Laos transport: railway, stations, flights and border crossings

The railway makes Luang Prabang, Vang Vieng and Vientiane a sensible first route through Laos. The important booking is the complete journey: a train seat plus a car to and from the station, with a final hotel night before the flight home. Nong Khiaw needs a road return from Luang Prabang; the Bolaven Plateau belongs to a separate stay reached through Pakse. Start with the rail spine, then add an extension only when its transport fits.

Suggested time
7 days / 6 nights: Luang Prabang 3, Vang Vieng 2, Vientiane 1
Where to stay
Luang Prabang peninsula for nights 1–3; central Vang Vieng for nights 4–5; Vientiane old quarter for night 6
Season and timing
The World Bank and Asian Development Bank climate profile describes Laos’s rainy season as May to mid-October and the dry season as mid-October to April. These are broad seasonal patterns, so leave room for rain outside those months.

The short answer

Book six nights: three in Luang Prabang, two in Vang Vieng and one in Vientiane, arriving at Luang Prabang (LPQ) and leaving from Wattay (VTE) on day 7. Book the two rail legs first, then the station pickups. Checked on 15 October 2026, the published transport amounts for two adults come to US$79 plus LAK50,000: Tanva’s Kuang Si outing (2 × US$30), Riverside Boutique Resort’s Vang Vieng station pickup (US$19 per trip) and the airport taxi listed by Tourism Luang Prabang (LAK50,000 per group). Train fares, the other station rides and the Wattay ride have no published price and are not included.

A week that moves south, with the last night in the capital

Use the first three nights for Luang Prabang’s temple streets and Kuang Si, then move to Vang Vieng for limestone mountains and a full day between transfers. Finish with one night in Vientiane rather than connecting a train arrival straight to an international flight. Luang Prabang’s peninsula gives you the heritage town on foot; central Vang Vieng keeps meals near the room; Vientiane’s old quarter suits the final evening.

For room enquiries, compare a Superior double at Villa Chitdara in Luang Prabang, two nights at Riverside Boutique Resort in Vang Vieng, and a Superior King at Chanthapanya Hotel in Vientiane. These are separate hotel bookings, not a package. Keep the town addresses on your pickups rather than using the city name alone.

  • Day 1: arrive at LPQ, transfer to the Luang Prabang peninsula and settle in. Night: Luang Prabang.
  • Day 2: Wat Xieng Thong and the former Royal Palace’s National Museum, with Phousi for the view over the Mekong and the town. Night: Luang Prabang.
  • Day 3: Kuang Si’s cascades and designated swimming pools, then return to the same room. Night: Luang Prabang.
  • Day 4: car to Luang Prabang Railway Station, train to Vang Vieng Railway Station, then a road pickup to your hotel. Night: Vang Vieng.
  • Day 5: a full day in Vang Vieng for the river and limestone landscape. Choose any paid outing after settling its pickup and price locally. Night: Vang Vieng.
  • Day 6: car to Vang Vieng Railway Station, train to the Laos–China Railway’s Vientiane Station, then transfer to the old quarter. Night: Vientiane.
  • Day 7: the capital’s temple museums if flight time permits, then a separate transfer to Wattay International Airport (VTE).

Book the railway through its own app

LCR Ticket is the Laos–China Railway company’s official booking app. It provides train searches, reservations, online payment, changes and refunds. Download the app published by Laos-China Railway Company Limited.

The publisher’s Apple listing includes email registration and login. Create the account, search Luang Prabang → Vang Vieng for day 4 and Vang Vieng → Vientiane for day 6, select the train and passenger details, and review the final price before payment. Save the booking details with the date, train and station names for the driver.

In the railway company’s schedule announced on 28 September 2026, C95 leaves Boten at 08:00 and reaches Vientiane at 11:47, calling at Nateuy, Xay, Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng. C95 runs on Tuesdays and Fridays to Mondays. The return C96 leaves Vientiane at 14:05 and reaches Boten at 18:32 on Thursdays and Fridays to Mondays. Check LCR Ticket for your travel date.

