Lantau in one day: Ngong Ping, the Big Buddha and Tai O

Lantau is a mountain-and-water day, with a cable car above the bay, the bronze Tian Tan Buddha above Ngong Ping, and stilt-house lanes beside Tai O’s tidal channels. These places reward different speeds: a slow climb and monastery lunch on the plateau, then an unhurried village walk. Give them a full day from your Hong Kong base and keep Disneyland for a separate choice.

Suggested time
1 full Lantau day within a 5-day, 4-night Hong Kong stay
Where to stay
All four nights in Tsim Sha Tsui, with a full-day return outing to Lantau.
Season and timing
Tropical cyclones normally affect Hong Kong from May to November and are particularly prevalent in September.

The short answer

Keep four city nights for a five-day Hong Kong stay, with one full day for Lantau. Book a one-way cable car from Tung Chung, visit Tian Tan Buddha and Po Lin Monastery, then take NLB 21 to Tai O and NLB 11 back to Tung Chung. Checked on 2026-10-16: an adult Standard Cabin single costs HK$205; bus 21 to Tai O costs HK$7.90 Monday–Saturday excluding public holidays or HK$19.20 Sundays and public holidays.

One Lantau day, four nights in the city

Keep all four nights at The Salisbury – YMCA of Hong Kong in Tsim Sha Tsui. Lantau is the full-day outing in a five-day Hong Kong stay: there is no island hotel change. Read the Hong Kong first-trip guide for the wider arrival decisions.

This route chooses the cable car, Buddha and monastery, then Tai O. Hong Kong Disneyland is a separate full-day substitute: choose the park instead of this circuit, rather than trying to attach it to the village afternoon. If you want a slow monastery visit or have difficulty with steps, stay around Ngong Ping and leave Tai O for another day.

  • Day 1, Monday 26 October: arrive at HKG, take Airport Express to Hong Kong Station, continue by MTR from connected Central to Tsim Sha Tsui and check in. Walk the nearby waterfront.
  • Day 2: keep the day for the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront and neighbourhood streets on foot.
  • Day 3, Wednesday: breakfast, MTR to Tung Chung, cable car up to Ngong Ping, Buddha and Po Lin, then bus 21 to Tai O and bus 11 back to Tung Chung. Return by MTR to the same hotel.
  • Day 4: another city day on foot from the Tsim Sha Tsui base; keep this day available to swap with Lantau if the weather changes.
  • Day 5, Friday 30 October: check out and reverse the Central/Hong Kong Station route to HKG. Four nights, with departure on day five.

Tung Chung to Ngong Ping: book the uphill journey

The cable car starts beside Tung Chung MTR station, Exit B. Its approximately 25-minute ride crosses water and green hills before reaching Ngong Ping. The village is a visitor precinct of shops and restaurants; the monastery and Buddha beyond it are the reason to keep walking. Use the Hong Kong transport guide for payment choices.

Checked on 2026-10-16: Ngong Ping 360 lists adult Standard Cabin tickets at HK$205 single or HK$295 return; Crystal Cabin is HK$240 single or HK$365 return, and the mixed Crystal/Standard return is HK$330. This circuit uses a Standard single uphill, since the return is by bus from Tai O. Children aged 3–11 pay HK$100 Standard single or HK$150 return; children aged 0–2 ride free. The Standard senior fares of HK$105 single or HK$155 return apply only to Hong Kong residents holding a valid JoyYou Card or Hong Kong Senior Citizen Card. Children under 12 need an accompanying person aged at least 15.

The operator lists Monday–Friday hours as 10:00–18:00 and Saturday, Sunday and public-holiday hours as 09:00–18:30, with special-date announcements taking precedence. Its 2026 maintenance calendar listed no scheduled maintenance day when checked on 2026-10-16. Scheduled servicing suspends the cable car while Ngong Ping Village stays open; look at the calendar before selecting the date.

Book through the official operator or an authorised seller. The FAQ allows online booking from 14 days before travel: select the date and ride time, and use the official e-ticket at the gate for an ordinary cable-car ticket. Booking avoids the ticket-purchase queue, but leave room for the boarding queue. Tickets are for the named user, who should carry ID; they are non-transferable, non-exchangeable and non-refundable under the general conditions. The cable-car ticket page gives an exception for service suspension: exchange for another date or apply for a refund through the operator. Return journeys on a return ticket must be used on the same day.

For an all-bus version, New Lantao Bus 23 leaves Tung Chung Tat Tung Road Bus Terminus for Ngong Ping. Checked on 2026-10-16: the full adult fare is HK$20.40 Monday–Saturday excluding public holidays or HK$37 on Sundays and public holidays, and the operator gives approximately 50 minutes for the journey. Its departures run 07:15–18:10 Monday–Saturday or 08:10–18:10 Sundays and public holidays. This is also the alternative for a planned cable-car maintenance day, subject to actual road and bus service.

