Krabi and Koh Lanta in 7 days: a gentler Andaman week
An Andaman week does not need a different island every night. Begin on the mainland at Ao Nang, where a change in the boat plan still leaves a beach and a room you can reach by road. Then move to Koh Lanta for a slower finish, with a single full day to choose between the coast and Old Town. Railay is an outing, not another hotel move, and an island-hopping day is optional. You get limestone scenery and a quieter island stay without spending the week unpacking on different piers.

- Suggested time
- 7 days (6 nights)
- Where to stay
- Ao Nang, Krabi mainland (4 nights); Koh Lanta west coast (2 nights)
- Season and timing
- Choose the week using local sea conditions and current boat or park operating notices, not a promise of daily island trips. In wet or windy weather, keep the Ao Nang days on land and the Lanta day close to the hotel. Seasonal excursion availability and transfer routes must be confirmed for your dates.
The short answer
Spend four nights in Ao Nang and two on Koh Lanta's west coast. Arrive through Krabi Airport, keep day two on the mainland, visit Railay on day three only if boats and conditions are suitable, and use day four for one optional island tour or a free shore day. Give day five to a booked vehicle transfer to Lanta, with the car-ferry portion and hotel drop-off confirmed before paying. Day six is a beach day with an optional Old Town visit by locally arranged transport. On day seven, return towards the mainland airport with a realistic buffer; before an early flight, change the last night to the mainland or add a night.
Two rooms, with the mainland first
Ao Nang is the practical first base because the airport-to-hotel journey can be arranged on land. Use it for four nights, with Railay and any island tour as outings from the same room. A weather cancellation then changes a day, not the entire accommodation plan.
On Koh Lanta, choose a west-coast beach for the final two nights if swimming, sunset dinners and less movement are what you want. Check the actual property location, swimming conditions and transport options: 'Koh Lanta' is not one compact hotel district. Lanta Old Town is an alternative if waterside houses and a village setting matter more than a beach outside the room.
This itinerary leaves Phuket and Phi Phi out of the hotel sequence. Their guides are useful for a longer trip, but adding either here would cost another transfer and much of a full day. Keep those as replacements or extensions, not bonus stops squeezed into the same seven days.
Days 1–2: arrive in Krabi and settle into Ao Nang
Day one is the airport transfer, check-in and a walk near the hotel. Confirm the collection details using the airport and terminal on your flight booking. Do not pay for a boat departure that depends on an on-time flight, immigration and baggage all lining up.
On day two, stay on the Ao Nang shore. Use the morning for a beach walk and a swim only where conditions are suitable, then lunch and time indoors through the heat. A mainland start helps you adjust to the weather and decide whether a boat outing is appealing at all.
If you would rather see town life than another beach, replace part of the day with Krabi Town, arranging the return journey before you leave. Food and local communities can be as worthwhile as a famous island view: TAT's Krabi feature describes visits built around fishing communities and local seafood. Do not assume that a community programme is a walk-in attraction; arrange it with the host if you choose one.

Make time for the local food
What to eat and where to look
Grilled fish and seafood
A simple coastal meal of grilled fish, squid or prawns, with local sauces and rice; TAT’s Krabi community coverage includes local seafood experiences.
- Where to look
- Busy seafood restaurants around Ao Nang or your Lanta beach, checking what is available that day.
- Fit it into your day
- One unhurried shore dinner, after the boat day rather than before departure.
Confirm the weight, total price and preparation before ordering; disclose shellfish allergies.
Southern rice and curry
Rice with a choice of prepared curries or stir-fries, a useful lunch when you do not want another long sit-down meal.
- Where to look
- Local rice-and-curry shops in Krabi Town and island communities, with food being served actively.
- Fit it into your day
- Lunch on the mainland day or after reaching Lanta.
Southern curries can be hot, and pastes may contain shrimp or fish even without visible seafood.
Roti
Griddled flatbread served in sweet or savoury versions, a familiar choice in southern Thai Muslim cooking.
- Where to look
- Roti stalls and small shops; ask what fillings and accompaniments are available.
- Fit it into your day
- A snack on the Lanta day or a simple breakfast before a locally arranged outing.
Contains wheat and may contain egg or dairy; ask about the version being prepared.
Days 3–4: Railay and one optional island day
Keep day three for Railay, subject to local boat operation and sea conditions. TAT’s Krabi feature places Railay among the province’s limestone coastal attractions. Ask where the boat lands, how you will board, and how the return is organised; sand, waves and wet steps can make a nominally simple outing awkward with heavy bags or limited mobility.
Go with a small day bag, keep your main luggage at the hotel and make the return plan before heading off to lunch. This is a beach outing, not a reason to fit every cave, viewpoint and activity into one afternoon. If boats are not suitable, stay on the mainland and use the spare day rather than seeking a rough-weather alternative.
Day four can be a four-islands tour from Ao Nang, with the operator's actual route and park-access conditions checked beforehand, or another quiet mainland day. One boat excursion is enough for this week. Do not add Phi Phi as a second fixed sea day: it makes the itinerary less forgiving if weather changes the order.
Day 5: move to Lanta, without a sunset deadline
Reserve a vehicle transfer to Koh Lanta that explains the pickup, ferry section where required, luggage handling and final hotel drop-off. TAT's coastal road-route feature includes Krabi and Lanta and discusses combining driving with car ferries, but it is not a current transfer timetable. We have not verified a dated public route or fare, so none is quoted.
Ask the transfer company how it handles ferry disruption or a missed connection. A seasonal passenger boat may also be offered for your dates, but do not build the week around an unverified direct sailing. Choose the booked option that gets you and the luggage to the actual property, not simply to an island pier.
Leave the afternoon free. A delayed arrival should mean a later dinner, not losing a prepaid activity. Settle into the room, find out about local transport and decide whether the following day is all beach or includes Old Town.

