Sarawak in 7 days: Kuching and Mulu with separate park bookings
A week can combine Kuching’s riverside city days with a separate Mulu cave stay, provided the booked flights fit the change of base. Keep the Bako outing within the Kuching block, and leave two full Mulu days for introductory cave visits. City meals, resort meals and park activities need different arrangements.

- Suggested time
- Seven days / six nights: three in Kuching and three in Mulu.
- Where to stay
- Central Kuching / south-bank waterfront for days 1–3; a separately booked Mulu property for days 4–6.
- Season and timing
- Check current local weather and official/operator access notices for your own travel dates.
The short answer
Use three nights in Kuching and three in Mulu over seven days. Choose days1–2 for arrival and the waterfront, a conditional Bako outing on day3, the actual Mulu connection on day4, two cave days on days5–6 and the booked onward journey on day7. Confirm the flights and cave bookings before committing to this two-base route.
Days 1–2: Kuching arrival and waterfront
KCH is Kuching International Airport in CAAM’s glossary. Arrange the actual road arrival to a central Kuching property. The tourism board places the Waterfront on the south bank of the Sarawak River and describes the Old Courthouse and Darul Hana Bridge context.
Use the full city day for a manageable waterfront walk and a separate meal. The Old Courthouse and Darul Hana Bridge provide distinct landmarks around the riverfront; confirm access to any interior visit and keep unscheduled performances optional.
Day 3: a conditional Bako outing
Sarawak Forestry describes Bako’s forest, mangrove and coastal habitats. Choose a park outing only after the actual operator or park confirms the current transfer, trail and participant arrangements.
Keep the city property as your lodging base for this proposed day trip. Central Kuching is not an address inside Bako National Park. No wildlife sighting, boat departure or safe swimming condition is promised.

Make time for the local food
What to eat and where to look
Sarawak laksa
Regional noodle soup with prawn broth and variable chicken/prawn toppings.
- Where to look
- Current Kuching menus during the city stay.
- Fit it into your day
- Choose before or after a park day; not a promised park cafeteria dish.
Check prawns, chicken and toppings.
Kolo mee
Dry noodles with variable meat toppings.
- Where to look
- Current Kuching restaurant menus.
- Fit it into your day
- A city breakfast or lunch, with ingredients checked at the kitchen.
The tourism board describes pork or beef options; no vegetarian assurance.
Midin
Regional jungle fern dish, sometimes prepared with shrimp paste.
- Where to look
- Ask a Kuching kitchen about its current vegetable preparation.
- Fit it into your day
- A component of a city meal before leaving for Mulu.
Check belacan and other ingredients; not a certified vegetarian dish.
Day 4: a separately booked Mulu arrival
MZV is Mulu Airport in the official glossary. Select the actual flight and ground arrangements before confirming the Mulu nights; no current direct flight or same-day road connection is established here.
Mulu Marriott’s operator address places the resort at Sungai Melinau. Confirm the booked room and airport pickup directly. A park-HQ room or cave reservation is a separate decision; neither follows automatically from a resort stay.

Days 5–6: choose cave visits after park confirmation
Use one full day for the operator-confirmed Lang/Deer outing and another for Wind/Clearwater if that sequence fits the actual booking. Mulu Marriott lists those cave pairings separately. The linked three-day/two-night package instead lists Lang/Deer on its arrival day, Wind/Clearwater on day two and departure on day three. It does not supply the three Mulu nights or exact days 4–7 sequence proposed here: arrange the additional night and compatible cave visits and transfers separately.
Keep a changed-weather or rest alternative that works from the Mulu room. Marriott Cafe provides a real resort meal option, but its menu does not establish that every Sarawak dish is served. Pinnacles is a different expedition and is not part of these introductory cave days.

Day 7: the actual onward flight and meals
Arrange the final Mulu ground connection and the booked onward flight, with any further connection explicitly included. The airport field below records the KCH arrival example only.
Use Sarawak laksa, kolo mee and midin as regional food ideas for the Kuching city stay. Check the actual kitchen’s menu and ingredients. Arrange the Mulu arrival meal and departure breakfast with the exact accommodation so neither depends on an assumed airport cafe or park dish.
Practical questions
Is this a road day trip from Kuching to Mulu?
No. Arrange the actual Mulu flight and its ground connections separately; no current direct flight is guaranteed here.
Does the Kuching stay put me inside Bako?
No. Central Kuching is the city lodging base for a conditional day outing with its own transfer.
What should I confirm for Mulu before booking?
Confirm the real MZV flight, room, airport pickup, meals and each cave outing. The resort lists cave pairings and local dining, but no reservation or permitted access on a future date is established by those descriptions.
Are the three food ideas Mulu cafeteria dishes?
No. They are regional choices for current Kuching menus; arrange remote meals with the actual accommodation.
