Kep travel guide: two nights for crab, beach and forest
Kep is a small seaside stay built around seafood, a crescent of beach and forest on the hill behind it. The Crab Market is the reason to linger over lunch; the national park gives the next morning a different shape. Choose a room near the coast if you want meals and the sea to organise your days, or a hillside room if time at the hotel matters more. Two nights let you settle in without making every outing part of a transfer day.

- Suggested time
- 2 nights in Kep
- Where to stay
- Crab Market and Kep Beach for the coast; the hillside for a hotel-centred stay
- Season and timing
- The World Bank and Asian Development Bank climate profile describes Cambodia’s dry season as November to April, with cooler weather particularly from November to January.
The short answer
Book two nights in Kep, near the Crab Market or Kep Beach, for a mainland seafood-and-walking break. Choose the hotel base first, then reserve the Phnom Penh bus. Summer Resort Kep’s Comfort Double Room is listed from US$45 a night on its own site, and the Giant Ibis bus on 1 November 2026 is US$15 per seat plus US$1 per passenger online. Two adults spending two nights come to US$238.80 with those fares, meals and the park admission; hotel taxes, breakfast and local rides are not included. Give the arrival afternoon to the market and beach, and the next morning to a permitted marked park walk. Keep Koh Tonsay outside this short plan until you have a boat booking.
Choose the coast or the hillside for both nights
Stay near the Crab Market if the trip is mainly about seafood meals. Cambodia’s honorary consulate describes the market’s oceanfront dining shacks and places Kep Beach about a kilometre away. The beach intersection is the alternative for a stay centred on the sand and nearby restaurants. Keep the same room for both nights; moving hotels adds little to a visit this short.
The hillside east of Road 33A has bungalows and hotels set among vegetation. That suits a quiet afternoon at the property, but build the ride to dinner into your choice. The town’s market area is another lodging cluster; choose it for a specific property rather than expecting every meal to be on the seafront.
For a concrete room, Summer Resort Kep lists a Comfort Double Room with one double bed, space for two guests, air conditioning, a shower and a balcony. Its own page showed the room from US$45 a night on 15 October 2026; it does not say whether taxes or breakfast are included, so the budget below counts neither. Its address is Thmey village, Prey Thom commune.
Crab Market lunch and the beach crescent
Kampot pepper crab is the meal to build around. The consulate’s Kep guide describes fresh crab fried with Kampot pepper as the local speciality and the Crab Market as a line of oceanfront seafood places. Make this an unhurried lunch or early dinner rather than a hurried stop between transport bookings. Choose the crab and its preparation, and agree the portion price before it is cooked.
Kep Beach curves round the peninsula’s tip, with rocks at either end and a road behind the sand. Dining platforms and seafood vendors are part of the scene. It works as an afternoon beside the sea after the market; this is a compact mainland beach break rather than a reason to move to an island.
Keep the old villas as background to the town rather than a route into abandoned buildings. The consulate describes seaside and hillside villas built from the 1930s to the 1960s, many left deteriorating after the war years. A room, a seafood meal and the coast give the visit enough structure without adding ruin exploration.

A forest morning, with the island left optional
Kep National Park sits above the beach. ASEAN’s tourism guide describes a walking loop past pagodas and viewpoints. The Cambodian consulate describes the main circuit as an approximately 8 km service road around Kep Mountain, gently sloping but narrow or overgrown in places. It offers a change from the waterfront: forest, hillside temples and openings towards the coast.
The consulate identifies the hillside road beside Veranda Resort as an approach to the trail. The consulate’s guide lists US$1 admission when the ranger is present; carry US$1 per adult. Start with the service-road circuit beside Veranda, keeping to the open main road rather than taking the summit side paths; the ranger decides which route is open that day. Germany’s country advice warns that mines remain in some areas outside cities, especially near the Thai and Vietnamese borders; as a national precaution, stay on open, marked paths and follow ranger directions. Choose an early walk, carry water and turn back if conditions do not suit your party. The beach and a longer lunch make an easy replacement.
Koh Tonsay, also called Rabbit Island, offers a different kind of coast day: palm-backed beaches, rustic bungalows and beach-shack restaurants, as described by the Cambodian consulate. Choose it for an island beach stay rather than the mainland’s forest walk and restaurant choice. It remains outside this two-night plan: arrange the named operator, total return fare and return sailing at the pier before replacing a mainland day with it. Leave the departure day for your road journey.
How to spend the arrival day and the full day
The morning Phnom Penh bus example reaches Kep around lunchtime, leaving the afternoon for the coast. A later arrival makes dinner the main event; the full day still gives you the park and beach without rushing. These are suggested sequences rather than fixed opening times.
- Day 1: arrive, transfer from the bus stop to your hotel and leave your bags. Have lunch, then visit the Crab Market and Kep Beach. Stay in Kep for the first night.
- Day 2: breakfast at Deli’s Kep by the pier, followed by the permitted park walk if conditions allow. Return for lunch and an afternoon by the sea or at the hotel. Make the second dinner a Khmer meal at Chankiri on Road 33A. Stay in the same room.
- Day 3: breakfast, check out and transfer to the Giant Ibis stop for the named 13:00 return to Phnom Penh below. Keep this day free of an island trip before onward travel.
A local table at the pier and on Road 33A
Deli’s Kep places its bakery and restaurant at Kep pier, making it a useful breakfast or lunch stop on a waterfront day. Chankiri Kitchen & Bar is at Samanea Beach Resort on Road 33A; make its dinner part of your planned transport rather than treating it as a restaurant at the Crab Market.
Prices read on 15 October 2026 give two different meal styles. Deli’s menu lists the pork-and-rice breakfast and fish amok below. Chankiri’s September 2025 menu lists pepper crab and Kor Ko, with a 10% service charge; regular Khmer dishes include steamed rice except fried rice, noodles and Kor Ko, which comes with noodles or bread. The budget uses regular portions.

