Koh Rong Samloem: Saracen Bay, ferries and three nights
Koh Rong Samloem works best as a place to stop moving. The choice is between shores: a resort-lined bay, a village setting, or a more secluded beach. Choose the shore before the room, then match the room to the landing on your ferry ticket. This route gives Saracen Bay three nights and two full beach days, travelling through Sihanoukville from Phnom Penh and returning to the capital for a night before flying.

- Suggested time
- 3 island nights plus 1 mainland night
- Where to stay
- Saracen Bay on Koh Rong Samloem; Phnom Penh for the final mainland night
- Season and timing
- The World Bank and Asian Development Bank climate profile describes Cambodia’s dry season as November to April, with cooler weather particularly from November to January.
The short answer
Book three nights in Saracen Bay and one final night in Phnom Penh before flying from Techo International Airport. Reserve the room and its pier pickup first, then the ferry. On 15 October 2026, GTVC listed US$30 per adult return; Giant Ibis’s 1 November Phnom Penh–Sihanoukville result listed US$18 per seat plus US$1 online service charge. Saracen Bay is the simplest base for this GTVC route; Mpay Bay and Lazy Beach need a different arrival plan.
Choose the shore before choosing the room
Saracen Bay is the first-visit base in this plan. The Royal Embassy of Cambodia’s tourism feature describes it as the island’s main tourist beach, with several resorts lining its front. Choose it for a shore stay with accommodation along the bay, keeping the two full days here rather than trying to circle the island.
Mpay Bay, also written M’Pai Bay, is the village choice. The embassy recommends it for local culture. Beach House Cambodia places its own rooms on the village beachfront, in coconut shade with sea and sunrise views: choose this setting for a village stay and an early morning by the water. Its arrival directions name M’Pai Bay village pier, then a right turn and a 100-metre walk along the sand to the property. A ticket labelled Koh Rong Samloem does not by itself deliver you to this village.
Lazy Beach is the secluded alternative. ASEAN’s tourism guide describes white sand, snorkelling, hammocks and sunset from the pier at the beachside resort. It is a place for a book and a long afternoon by the water. Sunset Beach is another secluded choice named by the embassy. Both need accommodation and arrival arrangements of their own rather than being automatic stops on this Saracen Bay stay.
For the Saracen Bay room example, La Passion by Achariyak’s Standard Room is on the hillside, looking towards garden or rainforest. Its own page gives 35 sq m, a maximum of two guests and a king bed or two twins, with a standing shower and tea/coffee facilities. Book through the resort’s own website. La Passion’s pages show no room rate, so ask the resort for the price of 1–4 November, with breakfast and taxes, before you pay for the ferry. The room is not included in the budget below.
Three nights, with two days left for the beach
Three nights protect the middle of the stay. Arrival and departure involve a bus, a ferry and local connections, while the two complete days let you make a beach morning or a slow lunch the main event. The embassy describes natural rainforest and offshore coral reefs, but a simple shore stay does not depend on fitting in a boat excursion.
La Passion advertises its own paddleboarding, kayaking and snorkelling activities. Its paddleboard options include a two-hour or whole-day rental, and it describes snorkelling tours for different experience levels. The resort publishes no price for them, so they are not included in the budget below; ask what is included before adding one.
- 1 November: take the morning bus from Phnom Penh and target GTVC’s 14:00 departure. Meet the resort pickup at the ticketed island pier, settle into Saracen Bay and keep the evening free.
- 2 November: leave the day for the beach, a book and meals at the resort. Add an organised water activity only if conditions and the operator’s departure suit.
- 3 November: a second unhurried shore day. Arrange the return date and departure with GTVC staff while there is still time to choose.
- 4 November: use the 08:45 return as the planning target, then Giant Ibis’s 13:30 bus to Phnom Penh. Sleep in the capital; fly from KTI on 5 November or later.

From Phnom Penh to the actual Sihanoukville boarding point
When we checked on 15 October 2026, Giant Ibis’s booking results for 1 November 2026 listed the 07:45 AM Phnom Penh–Sihanoukville service at US$18 per seat. Its online payment calculation adds US$1 per passenger, giving a model cost of US$38 for two adults. Check your date and boarding details before paying.
