Cingjing guide: farm walks, mountain views and where to stay
Cingjing is a hillside district along the road above Wushe, rather than a compact village square. Sheep graze against a backdrop of mountain ridges, paths dip towards gardens and forest, and the road continues into much higher country at Hehuanshan. The pleasure comes from staying long enough to separate these experiences: a farm walk in daylight, a properly arranged dinner and another morning before the onward journey.

- Suggested time
- 2 days with 1 confirmed Cingjing night; a focused farm day trip is an alternative
- Where to stay
- Qingjing Farm Guomin Hotel for the lower garden area; separately confirmed hillside accommodation for the farm
- Season and timing
- Mountain views depend on cloud and fog. Pack for cooler conditions and check forecasts; animal demonstrations may be cancelled in severe weather.
The short answer
Spend two days with one night in Cingjing: explore the Green Green Grasslands first, then the Small Swiss Garden and a nearby walking trail. A confirmed room at Qingjing Farm's Guomin Hotel gives the visit a practical lower-area base; other hillside accommodation needs its own transport check. Keep Hehuanshan for a separate weather-dependent outing rather than treating it as another farm stop. Meals, animal demonstrations and the journey back should fit the actual bookings and current operating arrangements.
Let the booked room set the shape of the visit
The official farm hotel sits at Dingyuan New Residential Quarter, while the Green Green Grasslands occupy a different part of the hillside. A reservation should therefore settle more than the bed: ask where you will arrive, how you will reach the farm and whether dinner is available. Walking between every attraction is not the same as walking around one level park.
With one night arranged, the first day can concentrate on the grasslands and a meal, leaving the garden or a nearby trail for the next morning. If you are returning to Taichung the same day, the bus timetable becomes the frame for the visit. A shorter, coherent outing leaves more room for the view than a list that depends on perfect connections.
Follow the farm paths at your own pace
The Green Green Grasslands are the familiar Cingjing scene: open pasture, sheep and the mountains beyond. The official farm also describes the Guanshan pasture area and a choice of walking trails. Choose a signed route for the conditions and your ability; the 487-Steps Trail announces its character in its name, so this is not a blanket promise of step-free access.
Sheep-shearing and horse-riding demonstrations are part of the farm programme, but the official FAQ says severe weather can cancel performances. Check the day's arrangements before organising the whole visit around a show. The landscape and a manageable walk make a more reliable centre to the day than a timetable copied from an old itinerary.

Make time for the local food
What to eat and where to look
Lamb-noodle set
The official Guomin Hotel Chinese-restaurant menu shows a Qingjing lamb-noodle set with a drink, fruit and a small side dish. It is a sit-down farm-hotel meal, not proof that every roadside restaurant serves the same dish.
- Where to look
- Guomin Hotel Chinese restaurant; ask whether the individual set is currently offered.
- Fit it into your day
- Arrange lunch around the lower hotel area rather than leaving it until you are on a remote trail.
Confirm lamb, wheat noodles, broth and soy ingredients; the official restaurant asks for advance arrangements for individual meals.
Cabbage with a shared Taiwanese meal
The hotel's photographed group menu includes cabbage dishes among its Taiwanese-style shared courses. Seasonal produce is part of the restaurant's stated approach.
- Where to look
- Guomin Hotel Chinese restaurant; ask which vegetable dishes fit your party and reservation.
- Fit it into your day
- A booked shared dinner can anchor the overnight visit after the farm walk.
A vegetable dish may use meat stock or other animal ingredients; group menus and substitutions require confirmation.
Dai-style pepper chicken
A current menu image on the official hotel page lists Dai-style pepper chicken, connecting the restaurant offering with Cingjing's Yunnan and Myanmar cultural background.
- Where to look
- Guomin Hotel Chinese restaurant, subject to the actual menu and advance booking.
- Fit it into your day
- Consider it as part of a shared meal rather than assuming an individual portion is available.
Ask about spice level, chicken, sauces and allergens; do not assume the pictured group menu suits every party size.
Cow- and sheep-milk candy
The farm FAQ identifies candy made with cow or sheep milk among its farm products. This is a small purchase for the journey, rather than a substitute for arranging lunch.
- Where to look
- Qingjing Farm sales points; check the package and current stock.
- Fit it into your day
- Pick it up after the pasture visit if you would like a farm-linked souvenir.
Both versions contain milk; inspect ingredients and allergy warnings rather than treating sheep milk as dairy-free.
Give the gardens and settlement history some room
The Small Swiss Garden offers a different scale from the open pasture, with planted grounds and water rather than another long mountain ascent. It suits the lower-area part of the visit, especially when the night's accommodation is nearby. An afternoon cloudbank may soften the distant views without removing the pleasure of a shorter garden walk.
Cingjing's history is also more specific than its European-style buildings suggest. The farm's English account describes veterans and families with Yunnan and Myanmar connections, alongside the Paiyi or Dai cultural heritage represented at Bowang New Village. The Guomin Hotel's veterans museum and the cultural exhibition offer context; confirm actual opening and any organised programme rather than assuming a performance is included.

Treat Hehuanshan and the return journey as separate plans
From the west, the official approach runs through Puli and Wushe before climbing Provincial Highway 14A to Cingjing. The farm FAQ lists Nantou Bus connections from Taichung, including services reached from the high-speed-rail station; some journeys require a Puli transfer. Check the operator's current departure and return rather than assigning a fixed journey time to every service.
Hehuanshan is farther up the mountain road and at much higher altitude. An excursion needs its own forecast, road check and confirmed return, even if you are already sleeping in Cingjing. The old eastern approach through Hualien and the Central Cross-Island Highway is not evidence that a through route is currently open. Stay with a confirmed western connection unless the relevant authorities establish otherwise.

Practical questions
Is Cingjing better as a day trip or an overnight stay?
A focused farm day trip works around confirmed return transport. One booked night gives the grasslands, garden and a meal their own space without turning Hehuanshan into a rushed extra stop.
Can I walk between all the Cingjing attractions?
Do not assume a compact, level site. Attractions and accommodation are spread along the hillside; the official trails include steps. Check the route between your exact room, farm entrance and return stop.
Are sheep-shearing and horse demonstrations guaranteed?
No. The farm FAQ says severe weather can cancel performances. Check the current programme on the day; an advertised activity is not a weather guarantee.
Can I combine Cingjing with Hehuanshan?
Yes, as a separately arranged mountain outing when road access and weather allow. Hehuanshan is much higher, so a farm visit alone does not establish fitness, transport or safe access to a summit.
