Taichung in two nights: museums, greenway and Fengjia food
Taichung is easiest to enjoy when its museums, green spaces and food districts are given their own parts of the day. The older city around Taichung Park has a different feel from the West District museum area, while Fengjia comes into its own as an evening outing. A short stay can take in all three without treating them as one walkable neighbourhood.

- Suggested time
- 2 nights, with an arrival-day walk and a full museum-and-food day
- Where to stay
- Taichung TRA Station area for onward trains; West District for museums and Calligraphy Greenway
- Season and timing
- Choose weather suitable for city walks and keep a museum visit available for rain. Check the current forecast and institution opening before deciding which day should be outdoors.
The short answer
Stay two nights near Taichung Station or in West District: spend the first day around Taichung Park, then pair museums and Calligraphy Greenway with a Fengjia evening. The station area suits onward railway travel, while West District puts the arts-and-greenway part of the visit at the centre of your stay. Choose the Fine Arts Museum or Natural Science Museum according to your interests rather than rushing through both, and arrange the journey back from Fengjia before the evening begins.
Choose a city base before planning the museum day
Taichung Station means the conventional Taiwan Railways station in Central District, whereas the high-speed-rail station is in Wuri. That distinction matters more than a hotel’s promise of being near “the station”. The city’s official arrival guide links the HSR station with New Wuri and onward Taiwan Railways services to the city station; compare the actual hotel address with the station you will use.
Staying around the city station keeps railway arrivals and onward journeys straightforward. West District is the alternative when the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts and Calligraphy Greenway are the main reason to come. Whichever area you choose, keep the same hotel for both nights so the full day can be spent exploring rather than moving luggage between districts.
Let Taichung Park shape the arrival day
Taichung Park provides a useful first outing in the older city. The lake and its pavilion offer a quieter scene than a night-market crowd, with room for a walk after the journey. It is a place to settle into the city rather than another timed attraction to race through before reaching the hotel.
An arrival-day park visit also leaves the following day free for the museum area. If travel runs late or the weather turns, a proper meal and an early night still leave the plan intact. There is little benefit in fitting a museum, the greenway and Fengjia into the hours left after a long transfer.

Make time for the local food
What to eat and where to look
Sun cakes
A Taichung specialty with a layered pastry crust and a sweet maltose filling.
- Where to look
- Bakeries selling Taichung sun cakes; the city tourism guide lists them among its signature foods.
- Fit it into your day
- Share one after a museum visit or keep it as a bakery souvenir.
Ask the bakery about ingredients and allergens; the tourism description does not establish a milk-free, egg-free or vegetarian recipe.
Taichung thick noodle soup
The city’s version is described with thick noodles, shrimp, Chinese leek, fried garlic and dried radish in a thick soup.
- Where to look
- Shops serving thick noodle soup, using the city’s food guide as a starting point.
- Fit it into your day
- Make it a meal stop rather than adding it after several large market dishes.
The cited version contains shrimp; ask about the stock and other ingredients if you have dietary restrictions.
Bubble milk tea
Creamy tea and chewy pearls are paired in the drink highlighted by Taichung’s official food guide.
- Where to look
- Tea shops in the city; compare the actual drink and toppings on the menu.
- Fit it into your day
- Use it as a break between city stops instead of treating it as another full meal.
Check milk, sugar and topping ingredients with the shop; a tea-based drink is not automatically dairy-free.
Follow the greenway between art and a different kind of museum
The National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts focuses on Taiwanese art through collections, research and exhibitions. Its grounds include outdoor sculpture, so the visit can continue beyond the galleries when the weather allows. Check the museum’s current exhibition and opening information before making it the anchor of the day.
Calligraphy Greenway connects the Fine Arts Museum area with the National Museum of Natural Science to the north. The latter includes life science, human cultures, the global environment and a botanical garden, giving it a different appeal from an art gallery. The tree-lined boulevard creates a natural pause between stops, but its connection is an invitation to choose a route, not a requirement to see every museum in one day.

Give Fengjia the evening and leave room for dinner
Fengjia Night Market is a commercial and food district around Feng Chia University, with Wenhua, Fengjia and Fuxing roads forming part of its setting. It is a separate outing from the West District museums. Planning the connection before leaving the hotel makes it easier to enjoy the evening without assuming the market is just beyond the greenway.
A few shared dishes work better than a succession of full meals. Taichung’s own food guide highlights thick noodle soup, sun cakes and bubble milk tea, alongside snacks popular across Taiwan. The soup makes a substantial stop, tea offers a break, and a sun cake can travel back to the hotel. Check ingredients with the actual vendor, then leave enough time for the return to your chosen base.

Keep the airport and onward railway journeys distinct
Taoyuan International Airport is a workable arrival point for this city stay. The official Taichung arrival guide describes a route through Taoyuan’s high-speed-rail station, THSR Taichung and New Wuri, continuing by Taiwan Railways to the city station. Those are separate connections, so allow for changing trains rather than treating the route as one direct ride.
Taichung Airport is another option when its flights suit the wider trip; the same city guide lists bus connections into Taichung and the Chaoma area. Current services and the location of your hotel should decide the final route. A station-area stay supports an onward Sun Moon Lake or Lukang journey, but each outing still needs its own transport check.
Practical questions
How many nights should I spend in Taichung?
Two nights allow an arrival-day park walk and a full day for a chosen museum, Calligraphy Greenway and Fengjia in the evening. Keep one hotel rather than moving between districts.
Should I stay near Taichung Station or in West District?
The Taichung TRA Station area suits railway arrivals and onward travel. West District suits a stay centred on the Fine Arts Museum and Calligraphy Greenway. Check the exact address: THSR Taichung is a different station in Wuri.
Do I need to visit both main museums?
No. The Fine Arts Museum focuses on art, while the Natural Science Museum covers science, human cultures and the environment. Choose the one that suits your interests and use the greenway as part of the walk.
Is Fengjia Night Market next to Calligraphy Greenway?
Treat Fengjia as a separate evening outing. It is the food and commercial district around Feng Chia University; plan both the connection there and the return to your city base.
