Taiwan entry checks: passports, visas and the arrival card

Taiwan’s arrival formalities belong at the beginning of the booking process, before a city hotel or onward train becomes a fixed commitment. The useful distinction is between permission to enter, the arrival card and customs: each has its own authority, and completing one does not replace the others. Once those checks are settled, a single Taipei base leaves the first day free to become a city visit rather than a sequence of last-minute administrative errands.

The short answer

For a first Taiwan stay, use one Taipei hotel for four nights: complete entry checks before flying, then give the first full day to the city. Passport nationality, document type and travel purpose determine the appropriate visa route; a holiday plan alone does not establish eligibility. The BOCA visa-exempt page checked on 2026-10-08 distinguishes those conditions and directs visitors to the official arrival-card system. Keep the hotel address and confirmed departure arrangements available, then follow Customs’ red-channel guidance if anything requires declaration or you are unsure. Recheck the responsible authorities before travel.

Match the entry route to your actual passport

Start with the Bureau of Consular Affairs rather than an undated nationality list on a booking site. Its visa-exempt entry page, checked on 2026-10-08, separates eligible nationalities and permitted stays, and adds conditions for particular passport types and purposes. Read the category that applies to the document you will actually carry; an ordinary passport and an emergency travel document are not interchangeable.

The same official page includes passport-validity conditions and exceptions, confirmed departure arrangements, and additional accommodation or funds requirements for some nationalities. This guide does not turn those distinctions into one rule for everybody. If the visa-exempt route does not fit, follow BOCA’s visa guidance or the responsible overseas mission before committing to the journey.

Treat the arrival card as a separate official step

The Tourism Administration directs arriving visitors to the National Immigration Agency’s online arrival card. BOCA’s visa-exempt page checked on 2026-10-08 also links that official system and gives its submission guidance. Follow the current instructions for your arrival date; the form is an immigration step, not a substitute for a visa or a promise of admission.

Keep your chosen accommodation and confirmed departure arrangements together with the passport details needed for the journey. Working through the official instructions before flying gives you time to ask the responsible authority about a question that does not match your situation. The hotel booking, the arrival card and the applicable entry permission each serve a different purpose, so keep all three decisions clear as you prepare.

Make time for the local food

What to eat and where to look

01

Beef noodle soup

The national snack guide describes beef and noodles in a seasoned broth, including a preparation using spicy bean paste. Recipes vary between kitchens.

Where to look
A current noodle-shop menu near your Taipei hotel; check the actual dish and price.
Fit it into your day
Make a seated bowl the arrival meal rather than planning several tastings after a flight.

Contains beef; ask about wheat, soy, spice and any other ingredients relevant to your diet.

02

Pepper bun

The cited national guide describes an oven-baked bun with pork, green onion, black pepper, herbs and sesame.

Where to look
A stall or bakery actually listing pepper buns; the guide does not establish any one vendor’s hours.
Fit it into your day
Choose one as a smaller city snack, leaving room for a later meal.

Contains pork and sesame; check wheat and other allergens. Allow the hot filling to cool before eating.

03

Oyster omelette

The national description combines oysters, potato and tapioca starch, eggs and leafy vegetables, finished with sweet-and-sour sauce.

Where to look
Current night-market or restaurant menus, rather than assuming a named stall serves it every day.
Fit it into your day
Share a serving during a market evening if you are trying other dishes.

Contains molluscs and egg; check the sauce, other ingredients and shared cooking equipment.

Keep immigration and customs decisions distinct

Taipei Customs’ actual Must Know page identifies immigration document examination separately from quarantine and luggage inspection. At customs, its Red Channel is for goods that need declaration and also for consultation when you are unsure; the Green Channel is for travellers with nothing to declare. Those official instructions were checked on 2026-10-08.

Customs says that luggage may be inspected in either channel and warns against carrying baggage for somebody else. The contents of your own bag should determine the questions you ask before travelling: consult the current cash-control, food and quarantine rules for what you will carry. If a declaration is needed, or you are uncertain how a rule applies, the Red Channel provides a place to raise it with Customs.

Let a settled Taipei base shape the first day

Four nights in one central Taipei hotel provide a simple starting point after the paperwork. The actual Airport MRT map links the airport terminals with A1 Taipei Main Station, while the city railways are separate connections. Compare the hotel entrance with the station you will actually use, and confirm service for your arrival rather than assuming that every central room has a direct airport train.

A seated noodle meal and a modest neighbourhood outing make more sense on arrival than another long transfer. Keep the first full day for the city, with the remaining time chosen around the current attraction calendars. A hotel confirmation supports your planning and any applicable documentation requirement; it does not, by itself, decide entry eligibility.

Practical questions

Does every tourist enter Taiwan visa-free?

No. Use the current BOCA guidance for your nationality, passport type and travel purpose. Its visa-exempt page checked on 2026-10-08 contains different categories and additional conditions; this guide makes no blanket eligibility promise.

Is the online arrival card the same as a visa?

No. The Tourism Administration and BOCA link the National Immigration Agency’s official arrival-card system as a separate immigration step. Follow its current instructions as well as the entry route applicable to your passport.

Should I choose the Green Channel if I am unsure about my luggage?

Taipei Customs’ Must Know page checked on 2026-10-08 directs passengers in doubt to the Red Channel for consultation. Inspection can take place in either channel; do not treat the Green Channel as a way to avoid a declaration.

Where should I spend the first nights after arrival?

One central Taipei hotel for four nights is the sample plan here. Confirm the Airport MRT arrival, the onward city connection and the exact hotel entrance before booking; entry permission remains a separate authority decision.

Does this experience fit your route?

Arrange any city tour after your entry route and arrival transport are settled; a tour booking does not establish permission to enter Taiwan.
