Where to stay in Sri Lanka: one base for each stop of the loop
Sri Lanka rewards the traveller who sleeps two nights in a place instead of one night in many. The ten-day loop in our first-trip guide has five bases, and each has its own character: a city hotel in the Fort district of Colombo, a quiet garden near the rock fortress at Sigiriya, a lake or a hillside at Kandy, a terrace above the tea slopes at Ella and a walled Dutch town at Galle. This guide names one hotel for each, adds Nuwara Eliya, Mirissa and the safari lodges for the trips that bend away from the loop, and gives the dated rate for a room at each base that prints one.

- Suggested time
- 9 nights on the ten-day loop: 1 in Colombo, 2 each at Sigiriya, Kandy, Ella and Galle; departure on day 10
- Where to stay
- Colombo for the first night, or Negombo after a late landing, then the Sigiriya area, Kandy, Ella and Galle; Nuwara Eliya, Mirissa and the safari lodges at Yala and Udawalawe are alternatives
- Season and timing
- Mirissa's beaches are at their best from November to April (Sri Lanka Tourism), and Lily Mirissa's rate rises from USD 55 in October 2026 to USD 105 between 24 December and 10 January.
The short answer
Book nine nights as the loop runs: one in Colombo, then two each at Sigiriya, Kandy, Ella and Galle, and leave on day 10. Swap Galle for Mirissa if the last two nights should be a beach stay, or add two nights in Nuwara Eliya for cool evenings and tea. Fix the flights and the five rooms first, then book the Kandy to Ella seats for day 6. Two key prices, as listed on the hotels' own pages when we checked on 17 October 2026: USD 50 per night for a garden-view double room at Tranquil Trails in Sigiriya, breakfast and taxes included, and LKR 14,500 per night for a Deluxe Room at The Golden Crown Hotel in Kandy.
Choose the base by the evening you want
The loop runs in one direction and never doubles back: a night in Colombo or near the airport, two nights in the Sigiriya area, two in Kandy, two in Ella and two in Galle, then the coast train from Galle to Colombo Fort for the flight home on day 10. Two nights in each place leave one full day for the town itself, which is what the loop needs; seven bases in nine nights would leave you in a car most of the time.
Four changes suit different trips. Mirissa instead of Galle makes the last two nights a beach stay. Nuwara Eliya, the cool tea town, adds two nights between Kandy and Ella and makes the trip eleven nights. A safari adds one night at Udawalawe or two at Yala on the way to the south coast. Negombo can take the first night if you land late. The legs between the bases are:
- Airport to Colombo: the airport lies 35 km north of Colombo and 6 km from Negombo (Sri Lanka Tourism's travel-tips page); its airports page says 30 km. No official page gives the drive time from Colombo to the airport; allow extra time at peak hours.
- Colombo to Sigiriya: Sri Lanka Tourism gives the distance as 169 km; no official page gives the drive time, so ask your driver when you book.
- Sigiriya to Kandy and Ella to Galle: no official page publishes the road distance or time from Sigiriya to Kandy or from Ella to Galle; ask your driver for both when you book.
- Kandy to Ella: the hill-line train, 162.63 km on the railway's fare table. The railway's notice for 20 June 2026 schedules trains between Nanu Oya and Badulla and lists no Colombo or Kandy trains, so check the booking site's train list for your date. Reservations open 30 days before the date of travel.
- Galle to Colombo Fort: the coast train, 113.89 km on the railway's distance table. The railway's leaflet lists four coast trains between Maradana station in Colombo and Matara or Beliatta, 3 hours 12 minutes to 4 hours 22 minutes end to end, and prints no Galle time. By road, Sri Lanka Tourism puts Galle Fort 113 km from Colombo by the A2 road, and its journey-time chart (undated) gives 3 hours.
Colombo or Negombo: the first night
The first night is a choice between the capital and the beach town beside the airport. Negombo is the shorter transfer after a late landing, 6 km from the airport (distances above); for a Negombo room, read the rate on the hotel's own page before you book. Colombo is also where the loop ends, because the coast train from Galle arrives at Colombo Fort. The transport guide covers the car from the airport.
In Colombo the choice is between the Fort and the sea front. Fairway Colombo, at No. 07 Hospital Street, is a 181-room hotel in Colombo Fort, the district where the coast train from Galle ends the loop. For a night with more ceremony, the Galle Face Hotel, one of the oldest hotels east of the Suez, faces Galle Face Green along the seafront. Our Colombo guide covers what to see from either.