Day 6: a beach, Old Town, or a sea-day replacement
Take the morning slowly on the west coast. Check the beach in front of your hotel rather than treating every bay as interchangeable, and follow local swimming advice. A long breakfast and an unplanned swim are a perfectly good reason to have travelled to Lanta.
For a change of scene, arrange transport to Lanta Old Town and give the waterfront streets time. The Tourism Directory lists the Koh Lanta Community Museum in Ko Lanta Yai and describes rooms devoted to Chinese, sea-folk and Malay or Muslim cultures. Check museum access separately; the village visit does not depend on the museum being open.
If snorkelling is the priority, a dated Koh Rok excursion can replace the shore-and-Old-Town day, subject to park operation and sea conditions. It cannot be added on top. Check the operator's weather policy, swimming requirements, pickup and park fees. Leave the final evening for packing and confirming the next morning's transfer.
The week at a glance
The split is an editorial suggestion, not a timetable. Keep the Railay and island days flexible, and replace either with a land day when conditions warrant it.
- Day 1 — Krabi arrival: booked airport transfer to Ao Nang, nearby dinner. Night: Ao Nang.
- Day 2 — Mainland pace: shore morning, lunch and rest; Krabi Town as an alternative. Night: Ao Nang.
- Day 3 — Railay if conditions suit: local boat outing with return agreed, otherwise stay on land. Night: Ao Nang.
- Day 4 — One optional sea day: four islands with a verified operator plan, or free mainland day. Night: Ao Nang.
- Day 5 — Lanta transfer: booked vehicle journey, hotel arrival, no timed activity. Night: Koh Lanta.
- Day 6 — Lanta: west-coast beach and optional Old Town; a suitable Koh Rok trip replaces these. Night: Koh Lanta.
- Day 7 — Mainland departure: protected transfer to Krabi Airport, or adjust the previous night for an early flight.

Protect the flight, not the last beach morning
The airport is Krabi (KBV). Confirm the return from Lanta as part of the transfer booking, with its ferry and road portions and your flight check-in requirements. No crossing or driving duration is promised here.
Before an early departure, spend the final night on the mainland or add an extra night. That changes the suggested six-night split, and the cost is worthwhile if it avoids making a ferry your only margin before an international connection. Keep the flight day for leaving; it is not a final island tour day.
Practical questions
Can I fit Phuket, Phi Phi and Lanta into the week?
You can choose a different route, but adding them to this one means sacrificing full days to transfers. This plan keeps Ao Nang and Lanta as the only hotel bases; other islands are replacements or extensions.
Should I sleep on Railay?
Not for this version. Ao Nang keeps the first hotel and airport transfer on the mainland, with Railay as a suitable-weather outing. A Railay stay needs a different luggage and boat-connection plan.
Is the Krabi–Lanta transfer by boat or road?
Confirm the dated service you book. A vehicle transfer should explain any ferry portion and hotel drop-off; seasonal passenger boats should not be assumed to run. No current timetable has been verified here.
What if the island tour is cancelled?
Stay on the mainland and use the spare day. Keeping one Ao Nang room for four nights means a cancelled excursion does not leave you needing a new hotel or a rough-weather boat transfer.
Can I leave Lanta for an early Krabi flight?
Do not assume that a same-day connection will work. Confirm the full transfer and move the last night to the mainland or add a night if the flight is early.

Does this experience fit your route?
Choose one sea day rather than booking every island. Confirm the pickup, park access, swimming demands and weather-cancellation terms before paying.
