Trains in Thailand: Bangkok stations, sleepers and route choices
A Thai train journey is worth choosing for the journey itself, not just because a line on the map looks shorter than a flight. An overnight berth can turn a long move into part of the holiday; a local ride can give a day out a different pace. The practical catch is Bangkok’s station split. The historic Hua Lamphong building is still part of the railway story, but many long-distance trains moved to Krung Thep Aphiwat. Start with the actual train and station on your booking, then build the hotel nights around it.

- Suggested time
- A day for a local railway outing; give an overnight journey its own departure and arrival days
- Where to stay
- Bangkok near the station you actually use; Chiang Mai or an Isan town for a longer stay; Kanchanaburi for a local rail outing
- Season and timing
- All year, subject to current services, holidays and weather disruptions
The short answer
Use one substantial rail leg on a short Thailand trip, rather than trying to make every transfer a train journey. Compare the current SRT departure, arrival station and available carriage before you book. TAT’s 2023 relocation notice puts the principal northern, northeastern and southern long-distance services at Krung Thep Aphiwat, while ordinary, suburban and special tourism services were exceptions. Book through the official D-Ticket channel or an SRT station, give the arrival day room to breathe and avoid a tight connection to an international flight. For a railway outing in Kanchanaburi, stay in the town and check the local train section separately.
Bangkok has a station split, not one universal departure point
When we checked on 2026-10-07, TAT’s published relocation notice said 52 long-distance, rapid and express services moved from Hua Lamphong to Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal on 19 January 2023. It covered northern, northeastern and southern routes. The station is in the Chatuchak area; use its full name when arranging the hotel transfer.
The same notice explicitly kept ordinary, suburban and special tourism trains at Hua Lamphong. It is therefore misleading to tell every traveller either “all trains leave Hua Lamphong” or “Hua Lamphong has closed”. Read the station on the service you select. We have not rechecked every individual train’s station assignment or platform for this guide.
For arrival day, choose the hotel for the following stay. For departure day, allow time to reach the correct station with luggage and find the train. Do not use an old photograph of a station sign as the booking information. A station change across Bangkok is a road or urban-transit journey of its own.
Choose a rail leg that earns its place in the holiday
TAT’s carriage announcement identified Bangkok–Chiang Mai, Bangkok–Ubon Ratchathani, Bangkok–Nong Khai and Bangkok–Hat Yai as overnight routes receiving new stock in 2016. Those are useful corridors to investigate, not a current timetable: check the service and carriage offered on your dates. The north, Isan and the south each need actual nights at the far end to justify a long move.
For a first route, Bangkok to the north is an obvious rail-versus-flight comparison if Chiang Mai is already in the plan. For an Isan trip, compare the railway with the town you want to sleep in rather than treating the northeast as one destination. For a southern beach holiday, the train is only one part of the journey if a road transfer or boat follows.
An overnight journey does not create a fresh sightseeing day automatically. You still need to reach the hotel, leave bags and rest. A shorter trip may be better with a flight between regions and one local rail outing. The sensible choice is the one that leaves enough time at the destination, not the one with the most transport modes.