On day 10 the train brings you to Colombo Fort and a car takes you to the airport. The two morning coast trains in the railway's leaflet reach Maradana by 09.47 AM, so an evening flight is the easy fit.

Sigiriya and Kandy: the first two stops of the loop
The Sigiriya area is spread out under the rock fortress and near the cave temples of Dambulla, so the choice is the setting rather than a street. Tranquil Trails Sigiriya, at Kimbissa, is about 3 km from the Sigiriya Rock Fortress by the hotel's own page; it has four room types, from garden-view doubles to timber chalets, and its balcony rooms look over a pool to the mountains. Its restaurant serves traditional rice and curry. Dambulla town is the alternative if you rely on buses: Sri Lanka Tourism puts Sigiriya about 25 km from Dambulla, and the buses between them run every 30 minutes from 06:30 to 18:00.
Kandy gathers around its lake and the Temple of the Tooth, and the choice is between the lake and the hills. Queen's Hotel is a heritage hotel more than 160 years old that faces Kandy Lake and sits close to the temple. The Golden Crown Hotel, at 322 Udagama on Ampitiya Road, has 156 rooms; ask the hotel how far the lake and the Temple of the Tooth are. Our Kandy guide covers the temple, the lake and the gardens.
The Esala Perahera, the annual procession of the Sacred Tooth Relic through Kandy, falls in July or August, on dates that change each year and that the Sri Dalada Maligawa announces. If your trip touches those months, book the Kandy rooms before the rest.

Ella and Nuwara Eliya: the tea hills
Ella is the town the Kandy train runs to and a base for walking among tea slopes. Ella Flower Garden Resort, at the 3rd Mile Post on Passara Road, is 2 km from the centre of Ella and a 5-minute drive from the station by its own pages, with a free pick-up from the station on request; the Nine Arch Bridge is 1.5 km away. Its Standard Garden Room opens onto a garden terrace and is the cheapest of its six room types; the Superior Room with Ella Rock View adds a balcony that looks straight at the rock, which is where the evening goes. Booking directly includes an artisan breakfast and a welcome tea.
Nuwara Eliya is higher and cooler, and The Golden Ridge, at 395 Bambarakelle Road, stands at 7,339 feet by its own page, with a rooftop lounge and Deluxe rooms with a single, double or triple bed. The hill line between Kandy and Ella has a stop at Nanu Oya, 98.1 km from Kandy. Pack light woollens for the hills. The Ella guide covers the train, the walks and the tea slopes.

Galle Fort and the beaches of the south coast
The south-west coast is the one this loop sleeps on. Sri Lanka Tourism's Mirissa page gives November to April as the winter season, with fine weather and calm seas, and May to October as the off season, when the sea gets a bit rough. The German Foreign Office (page of 17 October 2026) puts the south-west rains from June to October and adds that the pattern is blurring and heavy rain can fall in any region in any month. The best-time guide has the month-by-month detail.
Galle Fort is a Dutch-era walled town, best walked at the cool ends of the day, and a room inside the walls puts the ramparts at your door. The Fort's hotels are small heritage houses. Amangalla occupies a 17th-century Dutch colonial building within the ramparts, with a veranda on Church Street. The Galle Fort Hotel has 11 suites in a Dutch mansion that is 300 years old. Taru Villas Rampart Street, at 25 Rampart Street, is a restored Dutch merchant's home on the ramparts. The Bartizan at 77 Pedlar Street offers sea-view balcony rooms.
No hotel inside the Fort prints a rate on its own page, so the loop's two Galle nights are priced at the Galle Holiday Inn, 53/28 Gagaaddarawatte, which stands outside the Fort walls; its page says it is "just 5 minutes away" from Galle Fort. It lists a Deluxe Double Room, a Family Room and a whole boutique villa, and a traditional Sri Lankan breakfast for every guest. The hotel's page lists a rate, but its secure page did not open when we checked on 17 October 2026, so confirm the rate at booking. It suits the traveller who does not mind the short trip to the Fort. Our south-coast beaches guide covers Unawatuna and Weligama, the other bays along the same coast.