What to eat and where to look

Crab fried with Kampot pepper
Chankiri’s Khmer menu offers crab stir-fried with Kampot pepper and vegetables, with steamed rice for the regular dish.
- Where to look
- Chankiri Kitchen & Bar, Samanea Beach Resort, Kep Road 33A.
- Fit it into your day
- US$17 before the menu’s 10% service charge; make this a dinner with a second dish.
Mention food allergies before ordering; seafood, fish sauce and other ingredients can occur across Khmer dishes.
Kor Ko
Chankiri describes its version as a traditional Cambodian beef stew served with noodles or bread.
- Where to look
- Chankiri Kitchen & Bar on Road 33A.
- Fit it into your day
- US$7 before the 10% service charge; the second main in the two-person dinner model.
Bai sach chrouk
Deli’s Kep marinates pork in fish sauce, palm sugar and honey, grills it and serves it with rice and a fried egg.
- Where to look
- Deli’s Kep at Kep pier.
- Fit it into your day
- US$2.50 on the own menu; breakfast before the forest walk.
Fish amok
Traditionally, fish amok is a fragrant coconut fish curry with lemongrass, galangal and turmeric, steamed in a banana-leaf parcel or young coconut shell. The coconut cream gives it a rich sauce. Deli’s Kep lists fish amok on its own menu.
- Where to look
- Deli’s Kep at Kep pier.
- Fit it into your day
- US$5 on the own menu; a lunch after the morning outing.
Arriving by road from Phnom Penh or Kampot
When we checked on 15 October 2026, Giant Ibis’s booking results for 1 November 2026 listed the 08:00 AM Phnom Penh–Kep service at US$15 per seat. Its online payment calculation adds US$1 per passenger, giving a model cost of US$32 for two adults. Check your date and boarding details before paying.
For that named service, the booking result gives departure from Road 106, Sangkat Doun Penh, Khan Doun Penh, at 08:00 and arrival at 12:10 at Ponleu Chne Trachak Chet Kep Ville: Phum Thmey, Prey Thum. That is a scheduled 4 hours 10 minutes. Arrange the final ride from this drop-off to your hotel; it is not a promised beach or hotel drop-off.
Book Giant Ibis directly on its website, choose your departure and seat, and check the fare for your date before paying.
Back to Phnom Penh: Giant Ibis’s results for 3 November 2026, read on 15 October, list a 13:00 departure from Ponleu Chne Trachak Chet Kep Ville, Phum Thmey, Prey Thum, arriving at Road 106, Sangkat Doun Penh, Khan Doun Penh, at 17:10. The fare is US$15 per seat plus the US$1 online service charge, or US$32 for two adults. Reserve the return through the same direct booking channel and arrange the hotel-to-stop ride separately.
From Kampot, Cambodia Tour Taxi advertises a private transfer from your accommodation to your Kep hotel, taking 1–2 hours. Its own route tariff lists US$25 per four-seat Comfort SUV for the group, with fuel, standard road tolls and bottled water included. This is the Kampot-to-Kep direction; attraction fees, meals, extended waiting and extra detours are excluded. Its website booking form takes the date, pick-up and drop-off, passenger count and luggage. If you are staying at Samanea Beach Resort, its own transfer brochure lists a four-seat Standard Car between Kampot and the resort at US$35 per vehicle each way, including fuel, parking, tolls and standard service fees. Book that service through the resort reception and pay before departure unless agreed otherwise. These are separate services, not a through Giant Ibis fare.
For local rides, Samanea’s brochure lists a Standard Car day trip in and around Kep/Kampot at US$90 per vehicle, booked through its reception. Its tuk-tuk table lists the Crab Market, main beach and national-park entrance at US$3 without saying whether that is per tuk-tuk or per person. No operator publishes a fare for the ride between the Kep bus stop, Summer Resort Kep and the pier restaurants, so these rides are not included in the budget.
The air gateway is Techo International Airport (KTI). Its transportation page lists official taxis and Grab, WowNow and PassApp to Phnom Penh, with an approximate US$10–20 fare depending on the city drop-off, checked on 15 October 2026. Use a city stay before the morning Kep bus if your flight timing needs it; the airport fare does not buy a direct ride to Kep.
On 15 October 2026, the UK FCDO advised against all but essential travel within 20 km of Cambodia’s land border with Thailand; Germany warned against travel within 20 km, and France formally advised against travel within 30 km on the Cambodian side. France’s Thailand advice uses 50 km on the Thai side. Our routes keep at least 50 km from the border and use flights from Bangkok; the land crossings are closed. Check your own government’s advice before booking.
