Best time to visit Cambodia: temples, rivers and islands

Choose the season around the part of Cambodia you most want to see. Temple days need time outside, Tonle Sap changes with the water, and an island stay depends on a boat crossing. For a short first visit, four nights in Siem Reap are easier to adapt than a route that also tries to reach the coast.

Season and timing
The World Bank and Asian Development Bank climate profile describes Cambodia’s dry season as November to April, with cooler weather particularly from November to January.

The short answer

Book four nights in Siem Reap for a first temple trip, preferably in the cooler November–January period. Reserve the room and your first temple outing, then buy the three-day Angkor pass. The pass costs US$62 and a private SAI–hotel car US$45 each way for up to three people, listed on 15 October 2026. Choose a longer trip for the islands, with a mainland night before an onward flight; choose Tonle Sap for its changing lake landscape rather than a guaranteed water level.

Choose dates for the trip you want

For temples, November to January is the first period to consider: the cooler part of the dry season is a useful starting point for days on foot. February to April remains within the dry-season description, but the climate profile places the highest temperatures before the rains begin. Keep the early starts and midday rest even when travelling in the cooler period.

October and November are transition choices: leave room for rain, especially if a lake or island outing is central to the trip. A flexible temple plan with a museum alternative is easier to rearrange than a route built around a fixed boat connection.

For river and lake scenery, decide whether changing water is part of the attraction; Tonle Sap’s floodplain changes are described below. For islands, use the dry season as the starting window and keep flexible return travel. A temple trip has an indoor substitute close to its base; an island holiday still depends on the sea crossing.

Cambodia is not uniform. The climate profile identifies particularly heavy wet-season rainfall in the southeast and northwest. Avoid turning a national seasonal label into a promise for a particular beach, boat departure or sunrise.

For 2026, the Royal Embassy of Cambodia in London’s calendar lists Khmer New Year on 14–16 April, Pchum Ben on 10–12 October and the Water Festival on 23–25 November as Cambodian public holidays. Reserve rooms and onward transport before choosing a holiday stay, and check attraction opening with the venue. Choose the festival dates when celebrations are part of the trip; choose other dates when quiet temple days matter more. The 16–20 November example below falls outside those three holiday blocks.

Angkor: early access and room to pause

Angkor Wat’s moat, raised galleries and central towers reward a visit after the sunrise photographs. At Bayon, the stone faces above the towers contrast with reliefs showing history and everyday life. Ta Prohm adds the sight of roots meeting ruined walls. Together they give a short trip more variety than repeated attempts to catch a clear dawn.

On 15 October 2026, Angkor Enterprise listed Angkor Wat at 05:00–17:30, Bayon at 07:30–17:30 and Phnom Bakheng at 05:00–19:00.

Opening time is not sunrise time. Arrange the pickup for your actual date and follow each temple’s access hours rather than using one park-wide closing time. Mad Monkey’s sunrise tour leaves its Siem Reap lobby at 04:15; Angkor Friendly Driver’s Small Circuit pickup is 04:30 or 05:00 depending on the season. Either allows time for the journey before the temple visit.

Keep water and a rest stop in the day plan. If heavy rain makes the outdoor day unattractive, move the museum into that slot and use another temple day for the galleries. Four nights give three full days to arrange; a forecast can change their order without a hotel move. At Ta Prohm, follow the current visitor route and check APSARA’s notices for conservation restrictions.

On 15 October 2026, Angkor Enterprise listed an Angkor pass at US$37 for one day, US$62 for three visiting days with expiry in seven days, or US$72 for seven visiting days with expiry in 30 days.

Buy your Angkor pass on Angkor Enterprise’s official website, select the pass and visit date, enter the quantity and nationality, and pay by credit or debit card or KHQR. Save the emailed e-ticket; digital and printed copies are accepted at entry.

Cover your shoulders and knees at sacred sites, follow restricted-area signs, and keep off loose stones and fragile structures. Do not touch carvings, remove objects, smoke or litter. Ask before photographing monks, and do not give money or sweets to children.

Tonle Sap: choose the landscape, then the outing

Tonle Sap is a lake and a wider mosaic of freshwater swamps, floodplains and seasonally flooded rice fields and grasslands. UNESCO describes the Mekong overflowing during periods of rainfall and the lake expanding by up to five times. The water changes the relationship between open lake and surrounding land; a photograph from another season is not a guide to the shore you will see.

For the seasonal contrast, a Mekong River Commission technical paper describes the lake’s lowest depths in April and the flood height between late September and early October. Those are historical seasonal patterns, not a prediction for your travel date. Higher water means a broader flooded landscape; in the low-water period more of the margins are exposed. Choose the landscape first; the operator sets the boat route and boarding point for the water on your dates.

No operator fare for a lake outing is listed here, so the four-night temple model below includes none; a lake day would replace a temple day.

For a longer river-focused trip, the Phnom Penh and Kratie guides cover different bases. The national rainy-season dates say nothing about boat navigation windows or dolphin sightings.