Mirissa is the beach alternative. Lily Mirissa opened in December 2025 on 2nd Lane off Harbour Road. It has 15 rooms, 12 double and 3 triple, in a garden 500 m from Mirissa Beach, and the harbour where the whale-watching boats leave is 300 m away. It serves breakfast only, and its page already shows 30 December 2026 to 1 January 2027 as fully booked. The railway's seat-reservation table prints no price for Mirissa, so the booking site's train list for your date shows the train and its price for day 10. France Diplomatie (page of 27 September 2026) strongly discourages sea swimming on the west coast from April to November, and says tourists drown every year on the beaches of the west and south of the country, notably Hikkaduwa, Mirissa and Tangalle, especially in the monsoon months; the UK Foreign Office (page of 17 October 2026) says many beaches have dangerous surf or rip tides at certain times of the year and advises asking the hotel or tour operator before going in.
Yala and Udawalawe: a night for the safari
The two parks lie inland of the south coast and each needs its own night. Udawalawe adds one night and the following morning to the loop, on the way from Ella to the south coast; Yala asks two nights at the edge of the park. Grand Udawalawe Safari Resort, at No. 912 Thanamalwila Road, is about a 20-minute drive from the park entrance by the resort's own page and has five room types, from a ground-floor Deluxe Room with a garden terrace to a top-floor suite. Jetwing Yala stands at Palatupana on the park's coastal side and calls itself the closest hotel to the reserve; when we checked on 17 October 2026, the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority's home page said the main road into the park from Palatupana is closed due to repairs until further notice and that visitors should use the Katagamuwa entrance (see our Yala guide), so ask which entrance your safari uses before you book there. Cinnamon Wild Yala is at Tissamaharama and borders the park. None of the three prints a room rate on its own page, so ask each for a quote for your dates. Our Yala and Udawalawe guides cover the parks.

What the rooms cost
Each line below is the "from" rate printed on the hotel's own page when we checked on 17 October 2026, for the room named, per room per night, with the number of guests that the page lists for it. The hotels quote in different currencies, so the lines are not converted.
Only Tranquil Trails states that its price includes taxes; the other rates may rise once tax and service charge are added. Ask Galle Face Hotel and Queen's Hotel for a rate for your dates; The Bartizan prices in USD by season, with breakfast, afternoon tea and Wi-Fi included.
- Colombo Fort, Fairway Colombo: a Superior King Room costs from USD 55 per night, listed for up to three guests.
- Sigiriya, Tranquil Trails Sigiriya: a Double Room with Garden View (one queen bed, two guests) costs USD 50 per night, breakfast and taxes included.
- Kandy, The Golden Crown Hotel: a Deluxe Room (up to three adults) starts from LKR 14,500 per night; the page also lists a Sri Lankan residents' rate and does not say which rate this figure is, so ask which one a guest from abroad pays.
- Ella, Ella Flower Garden Resort: a Standard Garden Room (two adults) costs from USD 55, or LKR 16,500, per night; a direct booking includes breakfast and a welcome tea.
- Nuwara Eliya, The Golden Ridge: a Deluxe room starts from LKR 15,730 per night; the page names no occupancy.
- Galle, Galle Holiday Inn: the hotel's page lists a Deluxe Double Room at LKR 6,500 per night, with a traditional Sri Lankan breakfast for every guest. Its secure page did not open when we checked on 17 October 2026, so confirm the rate at booking.
- Mirissa, Lily Mirissa: a double room (two adults), per room per night, breakfast included: USD 55 in October 2026, USD 65 in November, USD 72 from 1 to 23 December, USD 105 from 24 December to 10 January and USD 90 from 11 January to 30 April 2027.
- Mirissa, Lily Mirissa supplements: USD 10 more when a child between 2 and 12 shares the parents' bed, USD 20 more for a triple room and USD 5 less for one guest.

