Laos in 10 days: Luang Prabang, Nong Khiaw and the railway

Ten days lets you add the Nam Ou to the usual Luang Prabang–Vang Vieng–Vientiane route. Begin with temples, a royal museum and Kuang Si, then spend two nights in Nong Khiaw beneath the limestone mountains. Return to Luang Prabang for a night before joining the railway south. That return night matters: it separates the road journey from the train booking and gives the river stay room to breathe.

Suggested time
10 days / 9 nights: Luang Prabang 4, Nong Khiaw 2, Vang Vieng 2, Vientiane 1
Where to stay
Luang Prabang nights 1–3 and 6; Nong Khiaw nights 4–5; Vang Vieng nights 7–8; Vientiane night 9.
Season and timing
The World Bank and Asian Development Bank climate profile describes Laos’s rainy season as May to mid-October and the dry season as mid-October to April. These are broad seasonal patterns, so leave room for rain outside those months.

The short answer

Book nine nights: Luang Prabang three, Nong Khiaw two, Luang Prabang one, Vang Vieng two and Vientiane one, arriving at LPQ and departing from VTE on day 10. Set the road-return dates, rail legs and rooms together before buying flights. On 15 October 2026, Wat Xieng Thong cost LAK30,000 per foreign visitor and Tiger Trail’s Nong Khiaw River of Cultures day cost US$94 per person for two or three people. The priced part of the budget for two comes to US$987.90 plus LAK2,734,700, including four nights at Villa Chitdara; the other rooms, both train tickets and most local rides are not included, and Chanthapanya’s $50 room line is shown separately.

Reserve the nine nights in their actual order

The example trip runs from 16 to 25 November 2026. Reserve Luang Prabang for 16–19 November, Nong Khiaw for 19–21 November, Luang Prabang again for 21–22 November, Vang Vieng for 22–24 November and Vientiane for 24–25 November. These are five bookings across four places, with departure on the tenth day.

In Luang Prabang, use a peninsula room such as Villa Chitdara’s Superior double for both visits. In Nong Khiaw, a riverbank room near the bridge keeps the river and tour offices within the same stay; Nong Kiau Riverside is one direct-enquiry option. Riverside Boutique Resort’s Deluxe room and Chanthapanya’s Superior King or Twin in central Vientiane are the other room choices. On 15 October 2026, Chanthapanya’s own page showed rooms from $50 a night; ask each hotel for the full price of your dates for two adults before you book.

Book international arrival to Luang Prabang International Airport (LPQ) and departure from Wattay International Airport (VTE). The final Vientiane night separates the train from the flight. Our entry guide gives the nationality check and official visa channels.

For eligible ordinary-passport holders, the Lao eVisa gives one entry and a stay of up to 30 days. Apply through laoevisa.gov.la at least five days before travel; normal processing is three working days after a complete application and payment, and it can take longer. The approval letter is valid for entry for a maximum of 60 days after you receive it. Print it and travel with the same passport used in the application, with more than 180 days remaining on arrival.

Complete the Lao Digital Immigration Form within three days before arrival and again within three days before departure when using Wattay, Luang Prabang or Pakse international airport, or Friendship Bridge I. This arrival and departure form is separate from your visa.

On 15 October 2026, the UK FCDO advised against all but essential travel to Xaisomboun province. Our routes avoid these areas; check your own government’s advice before booking.

Days 1–2, 16–17 November: Luang Prabang on foot

Day 1 — arrive: transfer from LPQ to the peninsula, check in and walk by the Mekong and Nam Khan. Have a Lao dinner at Tamarind and settle into the first room. Tourism Luang Prabang’s access page read on 15 October 2026 lists an airport taxi counter by the exit and LAK50,000 per group to a hotel or town. Book the ride at the counter for your hotel. Sleep in Luang Prabang: night 1.