The Buddha, monastery halls and lunch

Tian Tan Buddha sits above a broad flight of 268 steps, with the seated bronze figure looking out over the mountain landscape. Walk from Ngong Ping Village towards the statue and Po Lin Monastery; the cable-car operator places the Buddha about ten minutes on foot from the village. Climb only if the stairs suit your mobility and the conditions. The view from below still gives the statue its scale.

Checked on 2026-10-16: Po Lin Monastery’s visitor page lists the Buddha open 10:00–17:30 and its Big Buddha page 10:00–17:00, so plan to reach the Buddha by 17:00; it lists the monastery 09:00–18:00 and the Vegetarian Kitchen 11:30–16:30, every day including public holidays. Po Lin Monastery’s visitor pages list no admission fee for the Big Buddha or the monastery. Keep lunch before the Tai O transfer. Walk the monastery gardens and ornate halls with space for worshippers; this is a working Buddhist monastery.

The monastery kitchen serves a seasonal vegetarian meal, generally soup, a fried dish, vegetables and rice. Its neighbouring snack shop makes bean-curd dessert daily. These make a natural lunch and sweet finish without leaving the plateau. Po Lin Monastery’s food page, opened on 2026-10-16, gives the kitchen’s location and hours but no meal price, so ask at the Vegetarian Kitchen reception and add the cost to the subtotal below.

Wisdom Path is temporarily closed for refurbishment from 5 June 2025, according to the Tourism Commission notice still displayed when checked on 2026-10-16. Leave it out of this day. Its timber Heart Sutra columns are a reason to return after an official reopening, rather than a detour through the works.

Wheelchair users can board the cable car with staff assistance, but the operator requires an accompanying able-bodied person. That cabin access does not remove the Buddha staircase; plan a visit centred on the village and monastery instead of assuming the full climb is accessible.

Tai O: waterways and stilt-house lanes

Take bus 21 from Ngong Ping to Tai O after lunch. Aim for the published 14:20 departure rather than waiting until the end of the afternoon. Tai O changes the texture of the day: narrow waterways, metal-clad homes standing on piles, small bridges and dried-seafood shops replace the mountain precinct. Walk the public lanes and waterfront, keeping clear of residents’ entrances. As an editorial allowance, keep about two hours for the village, meal and walking, then return to the terminus before choosing a bus home.

The village is worth seeing on foot before considering a boat. The core plan includes no boat excursion: choose only an operator and route whose licensing and safety arrangements you can check locally, and never book on a promise of seeing dolphins.

Tai O Lookout, inside Tai O Heritage Hotel on Shek Tsai Po Street, serves dishes using local shrimp paste. Its own access page gives a 20-minute walk from Tai O Bus Terminus to the hotel: allow for the walk back as well. The hotel gives the time but no distance. Choose the fried rice or shrimp-paste-marinated pork-chop bun for a Tai O lunch on the earlier-bus variant below; with the 14:20 bus, keep the monastery lunch and use the village afternoon for walking.

The bus loop and the return margin

Checked on 2026-10-16: New Lantao Bus 21 from Ngong Ping to Tai O costs HK$7.90 Monday–Saturday excluding public holidays or HK$19.20 Sundays and public holidays; its published journey time is approximately 18 minutes. Monday–Saturday departures are 07:30, 10:35, 11:20, 12:20, 13:20, 14:20, 15:20, 16:20, 17:15 and 18:15, with an extra 17:45 on Saturdays only. On Sundays and public holidays they are 07:30, 10:35, 11:20, 12:20, 13:20, 13:50, 14:20, 14:50, 15:20, 15:50, 16:20, 16:45, 17:15, 17:45 and 18:30.

For the return, New Lantao Bus 11 runs from Tai O to Tung Chung Station Bus Terminus. Checked on 2026-10-16: the adult fare is HK$14 Monday–Saturday excluding public holidays or HK$23.30 Sundays and public holidays, with an approximately 52-minute journey. Departures run from 05:15 to 00:15 the following day under both day categories; some services divert via correctional institutions or North Lantau Hospital. Use the operator’s exact date-specific timetable rather than treating all departures as equally direct. Aim to leave Tai O around late afternoon, with time for a queue and another bus, instead of targeting the last departure.

NLB accepts Octopus or cash and gives no change. The adult Octopus or contactless fare between Tsim Sha Tsui and Tung Chung is HK$18.70 each way, on MTR’s fare chart effective from 20 September 2026. From Tsim Sha Tsui, take the Tsuen Wan Line to Lai King and change for Tung Chung; reverse that route after bus 11.

Keep Lantau away from the departure day. Although HKG is on the island, a mountain bus queue or cable-car suspension can use the airport margin. Leave luggage at the city hotel and return there after the outing.

Weather decides which day to go

Typhoons affect Hong Kong from May to November and can cause flooding and landslides; when Typhoon Signal No. 8 or higher is issued, public offices and public transport shut down, so get indoors and do not set out again until the Hong Kong Observatory lowers the signal and your operator confirms service. From Signal No. 3, stay away from the shore and avoid water activities, and under a Black Rainstorm Warning expect serious disruption and closures of public facilities and follow the Hong Kong Observatory and local authorities’ instructions.

