Plan your trip · Luang Prabang, Vientiane Province and Vientiane Capital
First trip to Laos: one week from Luang Prabang to Vientiane
For a first week in Laos, follow the railway south rather than trying to see the whole country. Luang Prabang supplies the temples and the waterfall day, Vang Vieng the river and limestone scenery, and Vientiane a final evening before the flight home. The sequence is straightforward, but the railway stations are separate from the places where you sleep. Book the rooms and the trains as one plan, with road transfers between each station and your accommodation.

- Suggested time
- 7 days / 6 nights: Luang Prabang 3, Vang Vieng 2, Vientiane 1
- Where to stay
- Luang Prabang peninsula, Vang Vieng town by the Nam Song, then central Vientiane
- Season and timing
- The World Bank and Asian Development Bank climate profile describes Laos’s rainy season as May to mid-October and the dry season as mid-October to April. These are broad seasonal patterns, so leave room for rain outside those months.
The short answer
Plan seven days and six nights: three nights in Luang Prabang, two in Vang Vieng and one in Vientiane, entering at LPQ and leaving from VTE. Choose the rail dates and hotel nights before buying the final flight. For two adults on 16–22 November 2026, the published prices total US$617.26 + LAK2,284,700 for the Villa Chitdara rooms, two guided days, a tasting lunch, some dinners, Luang Prabang sights and the airport taxi. The Inthira and Chanthapanya rooms are a separate $236 at those hotels’ own “from” rates and are not part of the US$ total. Train tickets, station rides and Vientiane temple tickets have no published price and are not included. This north-to-south route gives each landscape time and avoids a return to the first airport.
The three bases and the nights to reserve
Keep one room in each town. In Luang Prabang, the old-town peninsula puts Wat Xieng Thong, the former palace and the riverside streets into the same stay. Vang Vieng works best as a town or Nam Song riverbank base for a guided outdoor day. In Vientiane, stay centrally for the final dinner and a separate airport transfer on departure day.
Concrete room choices are Villa Chitdara’s Superior double in Luang Prabang, Inthira Vang Vieng’s Deluxe double and Chanthapanya Hotel’s Superior King or Twin in Vientiane. Villa Chitdara lists a king-size bed or twin beds; Inthira and Chanthapanya explicitly list accommodation for two adults. Request three, two and one nights respectively. The cost section gives each hotel’s own rate.
Daily breakfast is included in Villa Chitdara’s rate and in direct bookings at Inthira. Chanthapanya’s page does not say whether its Superior rate includes breakfast or taxes, so ask when you book.
Seven days from temples to the capital
This is the route to book around. Keep the seventh day for departure; the six overnight stays are the first six days.
- Day 1 — Luang Prabang: arrive at LPQ, transfer to your peninsula room and walk by the rivers. Have a Lao dinner and settle in. Night 1 of 3 in Luang Prabang.
- Day 2 — temples and the palace: visit Wat Xieng Thong, have a tasting lunch, then use the National Museum’s afternoon opening. Climb Phousi if you want the city and Mekong view. Night 2 of 3 in Luang Prabang.
- Day 3 — Kuang Si and Pak Ou: take Tiger Trail’s guided day, using road transport and a short Mekong crossing to the caves, with lunch included. Return for dinner in town. Night 3 of 3 in Luang Prabang.
- Day 4 — to Vang Vieng: transfer to Luang Prabang station, take the direct train and arrange the Vang Vieng station-to-hotel ride. Walk by the Nam Song after checking in and have a Lao dinner at Riverside Boutique Resort. Night 1 of 2 in Vang Vieng.
- Day 5 — river and karst: a guided Nam Song kayak, cave and lagoon day, a full 09:00–17:00 outing. Reserve only the evening for time in Vang Vieng. Have dinner at Inthira Vang Vieng’s restaurant. Night 2 of 2 in Vang Vieng.
- Day 6 — to Vientiane: return to Vang Vieng station for the direct train south and transfer to your central hotel. Visit Wat Sisaket if your train gets you there early enough; otherwise keep the evening for the riverfront and a Lao dinner. That Luang suits a longer capital stay. One night in Vientiane.