Day 2 — temples and royal history: start at Wat Xieng Thong, have Manda de Laos’s tasting lunch, then visit the National Museum during its afternoon session. Add Phousi for the view if you have energy for the climb; keep dinner in town. Sleep in the same room: night 2.

Wat Xieng Thong’s low, sweeping roof and glass-tile murals reward looking closely. The National Museum occupies the former royal palace; its grounds include the royal car garage and the hall containing the sacred Pha Bang statue. Phousi supplies the wider view over the town and Mekong after those indoor and courtyard visits.

Tourism Luang Prabang’s listings read on 15 October 2026 gave foreign admission at LAK30,000 for Wat Xieng Thong, LAK60,000 for the National Museum and LAK30,000 for Phousi. Wat Xieng Thong opens 06:00–18:00 daily. The museum opens 08:00–11:30 and 13:30–16:00, with ticket counters closing at 11:00 and 15:30; it closes for cleaning on the last Thursday of each month. Phousi lists 06:00–18:00, subject to seasonal changes. Cover shoulders and knees at religious sites and follow the local rules on shoes.

Day 3, 18 November: Pak Ou and Kuang Si

Give the day to Tiger Trail’s Pak Ou and Kuang Si excursion, POKS-1. The route goes by minivan to Pak Ou village and crosses the Mekong by small boat to the caves. The lower cavern contains Buddha statues and relics; a longer staircase leads to the upper cave. The trip then continues by road to Kuang Si, returning to Luang Prabang in the late afternoon. Sleep in Luang Prabang: night 3.

Kuang Si changes the scene from temple rooms to forest, cascades and pools. Swim only in designated areas. Using one guided outing brings both sites into the day without arranging a separate boat and waterfall transfer.

On 15 October 2026, Tiger Trail listed daily join-in departures starting at two people at US$121 per person. Guide, lunch, water, entry fees, road transport, boat fees, taxes and licence are included. For two, US$242 plus its 3% card fee is US$249.26. Book the named tour directly and arrange the early-morning meeting time and pickup point. The stair access makes this a walking day as well as a minivan journey.

Have dinner back in town and pack for Nong Khiaw. Take only the excursions you can comfortably manage; the river day there is a separate experience rather than a reason to add more sightseeing tonight.

Days 4–5, 19–20 November: Nong Khiaw and the Nam Ou

Day 4 — travel by road: leave Luang Prabang for Nong Khiaw, check into the riverside room and walk to the bridge. Tourism Luang Prabang describes the east bank as an accommodation area and the west bank as the main cluster of travel businesses. Look along the Nam Ou at the boats below and limestone peaks beyond; this arrival afternoon needs no viewpoint climb. Sleep in Nong Khiaw: night 4 of the trip.

For 19 November’s outward journey and 21 November’s return, book Tanva Mekong Cruises’ public-minivan service through its own website. Its page, checked on 15 October 2026, lists Luang Prabang–Nong Khiaw at 152 km and US$14 per person, including hotel pickup, and the same distance, price and pickup for Nong Khiaw–Luang Prabang. Two people pay US$28 each way, US$56 return. Tanva publishes no departure times and does not name the carrying company, so ask for your pickup time when you book. Tourism Luang Prabang’s Nong Khiaw page (undated, no fares) lists a minivan from Luang Prabang at 09:30, public buses from the Northern Bus Station at 09:00, 11:00 and 14:00, and departures from Nong Khiaw to Luang Prabang at 09:00, 11:00 and 14:00. Nong Kiau Riverside says Luang Prabang hotel receptions sell minivan and bus tickets, usually with a tuk-tuk to the Northern Bus Station. No operator or official page publishes the journey time, so treat both days as road-travel days.

Day 5 — River of Cultures: meet Tiger Trail at its Nong Khiaw office for NK4V-1. A tuk-tuk takes you to the pier, then a private longtail boat visits Ban Houay Hoy, Ban Sop Kong, Ban Sop Chem and Muang Ngoi. The guide introduces Lao and Khmu village life, farming and weaving. At Ban Sop Chem, natural dyes and textile patterns are part of the visit; Muang Ngoi provides the Lao picnic lunch and time beside the river. Return to the same Nong Khiaw room: night 5.

