Pakse and the Bolaven Plateau · Champasak
Pakse and Bolaven: three nights for waterfalls and coffee
Pakse is the arrival point; the Bolaven Plateau is where this short stay unfolds. Tad Fane drops into a forested gorge, Tad Yuang spreads into twin torrents, and coffee plantations give the journey a different pace between waterfalls. Spend three nights together on the plateau road and visit the waterfalls and coffee country on separate days. Vat Phou is a separate heritage visit, with its own day and a different direction of travel.

- Suggested time
- 4 days / 3 nights on the Bolaven Plateau
- Where to stay
- Three nights on the Paksong road, Bolaven Plateau, with Pakse International Airport as the gateway
- Season and timing
- The World Bank and Asian Development Bank climate profile describes Laos’s rainy season as May to mid-October and the dry season as mid-October to April. These are broad seasonal patterns, so leave room for rain outside those months.
The short answer
Book three nights on the Bolaven Plateau, on the Paksong road east of Pakse. Arrange the airport transfers and two outing days first, then the room. On 15 October 2026, Sabaidee Valley listed its two-person Deluxe Double villa from US$63 a night, the hotel’s own rate, with breakfast; three nights come to US$189. Its menu prices a shared pork-larb, papaya-salad and rice dinner at LAK 158,000. Transfers, outings, admissions, taxes and other meals are not included. Give one day to Tad Fane and Tad Yuang and another to the Sinouk coffee plantation, returning to the same room each night.
Three nights together on the plateau road
Pakse International Airport (PKZ) is the gateway to this short stay. Head to the plateau room on arrival and keep all three nights together. Separate waterfall and plantation days give the stay its shape without repacking between outings.
Sabaidee Valley gives a concrete room to compare with other plateau options. Its own address is Km 33, 16E Road, Paksong, Champasak, on the road corridor east of Pakse. Its Deluxe Double villa accommodates two people in one double bed, with breakfast, air conditioning and an outdoor rain shower. Choose this for the plantation and waterfall days, with a driver for the outings.
On 15 October 2026, the hotel’s own room page listed this room from US$63 a night, with breakfast included. The property also publishes a seasonal rate table, described as guidance, with different prices; ask the hotel for a quote for your dates. The budget below uses the room-page rate. Taxes are not included.
Central Pakse is an alternative for a city evening or an extra heritage day. It adds a return to the city after plateau outings, so it is not the base for the three-night plan below. Keep a Pakse stay separate if you extend the trip to Vat Phou.
A four-day stay without a long loop
Keep the road journeys short enough to spend time at the places you came to see. The plan below uses one plateau base between arrival and departure at PKZ. A private driver is the useful choice for luggage, waiting during waterfall and plantation visits, and the return airport pickup.
Bolaven Tours, a Pakse operator, takes airport transfers and custom tours on request through its enquiry form. Send the dates, two travellers, Sabaidee Valley’s Km 33 address, flight details and the two outing days in one enquiry, and ask for one price covering PKZ–Sabaidee Valley–PKZ and both outing days, with pickup times and what it includes. It publishes no fare for the airport or plateau transfer. No operator or official page publishes the driving time from the airport to the plateau or on to Sinouk, so agree pickup times with the driver.
Published alternative from a Pakse hotel: Bolaven Tours’ one-day circuit visits Tad Fane, Tad Yuang, KM40 Coffee Farm and Tad Champee, returning to Pakse in the afternoon. Its rates checked on 15 October 2026 are US$55 per tuk tuk for up to four people or US$90 per minivan for up to six. One vehicle accommodates the two adults in this guide. The price includes the driver, fuel, tolls and parking; meals, admission tickets and accommodation are extra, with a guide available on request. Book through the operator’s enquiry form. It starts and ends in Pakse, so it suits a Pakse stay better than the plateau base.
Germany’s Foreign Office advised avoiding journeys near the Cambodian border on 15 October 2026. This stay keeps to Pakse and the plateau, with any optional Vat Phou outing approaching and returning from the north. Check your own government’s advice before booking.
- Day 1 — Arrive at PKZ: include a meal stop at Samlee’s Garden in Pakse in the driver booking, then continue to the plateau room. Its afternoon service starts at 15:00, which suits the Saturday arrival plan. Night: Bolaven Plateau.
- Day 2 — Waterfalls: visit Tad Fane and Tad Yuang, then return to the same room. Night: Bolaven Plateau.