- Day 7 — fly home: breakfast and the transfer to Wattay International Airport (VTE). Add another Vientiane night if you want a full capital sightseeing day rather than the short stop in this route.

What the three stops give you
Luang Prabang is where to spend the longest. Wat Xieng Thong’s sweeping roof and glass-tile murals are a close-up introduction to Lao temple architecture. The National Museum occupies the former royal palace; on the grounds, the royal car garage and the hall holding the sacred Pha Bang statue give different views of the former royal city. Phousi adds the panorama over the Mekong and town.
Tourism Luang Prabang’s listings checked on 15 October 2026 gave foreign admission at LAK30,000 for Wat Xieng Thong, LAK60,000 for the National Museum and LAK30,000 for Phousi. Wat Xieng Thong opens 06:00–18:00 daily. The museum opens 08:00–11:30 and 13:30–16:00, with ticket counters closing at 11:00 and 15:30; it closes for cleaning on the last Thursday of each month. Phousi lists 06:00–18:00, subject to seasonal changes. Cover shoulders and knees at religious sites and follow the local rules on shoes.
Kuang Si brings forest, cascades and pools; swim only where signs permit. Pak Ou has two caverns filled with Buddha statues, reached on this excursion by a small boat crossing from Pak Ou village to the base of the limestone cliff at the caves, returning to Pak Ou village afterwards. Tiger Trail’s POKS-1 tour leaves in the early morning and returns in the late afternoon, with lunch, guide, transport, boat and entry fees included. Its daily join-in price was US$121 per person for a minimum of two, plus a 3% card transaction fee when checked on 15 October 2026. Book the named tour directly and arrange its meeting point and start time. Weather can change this river crossing: Tiger Trail’s terms allow necessary changes for safety and exclude compensation for adverse-weather events beyond its control.
Vang Vieng is the landscape change: limestone karst beyond fields and the Nam Song. Wonderful Tours’ kayak, Tham Norn cave and Blue Lagoon outing starts at its office at 09:00, with a 10 km road transfer to Ban Vieng Sa Mai, a safety briefing, kayaking, Tham Ngangfar and Tham Norn cave stops, picnic lunch and a lagoon visit. It is listed as a 09:00–17:00 day with return to the hotel. Transport, guide, equipment, drinking water, lunch and entry fees are included. The specific product page listed US$40 per person for two on the same check date; obtain the current total from the operator before paying.
Vientiane is a short final stop. Make Wat Sisaket the first temple choice after checking into the central hotel: its sanctuary wall paintings depict a story of the Buddha’s earlier life. That Luang is the great angular stupa and national symbol, surrounded by a high-walled cloister. No official page publishes current hours, closing days or admission prices for either temple, so their tickets are not in the budget. Choose by your train’s arrival: Wat Sisaket first, the riverfront if it is late, and That Luang if you add a second night.
For the outdoor day, use a lifejacket, take the briefing and ensure your insurance covers kayaking and cave tubing. The UK FCDO warns about strong currents, hidden obstacles and variable operator standards. Let the guide change the activity when river or cave conditions require it; use visitor paths at rural sites and avoid unmarked shortcuts.
Visa, eVisa and the digital immigration form
On 15 October 2026, the Lao embassy in Tokyo’s visa guidance gave Japanese nationals a visa-free stay of up to 30 days from 1 June 2025, with at least six months remaining on a Japanese passport at entry. Japan’s embassy in Laos confirmed the 30-day exemption for ordinary-passport Japanese tourists in its notice of 2 June 2025. The Lao Ministry of Foreign Affairs eVisa calculator listed other visa-free maximum stays per visit of 15 days for Luxembourg and Switzerland; 14 days for Myanmar; and 30 days for Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mongolia, the Philippines, South Korea, Russia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Check your nationality and passport type before buying a visa.