Nine nights of rooms, and paying
At the rate listed for each base of the nine-night loop (one night in Colombo and two each in Sigiriya, Kandy, Ella and Galle), counting two people sharing each room, the rooms come to USD 265 for the Colombo, Sigiriya and Ella rooms and LKR 42,000 for the Kandy and Galle rooms; the Galle part of that total is the Galle Holiday Inn's LKR 6,500 a night, the rate the hotel's page lists, although its secure page did not open when we checked on 17 October 2026, so confirm the rate at booking. The two train legs add Kandy to Ella in reserved second class at LKR 1,700 a seat and Galle to Colombo Fort in air-conditioned first class at LKR 1,100 a seat: LKR 5,600 for two, and LKR 5,880 with the railway's 5% online fee. That brings the rupee total to LKR 47,880 on top of the USD 265, and that total includes the unconfirmed Galle rate. Converted at the Central Cultural Fund's rate of LKR 336 per USD (its table of 14 October 2026), the LKR 47,880 is USD 142.50, so the trip comes to about USD 408 for two in total, a figure that depends on that day's exchange rate and the Galle rate. The railway's January 2024 leaflet shows reserved seats only in air-conditioned first class on the coast trains; the booking site lists first, second and third class. The sum leaves out the car with a driver for the three road legs between bases and the two airport transfers, because no official page publishes a rate for a car with a driver (agree the all-in price when you book), meals other than the breakfast included in a rate, tickets, and any tax or service charge the pages do not include.
A guesthouse that undercuts the lowest line above is a different kind of booking. The German Foreign Office (page of 17 October 2026) says that foreigners are generally left alone, but that women travelling alone or in small groups have been victims of violent and sexual assault, also in tourist centres; it links drugged drinks to very cheap lodgings and reports break-ins in hotels and guesthouses. For a solo woman or a small group, choose a room with a staffed reception, as at the hotels above, and keep valuables locked away whatever you pay.
Paying has its own rule. Under a Central Bank of Sri Lanka rule of January 2022, hotels licensed by the tourism authority take payment from guests who live outside Sri Lanka in foreign exchange, or in rupees only if you can show that the rupees came from foreign currency converted through a licensed bank or money changer, so keep your exchange receipts.
Practical questions
How many nights should I book in each place in Sri Lanka?
Two nights in each of the Sigiriya area, Kandy, Ella and Galle, and one night in Colombo at the start. That is the loop in the first-trip guide, with nine nights and departure on day 10; one night per place leaves the trip as a series of journeys.
Should I sleep in Colombo or Negombo on the first night?
Colombo suits the loop because the coast train from Galle ends at Colombo Fort; Negombo is 6 km from the airport, while Colombo is 35 km on Sri Lanka Tourism's travel-tips page and 30 km on its airports page, so Negombo is the shorter transfer after a late landing.
Should I stay in Galle or at Mirissa?
Stay in Galle for walking, ideally inside the Fort: the ramparts, the lanes and the Dutch buildings are at your door. Stay in Mirissa for a beach and the whale-watching harbour, 300 m from Lily Mirissa. Both are on the south-west coast, so the loop works with either; Galle is the easier base for the coast train to Colombo Fort.
Where do I sleep for a safari at Yala or Udawalawe?
Sleep at the edge of the park: Grand Udawalawe Safari Resort stands near Udawalawe National Park, Jetwing Yala is the closest hotel to the Yala reserve by its own description, but it is at Palatupana, where the main road into the park is closed, so visitors use the Katagamuwa entrance (Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority home page, checked on 17 October 2026), and Cinnamon Wild Yala borders the park. Udawalawe needs one night and Yala two.
What does a room cost each night?
On the hotels' own pages, when we checked on 17 October 2026, a room cost from LKR 14,500 a night at The Golden Crown in Kandy, LKR 15,730 at The Golden Ridge in Nuwara Eliya, USD 50 at Tranquil Trails in Sigiriya, from USD 55 at Fairway Colombo and Ella Flower Garden, and USD 55 to USD 105 at Lily Mirissa, by season. The Galle Holiday Inn's page lists LKR 6,500, but its secure page did not open, so confirm the rate at booking.
Is breakfast included in the room rate?
Tranquil Trails Sigiriya, Lily Mirissa and the Galle Holiday Inn list breakfast with the room, and Ella Flower Garden includes it with a direct booking. For Fairway Colombo, The Golden Crown and The Golden Ridge, ask at booking whether breakfast is in the rate.
Do I pay in rupees or in dollars?
Hotels licensed by the tourism authority must take payment from guests who live abroad in foreign exchange, and may take rupees only against proof that the rupees came from converted foreign currency, under a Central Bank rule of January 2022. Pay with a foreign card or foreign currency and keep your exchange receipts.
Is Nuwara Eliya worth two nights on the loop?
It earns them if you want cool air and a tea-estate day between Kandy and Ella, and the two nights make the trip eleven nights with departure on day 12. On nine nights, leave Nuwara Eliya out and put the time into Ella.
