Puerto Princesa: the city, Sabang and Honda Bay
Puerto Princesa works best when you distinguish three plans: arriving and eating in the city, visiting the Underground River through Sabang, and heading to Honda Bay for an island outing. These are separate journeys, not stops to connect with a short walk. Choose the excursion you care about most before choosing accommodation, then use the remaining time for a city meal and a waterfront pause. A hotel booking in Sabang is not an Underground River reservation.

- Suggested time
- A suggested 3-day stay for the city and two separate outings; shorten the plan by choosing one excursion.
- Where to stay
- Compare the city centre around Rizal Avenue and Manalo Road with a distinct coastal stay in Sabang, Barangay Cabayugan.
- Season and timing
- Check current weather, boat operations and park notices for your dates; keep a land-based alternative rather than promising an island departure.
The short answer
Allow 3 days if you want both the Underground River and Honda Bay: an arrival and city day, a confirmed Sabang outing, then a separate bay day. This is a suggested travel structure, not an operator timetable. Choose a city base for airport arrangements and multiple excursions, or stay in Sabang when the park and coast are the focus. Confirm park access and the actual hotel pickup before paying for a tour.
Choose the base before building the sightseeing list
Start with the excursion that is least replaceable for you. If the Underground River is the reason for coming, establish the permit and departure arrangements first. The park’s official notice, checked on 3 October 2026, says that arriving directly or sleeping in Sabang does not guarantee a Visitor Entry Permit. Keep that distinction clear when comparing hotel packages and day tours: a room, a transfer and permission to enter the park are different commitments.
A city-centre hotel is a practical option to compare if you want different day outings and city dinners. Sabang is a coastal alternative for a park-focused stay, but it changes the rest of your routing. The city tourism directory records accommodation in the city and at Sabang; it is useful for understanding the areas, not for proving that a particular room is available or a listed business still offers the same services. Confirm the exact address, reception arrangements and pickup location with your provider.
Give the Underground River its own confirmed outing
Treat the park visit as the day’s main plan. Sabang is the access area for the river excursion, rather than the city waterfront. Ask the supplier who handles the Visitor Entry Permit, what confirmation you will receive, where the journey begins, and what happens if weather or park operations change. Avoid making a non-refundable onward connection depend on completing the excursion at a particular hour.
When comparing products, read the pickup boundary rather than relying on the words Puerto Princesa in the title. A city departure does not establish collection from every hotel in the municipality, and it does not establish a Sabang departure either. The linked Viator product is a real Underground River day trip from Puerto Princesa; current availability and your hotel’s eligibility still need checking on the booking page. This guide does not repeat unverified entry prices, driving times or guaranteed tour inclusions.

Make time for the local food
What to eat and where to look
Chaolong noodles
Noodles associated with Puerto Princesa’s Vietnamese-influenced food culture.
- Where to look
- City restaurants whose current menu clearly lists chaolong.
- Fit it into your day
- A seated arrival-day meal after checking in; ask whether bread is offered separately.
Confirm broth, meat and garnishes; the historical restaurant source does not establish current opening hours.
Grilled fish
A seafood meal described in the city’s Honda Bay tourism material.
- Where to look
- A city seafood menu or a bay supplier that explicitly confirms its lunch.
- Fit it into your day
- Compare any included excursion lunch with the dinner you plan to buy independently.
Ask about the fish, preparation and sauces, and do not assume every boat package includes food.
Sinigang
A sour soup named in the official Palawan tourism food description.
- Where to look
- A restaurant menu that specifies the main ingredient and serving size.
- Fit it into your day
- An option for a city dinner after a full outing.
Recipes differ; check the protein, stock and other ingredients with the restaurant.
Keep Honda Bay separate and inspect the boat-day details
The city’s Honda Bay information identifies the Santa Lourdes area as the mainland departure location. Compare the actual wharf meeting point, road transfer, island list and return arrangements before booking. An island-hopping description is not a promise that every named island will be included on your travel date. Ask how conditions affect the route and which costs, equipment or meals are included.
If the bay is your priority, reserve the day for it instead of trying to bolt it onto the Sabang plan. Keep the city meal flexible around the confirmed return. For a group with different swimming preferences, discuss how time ashore and time on the boat will work before choosing a product. The Underground River offer below is for the Sabang park outing; it is not a Honda Bay booking. Compare the activity’s actual destination as carefully as its price.

Use city meals and the waterfront as a flexible arrival plan
On the arrival day, settle into your chosen hotel and check tomorrow’s confirmations before adding another excursion. Choose a chaolong meal in the city or a restaurant serving a dish you want to try, then consider a waterfront pause if the weather and your remaining energy suit it. The Baywalk photograph in this guide shows the city waterfront; the Underground River photograph shows Sabang, and the sunset photograph was taken from an island in Honda Bay. They illustrate different parts of the municipality, not a single walking circuit.
Chaolong is part of the city’s Vietnamese-influenced food story: a restaurant’s own historical page describes noodles and French breads. That establishes the dish’s local connection, not today’s menu, address or hours. Grilled fish is described in the city’s Honda Bay tourism material, while sinigang appears in the Tourism Promotions Board’s Palawan food description. Use these as meal ideas and ask about the actual ingredients and available dishes wherever you eat. Keep included excursion lunches separate from meals you plan to buy independently.

Separate the arrival airport from the next Palawan journey
Puerto Princesa Airport uses PPS. The Philippine Airlines route page checked for this guide offers Manila–Puerto Princesa travel; verify your own date, operating airline and arrival airport when choosing a ticket. Arrange the onward journey to the hotel you actually booked. A city-centre room and a Sabang room require different transfer planning, so tell the provider the full property address rather than only saying Puerto Princesa.
Use the suggested 3-day structure as a decision aid: arrival and city meal first, a confirmed Underground River visit on one separate day, and Honda Bay on another. If you have less time, choose the excursion that matters more and keep room for the airport connection. If you are continuing to another Palawan base, confirm that transfer independently and treat it as a travel stage. This guide does not imply that El Nido, Port Barton or Coron are neighbouring city stops or promise a transfer duration.
Practical questions
Does an overnight stay in Sabang guarantee river entry?
No. The park’s notice says that going directly or staying in Sabang does not guarantee a Visitor Entry Permit. Confirm the permit arrangements independently.
Should I visit Honda Bay and the Underground River together?
This guide suggests separate days. They have different departure arrangements, and you should compare the exact routing rather than treating them as adjacent stops.
Where should I stay for a first visit?
Compare a city base for arrival arrangements, meals and different excursions with Sabang for a park-focused coastal stay. Check the hotel’s actual pickup eligibility.
Which airport should I use for Puerto Princesa?
Puerto Princesa Airport is PPS. Verify the ticket for your dates and arrange the transfer to your particular city or Sabang hotel.
Is the linked tour a Honda Bay island trip?
No. The linked product is an Underground River day trip from Puerto Princesa. Check the provider’s live page for availability, pickup and permit arrangements.