Tiger Trail describes approximately four hours by boat and two hours walking, with a gentle rice-field walk near Muang Ngoi as a choice during the stop. The final boat leg returns to Nong Khiaw, followed by a tuk-tuk to your guesthouse. It is a local return outing; it does not transport you from or back to Luang Prabang.

On 15 October 2026, the private two-to-three-person option was US$94 per person: US$188 for two, or US$193.64 with the 3% card fee. A local guide, all boat and tuk-tuk transfers, Lao picnic lunch, fruit, water and government taxes are included. Book that option on Tiger Trail’s page and arrange the office meeting time and pier details. Weather can change the river itinerary; its terms permit safety changes and exclude compensation for adverse-weather events beyond its control.

Keep to the guide’s village visits and marked visitor paths; unexploded ordnance makes rural shortcuts dangerous. Nong Kiau Riverside has its own restaurant; ask the lodge for its breakfast and meal prices when you book. Nong Khiaw meals and breakfasts are not included in the budget.

Days 6–7, 21–22 November: return to town, then take the train

Day 6 — back to Luang Prabang: breakfast and the booked road return, then check into the separate one-night reservation. Use the remaining afternoon for a river walk, a rest and a final Tamarind dinner. Sleep in Luang Prabang: night 6, bringing the city total to four. This night is the buffer between Nong Khiaw’s road journey and the southbound railway.

Day 7 — to Vang Vieng: travel from the hotel to Luang Prabang Railway Station, take your booked Laos–China Railway service to Vang Vieng and continue by road to the hotel. Keep the available afternoon for the Nam Song riverbank and dinner at Riverside Boutique Resort. Sleep in Vang Vieng: night 7, the first of two.

LCR Ticket is the Laos–China Railway company’s official booking app. It provides train searches, reservations, online payment, changes and refunds. Download the app published by Laos-China Railway Company Limited.

Book Luang Prabang–Vang Vieng for 22 November and Vang Vieng–Vientiane for 24 November in LCR Ticket. The railway company publishes no fare table, full timetable, sale window, ID rule or baggage allowance outside the app, so check these on the ticket screen before you pay. Both train tickets are not included in the budget.

Tourism Luang Prabang places its station in Phik village about 15 km or 30 minutes from town. Tanva advertises train-station transfers but publishes no fare, so ask it for the hotel-to-station price and pickup time. At Vang Vieng, the tourism master plan prepared for the Lao Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism places the station about 2–3 km north-east of town. Riverside Boutique Resort’s own station pickup, checked on 15 October 2026, is US$19 per trip for up to six passengers including luggage. Book its transfer form with your train and Deluxe reservation. This fare covers station to Riverside only; ask Riverside for the return ride to the station.

Day 8, 23 November: Vang Vieng’s river and karst

The Nam Song and limestone scenery are the reason for the two-night stop. Take Wonderful Tours’ Full-Day River Adventure: Kayaking, Cave Tubing & Blue Lagoon, code VV-KCBL02, for two people. Sleep in Vang Vieng again: night 8.

Wonderful Tours’ price list shows VV-KCBL02 at 09:00–17:00: a full day of kayaking, cave tubing and a Blue Lagoon visit. Book it for 23 November through the operator’s Book Now form and ask for the meeting point.

The price list, checked on 15 October 2026, shows VV-KCBL02 at US$55 per person for a party of two: US$110 for the pair. It does not say whether lunch is included, so the budget leaves lunch out.

Wear a lifejacket, take the briefing and ensure your insurance covers the activities. The UK FCDO warns about strong currents, hidden obstacles and variable operator standards. Let the guide change the river or cave activity with conditions. If you prefer a quiet day, keep to the riverbank and town instead and take the US$110 out of the budget.