For eligible ordinary-passport holders, the Lao eVisa gives one entry and a stay of up to 30 days. Apply through laoevisa.gov.la at least five days before travel; normal processing is three working days after a complete application and payment, and it can take longer. The approval letter is valid for entry for a maximum of 60 days after you receive it. Print it and travel with the same passport used in the application, with more than 180 days remaining on arrival.
Complete the Lao Digital Immigration Form within three days before arrival and again within three days before departure when using Wattay, Luang Prabang or Pakse international airport, or Friendship Bridge I. This arrival and departure form is separate from your visa.
Luang Prabang and Wattay airports are on the official eVisa accepted-entry list. For this route, book the international arrival to Luang Prabang (LPQ) and the departure from Vientiane’s Wattay (VTE). Use the entry guide for the nationality check and the correct visa application rather than buying a visa through an advertisement.

Rail tickets, station rides and the order to book
LCR Ticket is the Laos–China Railway company’s official booking app. It provides train searches, reservations, online payment, changes and refunds. Download the app published by Laos-China Railway Company Limited.
Book Luang Prabang–Vang Vieng on 19 November 2026, day 4, and Vang Vieng–Vientiane on 21 November, day 6, for the 16–22 November week. Use LCR Ticket to select each train, class and dated fare. The MICT-commissioned Vang Vieng tourism master plan gives approximately one hour for Vientiane–Vang Vieng; that is the ride alone, separate from the road rides and boarding time. No operator or official page publishes a journey time or distance for Luang Prabang–Vang Vieng, the ticket sale window, how early to arrive at the station or the fares, so read these in the app before you pay. Keep the final night in Vientiane before the flight.
Each rail day needs two road rides: hotel to departure station, then arrival station to the next hotel. Luang Prabang’s tourism office places its station in Phik village about 15 km or 30 minutes from town. The MICT tourism master plan places Vang Vieng station around 2–3 km north-east of town. In Vientiane, use the Laos–China Railway’s Vientiane Station in Xaythany district, not Khamsavath, the separate Thailand-facing terminal. No operator or official page publishes the distance or travel time from Vientiane Station to the old quarter. Ask each hotel to arrange its station ride for your train time; in Vientiane, book through LOCA as described below.
For arrival at LPQ, Tourism Luang Prabang lists an airport taxi counter by the exit; its page checked on 15 October 2026 listed LAK50,000 per group to a hotel or town. Chanthapanya puts its own hotel 5.6 km from Wattay. Book the Vientiane station-to-hotel and hotel-to-airport rides separately through LOCA, selecting the exact station or airport and hotel; the app offers immediate or later booking and displays the fare. No fixed fare is published for these rides.
On 15 October 2026, the UK FCDO advised against all but essential travel to Xaisomboun province. Germany advised avoiding journeys into Bokeo and Sainyabuli provinces and journeys near the Cambodian border. France advised against the Myanmar border area except for compelling reasons. Our routes avoid these areas; check your own government’s advice before booking.
Kip, everyday payments and food stops
The Lao kip (LAK) is the local currency. Carry kip for everyday purchases; card acceptance is concentrated in larger hotels, restaurants and shops in the main cities. Exchange foreign currency at banks, airports or currency exchange offices. LOCA Pay offers card-funded payments through Lao QR codes.
Germany’s Foreign Office says foreign currency worth USD 10,000 or more must be declared on entry or exit, and Lao kip must not be brought into or taken out of the country.
Put a little structure around meals rather than eating only between transfers. In Luang Prabang, Tamarind’s sets give explanations of the dishes, while Manda de Laos offers a tasting lunch. Riverside Boutique Resort gives Vang Vieng a Lao lunch stop. In Vientiane, Khop Chai Deu near Nam Phou supplies the final shared dinner. These are practical stops along the route, with the dishes below taken from their own menus.

Six-night cost for two, 16–22 November 2026
For two adults sharing rooms, 16–22 November 2026, the prices published on 15 October come to US$617.26 + LAK2,284,700. The US$ amount covers the Villa Chitdara rooms, two guided days and a tasting lunch. The Inthira and Chanthapanya rooms are a separate $236 at those hotels’ own “from” rates; that room line is not part of the US$ total. The kip covers dinners, Luang Prabang sights and the airport taxi. Nothing is converted. The room types are Villa Chitdara Superior, Inthira Deluxe and Chanthapanya Superior throughout.
