Siem Reap travel guide: four nights beyond the temple rush

Siem Reap works best when the temples are the centre of a stay rather than its entire timetable. Angkor Wat’s galleries, Bayon’s stone faces and Ta Prohm’s tree-bound ruins take you outside town; the river, Old Market and Angkor National Museum give the days between them a different pace. Four nights leave room for an early temple start, a museum visit and meals that need more attention than a breakfast box in a van.

Season and timing
The World Bank and Asian Development Bank climate profile describes Cambodia’s dry season as November to April, with cooler weather particularly from November to January.

The short answer

Stay four nights in central Siem Reap, around the Old Market or Wat Bo. Book your room and temple transport first, then buy the Angkor pass on the official website. On 15 October 2026, a one-day pass cost US$37 per adult and the airport shuttle cost US$8 each way. The four-night model for two adults comes to US$909.91 before museum admission and the other items listed as not included. Use one guided day for Angkor Wat, Bayon and Ta Prohm, with the other days for town and the museum; choose a longer pass if you want slower, separate temple visits.

Choose a town base for all four nights

Keep one room for the whole stay. The Old Market area makes the market and riverside natural bookends to the day. Wat Bo, on the other side of the river, is another town base to compare if you want to return to the centre for dinner. Look at the precise street and room position before choosing: a room beside an evening venue and one on a residential lane offer different nights.

The museum and Charles de Gaulle Road area is an alternative if the temples matter more to you than walking back from the market. Staying on the temple side of town still means arranging transport to Angkor; changing hotels during a short visit adds little.

The room model below uses an Executive Suite at Tara Angkor Hotel for 16–20 November 2026. This is a suite-tier hotel example, so compare its setting and price with the guesthouses and hostels in these areas.

A five-day rhythm, without moving hotels

This suggested sequence gives the early temple day its own space. It assumes arrival in time for lunch on day 1 and departure after breakfast on day 5; shift the town walks around your flight.

  • Day 1: arrive at SAI, take the booked airport car to Tara Angkor Hotel, leave your luggage and have lunch. Walk through the Old Market area and beside the river, then have a Khmer dinner. Night 1 in Siem Reap.
  • Day 2: take Mad Monkey’s sunrise temple tour for Angkor Wat, Bayon and Ta Prohm. Return to town for lunch and an unhurried afternoon. Night 2 in the same room.
  • Day 3: take a late breakfast, return to the river at your own pace and browse the small galleries and boutiques around Alley West. Keep the afternoon free before dinner. Night 3 in Siem Reap.
  • Day 4: have breakfast at the hotel, then make the Angkor National Museum your main visit, using its galleries to revisit the beliefs and images you saw at the temples. Return to your room for an afternoon rest and go to HAVEN for dinner. If you prefer another temple day, choose the longer pass and arrange that extra transport when booking. Night 4 in Siem Reap.

Angkor Wat, Bayon and Ta Prohm: choose the pace first

Angkor Wat is worth more than the silhouette at sunrise. Its moat, raised galleries and central towers give the building its shape; the bas-reliefs and figures on the walls reward a slower look after the first photographs. Bayon, at the centre of Angkor Thom, changes the scale: smiling stone faces rise above the terraces, while its reliefs mix mythological, historical and everyday scenes. Ta Prohm supplies the contrast of trees and masonry, with roots wrapped around the ruins. Follow the visitor route through the site rather than treating the ruins as a climbing ground.

On 15 October 2026, Angkor Enterprise listed an Angkor pass at US$37 for one day, US$62 for three visiting days with expiry in seven days, or US$72 for seven visiting days with expiry in 30 days.

For the guided circuit in this plan, the one-day pass is enough. A three-day pass makes sense if you want Angkor Wat on one day and Bayon and Ta Prohm on another, or room to return; read our Angkor guide before deciding which temples to add.

Buy your Angkor pass on Angkor Enterprise’s official website, select the pass and visit date, enter the quantity and nationality, and pay by credit or debit card or KHQR. Save the emailed e-ticket; digital and printed copies are accepted at entry.

On 15 October 2026, Angkor Enterprise listed Angkor Wat at 05:00–17:30 and Bayon at 07:30–17:30. We found no official page that publishes opening hours for Ta Prohm, the third temple on the tour, so ask your guide for its closing time on the day.