That named Universe Luxury service was scheduled from 07:45 to 10:45 on 1 November, boarding on Road 106, Sangkat Doun Penh, Khan Doun Penh, and dropping at Phe Street, Sangkat 3, next to Sihanoukville Autonomous Port. This is the dated booking result’s three-hour schedule. Use a later boat rather than trying to make the 11:00 departure after a 10:45 bus arrival.
Book Giant Ibis directly on its website, choose your departure and seat, and check the fare for your date before paying.
GTVC’s booking results list Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, Gate 1, as the mainland boarding point for these departures. Follow the boarding address on your ticket; the company’s general contact page uses the name Tourism Pier.
The bus drop-off and the ferry boarding point are separate places. Arrange the short move between them yourself; its cost is not included in the budget below. Starting this route in Phnom Penh the previous evening keeps the early bus practical.
GTVC: exact piers, sailing times and pickup
On 15 October 2026, GTVC listed adult tickets at US$17 one way or US$30 return. Its Sihanoukville departures to Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloem were 08:00, 11:00, 14:00 and 16:00. The outward crossing was 45 minutes to Koh Rong and 30 minutes to Koh Rong Samloem. Return departures were 08:45, 11:45, 14:45 and 16:45, taking 40 minutes from Koh Rong and 30 minutes from Koh Rong Samloem.
Book through GTVC’s website or its Sihanoukville office. The selected Samloem service names Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, Gate 1 on the mainland and Koh Rong Samloem, Orchid Resort-GTVC on the island. Use those ticketed points when arranging the bus connection and resort pickup. The general Tourism Pier contact address is a separate listing, so follow the boarding details for your sailing.
La Passion’s published pickup procedure is to send your speedboat details when booking the accommodation; its front desk team then greets guests at the designated Saracen Bay pier and assists with the transfer to the resort. Its pages do not say whether this covers the Orchid Resort-GTVC landing named on the GTVC ticket, or what a transfer costs. Ask the resort to confirm both when you book. The pickup charge is not included in the budget below.
La Passion also names Buva Sea Cambodia as a way to reach the island. This plan uses GTVC, which sells through its website and its Sihanoukville office. Book Buva Sea through its website, or contact it at support@buvasea.com or 097 8888 950 / 069 888 950; its office is on Port Gate 1 Road, Preah Sihanouk. This guide gives no Buva Sea fare or crossing time, so ask which island pier its boat uses before you pick a room. For M’Pai Bay, Beach House Cambodia directs its guests to GTVC or BuvaSea and specifically to M’Pai Bay village pier; its beachfront property is 100 metres to the right along the sand. Book a service naming that landing. Lazy Beach’s own site describes jungle trails and snorkelling off its beach but publishes no starting pier, walking time or boat transfer; no operator or official page does either, so ask Lazy Beach how to arrive.
Be at the pier 30 minutes before departure. GTVC includes one bag up to 20 kg. Return tickets are open-dated: arrange the return at its counter or pier. If bad weather prevents the departure, GTVC says it refunds the ticket.

Return to Phnom Penh before the flight
This plan uses the 08:45 island return, leaving time on the mainland before the afternoon bus. On 15 October 2026, Giant Ibis’s booking result for 4 November listed a Universe Luxury departure from Sihanoukville at 13:30 and arrival in Phnom Penh at 16:30. It boarded at Phe Street, Sangkat 3, next to Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, and arrived on Road 106, Sangkat Doun Penh, Khan Doun Penh. The displayed seat price was US$18, with the same US$1 online service charge per passenger.
Sleep in Phnom Penh that evening. This plan uses Mad Monkey’s Standard Double at 32 Oknha Pich Street (242), with a double bed, ensuite bathroom and room for two. On 15 October 2026 the hostel’s own page listed it at US$31 a night for 4–5 November, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before check-in. Taxes and breakfast are not included in that figure. This is a party hostel; choose another room if a quiet night matters more than its social setting.