Make time for the local food
What to eat and where to look

Sai krok Isan
Fermented northeastern pork sausage, commonly made with sticky rice and garlic and served with ginger, chilli and cabbage, as described by TAT.
- Where to look
- Isan food stalls in the town where you stay; buy cooked portions for an immediate meal.
- Fit it into your day
- An arrival snack after a rail journey into the northeast.
Contains pork; choose thoroughly cooked food and ask about ingredients.
Khao soi
Northern egg noodles in a coconut-curry broth with a crisp fried-noodle topping, commonly with chicken or beef.
- Where to look
- Specialist noodle shops in Chiang Mai rather than relying on an unverified train menu.
- Fit it into your day
- A sit-down lunch after reaching the hotel in the north.
Contains egg noodles and usually meat; ask about the broth if you avoid animal ingredients.
Thai crab omelette
A crab-and-egg omelette with crisp edges, a Thai street-food dish described in TAT’s article.
- Where to look
- Bangkok kitchens that explicitly list the dish.
- Fit it into your day
- A meal before the station transfer if you have time, rather than something to carry onto the train.
Contains egg and shellfish; confirm the price before ordering.
Sleepers: book the carriage you want, not just the route
TAT’s 2016 description distinguished first-class private sleeper rooms from second-class sleeper carriages and mentioned charging facilities. That is evidence about the stock introduced then, not a promise that every current train has the same layout. On the booking screen, check the exact class, sleeping accommodation and places available. If travelling together, choose the berths you can actually reserve.
For the packing list, keep documents, valuables, medicine and a warm layer in a small bag you can reach without opening the whole suitcase. Charge devices before departure rather than making a working socket essential to the trip. Bring a simple meal if food matters to your evening; we have not verified a dining car or onboard menu on a current service.
If you need wheelchair access or assistance, ask SRT about the specific train, platform and boarding arrangements. The historical carriage announcement mentioned better facilities, but that does not establish a step-free journey from the street to your berth. Our accessibility guide treats the whole chain of travel separately.
Use official booking, and read the individual service conditions
TAT’s July 2024 Bangkok–Vientiane announcement identifies the D-Ticket app, www.dticket.railway.co.th and SRT station ticket booths as booking channels. It gives a 180-day booking window for that announced service. We have not applied that number to every domestic train: the current booking system is the place to check when your train opens for sale.
Check the date, origin, destination, class and passenger details before paying. Then read the current change and refund terms rather than assuming a train ticket behaves like a hotel reservation. This guide does not quote a fare, a refund charge or a universal booking window because those have not been checked against a current operator page.
Keep the ticket available offline and the station name in a form you can show a driver. If an agent makes the booking, confirm what is the actual railway ticket and what is an agency confirmation. Leave the transfer to the station separate from any tour booked on the same day.

Local rail days and the border: check the extra pieces
Kanchanaburi works best as its own stay if a railway outing is central to the trip. A guided Erawan-and-railway day from the town is one option; ask which section is ridden, where pickup starts and what happens if the train changes. The product in this guide starts in Kanchanaburi, not at a Bangkok hotel. No local departure time or fare has been verified here.
For an international rail route, TAT’s July 2024 announcement describes Bangkok–Vientiane’s Khamsavath Station as an extension of the Bangkok–Nong Khai connection, with sleeper, seated air-conditioned and fan-carriage options in the announced train. Use the correct Vientiane station name when planning onward travel; this is not a claim that all rail systems in Laos share one terminal.
Cross-border tickets do not settle entry permission. Check Thailand’s current rules for each arrival, the neighbour’s requirements and the current train. TAT’s 2025 TDAC guidance covers foreign passport holders arriving by land as well as by air and sea, subject to its stated exceptions. Do not reuse the temporary paper-arrival-card waiver mentioned in the 2024 rail announcement.
Weather, connections and the day after the train
TAT’s September 2026 visitor update shows why a railway plan needs a second check near departure: heavy rain affected services before later updates reported improvements. The notice lists SRT’s 1690 call centre and the train-status site ttsview.railway.co.th. Use those for the actual journey; a September situation report is not today’s timetable.
Give a long arrival a gentle landing: breakfast, the hotel and a neighbourhood walk rather than a prepaid outing that cannot move. For an international flight, our editorial advice is to arrive in the departure city the previous day. A buffer is especially useful when several independently booked legs depend on one train.
Train travel is most satisfying when it has room around it. Choose a berth or window seat you want, let the landscape be part of the day, and give the town at the other end more than a few hours before the next departure.
Practical questions
Do Thailand’s long-distance trains leave Hua Lamphong?
Many moved to Krung Thep Aphiwat in January 2023. TAT’s notice retained ordinary, suburban and special tourism trains at Hua Lamphong, so check the exact departure station on the service you book.
Where should I book a Thai train?
TAT identifies SRT’s D-Ticket app, www.dticket.railway.co.th and station ticket booths. Check the current service, class, booking window and change rules there.
Does every overnight train have a private sleeper room?
No such promise is made here. TAT’s historical stock announcement described first-class rooms and second-class sleepers, but you must check the carriage offered on your specific train.
Can I ride the railway in Kanchanaburi on a guided day?
The concrete tour linked here combines Erawan and a railway section from Kanchanaburi town. Confirm the section, pickup and current operation; it is not a Bangkok departure.
How far ahead can I book?
TAT’s 2024 Bangkok–Vientiane announcement stated 180 days for that service. We have not generalised it to all trains: check the current opening date for your service in D-Ticket.
Should I connect from an overnight train straight to a flight home?
Our editorial advice is to reach the departure city the previous day. A train, city transfer and international check-in are separate pieces, and weather or service changes can affect the first one.
