Yeosu travel guide: cable car, Hyangiram, Odongdo and the night sea
Yeosu sits at the tip of a peninsula on Korea's south coast, and VisitKorea counts 365 islands in its waters. For Koreans the city's night sea is shorthand for romance, and the town is built for it: a cable car strung over the harbour, bridges lit after dark, food trucks under one of them and a fountain show on the old Expo waterfront. By day the draw is the coast itself — the camellia woods of Odongdo, the rock-set hermitage of Hyangiram on Dolsando, and islands an hour or so away by ferry. It also eats unusually well: marinated crab, tongue-sole salad, eel soup and the leaf mustard kimchi grown on Dolsan.

- Suggested time
- 2–3 days
- Where to stay
- Yeosu EXPO Station area or the old harbour (Jungang-dong) for walkable evenings; Yeocheon only if you are flying
- Season and timing
- Odongdo's camellias flower from January and peak in March. The 2026 World Island Exhibition runs from 5 September to 4 November 2026, and the Big-O fountain show is a May-to-November event. Hyangiram holds a sunrise festival at New Year.
The short answer
Give Yeosu two nights. Arrive by KTX at Yeosu EXPO Station, walk the breakwater to Odongdo in the afternoon and ride the maritime cable car at dusk, then eat at the Romantic Cart Bars under Geobukseon Bridge. Use the second morning for Hyangiram Hermitage on Dolsando — a taxi or car saves time — and the afternoon for Goso-dong, the fish markets and a crab set meal. Sleep near Yeosu EXPO Station or around the old harbour, where most sights are walkable. Add a third night for Geumodo's cliff trail or, until 4 November 2026, the World Island Exhibition.
Where to base yourself: the station, the harbour or the island
The sights you will want in the evening — the cable car, the Romantic Cart Bars, the lit bridges and Expo Ocean Park — are bunched together around Yeosu EXPO Station and the old harbour. VisitKorea's own Yeosu guide says this area, together with Odongdo, the cable car and the Goso-dong Mural Village, is easy to explore on foot or by public transport. Sleeping here means you can stay out for the night views without worrying about the ride home.
The Expo side suits KTX arrivals: the station is the end of the line, and Odongdo's breakwater, Jasan Park's cable car station and Expo Ocean Park are close by. The old harbour around Jungang-dong is the livelier choice for dinner, with the cart bars, Goso-dong's hillside lanes and Jinnamgwan within reach. Dolsando, across Dolsan Bridge, is quieter and closer to Hyangiram and the exhibition's main venue, but you will rely on taxis or a car. Yeocheon, nearer the airport, makes sense mainly for an early flight from Yeosu Airport.
Odongdo, the cable car and the evening harbour
Odongdo is a small island tied to the mainland by a 768-metre breakwater. You can walk it or take the little Dongbaek Train; when we checked on 3 October 2026, VisitKorea listed the train at 1,000 won, running roughly from 09:30 to 17:00 with a midday break, while the island itself is open around the clock and free. VisitKorea describes around 3,600 naturally growing camellia trees — Korea's largest camellia grove — and a 2.5-kilometre trail through the woods and along the cliffs, past the lighthouse and rock formations such as Yonggul Cave. The flowers begin in January and peak in March, but the shaded forest walk is pleasant in any season. Odongdo is part of Hallyeohaesang National Park.
The Yeosu Maritime Cable Car was Korea's first to cross the sea, linking Jasan Park (Haeya Station) on the mainland side, by the Odongdo breakwater, with Dolsan Park (Nora Station) across the water. VisitKorea gives 13 minutes one way and about 25 minutes for a round trip, with standard cabins and glass-floored Crystal Cabins. When we checked on 3 October 2026, its listing gave hours of 09:30 to 21:30 (last tickets at 21:00) and adult round-trip fares of 17,000 won (standard) and 24,000 won (Crystal); confirm on the operator's site, which we could not load. Ride it late in the afternoon so that the return leg shows the city lighting up.
Afterwards walk down to the waterfront below Geobukseon Bridge. The Romantic Cart Bars are a row of food trucks — VisitKorea counts eighteen — serving seafood with a view of the night sea; when we checked, the listing gave 18:00 to 01:00 from March to October and 17:00 to midnight from November to February. Hamel Lighthouse, named after Hendrick Hamel, author of Hamel's Journal, stands at the end of the nearby breakwater.