- Day 3 — Coffee country: visit Sinouk’s plantation on the Paksong–Thateng road, allowing time among the coffee plants rather than adding a distant loop. Night: Bolaven Plateau.
- Day 4 — Return to the airport: make this a transfer day. With a morning flight, arrange an early pickup from the plateau; a sightseeing stop belongs on another day.

Tad Fane and Tad Yuang: two different waterfall visits
Tad Fane is the gorge view. The national tourism authority describes the Champi and Pak Koot rivers coming together here, with two branches falling 120 metres over steep cliffs. Its listing places the site within Dong Houa Sao National Protected Area, at Ban Lak 38 along Route 23 towards Paksong. That road location makes it a useful first stop on the waterfall day.
Tad Yuang has a different shape: twin torrents fall about 40 metres into jungle. The two waterfalls are worth treating as separate visits, with time to look at each landscape. Keep to visitor paths and barriers; this plan is for viewing the waterfalls, without a swimming or zipline booking.
No authority or operator publishes current hours or admission charges for Tad Fane, Tad Yuang or the Sinouk walk-in visit, so they are not in the budget. The Bolaven Tours day-trip price includes none of these admissions.
Keep the waterfall visits on day 2 and coffee on day 3. This leaves a full plateau day if rain slows the first outing, while retaining the same three-night base.
Sinouk: visit a producer, not just a coffee counter
Sinouk Coffee Plantation is on the Paksong–Thateng road at Lak Khao village. The producer describes Arabica cultivation and a community that works and lives on the plantation, and explicitly welcomes tour groups, walk-in visitors and resort guests. A walk here puts the coffee trees and the agricultural setting beside the cup you drink.
There are two different ways to visit. The plantation page welcomes walk-ins, while the company’s guided Bolaven coffee-tour page restricts those tours to Sinouk Coffee Resort customers and starts them at the resort. That guided experience combines a plantation walk with a beginner-friendly cupping session; it is not an externally bookable day tour for guests staying elsewhere.
For this stay, choose the plantation’s walk-in option as the coffee-day stop. The producer says the harvest season runs from October to November, when farmers line up bags of picked cherries in the evening light. The plan does not promise a hands-on harvest or access to processing facilities.
Use the plantation address on the producer’s page when arranging the stop. Sinouk also has a roastery and experiences in Vientiane, which are separate places and do not belong in this southern stay.

Vat Phou: a separate heritage day from Pakse
Vat Phou changes the subject from coffee and forest to a designed sacred landscape. UNESCO describes temples, shrines and waterworks aligned from mountain top to river bank, with development from the 5th to 15th centuries. The heritage office describes the main temple climbing the slope from the plain to a sanctuary at the foot of a cliff and sacred spring.
The office’s visitor information, checked on 15 October 2026, lists the site at 08:00–17:00 and the museum at 08:00–16:30. Admission for the site and museum is LAK 50,000 for foreigners or LAK 20,000 for Lao visitors, includes the electric-car service and is valid for the whole day. Monks, children under 10 and disabled visitors enter free.
The office separately lists entry outside normal hours at LAK 55,000 for foreigners or LAK 25,000 for Lao visitors. It says tickets can be bought at the main gate from 06:00 to 08:00 and from 16:30 to 18:00. These ticket-sale windows do not extend the museum’s hours.
Allow a separate day based in Pakse if this is a priority, approaching and returning from the north. Arrange that return road trip before adding a Pakse night; the three-night plan and budget below cover the plateau stay only. Champasak’s local tourism project places the district along the Mekong south of Pakse, with rice fields and villages beyond the temple.
Lao dishes and what the budget covers
Sabaidee Valley Restaurant is a practical meal stop on the plateau road as well as the restaurant for the three-night base. Its own page lists daily service at 09:00–21:00, with last orders at 20:30. Choose the Lao dishes in the food box; the restaurant also serves Thai and Western food.
On arrival, Samlee’s Garden on Mekong Riverside Road in Pakse adds a distinct savoury choice: Lao-style aubergine. Its afternoon service is 15:00–22:00 except Wednesday, when it opens for breakfast only. Include the Pakse meal stop in the airport transfer arrangement; the restaurant is not at the plateau hotel.
Budget for two adults sharing one room, from prices published on 15 October 2026: the amounts below cover the three-night plateau stay. The dollar and kip amounts are kept separate.
Plateau room: three nights in Sabaidee Valley’s two-person Deluxe Double villa at the hotel’s own rate of US$63 a night give US$189. Breakfast is included. This is the hotel’s dated from-rate, not a quote for your dates; taxes are not included.
