Penghu travel guide: a Magong base, basalt shores and island days

Penghu rewards a stay that gives its different islands room. Magong brings temples and old harbor streets close together; across the connected main islands, village houses and basalt shores change the scene. A boat trip can add another chapter, but it belongs to the sea and the current sailing plan rather than a crowded list of places to collect.

The short answer

Stay three nights in Magong: give one day to its old streets and Tianhou Temple, one to Baisha and Xiyu, and another to a separately confirmed boat outing. Keep the same hotel for the connected main-island days, choosing its actual location against your arrival and local transport. A distant island visit depends on a booked route and suitable sea conditions; it is optional rather than a guaranteed third-day circuit. Leave time for meals and temple courtyards, and check both outward and return services before committing to the stay.

Let Magong give the islands their first story

Tianhou Temple is a useful beginning because Penghu’s maritime life and religious traditions meet here. The scenic-area authority describes Mazu worship as central to communities who live by the sea, with detailed wood and stone work in the temple’s successive halls. Give the courtyard and carvings time rather than treating the entrance as a photograph taken on the way to lunch. It remains a place of worship, so follow local visitor instructions and make room for worshippers.

The official Magong heritage route links the temple with Zhongyang Street, the Four-Eyes Well and Shuncheng Gate, then the military housing cultural area and Guanyinting. Choose a coherent walk from that route instead of promising every building or exhibition will be open. A Magong hotel lets the afternoon loosen into a meal and another harbor-side stroll without requiring a change of rooms. Check the current opening of any interior you particularly want to see.

Give Baisha and Xiyu a connected main-island day

The authority’s northern route takes the road through Baisha and across Penghu Great Bridge to Xiyu. This is a road outing, distinct from an offshore ferry trip. A few well-chosen stops are more satisfying than the entire official list: the bridge, Erkan village and a basalt viewpoint give the day different textures while leaving time for lunch and the return to Magong. Confirm the actual vehicle, pickup and route rather than assuming every stop is connected by a convenient bus.

Erkan’s traditional houses and the nearby basalt scenery tell different stories. The authority describes Chen Family Historical House as a representative historic home, built in 1910, while its northern route names Daguoye Columnar Basalt and Chixi Rock Waterfall among the geological sights. Choose a permitted viewpoint and follow local access instructions. Basalt beside the water is scenery to appreciate, not permission to climb cliffs or cross a tidal area. Keep the order flexible in strong wind or poor weather.

Make time for the local food

What to eat and where to look

01

Pan-fried green-onion pancakes

The scenic-area Magong heritage route explicitly lists these pancakes among its food recommendations.

Where to look
Magong food streets along the heritage walk, checking the vendor actually serving.
Fit it into your day
A savory stop during the old-town day, with time to sit or pause.

Ask about wheat, egg, fat, fillings and shared cooking surfaces; the route does not give a complete recipe.

02

Brown-sugar cake

Brown-sugar cake appears among the official Magong heritage route’s recommended foods.

Where to look
Magong bakeries or food shops with the product clearly labelled.
Fit it into your day
A small sweet order after a savory meal or a packaged snack for later.

Check wheat, egg, milk and other ingredients on the particular product; a sugar-based name does not establish allergy-safe preparation.

03

Salted crackers

The official heritage route includes salted crackers as another Magong food option.

Where to look
Magong snack shops, using the actual package and ingredients to choose.
Fit it into your day
A separate snack rather than a substitute for a proper meal on a boat day.

Read ingredients and storage advice; ask about wheat, dairy, sesame and other allergens rather than assuming all versions are identical.

Make an offshore island a separate booking

Penghu’s island-hopping routes should not be folded into the same road day. The scenic-area authority presents Cimei and Wangan outings separately from the main-island circuit, including an overnight Cimei option. Pick the actual island, departure harbor and return before booking, and ask how weather changes are handled. A photograph of the twin-heart stone weir or a boat on the sea does not establish a sailing for your travel date.

Air and sea access are also separate choices for arriving in Penghu. The official airport’s live page showed domestic services from Kaohsiung, Taipei Songshan, Taichung and Tainan when checked on 2026-10-08. The scenic-area ferry page describes Kaohsiung and Budai connections but warns that services vary with season and weather. Confirm the current operator and luggage arrangements rather than applying one quoted duration to every mainland port. An older flight overview still names a defunct airline, so this guide leaves airline choice and frequency to current booking information.

Build meals into the stay, then settle the airport connection

The official Magong heritage route recommends pan-fried green-onion pancakes, brown-sugar cake and salted crackers among its food stops. A savory order followed by something sweet is a better reason to pause than a race between famous storefronts. On the Baisha and Xiyu day, the authority’s route also names squid noodles and cactus ice, but availability and ingredients still belong to the business you find open. Ask about meat, fish, other seafood and allergens rather than assuming a snack’s name gives the complete recipe.

Kaohsiung International Airport is one international gateway for the visit; reaching Penghu then requires a separately confirmed domestic flight or sea journey. If you fly, arrange the final connection from Penghu Airport to your Magong hotel, checking current airport bus information or booking a road transfer. The airport is not an old-town hotel doorstep. Keep room between a mainland flight arrival and the island connection, and check the return independently rather than building a tight itinerary around an advertised fastest journey.

Practical questions

Where should I stay for a first Penghu visit?

Magong makes a useful base for its historic streets and the connected Baisha–Xiyu road day. Choose the hotel by its actual location and transport, and book any offshore island journey separately.

Can Baisha and Xiyu be visited without an island ferry?

The scenic-area northern route uses the road and Penghu Great Bridge between the connected main islands. Arrange the actual road transport; offshore islands are a separate boat booking.

Is a Cimei or Wangan boat trip guaranteed during a short stay?

No. Choose a specific route and confirm the current sailing, return and weather policy with the operator. Keep a main-island alternative rather than treating every offshore destination as part of one circuit.

Does an international flight arrive directly in Magong?

The airport services checked here are domestic connections. Kaohsiung International Airport is one international gateway, followed by a separately booked Penghu flight or sea journey and a local hotel connection.
