Northern Vietnam in 7 days: Hanoi, Sa Pa, a bay cruise and Ninh Binh
Hanoi, the rice terraces of Sa Pa, the karst islands of Ha Long and Lan Ha Bay and the river valleys of Ninh Binh are the four places most people picture when they think of northern Vietnam. They do not sit on one line. Sa Pa is up in the mountains of Lao Cai province, five to six hours from Hanoi by road; the bays are east, on the coast; Ninh Binh is two hours south. A week can hold all four only if Hanoi works as the hub, the long Sa Pa leg runs overnight, and each move gets the half day it really takes.

- Suggested time
- 7 days (6 nights)
- Where to stay
- Hanoi Old Quarter (2 nights), the night train to Lao Cai (1 night), a Ta Van homestay or Sa Pa town (1 night), a boat on Ha Long or Lan Ha Bay (1 night), Tam Coc in Ninh Binh (1 night)
- Season and timing
- September to November suits the whole route: the national tourism board describes cool, clear skies on the bay and around Hanoi, and early October as the moment Sa Pa's terraces turn gold before the harvest. April and May are the second choice. June to August brings heavy rain and storms that can cancel cruises; December to March is cold and misty, especially in Sa Pa.
The short answer
Seven days is enough for all four stops if you accept one full travel day and a busy pace. Sleep one night in Hanoi's Old Quarter, take the overnight train to Lao Cai on day two, spend a night in a homestay in the Muong Hoa valley around Ta Van, and come back to Hanoi by limousine van on day four. Then take a packaged two-day, one-night cruise on Ha Long or Lan Ha Bay with its Hanoi transfer included, and go on to Tam Coc in Ninh Binh for the last night, leaving for Noi Bai airport after an early boat on day seven. Book an evening flight home. If storms close the bay, swap the cruise for a second Ninh Binh night; if that is too much road, replace Sa Pa with Pu Luong.
How the week fits together
The four stops sit in three directions from Hanoi, which is why the capital has to be the hub rather than one stop among several. The national tourism board puts the limousine vans from Hanoi to Sa Pa at five to six hours, or an eight-hour night train to Lao Cai followed by about an hour on the road. VnExpress gave the road time from Hanoi to Ha Long Bay as two to two and a half hours in April 2026, and the tourism board describes Ninh Binh as about two hours from Hanoi. Trying to link Sa Pa directly with the coast or with Ninh Binh means a day spent in a van; going back through Hanoi each time keeps the moves short and lets you leave your big bag at one hotel.
The plan below uses the overnight train for the longest leg, so a night of sleep covers what would otherwise be a lost day. The return from Sa Pa is by daytime van, which gives you the evening in Hanoi before the cruise shuttle the next morning. The bay comes before Ninh Binh because a cruise is the stop most likely to be cancelled by weather: if it is called off, Ninh Binh can absorb the extra night.
Be honest about the trade-off. This is a full week with one hotel change almost every day. If you would rather unpack, our one-week route that skips Sa Pa gives Hanoi, the bay and Ninh Binh two nights each; if you want mountains without the long road, Pu Luong (see the variants below) is closer and fits better with Ninh Binh.
Days 1–2: Hanoi, then the night train north
Sleep in the Old Quarter on the first night. The tourism board's walking guide starts at Hoan Kiem Lake with the red The Huc bridge and Ngoc Son Temple, recommends bun cha at Bun Cha Huong Lien or the less crowded Hang Quat, and notes that the lake is closed to vehicles at weekends, when Hang Dao street becomes a night market after dark. That is enough for an arrival evening.
Give day two to the old capital before the train. When we checked on 2026-10-03, the Temple of Literature's official site listed opening from 8:00 to 17:00 every day and a 70,000-dong standard ticket. The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is closed for its regular maintenance: Tuoi Tre reported the Mausoleum Command's notice that visits are suspended from 4 September to 2 November 2026 and resume on 3 November, so before then see Ba Dinh Square from outside. Ask your hotel to keep your main luggage until day four and take a small bag north.
The railway operator lists overnight services between Hanoi and Lao Cai (trains SP3/SP4 and SP7/SP8). We did not read a timetable, so check departure times and book on the Vietnam Railways site, dsvn.vn, as soon as your dates are fixed. The tourism board calls the night train the most popular way to Sa Pa, with transfer vans finishing the journey up the mountain from Lao Cai station. If you cannot get a berth, take a morning limousine van on day three instead and accept a shorter first afternoon in the valley.