- Rooms for all six nights: Villa Chitdara Superior, the hotel’s own high-season rate of US$72 a night (1 October to 30 April) × 3 = US$216, with daily breakfast, 10% government tax and 7% service charge included. Inthira Deluxe, from $93 a night × 2 = $186, taxes and fees included, with free breakfast on direct bookings. Chanthapanya Superior, from $50 a night × 1 = $50; its page does not say whether taxes or breakfast are included, so they are not included here.
- Guided outings and a tasting lunch: Tiger Trail US$121 × 2 = US$242, plus 3% card fee US$7.26 = US$249.26. Wonderful Tours’ specific-page rate US$40 × 2 = US$80. Manda de Laos online-preorder tasting lunch US$36 × 2 = US$72. These priced components total US$401.26 for two; both tour lunches are included.
- Luang Prabang dinners: three Tamarind sets for two: Farmer’s Set LAK450,000 + Explorer Set LAK750,000 + Set Dinner LAK580,000 = LAK1,780,000. Their published menu does not state tax or service treatment.
- One Vang Vieng dinner: two Inthira pork laab plates LAK39,000 × 2 + tomato chilli dip and steamed vegetables LAK21,000 + two sticky-rice baskets LAK10,000 × 2 = LAK119,000, before any restaurant tax/service additions.
- Vientiane dinner: Khop Chai Deu beef or lam LAK46,000 + banana-leaf fish LAK41,000 = LAK87,000; add the menu’s 10% VAT, LAK8,700, giving LAK95,700. Rice and drinks are extra.
- Luang Prabang town sights: (Wat Xieng Thong LAK30,000 + National Museum LAK60,000 + Phousi LAK30,000) × 2 = LAK240,000. Kuang Si and Pak Ou admissions are already included in the tour.
- Luang Prabang airport taxi: the counter’s listed LAK50,000 per group, one ride on arrival.
- Total of published prices for two: US$617.26 + LAK2,284,700, which is US$401.26 + US$216 and LAK2,234,700 + LAK50,000. Shown separately and not part of the US$ total: the Inthira and Chanthapanya rooms, $186 + $50 = $236 at their own “from” rates. Not included: the two train tickets, the four station rides and the Wattay ride (no published fare), Wat Sisaket and That Luang tickets (no published price), the Riverside Boutique Resort dinner, lunches on rail days, other meals, drinks, tips, Chanthapanya taxes and breakfast, flights, visas and shopping.
Practical questions
How many days should a first Laos trip take?
Seven days and six nights make a coherent first route: Luang Prabang three nights, Vang Vieng two and Vientiane one. Add nights rather than another distant region if you want a slower pace.
Which airports should I book?
Enter through Luang Prabang (LPQ) and leave from Vientiane’s Wattay (VTE). This follows the southbound railway route without returning to the first airport.
Should I book the train or the flight first?
Choose the two rail dates and matching room nights before buying the final flight, and retain the Vientiane night before departure. Use the official app for the trains on your dates.
Can I travel visa-free?
It depends on nationality and passport type. The entry section gives the dated Ministry of Foreign Affairs nationality list and the separate eVisa and digital-form steps.
How much does the week cost for two?
The published prices for 16–22 November 2026 total US$617.26 + LAK2,284,700 for the Villa Chitdara rooms, two guided days, a tasting lunch, some dinners, Luang Prabang sights and the airport taxi. The Inthira and Chanthapanya rooms are a separate $236 at those hotels’ own “from” rates and are not part of the US$ total. Train tickets, station rides and Vientiane temple tickets have no published price and are not included.
Is Kuang Si included in this week?
Yes. The third day uses Tiger Trail’s combined Pak Ou and Kuang Si excursion, with transport, lunch and entry fees included.
Can I spend more time in Vientiane?
Add a second night if its temples and museums are a priority. The one-night stop here gives an afternoon according to train arrival, followed by departure the next day.