Tourism Laos’s 1 April 2026 fare report lists Vientiane–Luang Prabang adult second class at LAK360,000, first class at LAK569,000 and business class at LAK1,063,000. That is the through fare. This plan breaks the journey at Vang Vieng, so it needs two separate tickets.

The Vang Vieng tourism master plan prepared for the Lao Ministry of Information, Tourism and Culture gives approximately one hour for Vientiane–Vang Vieng by rail. In LCR Ticket, search Luang Prabang → Vang Vieng for 19 November and Vang Vieng → Vientiane for 21 November for the model week. No operator or official page publishes a journey time or distance for Luang Prabang–Vang Vieng; LCR Ticket shows each train’s times. No official page gives a fare for either leg, the ticket sale window, accepted ID, how early to arrive at the station, or baggage and security rules, so the two tickets are not included in the budget below. Read those conditions in the app before you pay.

Airports and railway stations: book the road journeys too

Luang Prabang arrival: Tourism Luang Prabang places LPQ 4 km from the centre. On 15 October 2026 its access page listed an airport taxi at LAK50,000 per group to a hotel or town, with the ticket counter by the exit; use the counter’s current quote when you arrive. LOCA also offers airport pickups booked through its app, where the fare appears before the ride.

Luang Prabang railway departure: the provincial tourism office places the Laos–China Railway station in Phik Village, about 15 km from town, a road journey of about 30 minutes. Arrange the hotel pickup for your actual train and leave time for station boarding. Tanva Mekong Cruises offers train-station transfers through its own booking page, WhatsApp or email; ask for the Luang Prabang hotel-to-station journey. It publishes no fare for this transfer, so it is not included in the budget.

Vang Vieng: the tourism master plan places the railway station around 2–3 km north-east of town. No official page gives a road time. For the arrival, Riverside Boutique Resort offers a private 4WD or minivan station pickup at US$19 per trip for up to six passengers, luggage included. Reserve through its transfers form or info@riversidevangvieng.com, giving the train and arrival time. The resort publishes no price for the ride back to the station, so ask for it when you book; it is not included in the budget.

Vientiane: use the Laos–China Railway’s Vientiane Station in Xaythany district for the domestic train from Vang Vieng. Khamsavath is the separate Thailand-facing terminal on the eVisa port list. No official page gives the distance or travel time from the station to the old quarter. Book the station-to-Chanthapanya Hotel, Ban Mixay ride in LOCA, selecting that exact railway station; the app shows the fare before you confirm, and the driver sends pickup instructions for the meeting point.

Wattay departure: Chanthapanya lists 5.6 km between its old-quarter hotel and Wattay Airport. Book hotel → VTE in LOCA, which accepts international phone numbers, as a separate ride from the station transfer, and allow time before the check-in deadline. LOCA shows the fare in the app; no fixed fare is published, so it is not included in the budget.

Kuang Si return on day 3: Tanva’s public cruise/minivan outing lists 11:00 departure and 15:00 return, at US$30 per person, including the river cruise, minivan, local taxes and pickup from and return to your hotel. Book directly through Tanva’s website, WhatsApp or email, and ask whether the park admission is included.

Bangkok, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City: choose the correct season

Lao Airlines publishes different summer and winter timetables. The times below are local and the airline can change them. Book the flight on the airline’s website for the travel date; fares and baggage depend on the ticket selected.

For travel through 24 October 2026, Lao Airlines lists a daily Hanoi–Vientiane flight taking 1 hour and a daily Ho Chi Minh City–Vientiane flight taking 1 hour 35 minutes. From Bangkok Suvarnabhumi, its evening flight takes 1 hour 20 minutes daily; the morning flight takes 1 hour 10 minutes on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.

The summer sheet, effective 29 March–24 October 2026, gives Hanoi → Vientiane as QV312, 16:20–17:20; Ho Chi Minh City → Vientiane as QV4516, 16:10–17:45; and Bangkok Suvarnabhumi → Vientiane as QV446, 20:50–22:10, plus QV442, 09:40–10:50 on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.