Make time for the local food
What to eat and where to look

Bun cha (grilled pork with rice noodles)
Grilled pork patties and slices in a sweet-sour dipping broth, eaten with rice vermicelli and a basket of herbs. It is a Hanoi lunch dish, and the national tourism board's Old Quarter guide names it among the meals to have there.
- Where to look
- Old Quarter shops with a charcoal grill at the door; the tourism board names Bun Cha Huong Lien and, less crowded, Hang Quat.
- Fit it into your day
- Lunch on day two, after the Temple of Literature and before the night train.
Contains pork and fish sauce; the fried spring rolls often served alongside may contain shellfish.
Sa Pa rainbow trout
The tourism board calls Sa Pa's rainbow trout famous and describes it served in a warming soup, or grilled with spices and rolled in rice paper with cucumber, greens and herbs. The same guide recommends the fresh handmade tofu and chayote leaves (rau su su) stir-fried with garlic.
- Where to look
- Restaurants in Sa Pa town; in a homestay, ask your host what is fresh that day.
- Fit it into your day
- Dinner on day three in the valley, or lunch in town before the van back on day four.
Grilled trout comes with bones; ask for a fillet if you prefer.
Cha muc (Ha Long squid cake)
Pounded fresh cuttlefish mixed with pork fat, onion, garlic and pepper, shaped into cakes and fried golden. Quang Ninh's tourism information centre calls it one of the province's most famous dishes and pairs it with steamed rice rolls or sticky rice.
- Where to look
- On many cruise menus, and in restaurants in Bai Chay and Hon Gai if you have time on land.
- Fit it into your day
- Ask whether your cruise serves it on day five or six.
Contains seafood and pork.
Com chay and de tai chanh (Ninh Binh rice crust and goat)
The tourism board names these as Ninh Binh's signature dishes: com chay is a fried rice crust eaten as a snack or dipped into a warm stew, and de tai chanh is goat meat lightly cured in lemon juice with chillies, lime leaves and sesame seeds. It suggests banh cuon, fresh rice rolls with pork and mushrooms, for breakfast.
- Where to look
- Local restaurants around Tam Coc and Trang An; look for 'thịt dê' (goat) on the sign.
- Fit it into your day
- Dinner on day six in Tam Coc, ordered to share; banh cuon before the early boat on day seven.
De tai chanh is only lightly cured, not fully cooked; order a cooked goat dish if you prefer.
Days 3–4: Sa Pa and the Muong Hoa valley
From Lao Cai it is about an hour by road to Sa Pa town. Do not spend the day there: the reason to come is the Muong Hoa valley, where terraces still farmed today run down to the river. The tourism board's sustainable-travel guide recommends trekking with a locally owned company, agreeing the route with your guide before you set off, and staying overnight in one of the valley's villages; a typical day includes a market stop for food, a lunch cooked over a fire and an afternoon among the terraces or bamboo groves. Sleeping in a homestay or lodge around Ta Van puts the terraces at your door and spares you a second night in town.
On the morning of day four, walk a little more in the valley or visit Cat Cat or Ta Phin, which the tourism board says can be seen without a guide. The Fansipan cable car, which the board describes as a 15-minute ride to the 3,143-metre summit, is possible too, but on this schedule it competes with the van back; keep it for a clear morning and check the operator's hours on the day. Allow five to six hours for the limousine van to Hanoi (the vans use the centre of Sa Pa town), and plan to be back in the Old Quarter by evening.
The board notes that Sa Pa is home to eight ethnic minority groups, and its local contributor advises buying textiles at the back and upstairs of the Sa Pa market, from the women who make them, rather than from street sellers. Chilly weather lasts from November to March, so pack a warm layer even in autumn: the valley evenings are much cooler than Hanoi.
Days 5–6: one night on Ha Long or Lan Ha Bay
The tourism board says most visitors book a packaged cruise including transport to and from Hanoi, and on a week this tight that is the sensible choice: the shuttle collects you in Hanoi on day five and takes you to the port your boat uses. On Ha Long Bay, the management board licenses numbered routes. When we checked on 2026-10-03, its fee page listed overnight sightseeing fees of 550,000 dong for route 2 with one night and 500,000 dong for routes 3 or 4, where one night means at most 24 hours from departure. Most packages include the fee; ask which route yours pays for.
Lan Ha Bay, on the Cat Ba side, is the quieter alternative. Bao Hai Phong describes more than 400 islands and a calmer character than busy Ha Long, and reports that the bay management on Cat Ba calls overnight Lan Ha cruises the signature of local tourism. Since late April 2026, according to the same paper, Quang Ninh and Hai Phong have run shared routes VHL3, VHL4, VHL5 and VHL6 linking the two bays, so some boats now cross between them. Check where your boat sails from and how long the transfer is before booking.
Buy only from an established cruise company or inside the port terminal. The Ha Long Bay board advises not stopping for touts on the road into Ha Long or near Tuan Chau, not hiring boats offered outside the passenger ports, and not bringing single-use plastic on board. The boat is back within 24 hours. Ask the cruise company whether it can drop you in Ninh Binh; if not, take the shuttle to Hanoi and continue south by van, car or train, which the tourism board lists as the ways to Ninh Binh. Either way, day six is a road day.