Finish with a Lao dinner at Inthira Vang Vieng’s restaurant. Its linked menu offers pork laab with sticky rice and a tomato chilli dip with steamed vegetables; the budget counts this as the second Vang Vieng dinner.

Days 9–10, 24–25 November: Vientiane, then Wattay

Day 9 — rail to the capital: take the Vang Vieng–Vientiane service on 24 November, with a ride from your hotel to Vang Vieng station and a ride from Vientiane station to your hotel. For the capital arrival, ask for a LOCA app quote for the railway station to Ban Mixay. Match the station on the train ticket. Sleep in central Vientiane: night 9.

Make Wat Sisaket the capital visit if the train arrival leaves time. Its sanctuary wall paintings tell a story of the Buddha’s earlier life. No official page we could read publishes its hours or admission, so ask at the gate; its ticket is not included in the budget. Pha That Luang, the angular stupa inside a high-walled cloister, is an optional second sight for a longer stay.

Have dinner at Khop Chai Deu near Nam Phou, then walk by the Mekong if the evening allows. Its menu’s banana-leaf fish and beef or lam make the shared dinner in the budget. The five dishes below give other meals on this route a little variety.

Day 10 — depart: breakfast, check out and travel to Wattay International Airport (VTE). Chanthapanya lists its own distance from Wattay at 5.6 km. No operator or official page publishes a fare or journey time for this ride, so book a LOCA ride from the Ban Mixay hotel to Wattay and use the fare the app shows. There is no tenth hotel night, no Nong Khiaw road transfer and no intercity train to catch before the flight.

The two rail days need four station rides: Luang Prabang hotel to station through Tanva, Vang Vieng station to Riverside at the published US$19, Riverside to Vang Vieng station by separate quote, and Vientiane station to Ban Mixay by app quote. The Wattay ride is a fifth booking. Complete the departure Digital Immigration Form within its stated window in the entry section.

Nine-night cost for two, 16–25 November 2026

The budget below is for two adults travelling 16–25 November 2026 and sharing rooms. It adds up the amounts that hotels, operators and restaurants publish: US$987.90 + LAK2,734,700. The other rooms, both train tickets and the rides listed under “Not included” are left out because no published price covers them. Dollars and kip are kept separate, with no exchange conversion.

Rooms: Villa Chitdara Superior for 16–19 and 21–22 November includes daily breakfast, 10% government tax and 7% service charge, at the hotel’s own high-season rate of US$72 a night: 4 nights × US$72 = US$288, which is in the total. Nong Kiau Riverside (19–21 November) shows no rate online; contact it directly for two adults. Riverside Boutique Resort Deluxe (22–24 November) takes two adults in its existing bedding and publishes no room price. Chanthapanya Superior (24–25 November) is shown from $50 a night on the hotel’s own page. Chanthapanya’s page shows a bare “$” with no currency named, so its $50 for one night is a separate room line and is not part of the US$ total. Breakfast, tax and service are not included for these three hotels, and the Nong Kiau Riverside and Riverside Boutique nights have no published rate and are not in the total.

Tamarind’s, Manda’s and Inthira’s menu pages state no tax or service, so those meals are at menu prices. The Khop Chai Deu Vientiane menu adds 10% VAT, which is in the total. Tell restaurants and guides about dietary restrictions before ordering: the meals include meat, fish, coconut and sesame.

