Green Island guide: Nanliao, coral reefs and Zhaori
Green Island offers more than the bright water around its coral reefs. A lighthouse looks back to an island rescue, while the former prison and memorial ask visitors to consider a much darker history. Along the coast, Zhaori brings seawater into a hot-spring landscape. A short stay works best when those different experiences have room of their own, and the return crossing is treated as part of the trip.

- Suggested time
- Two nights, with one full island day and flexible arrival and departure time
- Where to stay
- Nanliao village on Green Island, with the actual harbor or airport pickup confirmed
- Season and timing
- Sea conditions and weather shape the crossing and reef outings; an open coast or a past photograph does not establish safe water access today.
The short answer
Stay two nights in Nanliao: give one full day to the lighthouse and memorial park, with the remaining time for reef activities and Zhaori hot spring when conditions allow. Nanliao keeps the stay near the ferry gateway, with the visitor centre by the airport as a useful orientation stop. Arrange any marine activity locally around actual conditions, and confirm Zhaori admission before building the day around a soak. Both the flight and ferry need separate booking and weather checks. Leave room between the island return and a mainland connection rather than treating either crossing as certain.
Make Nanliao the base, and settle both transfers
The official ferry guide connects Fugang Harbor in Taitung with Nanliao Harbor on Green Island, while the aviation guide lists Daily Air flights from Taitung. These are separate options rather than interchangeable departures from the same terminal. Before booking a mainland connection, establish which crossing you have reserved and how you will reach its actual departure point.
Nanliao village is a practical base for this compact stay. Ask the accommodation about arrival pickup and the transport it can actually arrange around the island, including the requirements for any rental. The visitor centre, directly opposite the airport exit, adds geological samples, local nature displays and underwater photography to the first orientation. A delayed arrival is a reason to shorten that day, rather than compress the entire island circuit into the remaining daylight.
Put the lighthouse and memorial into the same full day
The white lighthouse stands on the northwest coast. The maritime authority links its construction in 1939 to funds donated after island residents helped rescue passengers from the President Hoover. An exterior visit gives that story a setting above the water; it does not establish that visitors may climb the tower. When checked on 2026-10-08, the operator listed Monday closures, with a change to the following working day when a holiday includes Monday. Confirm access before setting out.
The Green Island White Terror Memorial Park deserves its own unhurried part of the day. The National Human Rights Museum describes the former political-prisoner sites of New Life Correction Center and Oasis Villa, and its park map identifies the Human Rights Memorial Park. This is a place for reflection rather than another scenic photo stop. The museum listed Tuesday-to-Sunday opening in the October-to-April off-season when checked on 2026-10-08; check its current notices when choosing the island day.

Make time for the local food
What to eat and where to look
Fried seafood
The East Coast authority specifically identifies fried seafood dishes among Green Island’s specialties, without fixing a species or recipe.
- Where to look
- Nanliao food shops or restaurants that list the actual dish and ingredients.
- Fit it into your day
- Use a cooked seafood order as part of lunch between the lighthouse and memorial visit.
Ask whether it contains fish, crustaceans or mollusks, and check batter, sauces and shared frying oil.
Garlic octopus
The regional tourism authority names garlic octopus as a Green Island seafood choice.
- Where to look
- Island seafood restaurants with garlic octopus on the current menu.
- Fit it into your day
- A shared order can accompany a seated meal, with the serving and preparation confirmed first.
Octopus is a mollusk. Confirm sauces, other seafood ingredients and shared preparation if relevant.
Seaweed mochi
A supplementary firsthand account of Nanliao’s snack shops describes seaweed mochi as an island specialty; current fillings are not verified.
- Where to look
- Nanliao specialty shops selling a labeled seaweed-mochi product.
- Fit it into your day
- Choose a small dessert or a clearly labeled snack for later, rather than assuming it is a full meal.
Check the actual filling for peanuts, sesame, dairy or other allergens. Do not assume a seaweed name makes every version vegan.
Let the reef outing follow the sea, rather than a fixed checklist
The Tourism Administration describes coral reefs around Green Island and a ring road linking the lighthouse, Guanyin Cave, Youzi Lake, Sleeping Beauty Rock and other coastal sights. A road outing and time in the water are different plans. Choose a manageable stretch with your local transport arrangement, instead of assuming every named viewpoint, cave or shore can be reached and entered on the same day.
For snorkeling or diving, the useful next step is a conversation with a local provider about the actual site, sea conditions, equipment and the experience required. A picture of clear water cannot answer those questions. Keep to designated access and local instructions, and let a coast walk or the visitor-centre displays replace the activity if it cannot safely go ahead. The trip still has a landscape to enjoy without turning an uncertain marine outing into an obligation.

Leave Zhaori and an island meal a little breathing room
Zhaori is a saltwater hot spring on the coast, with open-air pools described by the national and regional tourism authorities. Its sunrise and sea setting are the attraction, but a general tourism description does not confirm today’s admission, pool access or opening hours. Check the actual operating arrangements before committing to an early departure. Follow the posted bathing instructions, rinse first and take care on wet surfaces; the source water temperature is not a promise about the pool you will use.
Food can fit around those plans rather than becoming another long detour. The regional authority specifically names fried seafood and garlic octopus on Green Island. A supplementary firsthand Nanliao account also describes seaweed mochi, giving the meal a different finish. Ask what is on the actual menu and how it is prepared, with enough time afterward for the confirmed pickup or departure. Neither an island specialty nor a past restaurant visit guarantees today’s selection.

Practical questions
How long should I stay on Green Island?
Two nights give this plan one full island day, with time around the crossings for a reef activity or Zhaori when conditions allow. Keep the arrival and return flexible, and avoid relying on the crossing for a tight mainland connection.
Do I arrive by ferry or by plane?
The official guides list the ferry from Fugang to Nanliao and Daily Air flights from Taitung to Green Island. Check the actual booking, departure point and operating status; neither option has guaranteed seats or weather-independent service.
Can I assume Zhaori is open whenever I arrive?
No. The general tourism description does not establish current admission or pool availability. Confirm the operating arrangements directly and follow the posted bathing instructions; no round-the-clock opening is promised here.
What if the sea prevents a snorkeling outing?
Use the lighthouse, the memorial park and accessible coastal viewpoints as alternatives, checking their current access too. Arrange marine activities with a local provider around actual conditions rather than treating clear-water photographs as a safety assessment.
