Kundasang guide: Kinabalu Park, Poring and where to stay

Kundasang and Kinabalu Park offer the mountain without requiring a summit climb. The park headquarters sits in cool montane forest below Mount Kinabalu, while Kundasang spreads across market streets, farms and slopes a short drive away. Poring lies much lower and warmer on the Ranau side, far enough away to deserve its own half- or full-day outing. Two nights turn these scattered places into a highland stay instead of a long return drive from Kota Kinabalu.

Suggested time
2 nights; 3 if Poring is a priority
Where to stay
Kinabalu Park entrance for forest access; Kundasang town for practical meals; Mesilau locality for rural quiet; Ranau or Poring for hot springs
Season and timing
The highlands are cool, wet and changeable year-round. Early mornings often give the clearest mountain opportunity, while rain and cloud can rearrange walks in any month.

The short answer

Stay two nights near Kinabalu Park or Kundasang, giving the first afternoon to the park headquarters and the full middle day to Kundasang or Poring. Choose the park entrance for trails and early garden access, Kundasang town for meals and local life, or the Mesilau locality for quiet views with more driving. This is a non-summit stay: the Low's Peak climb requires a separate slot, hostel, permit and registered guide. Begin outdoor plans early, because cloud often gathers around the mountain as the day develops.

Where to sleep: park gate, town, Mesilau or Poring

Stay beside the Kinabalu Park entrance if the botanical garden and forest trails are the main reason for coming. You can begin before day visitors arrive and return to the room when rain settles in. Dining is tied more closely to the park and lodges, so read the property's meal arrangements before booking.

Kundasang town is the practical all-round base, with local shops, food and straightforward access to the market area and war memorial. Properties scatter along steep roads, and a place described as Kundasang may still require a car for every meal. Use the exact map point, not the town name alone.

The Mesilau locality suits a rural stay near farms and mountain-facing slopes. Sabah Parks marks its Mesilau substation and former nature facilities closed; that closure does not close privately operated accommodation in the wider locality, but it means you should not book expecting the old park trails. Ranau or Poring makes sense only when hot springs and lowland walks outweigh repeated access to Park Headquarters.

Kinabalu Park Headquarters without a summit climb

Kinabalu Park protects a remarkable rise from lowland rainforest to alpine scrub around 4,095-metre Mount Kinabalu. UNESCO identifies it as a South-East Asian centre of plant diversity, with an exceptional range of habitats and species. At headquarters, the botanical garden and short nature activities translate that scale into a visit that does not require climbing equipment.

On 11 October 2026, Sabah Parks listed headquarters hours of 08:00–17:00, with last entry to the Botanical Garden at 15:00. Its visitor programme showed guided garden sessions at 09:00, 12:00 and 15:00 and a guided nature-trail walk at 11:00 from the Multipurpose Hall. The same page listed park conservation charges of RM50 for an international adult and RM25 for an international child, separate from the botanical-garden fee.

Use the first afternoon for the visitor centre or a short walk, then return early the next morning if plants and forest are the priority. The summit route is not an ordinary trail from this visitor area: Sabah Parks requires advance arrangements and a registered mountain guide.

Make time for the local food

What to eat and where to look

01

Kundasang highland vegetables

The cool slopes support market displays of cabbages, leafy greens and other vegetables that make the town's produce stalls part of the highland journey.

Where to look
Kundasang market and restaurants that identify vegetables from the surrounding farms.
Fit it into your day
A vegetable-led lunch after the park or market visit.

Market produce is an ingredient, not a ready-to-eat meal; wash anything bought for later.

02

Fresh milk or ice cream

Desa Dairy Farm sells dairy products within its ticketed visitor setting, making milk or ice cream a natural addition if the farm is already on the route.

Where to look
Desa Dairy Farm during a pre-booked visitor session, or current local shops carrying its products.
Fit it into your day
A midday snack rather than the reason to cross the highlands twice.

Contains dairy; entry to the farm requires its own dated ticket.

03

Sabah tea

Tea grown near Ranau fits naturally with a cooler highland breakfast or afternoon pause and travels well as a local purchase.

Where to look
Highland cafés and shops that label the producer, or the Sabah Tea area if it forms part of a Ranau-side route.
Fit it into your day
A warm drink after an early forest visit.

A tea-estate detour is separate from Kinabalu Park and should not be squeezed into a Poring day.

04

Sinalau bakas

Kadazandusun-style smoked wild boar, usually sold in simple roadside portions, is one of the highland route's most distinctive foods.

Where to look
Clearly labelled roadside stalls on the Kundasang–Ranau route where it is being cooked and sold for immediate eating.
Fit it into your day
A savoury stop on a driving day, not a formal restaurant meal.

This is pork and is not halal; choose a different stop if that does not suit your diet.

Kundasang's market, memorial and dairy-farm decision

Kundasang is a working highland town as well as a mountain viewpoint. Its produce stalls make a useful stop for fruit, vegetables and snacks, while the Kundasang War Memorial gives historical context to the Sandakan–Ranau death marches and those who suffered during the Second World War. Give the memorial its own quiet visit rather than treating it as a photographic viewpoint.