For 25 October 2026–27 March 2027, Lao Airlines lists Bangkok Suvarnabhumi–Vientiane twice daily, taking 1 hour 20 minutes. Hanoi–Vientiane takes 1 hour 10 minutes daily, and Hanoi–Luang Prabang takes 1 hour 10 minutes daily. From Ho Chi Minh City, the airline lists Pakse on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, taking 1 hour 35 minutes, with onward service to Vientiane via Pakse taking 3 hours 35 minutes. Bangkok–Luang Prabang takes 2 hours on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.

On the winter sheet, Bangkok Suvarnabhumi → Vientiane is QV442, 09:55–11:15, and QV446, 20:50–22:10. Hanoi → Vientiane is QV312, 16:40–17:50. For this guide’s Luang Prabang arrival, Hanoi → Luang Prabang is QV314, 19:15–20:25 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, or 18:50–20:00 on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. Bangkok → Luang Prabang is QV634, 10:20–12:20 on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.

For the trip home in that winter period, Vientiane → Bangkok is QV441, 07:35–08:55, or QV445, 18:25–19:35, daily; Vientiane → Hanoi is QV311, 14:40–15:50, daily. Vientiane → Ho Chi Minh City is QV515 via Pakse, 07:30–11:20, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Compare these flights with the last night in Vientiane rather than adding a domestic connection on departure day.

Nong Khiaw by road; Pakse and the Bolaven Plateau by air and car

On 15 October 2026, the UK FCDO advised against all but essential travel to Xaisomboun province. Germany advised avoiding journeys into Bokeo and Sainyabuli provinces and journeys near the Cambodian border. France advised against the Myanmar border area except for compelling reasons. Our routes avoid these areas; check your own government’s advice before booking.

Nong Khiaw is a road extension from Luang Prabang, not a railway stop. Tanva Mekong Cruises sells public minivan transfers in both directions at US$14 per person each way, listing 152 km for each journey and hotel pickup included. Two adults’ return bookings therefore model 4 × US$14 = US$56, separate from this week. Book directly through its taxi page, tanvamekong@gmail.com or +856 20 5161 6549; ask for the departure time, baggage allowance and arrival drop-off when you book. Return to Luang Prabang before the southbound trains.

For a separate southern stay, fly to Pakse (PKZ) and arrange a car and driver for the Bolaven Plateau. In Lao Airlines’ 25 October 2026–27 March 2027 timetable, QV516 flies Ho Chi Minh City → Pakse 12:00–13:35 on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday; the return QV515 is 09:45–11:20 on those days. The corresponding Ho Chi Minh City–Vientiane service calls at Pakse; it is not a nonstop capital flight.

The same winter timetable lists daily Vientiane–Pakse QV305 at 08:00–09:00 and QV303 at 12:00–13:00; daily returns are QV306 at 09:50–10:50 and QV304 at 13:40–14:40. On Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, QV515 runs Vientiane–Pakse at 07:30–08:45, QV516 returns at 14:20–15:35, QV513 runs Luang Prabang–Pakse at 08:30–10:10 and QV514 returns at 14:35–16:15. These are named flights in the dated schedule, not a guarantee of seats or a fare quote.

For the plateau road day, the national tourism office places Tad Fane at Ban Lak 38, kilometre 38 on Route 23 towards Paksong. Bolaven Tours’ one-day circuit picks up at a Pakse hotel, visits Tad Fane and Tad Yuang with a kilometre-40 coffee stop, and returns to the hotel in the afternoon. Its private tuk-tuk costs US$55 per vehicle for up to four, or minivan US$90 for up to six. Vehicle, driver, fuel, tolls and parking are included; meals, admissions and a guide are additional. Book its own form or WhatsApp +856 20 9265 1210, specifying the one-day Pakse return and pickup hour. This day is outside the northern week and its price is not part of the budget above.