Ngong Ping 360 says rainstorms or thunderstorms may suspend the cable car depending on actual conditions. Check the Hong Kong Observatory warnings and the operator’s service notice before leaving the city, and check NLB’s actual service announcements separately. Swap this day with the city day when the mountain visit would mean travelling into deteriorating weather. For seasonal planning, use the best time for Hong Kong guide.

A dated cost model for the stay and Lantau circuit

The model is two adults sharing one City View Suite for four nights, 26–29 October 2026, checking out on 30 October, with the Lantau outing on Wednesday 28 October. The city days are walks from the hotel, with no paid attractions. Checked on 2026-10-16: For two adults sharing the City View Suite for four nights, 26–29 October 2026, allow about HK$8,364 for the room and the included breakfasts, including the 10% service charge. The Salisbury is exempt from hotel accommodation tax.

Checked on 2026-10-16: The Salisbury – YMCA of Hong Kong’s 125 Memories of Love offer costs HK$1,901 per City View Suite per night, plus a 10% service charge, with buffet breakfast for two registered guests at The Haven. Terms that bind these dates: the rate is subject to availability, must be confirmed and guaranteed at least 7 days before check-in (by 19 October 2026 for a 26 October arrival), and is non-refundable, with cancellation charged at 100% of the entire stay. It runs until 15 December 2026, and neither its blackout dates nor its Friday–Sunday supplement fall on these Monday–Thursday nights.

Checked on 2026-10-16: Airport Express adult round-trip smart tickets cost HK$215 for Hong Kong Station, HK$195 for Kowloon and HK$130 for Tsing Yi; each is station-specific and valid for one return journey within 30 days of issue. The Tsuen Wan Line links Central and Tsim Sha Tsui; the adult Octopus or contactless single fare is HK$10.60.

The priced transport-and-room subtotal is about HK$9,365 for two. It includes no Buddha or monastery admission and no price for the monastery lunch.

For a Tai O lunch variant, take the 12:20 bus from Ngong Ping and eat after the walk to the hotel, instead of having the monastery set lunch. Checked on 2026-10-16: Tai O Lookout’s linked à-la-carte menu lists fried rice at HK$128 and the shrimp-paste pork-chop bun with country fries at HK$118, plus a 10% service charge. One dish each gives a two-person meal allowance of HK$270.60; adding it brings the priced subtotal to HK$9,636. Other meals remain on top.

Not included: flights, meals beyond the included breakfasts and optional Tai O lunch allowance, drinks, shopping, optional exhibitions, boats, Disneyland and any additional city transport.

  • Four-night suite: HK$7,604 room rate + HK$760.40 service charge = HK$8,364.40, with breakfast for two registered guests included.
  • Airport Express: two Hong Kong Station adult round-trip smart tickets × HK$215 = HK$430.
  • Airport last mile between Central and Tsim Sha Tsui: four adult Octopus/contactless journeys × HK$10.60 = HK$42.40.
  • Lantau MTR between Tsim Sha Tsui and Tung Chung: four adult Octopus/contactless journeys × HK$18.70 = HK$74.80.
  • Standard cable car uphill: two adult single tickets × HK$205 = HK$410.
  • Ngong Ping–Tai O bus 21: two weekday adult fares × HK$7.90 = HK$15.80.
  • Tai O–Tung Chung bus 11: two weekday adult fares × HK$14 = HK$28.
  • Known-cost transport-and-room subtotal: HK$9,365.40. Replacing the cable ascent with weekday bus 23 reduces this by HK$369.20 to HK$8,996.20.
  • Optional Tai O lunch: (HK$128 fried rice + HK$118 pork-chop bun with country fries) × 1.10 = HK$270.60 for two; cable-route subtotal with this meal HK$9,636, or all-bus HK$9,266.80.

Practical questions

Can I see Ngong Ping and Tai O in half a day?

Give the combination a full day. Cable-car queues, the Buddha steps, lunch and two village buses make a half-day circuit rushed. For a shorter outing, choose Ngong Ping and Po Lin alone.

Should I buy a return cable-car ticket?

Buy a single uphill for this route, because you leave Ngong Ping by bus 21 for Tai O and return to Tung Chung on bus 11. A return ticket suits a visit focused on Ngong Ping; both journeys must be used on the same day.

Is Wisdom Path open?

The Tourism Commission notice checked on 2026-10-16 says it is temporarily closed for refurbishment from 5 June 2025. Do not include it until the official notice changes.

Can I use a wheelchair on the cable car?

Ngong Ping 360 provides boarding assistance and requires an able-bodied companion for wheelchair users. The Buddha’s 268 steps are a separate obstacle: plan around the village and monastery if stairs are unsuitable.

Can I add Hong Kong Disneyland or fly home that evening?

Treat Disneyland as a full-day substitute. Keep Lantau away from your flight day so that weather changes, mountain buses and queues do not use your airport buffer.