Mad Monkey’s own Sunrise Angkor Wat Temple Tour visits all three main temples, with a guide, water and air-conditioned transport. Its published options on 15 October 2026 were US$15 per person for the tour only or US$18 with lunch and a drink on return; a breakfast box costs an additional US$6. It runs daily, leaves the Mad Monkey Siem Reap lobby at 04:15 and schedules departure back to the hostel at 12:00. Book through the operator’s tour page and choose your date and meal option; the park pass is separate. The model below uses the tour-only price, with meals counted separately.

Cover your shoulders and knees at sacred sites, follow restricted-area signs, and keep off loose stones and fragile structures. Do not touch carvings, remove objects, smoke or litter. Ask before photographing monks, and do not give money or sweets to children.

Take drinking water and use the afternoon back in town for rest. A second temple day is not included in the budget.

The Old Market, the river and the museum

Start at Old Market (Phsar Chas), the downtown traditional market for local items and souvenirs. The Honorary Consulate of Cambodia’s town guide also points to Cambodian food stalls along Street 9 and small contemporary galleries and boutiques in the nearby Pub Street alleys, especially Alley West. Browse the market on arrival, then walk towards the covered bridge over the Siem Reap River; save the museum and a longer sit-down meal for the later town day.

Angkor National Museum gives context to the stone buildings outside town. Its galleries cover Khmer civilisation, religious beliefs, Khmer kings, Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom and ancient costume, alongside the Gallery of 1,000 Buddha Images. Put it before the temples if you prefer the background first, or afterwards to connect objects and beliefs with what you have just seen.

On 15 October 2026, the museum’s seasonal operating table listed 08:30–18:00 from April to September and 08:30–18:30 from October to March. Its FAQ says it opens daily and suggests 1–2 hours for a visit. Arriving before 18:00 avoids the difference between that seasonal table and the FAQ’s general closing time. The museum’s website does not publish an adult admission price, so admission is not included in the budget; buy it at the museum. Its services page lists an English audio guide at US$5 per set, which is optional.

Tonle Sap is a different landscape, with a lake, freshwater swamps and seasonally flooded fields and grasslands. UNESCO describes its expansion during rainfall, which is why a photograph of floating buildings does not tell you what a particular boat trip will reach on your date. This plan keeps the lake optional and leaves boat trips out of the budget; ask the operator for the departure point, route and full fare before replacing the town day with a boat outing.

Arrive at SAI and use the town shuttle

For Siem Reap, use Siem Reap Angkor International Airport (SAI). Book the Bangkok–Siem Reap leg by air.

On 15 October 2026, Siem Reap Airport Bus listed US$8 each way between Siem Reap Angkor International Airport and its town stop on 7 Makara Road in front of ACE School. The airport counter is on the left after leaving arrivals. Book on the operator’s website.

The timetable read on the same date listed airport-to-town departures at 09:30, 11:00, 12:30, 15:00, 16:00, 17:00, 17:30, 19:00, 20:00 and 22:00. Town-to-airport buses left at 05:30, 07:00, 08:00, 10:00, 12:00, 13:30, 15:00, 16:00, 17:30 and 19:00. The airport operator places SAI about 50 km from Siem Reap town. No operator or official page publishes the bus journey time. Treat this as a substantial road transfer: choose the bus around your airline’s check-in deadline and leave room for traffic, rather than fitting another visit before the flight.

The cheaper alternative is Siem Reap Airport Bus to its stop on 7 Makara Road in front of ACE School. The ride between that stop and Tara Angkor Hotel is not included in the budget. The operator offers free drop-off at the stop for hotels within 2 km and lists a US$2 return pickup without saying whether that is per person or per booking, so the pickup is not included either.

From Bangkok, book a flight to SAI. On 15 October 2026, the UK FCDO advised against all but essential travel within 20 km of Cambodia’s land border with Thailand; Germany warned against travel within 20 km, and France formally advised against travel within 30 km on the Cambodian side. The land crossings are closed. Check your own government’s advice before booking.

Make room for Khmer breakfasts and dinners

Use the town days to try dishes that are easy to miss on a temple-only visit. SPOONS’ breakfast menu supplies num banh chok; its main menu adds beef saraman. HAVEN’s menu offers Khmer amok and somlor m’chou kroeung. These are four different meals to build into the stay, rather than four variations of one curry.

