Koh Rong: three nights, beach choices and the ferry
Koh Rong is a beach stay that rewards staying put. White sand and forested land meet the sea, but the name on an island ticket matters as much as the island itself: a room on Long Set Beach is not beside every arrival pier. Give the island two full days, choose one beach base, and keep a night on the mainland before an onward flight. This route starts in Phnom Penh, crosses from Sihanoukville and returns to the capital.

- Suggested time
- 3 island nights plus 1 mainland night
- Where to stay
- Long Set Beach on Koh Rong; Phnom Penh for the final mainland night
- Season and timing
- The World Bank and Asian Development Bank climate profile describes Cambodia’s dry season as November to April, with cooler weather particularly from November to January.
The short answer
Book three nights on Long Set Beach and one final night in Phnom Penh before flying from Techo International Airport. Reserve the room, then GTVC’s Long Set Pier service and the final mainland night. On 15 October 2026, GTVC listed an adult return at US$30; Giant Ibis’s 1 November Phnom Penh–Sihanoukville booking result listed US$18 per seat, plus US$1 online service charge. The listed costs for two adults in this plan total US$411.50, before island meals, activities and local transfers. Choose Koh Rong for two unhurried beach days; allow the mainland night rather than joining a boat directly to a flight.
Choose the beach before the room
Koh Touch: choose a village-side stay if an evening scene matters more than seclusion. White Beach Bungalows, at Koh Tuch village, offers sea-view and family bungalows and warns that music from nearby parties can carry to its rooms. That combination gives a beach-facing room with the possibility of lively nights. GTVC names Koh Touch Pier as a separate stop; select that landing when booking accommodation around the village.
Long Set Beach: Mad Monkey sits on white sand, with saltwater swims outside and a beachfront bar for the evening. Its social programme includes family dinners and a fire show, while private bungalows let two travellers keep their own room. For a quieter style of stay on the same beach, Long Set Resort describes direct beach access and garden-view rooms among its facilities. This plan chooses Mad Monkey’s double bungalow and the Long Set Pier landing.
Sok San: Sok San Beach Resort pairs white sand and turquoise water with its own kayaking and island-discovery activities. It offers beach-facing and garden-facing pavilion rooms as well as larger chalets, giving a different experience from Mad Monkey’s hostel social programme. The resort operates its own boats directly to the hotel; guests arriving by another ferry make their own way along the beach. Those transfers are the resort’s service for its guests.
ASEAN Tourism describes Koh Rong’s white sandy shores and turquoise water, with both quiet beach settings and a party scene in the south. Use the beach for the holiday itself: changing base during a short stay uses the time you came to spend beside the water.
A three-night stay with two full beach days
Arrival day: leave Phnom Penh in the morning, continue through Sihanoukville to the booked island landing and settle into the bungalow. Keep the afternoon for the beach beside the room. Avoid booking a paid boat activity for the arrival afternoon, when a road or ferry delay would cost you the session.
First full day: stay on Long Set Beach. Have breakfast, walk along the shore near your accommodation and return for lunch and another swim when local conditions permit. The useful luxury here is time: you can leave your belongings at the room and return without organising another transfer.
Second full day: keep a second shore day, or choose an activity sold by your own accommodation. Mad Monkey advertises kayaking, paddleboarding and snorkelling from its Koh Rong property. Obtain the meeting point, current price, equipment and inclusions from its activity desk before booking; no paid sea excursion is included in this model. This guide does not promise a particular reef, wildlife encounter or glowing-water sighting.
Departure day: take the morning return boat, continue to Phnom Penh and sleep there. The sample dates below are 1–4 November on the island and 4–5 November in the capital. They give three island nights and a separate mainland night, with the flight on the following day.

From Phnom Penh to the actual Sihanoukville boarding point
When we checked on 15 October 2026, Giant Ibis’s booking results for 1 November 2026 listed the 07:45 AM Phnom Penh–Sihanoukville service at US$18 per seat. Its online payment calculation adds US$1 per passenger, giving a model cost of US$38 for two adults. Check your date and boarding details before paying.