  • Three guided days, tasting lunch and priced road legs: US$699.90. Pak Ou–Kuang Si: US$121 × 2 × 1.03 card fee = US$249.26. River of Cultures, private two-to-three-person rate: US$94 × 2 × 1.03 = US$193.64. Wonderful Tours VV-KCBL02: US$55 × 2 = US$110. Manda online-preorder tasting lunch: US$36 × 2 = US$72. Tanva public minivans: US$14 × 2 people × 2 directions = US$56. Riverside’s station-to-resort pickup: US$19 per trip. The two Tiger Trail outings include lunch.
  • Villa Chitdara Superior, 4 nights: US$288. US$72 high-season (1 October–30 April) × 4 nights, with breakfast, tax and service included. Chanthapanya Superior, 1 night: $50 at the hotel’s own “from” rate, shown on its own line; it is not part of the US$ total.
  • Four Luang Prabang dinners: LAK2,230,000. Tamarind’s two-person Farmer’s Set LAK450,000 on days 1 and 6, Explorer Set LAK750,000 on day 2 and Set Dinner LAK580,000 on day 3. These are shared set menus, not single portions.
  • One Vang Vieng dinner: LAK119,000. Inthira’s two pork laab plates, LAK39,000 × 2; tomato chilli dip with vegetables, LAK21,000; and two sticky-rice baskets, LAK10,000 × 2. The Riverside Boutique Resort dinner on day 7 is extra.
  • Vientiane dinner: LAK95,700. Khop Chai Deu beef or lam LAK46,000 + banana-leaf fish LAK41,000 = LAK87,000; plus 10% VAT, LAK8,700. Rice and drinks are extra.
  • Town admissions and arrival taxi: LAK290,000. Wat Xieng Thong LAK30,000 + National Museum LAK60,000 + Phousi LAK30,000, all × 2 = LAK240,000. Add the LPQ arrival-taxi listing at LAK50,000 per group. Pak Ou and Kuang Si admissions are already in the tour.
  • Arithmetic: US$249.26 + US$193.64 + US$110 + US$72 + US$56 + US$19 = US$699.90; US$699.90 + US$288 = US$987.90; LAK2,230,000 + LAK119,000 + LAK95,700 + LAK290,000 = LAK2,734,700.
  • Not included, listed once: the Nong Kiau Riverside, Riverside Boutique and Chanthapanya nights (three room nights) and their breakfasts, taxes and service; both train tickets; the Luang Prabang hotel-to-station, Riverside-to-station, Vientiane station-to-hotel and Wattay rides; Wat Sisaket admission; lunch with the Vang Vieng outing; Nong Khiaw dinners and breakfasts; the Riverside Boutique Resort dinner; lunches on road days 4 and 6 and rail days 7 and 9; day 1 breakfast and lunch and day 10 lunch and dinner; rice, drinks and snacks; Vang Vieng entrance charges outside the outing price; flights, visas, tips and insurance.

Practical questions

How many nights are there in ten days?

Nine: three Luang Prabang nights, two Nong Khiaw nights, one more Luang Prabang night, two Vang Vieng nights and one Vientiane night. Departure is on day 10.

Why return to Luang Prabang for another night?

Nong Khiaw is a road return from Luang Prabang in this itinerary. The extra city night separates that journey from the southbound train, without adding a tenth night.

Does the Nong Khiaw boat tour include the Luang Prabang transfer?

No. River of Cultures meets in Nong Khiaw, includes local tuk-tuks and boat travel and returns to your Nong Khiaw guesthouse. Both Luang Prabang road legs are separate bookings.

Which train tickets do I need?

Luang Prabang–Vang Vieng on day 7 and Vang Vieng–Vientiane on day 9. Book them in the railway’s LCR Ticket app for your dates, and arrange the four station rides separately.

Can I replace the Vang Vieng adventure day?

Yes. Stay by the Nam Song and explore town if you prefer a quiet day. Take the US$110 outing out of the budget and add your own meals and local rides.

Is US$987.90 plus LAK2,734,700 the whole cost?

No. It covers four nights at Villa Chitdara, the three guided days, the Manda tasting lunch, the Tanva road return, Riverside’s station pickup, town admissions, the airport taxi and six dinners. Chanthapanya’s $50 room line is separate. The other rooms, both train tickets, the other station and Wattay rides and the meals listed as not included are extra.