Prices read on 15 October 2026 were US$3.50 for SPOONS Num Banh Chok and US$8.99 for its Beef Saraman; at HAVEN, Khmer Amok was US$7.50 and Somlor M’chou Kroeung US$6.75. HAVEN includes 10% VAT and adds no service charge. SPOONS’ menus do not state tax or service treatment.

Tell the restaurant about allergies before ordering: the cited dishes include fish, coconut, cashew nuts or other ingredients that vary by plate. On the sunrise day, arrange the tour’s breakfast box the day before rather than planning on a town breakfast before departure.

A four-night model for two adults

For two adults sharing one Executive Suite at Tara Angkor Hotel from 16 to 20 November 2026, the published-price subtotal checked on 15 October is US$909.91, before museum admission and the other items listed as not included. It follows the single temple-day plan and all four nights, with hotel breakfasts on days 3–5, breakfast boxes for the early tour and lunch and dinner on days 1–4. This is a suite-tier example throughout.

The hotel’s direct booking page offered the four-night, two-adult Executive Suite at US$579.15 with daily buffet breakfast for two and all taxes and service charges included, using its publicly advertised Tara123 promotion. The promotion’s booking window ends on 31 October 2026 and its stay window on 30 April 2027. The 57 sq m suite is a different room tier from a hostel private room. It requires a credit-card guarantee; cancellation is free until three days before arrival, then the full stay is charged. Amendments less than seven days before arrival carry a one-night penalty.

  • Room: US$579.15 for the actual four-night, two-adult Executive Suite offer, including breakfast, tax and service. Book through Tara Angkor Hotel’s own website, select these dates and two adults, then choose Executive Suite – Room with Breakfast and the public Tara123 promotion.
  • Airport car: US$85 for Royal Angkor Tours’ return SAI–hotel car for 1–3 people, including both adults together. It includes driver, air-conditioned vehicle, bottled water and arrival welcome. Select Siem Reap, 1–3 people, car and round trip on the operator’s transfer page; give the flights and Tara Angkor Hotel. Free cancellation is available until 48 hours before pickup.
  • Temples: US$104 = two one-day Angkor passes at US$37 + two tour-only places at Mad Monkey’s published US$15 tariff. Check the price for your date when you book.
  • Breakfast boxes: US$12 = two US$6 boxes for the early day-2 tour, ordered the day before. Hotel breakfast runs 06:00–10:00, after the tour departs; the other mornings use the included hotel breakfast.
  • Eight lunches and dinners for two: US$129.76 = four HAVEN meals of one Khmer Amok and one Khmer Lok Lak, US$7.50 + US$8 = US$15.50 each; plus four SPOONS meals of one Beef Saraman and one Turk Kroeung, US$8.99 + US$7.95 = US$16.94 each. These are menu-price examples for the meal slots; change the dishes and restaurant visits as you wish.
  • Arithmetic: US$579.15 + US$85 + US$104 + US$12 + US$129.76 = US$909.91. HAVEN’s prices include VAT and no service charge; SPOONS’ tax and service basis is not stated.
  • Not included: flights to and from SAI, any visa, museum admission and the optional US$5 audio guide, rides between town stops and your hotel including the Mad Monkey meeting point, drinks and snacks, any SPOONS tax or service charge, tips, insurance, a second temple day and any lake trip.

Practical questions

How many nights should I spend in Siem Reap?

Four nights give you a temple day, a museum visit and town time, with arrival and departure on separate days. Keep the same room throughout.

Is one day enough for Angkor?

One guided day can include Angkor Wat, Bayon and Ta Prohm. Choose the three-day pass if you want separate temple days and a slower pace; our Angkor guide explains the wider choices.

Should I stay beside the temples or in town?

For this four-night stay, choose the Old Market area or Wat Bo for town evenings. The museum and Charles de Gaulle Road area is another base to compare if temple access matters more than returning on foot from the market.

What should I do on a day away from the temples?

Visit Angkor National Museum, browse the Old Market and walk beside the river. Leave time for a Khmer breakfast and dinner rather than filling every gap with another outing.

Does this plan include a Tonle Sap boat trip?

No. The lake is optional; the main plan uses the town day and museum. Arrange a named operator and a route suited to your date before substituting a lake outing.

Is the budget an all-in price for two?

No. The US$909.91 model covers the four-night suite, the airport car, a one-day pass and tour for each adult, and the listed meals. Museum admission, rides between town stops and your hotel, flights and the other items listed as not included are separate.
