Kenting guide: beach bases, Longpan and a relaxed coastal stay
Kenting is more enjoyable when the coast is allowed to set the pace. A sandy bay, the exposed grassland at Longpan and the harbour at Houbihu offer quite different experiences, even though they are often folded into one sightseeing circuit. Choose where to sleep before deciding how many stops to make. A beach stay needs time for the beach itself, while the national park's varied coastline calls for judgement about weather and water conditions rather than a promise to swim everywhere.

- Suggested time
- 2 nights for beach time and one coastal outing; add nights if swimming or a booked activity is the priority
- Where to stay
- Kenting Road for a resort-led stay, or South Bay for a separately checked beach-focused base
- Season and timing
- Choose dates around the current coastal weather and the activity you want. Wind, sea conditions and operator decisions can change a water-based day; keep a land-based alternative.
The short answer
Stay two nights around Kenting Road or South Bay: give one day to a beach and Houbihu, then use the other for Longpan and an unhurried coastal outing. Choose a hotel by its actual beach access and confirmed transport, not the Kenting name alone. South Bay and Baisha are separate beach areas, while Longpan is a limestone grassland landscape. Check current weather, water-activity conditions and the return connection before committing to a full coastal circuit.
Choose the beach base before drawing the route
The Tourism Administration places Kenting National Park on the Hengchun Peninsula, where sandy bays, coral reefs, grasslands and forest are parts of a much broader landscape. A hotel labelled Kenting may suit one stretch of that landscape better than another. Compare its address, access to the beach you want and the transport for an outing; a resort on Kenting Road and a room at South Bay need not produce the same daily rhythm.
For a first stay, two nights let arrival and departure sit around a beach day and a coastal outing. Kenting Road works for a resort and dining plan, while South Bay suits a stay centred on that particular bay. Neither choice removes the need to confirm how you will reach Longpan, Houbihu or Baisha. If relying on public transport, check the actual stops and return services before booking accommodation around a photograph of a distant beach.
Spend time at one sandy bay rather than every bay
The park identifies South Bay as a sandy beach with visitor facilities, including showers, toilets and parking. Baisha is a separate small bay whose pale sand comes from eroded coral and shells. Choose one as the anchor for a beach day, leaving room for lunch and a rest instead of turning each stop into a quick photograph before getting back into the vehicle.
A beach description does not establish safe swimming conditions on your chosen day. The park's water-recreation notice warns that open water carries unpredictable risks and advises using qualified operators, arranging insurance and changing plans when the weather or your condition is unsuitable. Check the operator's actual meeting point, equipment and cancellation arrangements for a booked activity. A sheltered-looking shore is not a reason to ignore warnings or continue into the water when the plan should change.

Make time for the local food
What to eat and where to look
Steamed fish with lemon
Lotus at Caesar Park lists steamed fish with lemon on its Thai à la carte menu. It is a confirmed restaurant dish for a sit-down meal, rather than a promise about the catch at Houbihu.
- Where to look
- Lotus restaurant at Caesar Park, No. 6 Kenting Road; confirm the current menu and table availability.
- Fit it into your day
- Share it as the main part of dinner after the coastal outing.
Contains fish; ask about sauces, other seafood ingredients and bones before ordering.
Garlic-fried squid
The same operator menu lists deep-fried neritic squid with garlic. It offers a documented seafood choice within the resort's Thai dining menu.
- Where to look
- Lotus restaurant, checking the current preparation rather than assuming a harbour vendor offers the same dish.
- Fit it into your day
- Share a plate with a main dish instead of treating it as another full meal.
Contains squid, a mollusc; ask about batter ingredients and shared frying oil if you have allergies.
Green papaya salad
The Lotus menu lists green papaya salad and explicitly marks shrimp and peanuts among its ingredients. It gives a different texture from the cooked seafood dishes.
- Where to look
- Lotus restaurant at Caesar Park; confirm the menu and any requested ingredient changes directly.
- Fit it into your day
- Order it as a shared starter with dinner, with the spice level agreed when ordering.
The operator marks shrimp and peanuts. Do not assume a vegetable-based name means the salad is vegetarian or safe for shellfish and nut allergies.
See Longpan as a landscape, then slow down at Houbihu
Longpan offers a different scale from the beach: the park describes a grassland beside the Pacific coast, formed on a coral-reef limestone tableland. Let the exposed terrain and sea view be the purpose of the stop. It belongs in a coastal outing with time to look, rather than being treated as another swimming beach or a reason to scramble across unfamiliar ground for a photograph.
Houbihu gives the outing a harbour setting. The park identifies it as the Hengchun area's largest fishing harbour and describes its ocean-recreation role. Confirm any boat or water activity separately, including where it actually starts; being at a harbour does not establish that a particular trip is running. The order of these stops should follow your real transport and any reservation. Keeping only a few destinations makes it easier to return for a proper evening meal rather than racing the coastline.

Let the evening meal and return transfer stay predictable
A resort restaurant can give the evening a useful fixed point after an outdoor day. Caesar Park's Lotus restaurant on Kenting Road describes a Thai menu using Taiwanese ingredients, with an actual operator menu listing steamed fish with lemon, garlic-fried squid and green papaya salad. These are documented restaurant options, not claims that all three are traditional Kenting dishes or sold at every harbour stall. When checked on 2026-10-08, the operator listed Monday closures during October and lunch service only from Friday to Sunday. Match the meal to that notice, and confirm the current dinner service and a reservation before fixing the evening around it.
For arrival, Kaohsiung International Airport's official site confirms an MRT connection to downtown and HSR Zuoying. The park links to Pingtung Bus for onward planning; that operator's current homepage lists the Kenting Express 9189 and airport express 9117B, but a route name alone does not confirm your departure, stop or timetable. Match the actual service or a booked road transfer to your accommodation, and leave the sightseeing day after arrival rather than assuming a late connection includes beach time.

Practical questions
How many nights should I spend in Kenting?
Two nights allow a beach day and a coastal outing without making arrival or departure carry the whole itinerary. Add time if swimming or a booked water activity is the main purpose, and retain a weather-dependent alternative.
Should I stay on Kenting Road or at South Bay?
Choose Kenting Road for a resort and dining plan, or South Bay for a stay focused on that bay. Check the individual hotel address, actual beach access and your transport; the Kenting label alone does not answer those questions.
Is Longpan another swimming beach?
No. The park describes Longpan as grassland on a coral-reef limestone tableland beside the Pacific. Treat it as a coastal landscape stop; choose a beach and check current conditions separately if you want to swim.
What should I check before a water activity?
The park advises using a qualified operator, arranging insurance, considering your physical condition and changing plans in unsuitable weather. Confirm the meeting point, equipment and cancellation conditions; a general beach description does not verify that an activity is safe or operating today.