Land entry: the bridge number and visa must match

Choose an entry point that accepts your visa: the official eVisa list includes Wattay, Luang Prabang and Pakse international airports, Friendship Bridges I and II, Boten road checkpoint, Boten railway station and Khamsavath railway station. Friendship Bridge III is not on the eVisa list.

For a Thailand railway approach, search the State Railway of Thailand’s D-Ticket site for trains to Vientiane (Khamsavath), or call hotline 1690 for the service and ticket conditions. Khamsavath is on the Lao eVisa entry list; check that your visa type is accepted there before buying. The D-Ticket site publishes no Khamsavath fare or timetable, and no price is published for the road ride from Khamsavath into the city, so neither is included in the budget below.

Other crossings are listed for reference only: the national tourism office lists Friendship Bridge II for Savannakhet–Mukdahan and Bridge III for Khammouane–Nakhon Phanom; III is absent from the eVisa list. Its tourist-crossing list also includes Boten road/rail, and Vietnam crossings Nam Phao, Napau and Densavanh. Use the Laos entry guide and the receiving country’s official rules for the exact checkpoint; this guide covers no bus or onward connection from these ports.

Complete the Lao Digital Immigration Form within three days before arrival and again within three days before departure when using Wattay, Luang Prabang or Pakse international airport, or Friendship Bridge I. This arrival and departure form is separate from your visa.

Make the meals part of the stop, not the transfer

Keep the longer Lao meals in Luang Prabang, when you have three nights in the same room, and try Vang Vieng’s vegetable and noodle dishes on the full day there. Tamarind’s set menus serve two people, so a couple can share a range of dishes without ordering an oversized group meal. Riverside Boutique Resort publishes its own Lao menu for the Vang Vieng stay.

The Lao kip (LAK) is the local currency. Carry kip for everyday purchases; card acceptance is concentrated in larger hotels, restaurants and shops in the main cities. Exchange foreign currency at banks, airports or currency exchange offices. LOCA Pay offers card-funded payments through Lao QR codes.

Tell the restaurant about allergies before ordering; herbs, fish, sesame and other ingredients vary by dish. Have a meal before a station pickup rather than relying on a connection to provide lunch.

Practical questions

Which direction works for a first week in Laos?

Arrive at Luang Prabang, stay three nights, take the train to Vang Vieng for two nights, then continue by rail to Vientiane for the final night. Fly home from Wattay on day 7.

Which app should I use for train tickets?

Use LCR Ticket published by Laos-China Railway Company Limited. Its official listings support train search, booking, online payment, changes and refunds, and email registration. Read the conditions attached to the train and ticket you select.

Is Luang Prabang Railway Station in the old town?

No. Tourism Luang Prabang places it at Phik Village, about 15 km from town, with a road journey of about 30 minutes. Book the hotel-to-station ride as part of the train journey.

Can I go straight from a Vientiane train to an international flight?

No. This plan keeps a night in Vientiane between the train and the flight. The railway station and Wattay Airport are separate destinations, each with its own road transfer.

Can I use a Lao eVisa at Friendship Bridge III?

Friendship Bridge III is on the national tourism office’s general tourist-crossing list, but it is not on the official eVisa port list. Choose entry documents accepted at that exact crossing.

Can I add Nong Khiaw or the Bolaven Plateau to this week?

Add nights for either. Tanva sells Luang Prabang–Nong Khiaw minivan bookings at US$14 per person each way, with hotel pickup; confirm the departure and arrival details. Bolaven Tours offers a separate Pakse hotel-return waterfall day at US$55 per tuk-tuk for up to four or US$90 per minivan for up to six, with admissions extra.

How much does the transport cost for two adults?

The published amounts for 16–22 November 2026 total US$79 plus LAK50,000: the Kuang Si outing (US$60), the Vang Vieng station pickup (US$19) and the airport taxi (LAK50,000). Train fares and the other station and airport rides have no published price and are not included.