Day 7: Ninh Binh at first light, then the airport
Sleep in Tam Coc, where the tourism board says plenty of small places to stay sit among the rice fields and cycling is easy. Be at the boat pier early on day seven: at both Tam Coc and Trang An the sampans are rowed by boat people using their feet, and the board advises bringing water and a snack because each trip lasts two to three hours. Tam Coc is the river through the rice fields; Trang An adds caves and temples. Our Ninh Binh guide compares the routes.
If you have the afternoon, climb Hang Mua, about 500 steps to a viewpoint over the Tam Coc valley, or visit Hoa Lu, which the board describes as the capital in the 10th and 11th centuries and about 20 minutes by car from Trang An. Then head back: about two hours to Hanoi, and the tourism board allows about an hour from the city centre to Noi Bai. That only works with an evening flight. With a morning flight, cut the Ninh Binh night and spend the last night in Hanoi.
The seven days at a glance
This is an editorial suggestion, not a timetable. Check train times, shuttle pick-ups and the weather forecast before each move.
- Day 1 — Arrive in Hanoi: Noi Bai to the Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem Lake and dinner in the street kitchens. Night: Hanoi.
- Day 2 — Hanoi and the night train: the Temple of Literature at opening time, an afternoon in the Old Quarter, then the overnight train from Hanoi to Lao Cai. Night: train.
- Day 3 — Muong Hoa valley: road from Lao Cai to Sa Pa, then a guided walk through the terraces to a village homestay. Night: Ta Van.
- Day 4 — Back to Hanoi: a morning walk or Cat Cat, then five to six hours by van to Hanoi. Night: Hanoi.
- Day 5 — The bay: cruise shuttle from Hanoi to Ha Long or the Lan Ha side, caves, kayaking or swimming as your route allows. Night: on board.
- Day 6 — To Ninh Binh: a morning on the water, the shuttle back, then on to Tam Coc. Night: Tam Coc.
- Day 7 — Boats and home: an early boat at Tam Coc or Trang An, Hang Mua if time allows, then Hanoi and Noi Bai for an evening flight.

Weather, the swap rule and two variants
The tourism board describes Ha Long Bay with cool, clear skies from September to November, mist from December to March and an unpredictable monsoon from June to August; it recommends Hanoi from April to June and from September to December, and says Sa Pa is near-perfect in late April and lovely in early October, when the terraces turn gold just before harvest, while January can bring the occasional snowfall. Storms close the bay at short notice: in July 2026, Quang Ninh suspended permits for overnight tourist boats from midday on 3 July as Storm Maysak approached. If that happens on day five, go to Ninh Binh a day early and stay two nights. Book a cruise with clear rules on weather cancellations.
Variant one: Pu Luong instead of Sa Pa. The tourism board puts Pu Luong about 160 km south-west of Hanoi, roughly 4.5 hours by limousine van, and recommends breaking the journey in Ninh Binh or Mai Chau. The board describes rice fields, palm groves, water wheels and waterfalls, with the harvest gold in September and October, and it pairs naturally with Ninh Binh: Hanoi, Ninh Binh, two nights in Pu Luong, back to Hanoi, then the bay. You lose the high mountains but gain a much shorter road.
Variant two: Cat Ba on land. If you dislike the idea of a night on a boat, sleep two nights in Cat Ba Town and see Lan Ha Bay on a day boat from there. Our Cat Ba guide explains the ferry and cable-car routes from Hai Phong. Because it takes a night from Sa Pa or Ninh Binh, this works best on a slightly longer trip.
Check entry rules for your own passport before you book. When we checked on 2026-10-03, the UK government's travel advice said British citizens could visit Vietnam without a visa for up to 45 days for tourism or business; other nationalities have different rules.
Practical questions
Can I really fit Sa Pa, Ha Long Bay and Ninh Binh into one week?
Yes, but only with Hanoi as the hub, the overnight train for the Sa Pa leg and an evening flight home. Each place gets one night, and day four and day six are largely travel days. If you want more time in each, drop Sa Pa or swap it for Pu Luong.
Night train or bus to Sa Pa?
The tourism board calls the overnight train to Lao Cai the most popular way, about eight hours plus an hour by road to Sa Pa town; limousine vans from Hanoi take five to six hours and stop in town. This plan uses the train north, so the night covers the journey, and a daytime van back. Book train tickets on dsvn.vn.
Ha Long Bay or Lan Ha Bay for the cruise?
Ha Long has the best-known caves and the most boats; Lan Ha, on the Cat Ba side, is described by the Hai Phong press as calmer, with more than 400 islands. Since late April 2026 shared routes link the two bays. Choose on the route, the port and the transfer time from Hanoi rather than on the name.
Can I go straight from the cruise to Ninh Binh?
Ask your cruise company; some may arrange it, but we did not find an official direct service. Otherwise take the shuttle back to Hanoi and continue by van, car or train, about two hours from Hanoi.
What if storms cancel the cruise?
Go to Ninh Binh a day early and stay two nights. Quang Ninh suspends boat permits ahead of storms, as it did from 3 July 2026 for Storm Maysak, so book a cruise with clear cancellation terms and never on the last day before your flight.
Is October a good time for this route?
Yes. The tourism board describes clear, cool weather on the bay and in Hanoi from September to November and early October as the time Sa Pa's terraces turn gold before the harvest. In 2026, note that the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is closed until 2 November.
