Taiwan in 7 days: three nights each in Taipei and Tainan

Taipei and Tainan make a seven-day trip feel like a journey between two city stories. The capital offers a major museum collection and old riverfront trade; Tainan answers with temples, historic lanes and meals that belong to the city. Three nights in each base leave room for those differences to emerge, while one railway day connects them without pretending the station transfer is sightseeing time.

Suggested time
7 days and 6 nights: Taipei 3 nights, Tainan 3 nights
Where to stay
Central Taipei for nights 1–3, West Central Tainan for nights 4–6
Season and timing
Choose dates around the actual city forecast and attraction calendars. Tainan’s official first-visitor guide advises sun protection and water in summer; no season guarantees rail or attraction access.

The short answer

Spend six nights in two bases: Taipei for nights 1–3, a railway move on day 4, then Tainan for nights 4–6 with central heritage on day 5 and Anping on day 6. Day 7 stays clear for the departure you have confirmed. The route pairs the capital’s collection and trading quarter with Tainan’s temples, old lanes and meals, while keeping the southern city connection separate from the high-speed train. Choose the actual departure airport before booking the railway move; a southbound week does not automatically mean a flight home from the south.

Days 1–2: arrive in Taipei, then give the capital a full day

Day 1 begins with the airport connection and a central Taipei check-in, not a race towards the south. The Airport MRT serves Taipei Main Station; the final city connection and hotel entrance still need checking. Keep the evening local, with a seated meal and a first neighbourhood walk if the flight leaves you enough energy. Nights 1–3 are in the same Taipei room.

On day 2, the National Palace Museum and Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall introduce different sides of the capital. The collection in Shilin and the memorial in Zhongzheng need an actual city journey between them, so choose the museum calendar and transport before fixing the sequence. Taipei’s museum listing shows a Monday closure. Give the collection the time it deserves rather than using the remaining hours to add a distant town.

Day 3: let Dadaocheng set a slower city rhythm

Dadaocheng makes the last full Taipei day a neighbourhood story rather than another collection of landmarks. Its river-port history is tied to tea and cloth commerce, and the old trading streets lead towards the Tamsui River setting. A morning in the lanes, a seated lunch and an afternoon by the river give the day a connected shape without promising that a particular shop or market will be open.

Stay in the same Taipei hotel for night 3. That keeps the afternoon free of luggage and makes the next morning’s railway move easier to plan. Pack after dinner, with the complete station-to-hotel journey in Tainan already chosen. This route leaves Jiufen for a different trip or a changed Taipei allocation; it does not try to fit a hill-town excursion around the southbound transfer.

Days 4–5: travel south, then find Tainan on foot

Day 4 belongs to the journey and the change of city. Tainan’s official transport guide offers high-speed and conventional railway options from Taipei. With high-speed rail, Tainan HSR Station is in Guiren; the operator describes a corridor to Shalun Station and a local railway connection towards downtown Tainan. Compare that whole journey with the hotel rather than treating the high-speed platform as an old-city arrival. Settle into West Central Tainan for nights 4–6.

Give day 5 to the central heritage streets, Confucius Temple and Guohua Street food. Tainan’s first-visitor guide presents temples, old houses and meals as a slower city experience, making a seated breakfast and a lunch pause part of the route rather than interruptions. Choose the actual open visits around the walking and the weather. Returning to the same room leaves Anping as the following day’s distinct outing.

Days 6–7: explore Anping and keep the departure connection clear

Day 6 goes to Anping, with the Old Fort and Tree House as the central pair. The city’s fort account distinguishes a surviving Dutch-period wall from later rebuilding; the Tree House occupies an old warehouse transformed by banyan roots. Those are different chapters within one district, so a meal and the surrounding lanes can join them without another hotel move. Confirm the local return to your West Central room for the last night.

Day 7 is departure, planned around the flight you can actually book. Tainan’s transport page lists Route 111 to Kaohsiung International Airport, which is an option when its current service fits a confirmed flight. A Taoyuan departure instead needs the verified northbound railway and airport connection. Neither option depends on an assumed last train, and a final breakfast belongs in the day only when it leaves that journey comfortable.

Practical questions

How are the six nights divided on this Taiwan route?

Three nights in central Taipei, then three in West Central Tainan. Days 1–3 belong to Taipei, day 4 is the southbound railway move, days 5–6 cover Tainan and Anping, and day 7 is departure.

Is Tainan HSR Station the downtown railway station?

No. THSR places its Tainan station in Guiren and describes the corridor to Shalun Station for a local railway connection towards downtown Tainan. Choose that onward leg and the final hotel connection as part of the journey.

Can I visit Anping without changing hotels?

Yes, this sample keeps the West Central Tainan room for all three southern nights. Day 6 is a separate Anping outing, with the actual local journey and return arranged around the open attractions.

Do I need a flight home from Kaohsiung?

No, but the departure airport must fit the plan before you book the southbound move. A confirmed Kaohsiung flight may suit Route 111; a Taoyuan flight needs a different verified northbound journey and airport connection.