The coast: plan the return before the flight

Kampot and Kep offer a mainland coast stay; Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloem add a sea crossing from Sihanoukville. Choose the island and the hotel’s landing beach together, since a ticket to an island does not finish the journey to every hotel. Keep this as a separate extension beyond the four Siem Reap nights.

For a beach-led extension, start with November–April, the national dry-season window; November–January also offers the cooler period described in the climate profile. In the wetter part of the year, favour a mainland base if you want to keep outdoor plans easy to change. The tradeoff differs from Tonle Sap, where higher water is part of the attraction, and from Siem Reap, where the museum can replace an outdoor slot.

GTVC runs scheduled speedboats between Sihanoukville and Koh Rong or Koh Rong Samloem. Book through its website or Sihanoukville office. Weather and demand can change the schedule.

On 15 October 2026, GTVC listed adult tickets at US$17 one way or US$30 return. Its Sihanoukville departures to Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloem were 08:00, 11:00, 14:00 and 16:00. The outward crossing was 45 minutes to Koh Rong and 30 minutes to Koh Rong Samloem. Return departures were 08:45, 11:45, 14:45 and 16:45, taking 40 minutes from Koh Rong and 30 minutes from Koh Rong Samloem.

GTVC’s booking results list Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, Gate 1, as the mainland boarding point for these departures. Follow the boarding address on your ticket; the company’s general contact page uses the name Tourism Pier.

For the published route records, Koh Rong uses Community Pier and Koh Rong Samloem uses Orchid Resort-GTVC. Select the exact stop when booking and arrange the onward hotel transfer with the accommodation. The island guides explain the beach choices.

Be at the pier 30 minutes before departure. GTVC includes one bag up to 20 kg. Return tickets are open-dated: arrange the return at its counter or pier. If bad weather prevents the departure, GTVC says it refunds the ticket.

Book a mainland night after the island return and before an onward flight. A boat-ticket refund does not replace a missed flight or buy back a holiday day.

Four nights in Siem Reap, with an indoor alternative

Keep the same Siem Reap room for all four nights. The dated model uses Tara Angkor Hotel on Preah Sihanouk Avenue, with hotel pickups for the two private-car temple outings and separate rides for town meals and the Mad Monkey sunrise departure. The example dates are 16–20 November 2026, within the dry-season window; they are an illustration, not a forecast.

Day 1 — arrival. Settle in, buy the Angkor pass and eat in town. Day 2 — the first temple morning. Take Mad Monkey’s sunrise outing to Angkor Wat, Bayon and Ta Prohm, with the lunch option on return. Day 3 — a closer look. Take Angkor Friendly Driver’s Small Circuit Option 1, returning to the main temples. Day 4 — the Big Circuit. Its Option 1 visits Preah Khan, Neak Pean, Ta Som, East Mebon and Pre Rup. Day 5 — departure. Return to SAI without adding a temple stop before the flight.

Angkor National Museum is the indoor alternative when you want to change an outdoor day. Its galleries cover Khmer civilisation, religion, kings, Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom and ancient costume, alongside the Gallery of 1,000 Buddha Images. It can also help you read the temple sculpture before going outside.

On 15 October 2026, the museum’s seasonal table listed 08:30–18:00 from 1 April to 30 September and 08:30–18:30 from 1 October to 31 March; its FAQ says it opens daily and gives a general 18:00 close. Visit earlier in the day and allow the museum’s suggested 1–2 hours. The museum publishes no admission price, so admission is not included in the budget. Rent the optional English audio guide at the ticket booth, listed at US$5 per set.

Use SPOONS for a town breakfast or beef saraman, and HAVEN for amok or lok lak. On 15 October 2026, SPOONS listed num banh chok at KHR14,000 and US$3.50, served 07:00–11:00 daily, and beef saraman at US$8.99. HAVEN listed amok at US$7.50 and lok lak at US$8, including 10% VAT with no service charge. SPOONS does not state tax or service charges, so they are not included in the budget. Tell either restaurant about allergies when ordering.

Airport and temple transport

For Siem Reap, use Siem Reap Angkor International Airport (SAI). Book the Bangkok–Siem Reap leg by air.

On 15 October 2026, Siem Reap Airport Bus listed US$8 each way between Siem Reap Angkor International Airport and its town stop on 7 Makara Road in front of ACE School. The airport counter is on the left after leaving arrivals. Book on the operator’s website.

The airport operator places SAI 50 km from Siem Reap provincial town, and no operator publishes a car or bus journey time. For the model, book Royal Angkor Tours’ SAI–hotel private car in both directions, at US$45 each way for one to three passengers. Its own transfer includes an air-conditioned vehicle, driver, bottled water and pickup or drop-off at the Siem Reap hotel; book the one-way transfers for 16 and 20 November through its own SAI transfer page. Cancellation is free until 48 hours before pickup. The two airport cars total US$90. Rides between the hotel and Mad Monkey’s sunrise departure point or restaurants have no published fare and are not included; the two private-car temple outings include hotel pickup and return.