For the onward flight, book Royal Angkor Tours’ Phnom Penh hotel-to-KTI private car through its airport-transfer page or transfer enquiry. Checked on 15 October 2026, its published one-way car price for one to three passengers is US$35 plus the US$20 KTI surcharge: US$55 per car, including an air-conditioned vehicle, driver, bottled water and door-to-door service. It allows one large bag, a carry-on and a small bag per person. Cancellation is free until 48 hours before pickup. No operator or airport page publishes a drive time from the city to KTI, so allow generous time when you set the pickup. KTI’s own transport page places the airport about 20 kilometres south of the city centre and gives the road from the city as Morodok Techo Flyover Bridge, Samdach Hun Sen Boulevard and Samdech Thipadie Hun Manet Flyover Bridge, then airport signs.
Island meals and a Khmer dinner on the mainland
La Passion’s Fishermen Restaurant advertises seafood sourced daily, including from fishermen in Saracen Bay. It serves breakfast from 06:30 to 10:00. Plan island meals around the accommodation; the resort publishes no menu prices here, so island meals are not included in the budget below.
After the return bus, make the Phnom Penh buffer night part of the holiday. Khmer Surin on Street 57 lists Samlor Ka Koh and Bpro-Hok Gatee: a soup and a vegetable-accompanied pork dish that work as two shared dinner choices. The following morning, Malis Phnom Penh’s breakfast menu offers Khmer rice noodle soup and grilled pork with rice.
The four dishes below belong to that mainland stop. They give you a proper Khmer dinner and breakfast on the route rather than requiring a detour during the island stay.

Budget for two adults: what is priced and what is not
For two adults sharing private rooms, this plan follows 1–4 November on Samloem and 4–5 November in Phnom Penh, checked on 15 October 2026. Everything priced below comes from the operator’s or venue’s own published price. The total of those items is US$244, including a private car from the Phnom Penh hotel to KTI. The island room and the other items listed under “Not included” have no published price we could use, so US$244 is not the whole cost of the trip.
Each amount is the price shown on the operator’s or venue’s own page; the Phnom Penh room and the restaurant lines are one-night and one-meal prices.
- Mainland night: Mad Monkey Phnom Penh Standard Double, room for two, 4–5 November: US$31 for the room.
- Buses: two adults × (US$18 fare + US$1 online charge) × two directions = US$76.
- Ferry: two adult GTVC returns × US$30 = US$60.
- Buffer-night dinner: one Samlor Ka Koh and one Bpro-Hok Gatee at Khmer Surin, $6 each = $12.
- Departure breakfast: one Khmer rice noodle soup and one Bay Sach Chrouk Ang at Malis, $5 each = $10.
- KTI departure: one Royal Angkor Tours private car for two adults, US$35 plus the US$20 KTI surcharge = US$55.
- Arithmetic: 31 + 76 + 60 + 12 + 10 + 55 = US$244.
- Not included: the three island nights at La Passion; island meals from 1 November through lunch on 4 November; the island pickup; the move between the Sihanoukville bus drop-off and the ferry; drinks; optional activities; taxes and breakfast at Mad Monkey; flights; and any Phnom Penh stay before the early outbound bus.
Practical questions
How many nights should I book on Koh Rong Samloem?
Book three nights for two complete shore days, plus one mainland night before flying. This route uses Saracen Bay and returns to Phnom Penh.
Should I stay in Saracen Bay, Mpay Bay or Lazy Beach?
Saracen Bay is the resort-lined base in this plan. Mpay Bay suits a village stay; Lazy Beach suits a more secluded beach stay. Match the chosen accommodation to its own arrival route.
Where does the GTVC boat land?
The selected Samloem service names Orchid Resort-GTVC. It departs from Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, Gate 1. Give the exact island stop to the resort when arranging pickup.
How does the return ticket work?
GTVC’s US$30 adult return is open-dated. Arrange the return date and available departure with staff at the counter or pier before leaving the island.
Can I fly on the day I leave the island?
Keep a mainland night between the boat and the flight. The sample leaves Samloem on 4 November, sleeps in Phnom Penh and flies from KTI on 5 November or later.
What does this trip cost for two?
The priced items add up to US$244: the two bus returns, the two ferry returns, the mainland room, one dinner, one breakfast and the private car from the hotel to KTI. Not included: the three island nights, island meals, the island pickup, the move between bus drop-off and ferry, drinks, activities, taxes and breakfast at the mainland hotel, and flights.
