Yilan and Luodong: forest heritage, night-market food and bases
Beyond Taipei’s mountains, Yilan County opens into the Lanyang Plain, where farming country and old timber routes change the rhythm of a trip. Yilan city and Luodong are separate centres. Choose the one that suits your evenings, then build days around forestry heritage, traditional arts or a nearby hot-spring visit.

- Suggested time
- Two nights; add time for a separate mountain or coastal excursion
- Where to stay
- Luodong station and night-market area for forestry heritage and food; Yilan station area for a northern town base
- Season and timing
- Use outdoor parks in settled weather and indoor exhibitions on wet days. Check current typhoon, rail and road notices before a longer excursion.
The short answer
Spend two nights in Luodong or Yilan city, with one day for forestry heritage and market food and another for traditional arts or the wider Lanyang Plain. Choose Luodong for its night market and Forestry Culture Park, or Yilan city for a northern base. Keep one hotel, use rail between the towns and arrange the separate road connection for outlying attractions. Jiaoxi is a different overnight choice if bathing matters more than markets.
Choose the town you want to return to after dinner
Luodong suits a stay built around its night market: walking home after a succession of small dishes is more useful than a room that needs a late taxi. Compare the actual property-to-station and property-to-market walks, including crossings and luggage. The downtown Forestry Culture Park gives the town a substantial daytime visit too.
Yilan city offers another rail-connected base and its own market evening, with Luodong as a separate outing. A rural B&B brings a different setting, but the county overview’s countryside emphasis does not establish a bus stop beside every property. Settle arrival, meals and pickup arrangements before booking beyond either town.
Luodong Forestry Culture Park: read the plain’s timber story
The Forestry Culture Park occupies a former administration and timber-storage site. The Tourism Administration describes its log pond, forest railway remains, steam locomotive, exhibitions and waterside trails. They connect this lowland town to the mountain forests whose timber arrived here. Give the displays and outdoor remains time together rather than using the park only for photographs.
A park morning fits naturally before lunch, a rest and the night market. For a second green space, Luodong Sports Park combines landscape, water and forest areas with sports facilities. It is beyond the immediate station area, so arrange its road connection separately instead of assuming all the town’s parks sit together.

Make time for the local food
What to eat and where to look
Oyster omelet
Oysters, egg and leafy vegetables are bound with starch and pan-fried, then served with a sauce. The tourism overview names it among the county’s market snacks.
- Where to look
- Night-market menus in Luodong or Yilan listing oyster omelets.
- Fit it into your day
- Order one during a first round of market dishes before choosing another course.
Contains shellfish and egg; ask about the sauce and other ingredients.
Chinese angelica mutton soup
The national Yilan overview highlights this warming mutton soup among the local night-market choices.
- Where to look
- Stalls displaying mutton-soup menus; confirm the actual broth and serving style.
- Fit it into your day
- Choose a seated bowl as the substantial part of dinner.
Contains meat; ask about herbs and other ingredients rather than treating it as a health remedy.
Fried stinky tofu
A broader Taiwanese market choice: fermented tofu fried crisp and served with garnishes such as pickled cabbage, as the national snack guide describes.
- Where to look
- Menus showing stinky tofu; check whether the preparation is fried or another version.
- Fit it into your day
- Share a small portion alongside a different main dish.
Soy is present; ask about fermentation ingredients, sauce and shared oil if avoiding animal products or allergens.
Let the night market be dinner
The national Yilan overview recommends both town night markets for snacks, including oyster omelets and Chinese angelica mutton soup. Let the market be dinner rather than arriving after a large meal. A first circuit helps you compare menus and queues; a few contrasting dishes make a better evening than repeatedly ordering the same fried snack.
Dietary choices are individual stall decisions. Ask about broth, seafood, egg, sauces and shared cooking surfaces where relevant, and choose the actual menu rather than assuming every preparation is the same. Keep a nearby sit-down alternative for rain, particularly when a late return would make travelling between towns less appealing.

Use a separate day for traditional arts or a county excursion
The National Center for Traditional Arts sits beside the Dongshan River in Wujie, outside Luodong’s walking centre. Its official description joins exhibitions, performances and opportunities to take part in artistic creation. Choose a programme that interests you and give the road journey space in the day; living arts are the reason to come.
When checked on 2026-10-08, the official access page listed TRA to Luodong followed by the Green 21 Dongshan River route or Kamalan 621 to the centre. Recheck your service and return. Jiaoxi, the northeast coast and Taipingshan suggest different excursions; choose one theme rather than squeezing baths, mountain forest and coast into a single day.

Arrive by rail and keep the last connection realistic
Yilan and Luodong are conventional TRA stations; High Speed Rail requires a separate onward journey from its northern stations. Select your actual train in the railway timetable, checking the destination and that service’s booking requirements. The useful connection depends on the train chosen, not a universal Taipei-to-Yilan transfer time.
For two nights, settle near the station before a market dinner, then give the full day to forestry heritage or a booked arts visit. Use the remaining part-day for the other town or a local outing, adjusting for the programme. A mountain trip needs more room, and the airport journey deserves its own margin.
Practical questions
Should I stay in Yilan city or Luodong?
Choose Luodong when its night market and Forestry Culture Park are priorities. Yilan city is another rail-connected base for the northern plain. Compare the actual property address and evening walk, then keep one hotel rather than moving between the towns.
How many nights are useful for Yilan and Luodong?
Two nights allow a market evening, a substantial sightseeing day and a second town visit around arrival or departure. Add time for a mountain excursion or several road transfers.
Can I reach Luodong by High Speed Rail?
Luodong and Yilan use the conventional TRA railway, not HSR stations. If arriving by High Speed Rail elsewhere, plan the separate connection and select the actual onward service before booking.
Is the National Center for Traditional Arts next to Luodong Station?
No: it is in Wujie beside the Dongshan River and needs a separate road connection. When checked on 2026-10-08, the official access page listed Green 21 and Kamalan 621 from Luodong; confirm the current service and return trip.
