Taiwan in 10 days: Taipei, Taichung, Tainan and Kaohsiung
Western Taiwan offers a satisfying change of scene without a new hotel every night. Taipei introduces trading streets and contemporary city life, Taichung gives museums a greener setting, and Tainan slows the journey into temples and small local meals. Kaohsiung ends the route beside an urban harbour. The railway connects those chapters, while the local journey from each station decides whether the arrival evening feels easy.

- Suggested time
- 10 days and 9 nights: Taipei 3, Taichung 2, Tainan 2, Kaohsiung 2
- Where to stay
- Central Taipei, central or West District Taichung, West Central Tainan, then a confirmed Kaohsiung city hotel
- Season and timing
- Choose dates against current city forecasts, railway services and attraction calendars. Rain can change an outdoor day; no season guarantees every connection or opening.
The short answer
Spend nine nights across Taipei (three) and Taichung, Tainan and Kaohsiung (two each), pairing capital neighbourhoods, museums, heritage streets and harbour culture with separate railway moves. Use days 4, 6 and 8 for southbound transfers, with the full days for those city visits and day 10 kept for departure. Central city hotels leave space for proper meals after the train, rather than another luggage move. Confirm the arrival station as carefully as the city: Taichung and Tainan high-speed stops are separate from their downtown railway stations. A southern departure suits this sequence; a Taoyuan flight needs a different return plan.
Days 1–3: let Taipei settle into the trip
On day 1, reach the central Taipei hotel before asking the evening to do much more than dinner. The airport railway ends its own leg at Taipei Main Station; the walk, Metro ride or arranged transfer to the room is a separate choice. Keeping all three nights here lets day 2 belong to an older neighbourhood such as Dadaocheng, whose riverfront trading streets give the visit a coherent theme.
Keep day 3 for the museum or contemporary city outing that most interests you, checking the actual programme before making it the day’s anchor. A market meal can follow when its location suits the hotel return. Taipei is the introduction rather than a race through every landmark: two full days give the capital its own rhythm before the suitcase moves south.
Days 4–5: arrive in Taichung, then follow the museum greenway
Day 4 is the move to Taichung, followed by the local journey to the chosen room. The city’s official arrival guide distinguishes THSR Taichung and New Wuri from downtown TRA Taichung; compare that full connection with the hotel address before selecting a train. An uncomplicated first meal and a look around the nearby streets are enough after arrival, leaving the museum district for the following day.
On day 5, choose the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts or the National Museum of Natural Science as the main visit, then give Calligraphy Greenway time around it. The national description identifies a tree-lined boulevard joining the two museum areas, with landscape art and a leisurely city setting. Their connection makes a pleasant route, rather than an obligation to complete both collections. Return to the same Taichung room for the second night.

Make time for the local food
What to eat and where to look

Beef noodles
The national snack guide describes beef cooked in broth with spicy bean paste, followed by the noodles. Individual kitchens make their own versions.
- Where to look
- A current Taipei noodle-shop menu near the first hotel, with the actual preparation explained.
- Fit it into your day
- Make a seated bowl part of the arrival evening rather than collecting several rushed tastings.
Contains beef; ask about wheat, soy, spice, broth and other ingredients.
Danzai noodles
The national guide describes oil noodles and bean sprouts in a small bowl, with meat or an egg cooked in soy sauce among the toppings.
- Where to look
- A current Tainan noodle-shop menu during the city stay.
- Fit it into your day
- Choose a modest bowl during the heritage day, leaving another meal for a different local specialty.
Ask about meat, egg, soy, noodles and the actual broth, including fish or other seafood.
Oyster omelette
The national account combines oysters with potato starch and tapioca, egg and leafy vegetables, skillet-fried and served with sauce.
- Where to look
- A confirmed city market or restaurant offering the dish during the route.
- Fit it into your day
- Share a cooked plate during an evening meal, with the hotel return already clear.
Contains oysters, which are molluscs, and egg; confirm the sauce and shared cooking equipment.
Days 6–7: give Tainan its own heritage and meal rhythm
Use day 6 for the southbound railway booking and the Tainan hotel connection. With high-speed rail, Tainan’s station and downtown railway station are different arrival points, so the last city leg deserves its own arrangement. A West Central room keeps the heritage streets and food exploration within the same base. Once the luggage is settled, a small danzai-noodle bowl is a more comfortable introduction than a rushed tour of distant districts.
Day 7 can follow the central temples and historic streets, with a seated meal interrupting the walking rather than becoming another task to collect. Tainan’s regional description establishes Chihkan and Anping as distinct historic attractions; choose the central visit first, adding Anping only if its separate local journey leaves the day comfortable. The same room for both nights means dinner can remain in Tainan instead of becoming preparation for another checkout.

Days 8–10: finish beside Kaohsiung harbour and protect departure
On day 8, continue to Kaohsiung and check which station your ticket actually uses. The city distinguishes downtown TRA Kaohsiung from the Zuoying high-speed hub, integrated with TRA Xinzuoying and Metro connections. Arrange the final hotel journey around that arrival, then let Pier-2 and the harbour provide a first local outing when conditions suit. Staying two nights leaves day 9 for a fuller city day without carrying the bags.
A confirmed guided Kaohsiung outing is an optional way to shape day 9; the specific indexed product here names harbour and cultural stops, but its current route and inclusions need checking. Independent exploration works equally well with a clear hotel return and time for dinner. Leave day 10 for the booked airport journey. This southbound sequence fits a confirmed southern flight; if departure is from Taoyuan, revise the return before reserving the city nights.
Practical questions
How many nights does this ten-day Taiwan route need?
Nine: three in Taipei and two each in Taichung, Tainan and Kaohsiung. Days 4, 6 and 8 are the main railway moves, and day 10 is reserved for departure.
Does high-speed rail deliver me to every downtown hotel?
No. Taichung and Tainan high-speed stations are distinct from their city railway stations, and Zuoying is distinct from downtown TRA Kaohsiung. Compare the complete station-to-hotel connection before choosing a ticket.
Do I need to fly home from Kaohsiung?
A confirmed Kaohsiung departure suits this southbound sequence, but it is not a requirement. A Taoyuan flight needs a revised northbound railway and airport plan; do not assume it fits without changing the final day.
Does the suggested Kaohsiung tour cover the whole itinerary?
No. It is an optional city outing during the last two-night base. Confirm current stops, pickup, admissions and return with the operator; intercity trains and the other hotel stays are separate bookings.