That named Universe Luxury service was scheduled from 07:45 to 10:45 on 1 November, boarding on Road 106, Sangkat Doun Penh, Khan Doun Penh, and dropping at Phe Street, Sangkat 3, next to Sihanoukville Autonomous Port. The booking result shows a three-hour journey. Use a later boat rather than trying to make the 11:00 departure after a 10:45 bus arrival.
Book Giant Ibis directly on its website, choose your departure and seat, and check the fare for your date before paying.
GTVC’s booking results list Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, Gate 1, as the mainland boarding point for these departures. Follow the boarding address on your ticket; the company’s general contact page uses the name Tourism Pier.
The bus stop and boat boarding gate are separate instructions. Arrange the move from the bus drop-off to the ticketed ferry gate; a local transfer fare is additional. Starting this route in Phnom Penh the previous evening keeps the early bus practical.
GTVC tickets, return arrangements and the island last mile
For the Long Set base, choose GTVC: Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, Gate 1 → Long Set Pier. On 15 October 2026, its displayed services for 22 October left at 08:00, 11:00, 14:00 and 16:00, taking 50 minutes, with adult fares of US$17 one way or US$30 return. Use the 14:00 service as the outward connection after the named morning bus, booking the equivalent service for your actual travel date through GTVC’s website or Sihanoukville office. Those are October examples; check the times and fare for your own date when you book.
At Long Set Pier, head down the pier, turn right and pass through Pura Vita Resort to Mad Monkey. The property places itself 200 m from the pier. This direct arrival removes the need to route the bungalow stay through Koh Rong Community Pier.
For the reverse direction, GTVC’s Longset Beach search for 22 October named Heaven Beach (Koh Rong) as its boarding stop on Longset Beach, returning to Gate 1 at 08:45, 11:45, 14:45 and 16:45, with a 45-minute crossing and a US$17 adult one-way fare. Arrange the open-ticket return with GTVC staff, including the named beach boarding point; the model chooses the morning departure before the afternoon bus.
Other operators: Buva Sea is the other main operator on this coast. Book through its website, or contact it at support@buvasea.com or 097 8888 950 / 069 888 950; its office is on Port Gate 1 Road, Preah Sihanouk. This guide gives no Buva Sea fare, island stop or crossing time, and GTVC’s fares and times above do not apply to it. Ask which island pier its boat uses before you pick a room. For Sok San Beach Resort, the resort’s own boat lands at the hotel; book that service with the resort rather than treating a general Koh Rong ticket as its transfer.
Be at the pier 30 minutes before departure. GTVC includes one bag up to 20 kg. Return tickets are open-dated: arrange the return at its counter or pier. If bad weather prevents the departure, GTVC says it refunds the ticket. The GTVC fare listing shows no separate port charge; the budget below leaves out any charge added at checkout.

The mainland night and the onward flight
The model uses the 08:45 island return, leaving time on the mainland before the afternoon bus. On 15 October 2026, Giant Ibis’s booking result for 4 November listed a Universe Luxury departure from Sihanoukville at 13:30 and arrival in Phnom Penh at 16:30. It boarded at Phe Street, Sangkat 3, next to Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, and arrived on Road 106, Sangkat Doun Penh, Khan Doun Penh. The displayed seat price was US$18, with the same US$1 online service charge per passenger.
Sleep in Phnom Penh that evening. The sample private room is Mad Monkey’s Standard Double at 32 Oknha Pich Street (242), with one double bed, an ensuite bathroom and capacity for two. It is a party hostel, so choose another property if a quiet final night is a priority. The evening meal and next morning’s breakfast below are in the capital, after the island stay.
For the onward flight, book Royal Angkor Tours’ Phnom Penh city → Techo International Airport (KTI) private car through its transfer page. On 15 October 2026, its published one-way car price was US$35 plus a US$20 KTI surcharge, US$55 per car for 1–3 passengers. It includes hotel pickup, an air-conditioned vehicle, driver and bottled water; space is allowed for one large bag, a carry-on and a small bag per person. Free cancellation is offered until 48 hours before pickup. Give the operator your hotel, flight and departure details when booking. No operator or official page publishes the driving time from Phnom Penh to KTI, so ask the driver when to leave for your flight. The airport says it is approximately 20 km south of the city centre, and its official city-to-airport directions run Morodok Techo Flyover Bridge → Samdach Hun Sen Boulevard → Samdech Thipadie Hun Manet Flyover Bridge, then airport signs. The 20 km is the airport’s location, not a measured road distance.
