates and give it real time.

What is a good first two-week route?

Bangkok, Chiang Mai and one coast is a useful editorial shape. Treat long transfers as travel days and keep a departure buffer rather than filling every day with a booked activity.

What should I book first?

Settle entry permission, then the important long moves and hotel nights around them. Add guided days after those are clear, checking pickup areas, inclusions and weather terms.

Do I still get 60 days visa-free?

TAT’s September 2026 announcement says the previous 60-day measure ended on 15 September. A 30-day category covers 60 countries and territories, with separate 15-day and bilateral arrangements. Check the current rule for your own passport.

Should I stay on an island until the morning of my flight?

Our editorial advice is to avoid relying on a sea crossing that day. Spend the final night somewhere that allows a ground transfer to the actual departure airport and check that route.