Desa Dairy Farm is a ticketed attraction in the Mesilau area, not an open landscape stop. On 11 October 2026, its official booking system listed RM20 for an international adult, RM10 for an international child aged 7–12 and free entry below age seven, with date selection required to see availability. Go for the working-farm setting and dairy products only if the booked session fits your route; it need not displace the park.

A satisfying non-climbing day can pair the park in the morning with Kundasang town and one booked attraction in the afternoon. Trying to add Poring as well turns the day into road travel.

Poring pairs managed hot-spring pools with lowland forest on the Ranau side.

Poring is a separate lowland outing

Poring lies about 40 kilometres from Kinabalu Park Headquarters at roughly 400 metres above sea level, so the forest feels warmer and more tropical. Sabah Parks describes hot sulphur spring baths, managed gardens and forest walks. The nearby Kipungit Waterfall is listed about one kilometre away, roughly a 15-minute walk, while Langanan Waterfall is about 3.4 kilometres away and roughly two hours on foot.

On 11 October 2026, Sabah Parks listed the canopy walkway as temporarily closed from 30 July 2025 until further notice for major maintenance and upgrades. Do not buy a day tour solely for the canopy. Poring can still justify the drive for the hot-spring complex and a permitted forest walk, but the closure changes the value of a hurried visit.

Make Poring the main plan for one day from Kundasang, or sleep on the Ranau side if you want a slower morning there. Trail conditions, garden access and any rafflesia bloom are variable; staff guidance on the day should shape the walk.

Road distances make a car or driver valuable

Sabah Parks places Kinabalu Park Headquarters 92 kilometres from Kota Kinabalu. The mountain road makes a return day trip possible, but not restful, and public transport does not link the scattered highland sights as a visitor circuit. A rental car, private driver or carefully specified tour gives control over the park gate, accommodation and Poring.

Ask a highland property for its exact access road and whether the final approach is steep or unsealed. Distances between the park entrance, Kundasang, Mesilau and Poring are short enough to look trivial on a booking map, yet repeated drives consume the day. Group Park Headquarters with Kundasang, and treat Poring as the Ranau-side outing.

If driving from Kota Kinabalu, arrive in daylight. Fuel and meals are easier to arrange around town and Ranau than at an isolated hillside stay, and mist or heavy rain can slow the road.

Cloud can cover the mountain quickly, which is why a highland night improves the visit.

Weather rewards early starts, not promises

Mount Kinabalu can be clear at breakfast and hidden by the time a city tour arrives. A highland night creates another morning opportunity, but no base or season guarantees a full view. Book for the forest, gardens and cooler landscape so the trip still works beneath cloud.

METMalaysia describes Sabah as relatively wet even during the country's generally drier southwest monsoon and notes the influence of typhoon tails from the Philippines. Pack a light waterproof layer, shoes with grip and something warm for evenings. Put the most important outdoor walk first each day, with the market, memorial or a long meal as the rain alternative.

Keep the summit climb in a separate booking

Low's Peak rises to 4,095.2 metres, but the standard climb is not an optional trail added after breakfast. Sabah Parks requires a registered guide and sells the climb around a mountain-hostel booking, permit and fixed two-day schedule. The Mesilau route is closed; the visitor climb uses Timpohon Gate.

Non-climbing companions have a complete trip without following the climber: use Park Headquarters, Kundasang and Poring, then reunite after the descent. Climbers should read the dedicated Mount Kinabalu planning guide before paying for highland hotels or flights, because the official slot determines the rest of the sequence.

Practical questions

How many nights should I spend in Kundasang?

Two nights are enough for Kinabalu Park, Kundasang and one clear morning opportunity. Add a third if Poring or a slow farm-and-market day matters, because Poring is about 40 kilometres from Park Headquarters.

Where is the best place to stay near Kinabalu Park?

Stay at the park entrance for the botanical garden and early forest access, or in Kundasang town for meals and practical services. The Mesilau locality is quieter but requires more driving and its Sabah Parks substation is closed.

Can I enjoy Kinabalu Park without climbing the mountain?

Yes. Park Headquarters has a botanical garden, visitor interpretation and guided nature activities, while Kundasang and Poring add highland and lowland experiences. The summit climb is a separate booking.

Is the Poring canopy walkway open?

On 11 October 2026, Sabah Parks listed it as temporarily closed from 30 July 2025 until further notice. The hot-spring complex and other permitted attractions may still operate, but the canopy should not anchor the trip.

Is Desa Dairy Farm free to visit?

No. Its official system sells dated entry; on 11 October 2026 it listed RM20 for an international adult and RM10 for an international child aged 7–12.

Can I do Kundasang as a day trip from Kota Kinabalu?

You can, but Sabah Parks places its headquarters 92 kilometres from the city and a day return leaves limited time beyond the main stops. Two highland nights produce a much better park and weather plan.