Make time for the local food
What to eat and where to look

Gejang baekban (marinated crab set meal)
Yeosu's signature meal: crab marinated in soy sauce or in a spicy chilli seasoning, served with rice and a spread of side dishes that often include tongue-sole salad and gat kimchi. VisitKorea notes that spicy marinated crab, unlike the soy version, does not need to be aged.
- Where to look
- Bongsan Gejang Baekban Street in Bongsan-dong, which VisitKorea puts about a seven-minute drive from the Yeosu Specialty Seafood Market.
- Fit it into your day
- Make it a long lunch on your Dolsando or old-town day; the side dishes alone are a meal.
Raw marinated shellfish; skip it if you are pregnant, have a weak immune system or a shellfish allergy.
Dolsan gat kimchi (leaf mustard kimchi)
Kimchi made from the leaf mustard grown on Dolsando, whose wide, tender, hairless leaves suit pickling. It is crisp, pungent and slightly bitter, deepening as it ferments, and is seasoned with chilli and salted anchovy. You will also meet it in Yeosu samhap and in a cold noodle dish, gatkimchi guksumari.
- Where to look
- Specialist shops on the road below Hyangiram, the food section of the Yeosu Fish Market, and as a side dish at most local restaurants.
- Fit it into your day
- Taste it with a crab set meal first, then buy a sealed pack on your way back from Dolsando.
Made with salted seafood, so not vegetarian; strong-smelling, so pack it well for trains.
Yeosu samhap
A sizzling griddle of fresh octopus, pork belly and Dolsan gat kimchi cooked together — the signature dish at the harbour food trucks, according to VisitKorea.
- Where to look
- The Romantic Cart Bars on the waterfront under Geobukseon Bridge, near Hamel Lighthouse.
- Fit it into your day
- Dinner after the cable car on your first evening; share one with a drink and the night view.
Busy at weekends and during the exhibition; the trucks keep their own hours and the street has a monthly closing day.
Seodae hoe muchim (tongue-sole salad)
Raw tongue sole and vegetables dressed with makgeolli vinegar, chilli paste and a little sugar — sweet, tangy and spicy. VisitKorea lists it as a local food of Yeosu.
- Where to look
- Seafood restaurants around the fish markets and as a side dish with crab set meals.
- Fit it into your day
- Order it as a shared plate with rice at lunch, or mix it into rice as locals do.
Raw fish.
Jangeotang (eel soup)
Eel simmered with soybean paste, cabbage, bracken, bean sprouts and taro stems, sometimes finished with perilla seed powder. VisitKorea lists it as a local food of Yeosu.
- Where to look
- Seafood restaurants in the old harbour area and near the markets.
- Fit it into your day
- A warming breakfast or lunch, especially before a ferry or an early start at Hyangiram.
Rich and filling, with soybean paste; not suitable for vegetarians.
Hyangiram Hermitage and Dolsando
Dolsando, which VisitKorea calls Korea's seventh-largest island, is joined to the city by Dolsan Bridge, completed in 1984. Among the rocks of Geumosan on the island stands Hyangiram, one of four Korean hermitages dedicated to prayer to Avalokitesvara, the bodhisattva of compassion. VisitKorea traces it to the monk Wonhyo in 644, renamed in 958 and again in 1715, when it took the name that refers to facing the sun; the main hall was rebuilt in 2012 after a fire. The buildings sit among a dense camellia forest and the rock formations of Geumosan, with a wide view over the sea.
When we checked on 3 October 2026, VisitKorea listed Hyangiram as open from sunrise to sunset every day, with free admission. Come early: the hermitage is best known for sunrise, and on New Year's Eve the village below hosts the Hyangiram Sunrise Festival. VisitKorea's Yeosu guide recommends a taxi or rental car for Hyangiram rather than relying on buses.
On the way down, look for Dolsan gat kimchi, made from the island's leaf mustard; one shop listed by VisitKorea, just below the hermitage, mixes the kimchi to order and packs it to take away. If you are carrying it on a train, ask for it to be sealed for travel.

