Sun Moon Lake in two nights: where to stay and what to choose
Sun Moon Lake offers several different visits within the same shoreline: the architecture and cycle path around Xiangshan, the shops and food of Ita Thau, and the hillside setting of Wenwu Temple. Two nights give those places breathing room. The useful choice is which part of the lake you want to experience, rather than how many circuits, crossings and viewpoints can fit into one day.

- Suggested time
- 2 nights, with an arrival-day lakeside walk and a full day of selected outings
- Where to stay
- Shuishe for the main bus arrival; Ita Thau for lakeside village accommodation
- Season and timing
- Choose the day’s cycling, boat and walking plans around the current lake forecast. Construction, maintenance and weather can affect access, so keep a village meal and visitor-centre stop as flexible alternatives.
The short answer
Stay two nights in Shuishe or Ita Thau, spending arrival day by the water and the full day between Xiangshan, village food and one temple or boat outing. Shuishe suits the main bus arrival, while Ita Thau offers a village-and-lakeside base. Choose a cycling section to match your ability, keeping boats dependent on conditions and current services. Shuishe Mountain Trail is temporarily closed in the official notice checked on 2026-10-08, so it is excluded from this plan.
Choose Shuishe or Ita Thau and keep one lake base
Shuishe’s shopping area has hotels and shops near the main arrival side of the lake. Staying here suits travellers coming by the Sun Moon Lake tourist shuttle, with an arrival-day walk and dinner before the fuller outing. Compare the actual lodging address with the bus stop and waterfront instead of assuming every lake-view property is equally convenient.
Ita Thau is the alternative for a stay centred on its lakeside shops, restaurants and accommodation. It is also a living Thau community, rather than a theme village laid out only for visitors. Two nights in either area avoids shifting luggage around the lake; bus or boat connections can then support the visits you choose, provided their current operation fits the day.
Give Xiangshan a chosen cycle section, rather than a compulsory circuit
Xiangshan Visitor Center brings distinctive concrete architecture and broad canopies to the lakeshore. The official cycling guide describes the section between Shuishe and Xiangshan as a three-kilometre route, including a waterfront stretch built over the water. That creates a manageable focus for a cycling outing without turning a visit into a promise to ride the entire lake.
Rental arrangements, current access and your comfort on a bicycle should decide how much to attempt. The authority lists accessible facilities on this section, but that does not make every shoreline path or complete-lake route equivalent. A visitor-centre visit and a selected walk can serve the same part of the day when cycling is not the right choice.

Make time for the local food
What to eat and where to look
Yuchi black tea
The official specialty guide highlights locally grown black tea, including TTES18 Hong Yu, or Red Jade, with a cinnamon-and-mint aroma.
- Where to look
- Tea shops around the lake, asking which Yuchi tea is actually being served.
- Fit it into your day
- Use a cup of tea as a pause during the village or lakeside part of the day.
Check the preparation and any milk or sweetener; do not assume every drink uses the same leaf or recipe.
Yuchi mushrooms
Locally grown Chinese mushrooms are one of the foods named in the scenic area’s specialty guide.
- Where to look
- Restaurants offering a mushroom dish; check the menu and how the mushrooms are cooked.
- Fit it into your day
- Choose a dish as part of a proper meal rather than treating packaged mushrooms as a ready-to-eat snack.
Ask about stock, sauces and other ingredients; a mushroom dish is not automatically vegetarian.
Black-tea egg rolls
The authority describes crispy egg rolls made with Assam black tea and milk, sold near Shuishe Pier.
- Where to look
- Specialty shops around Shuishe Pier.
- Fit it into your day
- Share them after a walk or take a pack back to the hotel.
The cited product includes milk; ask about eggs and other bakery allergens and follow the maker’s storage advice.
Let Ita Thau food and one temple or boat outing share the day
Ita Thau’s lake setting gives a food stop a reason to become more than a quick purchase beside the pier. The area’s official specialty guide highlights Yuchi black tea, mushrooms and black-tea egg rolls. Take time for the village itself, treating shops and cultural encounters as part of a living community and asking before photographing people or a performance.
Wenwu Temple occupies a hillside on the northern shore, with an architectural and religious character separate from the waterfront shops. The official attraction pages identify the round-lake bus as a connection to both the temple and Ita Thau. A boat can be another way to experience the lake when operating conditions permit, but it should be a chosen outing rather than an assumed link in every version of the day.

Respect the closed mountain trail and check the route you actually choose
The Sun Moon Lake authority’s notice says Shuishe Mountain Trail is temporarily closed because of severe damage from natural disasters. It was published on 2026-01-13 and updated on 2026-09-14; this guide checked it on 2026-10-08. The mountain trail is excluded here, even though older attraction descriptions may still mention its entrance near Ita Thau.
That closure is a reason to check the exact path, not to assume every lakeside walk or cycling section is closed. The authority posts separate construction and maintenance notices for different areas. Before setting out, compare your planned segment with those notices and the weather, then choose a visitor-centre stop, village meal or shorter walk if the original route is unsuitable.

Arrive through Taichung and leave room for the final connection
The scenic-area authority lists the Sun Moon Lake tourist shuttle from Taichung’s conventional railway and high-speed-rail stations. It also lists an airport service through THSR Taichung, with a separate airport-bus-and-shuttle alternative. Current departures and the exact arrival stop should decide the route, especially when the onward connection is the last part of a longer travel day.
For a Taoyuan Airport arrival, the same authority describes Airport MRT to THSR Taoyuan, high-speed rail to Taichung, and the Sun Moon Lake shuttle from the bus terminal there. This is a sequence of transfers, not a direct airport ride to the lakeshore. Keeping the arrival day for checking in, a meal and the water leaves the following day free for the visits that brought you here.
Practical questions
Should I stay in Shuishe or Ita Thau?
Shuishe suits the main tourist-shuttle arrival and its nearby shops and accommodation. Ita Thau suits a stay centred on the lakeside village. Choose one base for both nights and compare the exact address with your arrival and outing connections.
Do I need to cycle all the way around Sun Moon Lake?
No. A selected section between Shuishe and Xiangshan can be the focus of the outing. Check rental arrangements, access and your ability rather than assuming the complete lake route has the same terrain or facilities.
Can I get to Sun Moon Lake without a car?
Yes. The scenic-area authority lists tourist shuttles from Taichung TRA and THSR stations, as well as an airport route and an airport-bus transfer option. Check current departures and the stop for your actual lodging.
Is Shuishe Mountain Trail open?
The official notice checked on 2026-10-08 says it is temporarily closed because of severe natural-disaster damage. This plan excludes that mountain trail. Check separate notices for any lakeside path you intend to use.
