Koh Samui and Koh Phangan in 7 days: two islands, less packing
The Gulf islands are close on a map, but a holiday measured in ferry tickets soon becomes a holiday measured in luggage handling. For one week, choose Samui and Phangan and give each three nights. Samui supplies the first beach base and an optional day offshore; Phangan gets a few days to become more than a stop between boats. Koh Tao stays an extension for another trip or extra nights. With just one inter-island move, a rainy afternoon can remain a rainy afternoon rather than a missed chain of connections.

- Suggested time
- 7 days (6 nights)
- Where to stay
- Koh Samui, Bophut or Mae Nam area (3 nights); Koh Phangan, one chosen beach base (3 nights)
- Season and timing
- Choose using the actual local forecast, sea conditions and operator notices. An island stay and an offshore park outing do not have identical weather limits. This route keeps the beach days flexible, and no ferry frequency, park opening date or party calendar is assumed.
The short answer
Book three nights on Koh Samui, preferably at Bophut, Mae Nam or another coast that fits your budget and beach preferences, then three nights on Koh Phangan. Keep day one for arrival and days two and three for a beach, a small island outing or one suitable-weather Ang Thong trip. Use day four entirely for the dated ferry, pier-to-hotel transfer and settling in. Days five and six belong to one Phangan beach base, with a locally arranged outing if you want it. Leave on day seven with the ferry and flight planned as a whole: an early Samui or mainland flight may need the last night moved closer to the airport.
Samui first, Phangan second
Start on Koh Samui if the flight itinerary and airport transfer work for you. TAT describes a range of beach areas: busy Chaweng and Lamai, and quieter Bophut, Mae Nam and Choeng Mon. Choose the character of the coast, not simply the cheapest room somewhere on the island.
On Koh Phangan, use one beach base for all three nights. A room near your arrival area reduces transfer effort; a quieter bay can be worth a longer hotel journey if it is where you want to spend both full days. Ask about the actual arrival pier and property pickup before booking, especially with large bags.
The plan does not require a party, a diving course or a third island. Koh Tao is a different extension and deserves extra nights if diving is the reason to travel. Seeing a ferry route that joins all three islands is not a reason to book hotels on all three within the same week.
Days 1–3: Samui, one coast and one choice of outing
Day one is arrival. Transfer to the booked property, see the beach conditions and eat nearby. A late arrival should not mean losing an expensive activity, so leave the first day without a fixed excursion.
Use day two for your chosen Samui coast. A beach morning, lunch and a rest make a better start than a circuit of every viewpoint. For a short change of scene, arrange transport to Wat Phra Yai, the Big Buddha temple identified in TAT's island feature, and follow the temple's own dress and access rules. Current opening hours are not quoted here.
Day three is your choice: another shore day, a locally arranged island visit, or a suitable Ang Thong National Marine Park excursion. TAT describes day trips from Samui combining selected islands with activities such as kayaking, snorkelling and viewpoints. Check what your actual boat does and how strenuous the walking is, rather than assuming every tour includes every activity.
The park option is conditional. Confirm current access, fees, pickup and weather-cancellation terms with the operator. TAT's Samui feature is from 2021 and its seasonal advice is not a live park-opening notice. If the sea day is cancelled, stay on Samui and enjoy the room you have already booked.

Make time for the local food
What to eat and where to look
Grilled seafood with rice
Fish, squid or prawns cooked simply, with rice and Thai dipping sauces, a familiar meal around the island coasts.
- Where to look
- Busy beach-area restaurants or local seafood places near your chosen base.
- Fit it into your day
- Dinner after a shore day, with time to ask what is fresh and how it is priced.
Confirm the weight and total price first; sauces may contain fish or shellfish.
Rice and curry
A practical plate of rice with curries or stir-fries, allowing a smaller meal between swimming and a hotel rest.
- Where to look
- Local food counters around Samui communities and Thong Sala, choosing food in active service.
- Fit it into your day
- Lunch on arrival or on the Phangan outing day.
Curry pastes and vegetable dishes can contain fish sauce, shrimp paste or meat stock; ask if avoiding them.
Fresh fruit
Tropical fruit served sliced or in a shake, an easy change from another large cooked meal.
- Where to look
- Fruit sellers, small shops and cafés near the hotel or town food area.
- Fit it into your day
- A snack between lunch and dinner, leaving proper meals for the travel day.
Choose freshly prepared fruit; ask about water, ice and added sugar in drinks.
Day 4: the ferry is the day’s main event
TAT's Gulf-ferry feature describes Samui–Phangan–Tao inter-island links, as well as Don Sak access to Samui and Chumphon access to Tao. It is a 2020 promotion, so we use it for the network context only: the fares, discounts and dated offers are not current travel information.
Book the Samui–Phangan service for your date and confirm the two piers, luggage terms, check-in requirement and any hotel pickup. A pier name is as important as an island name. Ask whether the ticket includes the land journey at either end or only the boat crossing.
Keep all of day four flexible. A later sailing or a slower hotel transfer should mean a later lunch, not a missed tour. On arrival, check how you will leave again, then spend the rest of the day near the property. No current sailing time, frequency or crossing duration was verified for this article.