Meals on the island and in the capital
Mad Monkey has its own beachfront restaurant and Long Set Resort has a restaurant, so the beach base can support eating near the room. Check current menus locally; the island meals have no prices in this model. For two meals that can be planned from published menus, use the Phnom Penh buffer: dinner at Khmer Surin after the return bus, then breakfast at Malis before leaving the city.
Khmer Surin’s menu lists Samlor Ka Koh and Bpro-Hok Gatee; Malis’s breakfast menu lists Khmer rice noodle soup and grilled pork rice. These are Cambodian dishes on the actual mainland part of this route. They are not claimed as island restaurant specialities. The food box gives the ingredients and meal pairing.

Budget for two adults: US$411.50 in listed costs
On 15 October 2026 the listed costs below come to US$411.50 for two adults on the 1–5 November route, in private double rooms at social hostels. Everything in that total has a published price. Everything else is listed once under “not included” at the end.
Island room, 1–4 November: Mad Monkey’s own rate for a Standard Double Bungalow on these dates was US$55.83 a night, US$167.50 for the three nights. The room sleeps two, with a double bed, air conditioning, towels, private bathroom and balcony. Use the US$167.50 stay total, not US$55.83 × 3. Breakfast and taxes are not included.
Mainland room, 4–5 November: Mad Monkey Phnom Penh’s own rate for a Standard Double on that night was US$31. It sleeps two and has an ensuite bathroom. Breakfast and taxes are not included. Mad Monkey lists free cancellation up to 24 hours before check-in for both rooms.
Transport: two GTVC adult returns cost 2 × US$30 = US$60. The outward bus costs 2 × (US$18 + US$1) = US$38, and the return bus the same, US$38. The Phnom Penh hotel–KTI private car costs US$35 + US$20 = US$55 for the two adults together.
Two mainland meals: one Samlor Ka Koh and one Bpro-Hok Gatee at Khmer Surin cost US$6 + US$6 = US$12; one Khmer rice noodle soup and one grilled pork rice at Malis cost US$5 + US$5 = US$10. Tax and service charge are not included.
Total: US$167.50 + US$31 + US$60 + US$38 + US$38 + US$55 + US$12 + US$10 = US$411.50.
Not included: all meals from departure in Phnom Penh on 1 November through lunch on 4 November, drinks and extra portions, island activities, local transfers between bus stops, piers, hotels and restaurants (including to the return beach boarding point), any port charge or tax added at checkout, flights, and a night in Phnom Penh before the early outward bus.
Practical questions
Is Koh Rong a day trip or an overnight stay?
Choose three nights for two full beach days. The ferry journey is only one part of arrival: reaching Sihanoukville and the correct island beach also takes time.
Which beach should I book?
This route uses Long Set Beach and a private Mad Monkey bungalow, arriving at Long Set Pier. Koh Touch suits a village-side stay with evening activity, while Sok San Beach Resort offers its own direct boat service and resort activities.
Does a Koh Rong ticket take me to Long Set Beach?
Choose GTVC’s Long Set Pier service for this room. From the pier, turn right and walk through Pura Vita Resort to Mad Monkey, which places itself 200 m away. Koh Rong Community Pier is a different landing.
Can I use an open return ticket on any boat?
Arrange the return date and available departure with GTVC staff at its counter or pier. An open-dated ticket still needs that return arrangement.
Can I fly on the day I leave the island?
Plan a mainland night before the flight. The sample returns to Phnom Penh, sleeps there and uses KTI the next day.
How much does the stay cost for two?
The listed costs for two adults total US$411.50: rooms, GTVC returns, both Giant Ibis buses, the KTI car and two mainland meals. Island meals, activities, local transfers, flights and any charge added at checkout are not included.