The old town, markets and a crab lunch
Above the old harbour, the Goso-dong Mural Village climbs a hill in 1,004 metres of painted walls and steps — the number sounds like 'angel' (cheonsa) in Korean — with the Yi Sun-sin Tactical Kite Museum and a viewpoint at Opodae Park. It is free and open at all hours.
Yeosu was the site of the Joseon navy's Jeolla base, and Admiral Yi Sun-sin commanded his fleet from here during the Imjin War (1592–1598). Jinnamgwan, a National Treasure built in 1599 on the site of his headquarters, is the largest single-storey government building of the period in the region. When we checked on 3 October 2026, VisitKorea listed it open daily from 09:00 to 17:00 in winter and to 18:00 in summer. Jasan Park, at the start of the Odongdo breakwater, has a 15-metre statue of the admiral.
For lunch, head to Bongsan Gejang Baekban Street, designated in 2009, where restaurants serve the city's marinated crab set meal with soy-marinated and spicy crab and a spread of side dishes. The fish markets on Yeogaekseon Terminal-gil, by the coastal passenger terminal, are the place to see what the boats brought in: VisitKorea describes the Yeosu Fish Market as the largest of the city's three seafood markets, with live fish, dried seafood and local gat kimchi, and listed it open 06:00 to 21:00, closed on the second and fourth Tuesday, when we checked.
Islands and the 2026 World Island Exhibition
If you have a third day, use it on the water. Geumodo, in Dadohaehaesang National Park, is known for the Bireong-gil, a coastal cliff trail of five sections, 18.5 kilometres in all, which VisitKorea estimates at about eight and a half hours end to end; one section is enough for a day trip. VisitKorea gives about 25 minutes by boat from Singi Port on Dolsando, or about an hour from the Yeosu Coastal Passenger Terminal. Remote Geomundo, around 110 kilometres out and about two hours by ferry, needs an overnight stay.
The 2026 World Island Exhibition Yeosu Korea runs from 5 September to 4 November 2026, with its main venue in the Jinmo district of Dolsan and sub-venues on Gaedo and Geumodo and at the Expo site. When we checked on 3 October 2026, the official site listed 6 October as a closed day and posted notices about free shuttle buses, some routes not running, and weekend services to Geumodo; check those notices on the day. Expo Ocean Park also hosts the Big-O Show, which VisitKorea's August 2026 guide lists at 20:00 from Wednesday to Sunday until 8 November.
Ferries can be delayed or cancelled in bad weather or rough seas. Check the current schedule before you set out, carry water and snacks for smaller islands, and keep a buffer before any onward train.

Getting there and getting around
VisitKorea puts Yeosu at around three hours from the Seoul area by KTX; trains end at Yeosu EXPO Station and also stop at Yeocheon. KTX services leave from more than one Seoul station, so check which one your ticket names. From Gwangju, VisitKorea lists intercity buses to Yeocheon in about 1 hour 25 minutes. Suncheon, with its bay wetland and national garden, is a short way up the same line and makes an easy half-day or overnight addition.
Yeosu Airport has flights to Gimpo (Seoul) and Jeju of about an hour. VisitKorea gives around 20 minutes by city bus from the airport to Yeocheon Station and about an hour to the Expo Station area, so a taxi is worth considering if you arrive with bags.
In town, walk and use taxis. VisitKorea also points to the Yeosu Romantic Tour Bus for the main sights. On Dolsando and for Hyangiram, a taxi or rental car saves a lot of time over buses.
- Day 1: KTX to Yeosu EXPO Station, Odongdo in the afternoon, the cable car at dusk, dinner at the Romantic Cart Bars.
- Day 2: early taxi to Hyangiram, gat kimchi on the way back, crab set lunch at Bongsan, Goso-dong in the late afternoon, the Big-O Show if it is running.
- Day 3 (optional): Geumodo for a section of the Bireong-gil, or the World Island Exhibition until 4 November 2026.
Practical questions
How many days do I need in Yeosu?
Two nights cover Odongdo, the cable car, Hyangiram, the old town and a seafood market at an easy pace. Add a third night for an island such as Geumodo or for the World Island Exhibition.
How do I get from Seoul to Yeosu?
Take the KTX to Yeosu EXPO Station; VisitKorea gives about three hours from the Seoul area. You can also fly from Gimpo to Yeosu Airport in about an hour and take a bus or taxi into town.
Can I reach Hyangiram by public transport?
It is on Dolsando, across the bridge from the city, and VisitKorea's Yeosu guide recommends a taxi or rental car to save time. Go early in the day, as the hermitage is open from sunrise to sunset.
Is the Crystal Cabin on the cable car worth it?
It has a glass floor, so you see the water below you; the standard cabin has the same route and views. When we checked on 3 October 2026, VisitKorea listed the Crystal round trip at 24,000 won for adults against 17,000 won for a standard cabin.
When is the best time to see the camellias on Odongdo?
VisitKorea says the camellias begin flowering in January and peak in March.
When is the 2026 World Island Exhibition?
From 5 September to 4 November 2026, with the main venue in Dolsan's Jinmo district and sub-venues on Gaedo, Geumodo and at the Expo site. The official site listed 6 October as a closed day when we checked.