The bus operator’s departures listed on 15 October 2026 were 09:30, 11:00, 12:30, 15:00, 16:00, 17:00, 17:30, 19:00, 20:00 and 22:00 from SAI; return buses left town at 05:30, 07:00, 08:00, 10:00, 12:00, 13:30, 15:00, 16:00, 17:30 and 19:00. Choose the return around your airline’s check-in deadline and allow for the hotel-to-stop transfer. Free drop-off from the town stop applies to hotels within 2 km; its hotel pickup is listed at US$2, without saying whether per ride or per person; ask the operator if you choose the bus.

For the first temple day, Mad Monkey listed US$18 per person with lunch and a drink on return, or US$15 for the tour alone, on 15 October 2026. Both include guide, transport and water; the Angkor pass is separate. Its published outing window is 04:15–12:30, with departure back to the hostel at 12:00. Book on its tour page, select the date, option and two participants. A US$6 breakfast box must be ordered the previous day.

Angkor Friendly Driver’s published private air-conditioned cars cost US$50 per vehicle for Small Circuit Option 1 and US$50 for Big Circuit Option 1, each for up to three passengers. Both include hotel pickup and return, English-speaking driver, fuel, parking, water and towels. The driver waits outside the temples; an accompanying English-speaking guide costs another US$50 for either outing. The Small Circuit returns around 16:00 after its seasonal early pickup; the Big Circuit runs from 08:30 to around 15:00. Use the request form on each tour page with the date, option, hotel and two passengers; meals and admission are separate.

On 15 October 2026, the UK FCDO advised against all but essential travel within 20 km of Cambodia’s land border with Thailand; Germany warned against travel within 20 km, and France formally advised against travel within 30 km on the Cambodian side. France’s Thailand advice uses 50 km on the Thai side. Our routes keep at least 50 km from the border and use flights from Bangkok; the land crossings are closed. Check your own government’s advice before booking.

A dated four-night cost model for two

Checked on 15 October 2026, this model is for two adults sharing one Tara Angkor Executive Suite, 16–20 November 2026, four nights. The hotel’s own booking page displayed US$579.15 for the full stay, with breakfast and all tax and service charges included. The selected rate covers two adults with no extra bed.

Room, admission and airport: US$579.15 + 2 × US$62 three-day Angkor passes + 2 × US$45 private airport cars = US$793.15. Temple transport: 2 × US$18 for the sunrise outing with lunch and a drink + US$50 Small Circuit car + US$50 Big Circuit car = US$136. These are the operators’ published tour tariffs.

Meals: hotel breakfasts are included in the room rate. The two sunrise breakfast boxes add 2 × US$6 = US$12 because the dawn tour leaves before an ordinary hotel breakfast. Two HAVEN dinners for two, each with one amok and one lok lak, cost 2 × (US$7.50 + US$8) = US$31. Two SPOONS dinners for two of beef saraman cost 4 × US$8.99 = US$35.96. The sunrise tour already supplies one lunch per person.

Partial trip subtotal: US$1,008.11, calculated as US$793.15 room/passes/airport cars + US$136 temple transport + US$12 breakfast boxes + US$31 HAVEN dinners + US$35.96 SPOONS dinners. It covers all four room nights for two adults with room tax, service charges and breakfast, both Angkor passes, both direct airport cars, three temple outings, one tour lunch and four dinners per person. Not included: SPOONS tax and service charges, breakfast on mornings when a car collects you before hotel breakfast, three other lunches, extra drinks, rides between the hotel, Mad Monkey’s departure point and restaurants, museum admission and audio guides, a lake outing, optional temple guides, flights, visas and insurance.

If the museum replaces the day 4 Big Circuit, remove the US$50 car: the priced portion becomes US$958.11, before museum admission, which is not included. Optional English audio guides add 2 × US$5 = US$10. The three-day Angkor passes stay in this calculation even though only two visiting days are used.

Practical questions

What is the best time for a first Cambodia trip?

Start with November to January for the cooler part of the dry season, and four nights in Siem Reap if Angkor is the priority. Keep the rest of the route tied to the experience you want.

Does the rainy season end in October?

Treat October and November as a transition and leave room for rain. Keep the order of the temple and museum days flexible rather than relying on a date when showers must end.

Is there a good alternative to temples in heavy rain?

Use Angkor National Museum for the Khmer civilisation and sculpture galleries, then move the outdoor visit to another day. Museum hours are in the four-night plan; the museum publishes no admission price, so the budget excludes it.

When should I visit Tonle Sap?

Late September and early October are the historical high-water period described by the Mekong River Commission; April is its low-water example. Choose between a broader flooded landscape and more exposed margins, then arrange the actual route for your dates.

Can I return from an island and fly out the same day?

Plan a mainland night between the island return and an onward flight. GTVC changes departures with weather; its bad-weather refund covers the boat ticket.

What does the Siem Reap budget cover?

It prices four Tara Angkor suite nights for two adults with breakfast and room taxes, both Angkor passes, direct airport cars, three temple outings and four dinners. The partial subtotal is US$1,008.11; town rides, other meals, SPOONS tax and service, and museum admission are not included.