Days 5–6: stay long enough to enjoy Phangan
Give day five to your beach base. Find out which stretch is suitable for swimming that day, where you can eat without a long drive and how transport works if you need it. A quiet morning and a second visit to the same lunch place can be more satisfying than another move.
On day six, choose a single locally arranged outing or remain by the sea. If you head to Thong Sala for food and supplies, organise the return trip and do not assume an evening transport service will be waiting where you finish. Our Phangan guide has the broader island context; this short route does not require a tour of every bay.
If an event at Haad Rin is central to your trip, check its date and accommodation location separately, then plan the transfers around it. This article does not publish an unverified Full Moon calendar. Travellers who want quiet should also ask their accommodation about event noise and transport pressure instead of discovering the situation on arrival.
A scooter is not necessary for this week. Arrange a car or other suitable local transport if you are not already an experienced, properly licensed and insured rider. The fact that a beach looks nearby on a map does not make an unfamiliar road a sensible first riding lesson.
The week at a glance
This is an editorial plan, not a ferry schedule. Choose the shore and offshore days after checking conditions, and keep the single island-transfer day clear.
- Day 1 — Samui arrival: airport or confirmed ferry connection, hotel, local dinner. Night: Samui.
- Day 2 — Your Samui coast: beach morning, lunch and rest; optional short temple outing. Night: Samui.
- Day 3 — One activity: Ang Thong only if operations and conditions suit, or a shore day. Night: Samui.
- Day 4 — Phangan transfer: dated ferry, hotel journey and settling in; no fixed activity. Night: Phangan.
- Day 5 — Phangan beach: stay around the chosen bay and enjoy the slower pace. Night: Phangan.
- Day 6 — One local outing or none: beach, locally arranged visit or Thong Sala food stop; confirm departure. Night: Phangan.
- Day 7 — Leave carefully: ferry plus booked onward transport, adjusting the previous night if the flight is early.

A ferry is not a flight connection guarantee
The simplest flight gateway for this version is Samui Airport (USM), if an actual itinerary suits you. TAT also describes mainland access through Surat Thani and Don Sak, but a flight to Surat Thani (URT) still needs the road-and-boat portion arranged. It does not deliver you directly to an island hotel.
For departure, confirm the Phangan ferry, onward pier transfer and flight as one plan. Buy with an understanding of what happens if weather changes the sailing. Separate bookings may leave you responsible for a missed flight; a promotional ferry map cannot settle that risk.
Move the last night to Samui or the appropriate mainland airport area before an early flight, or add a night. That is a deliberate adjustment to the three-and-three split. Keep day seven for leaving, rather than trying to earn one last boat excursion before check-in.
Practical questions
Can I add Koh Tao to the same week?
It is better to add nights or choose Tao instead of one base. This route gives Samui and Phangan three nights each and one inter-island move. Adding a third hotel means another transfer and fewer full island days.
Do I need to attend a Full Moon Party?
No. This is a beach-based route. If a Haad Rin event is important, verify its actual date and choose the hotel and transport accordingly; the itinerary does not provide a current party calendar.
Are the ferry times fixed throughout the year?
Do not assume so. Book the service for your date and check piers, operating notices and weather policy. The TAT ferry source establishes network context, not a current timetable.
Is Ang Thong included in the island move?
No. It is an optional separate Samui day trip, subject to park access and suitable conditions. The move to Phangan gets its own day.
Can I connect from Phangan to a flight on departure day?
Only with an actual plan and enough margin for the ferry and land transfers. For an early flight, move the last night closer to the departure airport or add a night; do not assume the first sailing will protect the flight.
