Xiaoliuqiu travel guide: one island night and a gentle coast day
Xiaoliuqiu is a coral island where a short ferry crossing can lead to a slower rhythm: a harbor arrival, a meal, then the shore rather than another transfer. Its turtles are part of that living coast, not a sighting to demand. One island night gives a first visit more breathing room, provided the return boat and the rules protecting the shore remain part of the plan.

- Suggested time
- Two days with one island night; a day trip only with confirmed outward and return boats
- Where to stay
- Near Baisha harbor for the arrival connection, with the hotel’s actual location checked
- Season and timing
- Check sea conditions for the crossing and any water activity; respect seasonal turtle and land-crab restrictions.
The short answer
Spend two days with one night near Baisha harbor: visit Vase Rock and the nearby shore first, then choose a confirmed guided water activity or a land outing before returning. Stay in the same island accommodation and arrange its actual harbor connection. Turtle sightings depend on wildlife and conditions; a shoreline walk remains worthwhile without a swim. Check the ferry operator and current beach restrictions before leaving the mainland, and make the second day fit the booked return rather than squeezing a full island circuit around the last boat.
Arrive at Baisha with the return already in mind
Donggang’s private ferry connections to Baisha Tourist Harbor provide one approach to the island. The harbor is beside Zhongao Beach, while Vase Rock gives the arrival day a clear nearby landmark: a coral-limestone formation shaped by sea erosion. Choose accommodation by the actual harbor journey and the route you want to walk, rather than assuming every island room is beside the pier. A local meal and a gentle shore visit make a better first afternoon than taking luggage through every attraction.
The current scenic-area local-transport page makes important distinctions. Checked on 2026-10-08, it listed the Yanpu–Liuqiu private line as temporarily suspended from 2025-11-18 and the public Donggang–Dafu boat as temporarily suspended for annual maintenance. Those notices are separate from the listed private Donggang–Baisha services. The Dongliu operator’s current notice also reduced particular weekday departures from 1 October 2026. Choose the actual company and boarding harbor, confirm the latest return, and carry the valid identification its boarding rules require.
Give turtles space and choose the activity for the conditions
A qualified guided snorkeling or diving activity can be part of the second day when the operator and sea conditions support it. The scenic-area visitor guidance asks travelers to use legal operators with valid business registration. Confirm the meeting place, equipment, personal requirements and weather policy before paying; a diving product is not interchangeable with a casual beach swim. You can also watch from shore for turtles surfacing, without promising an encounter.
The same guidance requires at least 5 meters of distance from sea turtles. Never touch, chase, surround, feed or block them, and do not disturb resting animals. Intertidal visits have their own controlled access and low-tide guidance; join an appropriate guide and check the current reservation rules rather than walking across any reef you see exposed. If weather prevents the activity, keep the visit on land and let an open viewpoint or temple replace it.

Make time for the local food
What to eat and where to look
Grilled squid
The scenic-area food guide explicitly names grilled squid among Xiaoliuqiu’s island food choices.
- Where to look
- Island food shops with squid and the preparation clearly identified.
- Fit it into your day
- A savory meal stop after a shore visit, with other dishes chosen to suit appetite.
Squid is a mollusc. Ask about sauces, other fish or seafood ingredients and shared preparation when allergies matter.
Dried dorado fish fried rice
The official specialty guide describes dried dorado fish being combined with stir-fried rice as a Xiaoliuqiu dish.
- Where to look
- Island restaurants listing the particular fish fried rice, with current availability checked.
- Fit it into your day
- A seated main meal rather than another snack to eat between transfers.
Contains fish. Check bones, egg, sauces and other ingredients in the actual serving; the guide does not establish every restaurant’s recipe.
Mahua fried dough twists
The authority identifies fried dough twists as a Xiaoliuqiu snack and souvenir, with a range of flavors.
- Where to look
- Island snack shops, inspecting the chosen flavor and package.
- Fit it into your day
- A small sweet snack after lunch, or a packaged order to take back.
Check wheat, egg, dairy, nuts and other flavor ingredients; do not assume every dough twist has the same recipe or storage requirements.
Keep the land route modest and observe seasonal closures
Biyun Temple offers a different part of island life from the sea. The official attraction account describes a center of worship for local residents, with its present form following rebuilding in 1990. A respectful visit can sit between a meal and the return to your hotel; follow visitor instructions without assuming every interior is available. The White Lighthouse is another separate land stop, best considered as part of a confirmed route rather than a promise of tower access.
Zhongao Beach’s official page warns that visitors are prohibited from entering its beach and intertidal conservation area from May 1 to October 31 between 20:00 and 05:00, despite its general all-day listing. Do not plan a nighttime beach walk during that period. The island’s land-crab guidance also describes vehicle restrictions in designated areas during May–September from 19:00 to 22:00. Follow the exact local signs and current notices; a quiet vehicle or dim light does not remove a closure.

Pause for island food, then make the mainland connection
The scenic-area food guide distinguishes Xiaoliuqiu dishes from neighboring Donggang specialties. It names grilled squid and fried dough twists, and describes dried dorado fish fried rice as an island choice. A savory meal after the shore visit, then a small sweet snack, gives the day an easy shape. Ask the vendor about the actual fish, other seafood, sauces and allergens, and choose cooked food when the conditions for raw ingredients cannot be verified.
Kaohsiung International Airport is a mainland gateway, not an island airport. The official getting-here page lists airport access to Dongliu Line Pier using 9117B and the Zuoying connection using 9127D or 9127G. The ferry remains a separate leg, so check the bus stop, boarding company and current sailing before choosing a tight arrival. On the island, the authority introduced route 601 in 2026; check its current stops and service for your hotel or land outing rather than assuming every landmark has a frequent bus. Leave the final part of the second day for the confirmed boat back.

Practical questions
How long should I stay on Xiaoliuqiu?
Two days with one island night allow a shore visit, local meal and a separately confirmed water or land outing without rushing back immediately. A day trip needs current outward and return boats checked first.
Are all ferry routes operating?
No. On 2026-10-08, the official guide listed the Yanpu private line and public Donggang–Dafu boat as temporarily suspended, separately from private Donggang–Baisha services. Confirm the particular operator, current notice and return before traveling.
Can I swim close to a sea turtle?
The official guidance requires at least 5 meters of distance and forbids touching, chasing, feeding, surrounding or blocking turtles. Choose a legal qualified operator and respect wildlife whether you watch from water or shore; no encounter is guaranteed.
Can I walk Zhongao Beach at night?
Its official page prohibits entry to the beach and intertidal conservation area from May 1 to October 31 between 20:00 and 05:00. Follow the specific conservation restriction and current signs instead of the generic all-day listing.