One plateau dinner: the restaurant’s menu lists small pork larb at LAK 86,000, Lao papaya salad at LAK 50,000 and steamed rice at LAK 11,000 per plate. One larb, one salad and two rice plates give LAK 158,000 for two. This prices that one order, not a daily meal allowance. The menu does not state whether taxes or service are added.
Not included: the arrival meal in Pakse; all other lunches, dinners and drinks; the airport transfers and both outings (no fare is published for them); coffee and any plantation charge; Tad Fane, Tad Yuang and Sinouk admissions (none is published); room and meal taxes and service charges; flights and any visa fee. The US$55 tuk tuk or US$90 minivan rate is for a different arrangement, a day trip from a Pakse hotel, and is not part of this budget. An extra Vat Phou day adds its transport, accommodation and meals to the LAK 50,000 foreigner admission.

Make time for the local food
What to eat and where to look
Larb (laap)
The national tourism authority describes Lao larb through fresh herbs and toasted rice powder. Sabaidee Valley’s menu offers spicy minced pork salad in Lao style, as well as a fish version.
- Where to look
- Sabaidee Valley Restaurant, Km 33 on the Paksong road.
- Fit it into your day
- Share the small pork larb at a plateau dinner, with rice and papaya salad.
Tell the restaurant about allergies and ingredients you avoid before ordering.
Tam mak hoong
Lao-style papaya salad has the savoury flavour of fermented fish sauce, with chilli and sourness. It is a separate Lao-style item on Sabaidee Valley’s menu.
- Where to look
- Sabaidee Valley Restaurant, at the same plateau base.
- Fit it into your day
- A contrasting salad beside larb and rice at dinner.
Lao-style aubergine
A savoury aubergine dish for an arrival-day meal by the Mekong. Samlee’s Garden presents it as a Lao-style dish in its own food selection.
- Where to look
- Samlee’s Garden, Mekong Riverside Road, Pakse.
- Fit it into your day
- The arrival-day Pakse meal before the transfer continues to the plateau; afternoon service starts at 15:00 and is closed on Wednesday evenings.
Bolaven Arabica coffee
Sinouk grows Arabica on its Bolaven plantation. The producer visit gives the coffee trees a place in the day, rather than making coffee only a souvenir purchase.
- Where to look
- Sinouk Coffee Plantation, Lak Khao village on the Paksong–Thateng road.
- Fit it into your day
- A coffee stop during the plantation day, after breakfast at the plateau room.
Pakse flights, arrival documents and the return pickup
For 25 October 2026–27 March 2027, Lao Airlines lists QV516 from Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) at 12:00 to Pakse (PKZ) at 13:35 on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. QV515 returns from PKZ at 09:45 to SGN at 11:20 on the same days. Both scheduled flights take 1 hour 35 minutes. Buy the actual date on Lao Airlines’ website and use the fare conditions shown with the ticket for baggage and changes.
A Saturday arrival and Tuesday departure fit the three-night stay. A Tuesday arrival and Saturday departure would mean four nights, so match the flight days to the nights before booking. The flight fare is additional to the local stay budget.
Complete the Lao Digital Immigration Form within three days before arrival and again within three days before departure when using Wattay, Luang Prabang or Pakse international airport, or Friendship Bridge I. This arrival and departure form is separate from your visa.
Pakse International Airport is on the official eVisa entry-point list. The entry guide explains eligibility, passport validity and the printed approval letter. Send the flight details and plateau address to the driver so that both airport journeys connect with the same base.
Practical questions
How many nights do Pakse and Bolaven need?
Use three nights together on the plateau road for the waterfall-and-coffee stay. Keep a separate day and extra Pakse night for Vat Phou if you want the heritage visit.
Can I fly directly to Pakse from Ho Chi Minh City?
Lao Airlines lists the direct route on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday for 25 October 2026–27 March 2027. Match the flight days to your hotel nights; some return combinations require an extra night.
Can I join Sinouk’s guided coffee tour from another hotel?
Its guided Bolaven tour is restricted to Sinouk Coffee Resort customers. The plantation itself welcomes walk-in visitors, which is the option used in this plan.
Should I stay in Pakse for every night?
A city base is useful for a city evening and a separate Vat Phou day. For the waterfall-and-coffee stay here, three nights on the plateau road avoid returning to Pakse after each outing.
What does the budget for two include?
Three plateau room nights with breakfast (US$189) and one shared dinner (LAK 158,000). Airport and outing transport, admissions, taxes, other meals and flights are not included.
