Where to stay in Macau: peninsula, Taipa, Cotai or Coloane?
Choose the part of Macau you want to enjoy after dinner. A room near Senado Square puts the historic streets outside your evening plans; an Outer Harbour-side hotel exchanges that central setting for waterfront surroundings. Taipa suits village meals, Cotai suits a stay built around the resort, and Coloane suits a deliberate retreat. For a first visit with just one night, the peninsula is the easiest choice.

- Suggested time
- 1 night / 2 days; separate two-night alternative
- Where to stay
- One peninsula hotel near Senado Square; Taipa, Cotai and Coloane are alternative stays
- Season and timing
- Choose a base you can enjoy indoors as well as on foot; put a pool or resort day into the plan only if it is a reason for the stay.
The short answer
Book one peninsula night for a two-day first visit, then leave on day 2. Choose the room before adding optional resort visits; Hotel Sintra is a practical central example. For the transport building blocks, checked on 2026-10-16: The cash bus fare is MOP$6 per journey; bring the exact fare because buses give no change. Metered black taxis charge MOP$21 for the first 1,600 metres and MOP$2 for each further 220 metres. Cotai and a two-night stay are separate alternatives below.
The peninsula: choose the historic core or the waterfront
For the recommended one-night stay, choose the Senado side of the peninsula. Senado Square is the historic urban centre and a venue for public celebrations. The Ruins of St Paul’s preserve the façade of the Church of Mater Dei, which was destroyed by fire in 1835. Sleeping nearby lets you return to the square after the main sightseeing day instead of crossing the city again. The first-trip Macau guide helps decide what belongs in a short visit.
Hotel Sintra is a concrete central option: its own location page places Senado Square and the Ruins of St Paul’s within walking distance. Its Standard Room offers a king bed or twin beds. Select the bed arrangement and two registered adults in the booking. Read the Macau entry guide before fixing non-refundable dates.
For an Outer Harbour-side alternative, consider Rocks Hotel at Macau Fisherman’s Wharf. Its own page describes rooms with individual balconies, a gym and Vic’s Portuguese restaurant. Harbourview Hotel, in the same development, lists an indoor swimming pool and gym. Choose this side for the hotel and waterfront setting, then use public transport for the historic core; it is a separate base choice, not a second night in the model.
If steps are difficult, give the final street approach as much attention as the room: the St Paul’s staircase and the climbs towards Mount Fortress make a heritage day different from a level waterfront stroll. A taxi to the hotel door can be worth more than a room described only as central.
Book in this order: choose the arrival and departure terminals, compare the same dates and two-adult room basis across the bases, then reserve the room and crossing. Stay only in licensed accommodation; staying in an illegal one can bring a fine of up to MOP 3,000. For weekend or holiday dates, compare nightly totals before choosing a package; no fixed peak-date uplift is assumed here. Put cancellation terms, payment or deposit deadlines and checkout time beside the total when comparing offers. Sintra’s Stay & See package is one concrete restrictive example: The Stay & See package requires full prepayment; cancellation, changes and no-shows receive no refund. Bring the original payment credit card to check in for the Stay & See package; the hotel may refuse check-in without it. Those conditions concern that package; select Standard Room terms separately.
Taipa village and Cotai answer different booking questions
Rua do Cunha is a pedestrian street in the heart of Taipa village, lined with longstanding restaurants. The Taipa Houses are five green former residences along Avenida da Praia, beside Our Lady of Carmel Church and its garden. Choose a Taipa village base if the evening meal and streets around Rua do Cunha matter more than staying inside a resort. Pai Kok LRT station has a footbridge across Estrada da Baía de Nossa Senhora da Esperança; there is still a street walk from the station to your accommodation. Regency Art Hotel is a named Taipa alternative at 2 Estrada Almirante Marques Esparteiro. Its Superior Room lists an extra-large bed and an ensuite bathtub. It is a Taipa hotel choice, not a promise of accommodation on Rua do Cunha: use the named street address and the road approach rather than assuming a village doorstep. Route 26A’s chart labels the southbound stop T403 Esparteiro/Regency; northbound, the corresponding road stop is T300 Esparteiro/Lou Lim Ieok. Regency Art Hotel’s own site publishes no room rate for the Superior Room, so ask the hotel for a two-adult total for your dates before you book.
Choose Cotai when the hotel itself is part of the trip: a larger room, shopping, entertainment and time to use booked facilities. The Venetian Macao lists a Royale Deluxe Suite with a king bed and a Famiglia Suite with a king bed and children’s bunk bed. Its suites page lists bed layouts and room sizes but no guest allowance or rate, so choose the layout for your party, confirm the registered guests and the total for your dates on the booking, and ask the resort what facility access the room includes. The Taipa and Coloane guide helps plan the village outing from either base.
You can plan a resort stay around dining, shopping and entertainment. Visitors must be at least 21 to enter a Macau casino or gamble there (DICJ Law 17/2018, article 2). The restriction also covers spaces reachable only through a casino entrance. For a family visit, use public entrances and a route to your restaurant or attraction that avoids the gaming area; do not treat a resort name as permission for every part of the building. Pickpocketing and bag snatching happen in and around Macau’s casinos, especially late at night; carry only the cash you need for the day and keep your wallet and passport secure.
The Venetian publishes its own free-shuttle schedules and pickup locations. Use that resort’s transportation page for its pickup point and departure you need; a shuttle serving Cotai is not a transfer to a peninsula hotel. The Macau transport guide explains the terminals and LRT connections.

Coloane is a quiet-stay decision
Coloane makes sense when you want a village or beach setting and are willing to travel for the peninsula sights. Keep old Coloane village and Cheoc Van beach distinct when reading hotel addresses. Lord Stow’s original bakery is on the village square; a beach hotel is a different base.
Pousada de Coloane gives a concrete beach alternative: its own site places it on Cheoc Van beach and describes sea-facing rooms and a Portuguese restaurant. Choose it for a slower stay rather than for a one-night circuit of the historic centre. The hotel’s pool page carries an undated reopening note, so no pool availability is promised here.
For a two-night alternative, stay both nights in one base and depart on day 3: peninsula for two heritage mornings, Cotai for a resort day plus a village outing, or Coloane for a beach and village break with one peninsula excursion. Do not split a short stay just to try two hotels. These alternatives add a room night and extra local journeys and are outside the one-night cost model.

A one-night peninsula stay, from arrival to departure
This suggested route assumes a morning arrival and an evening departure on day 2. Keep exactly one overnight stay. Day 2 includes a return to the peninsula for bags before the departure transfer: settle the hotel’s bag-storage arrangement and collection time before booking the crossing or flight. If the return and your check-in deadline leave too little time, omit Coloane and keep Taipa as the shorter outing. The route is not a timed airport connection.
For an evening Macanese meal, African chicken at António is an alternative Taipa dinner when your day-2 departure is late enough. Otherwise have it at lunch and keep the last part of the day near the departure terminal. A Lorcha’s peninsula dinner is Portuguese; the two traditions should not be treated as interchangeable labels.
- Day 1: arrive at your chosen terminal, reach the peninsula hotel and walk Senado Square, St Paul’s and Mount Fortress. Finish with seafood rice or stewed oxtail at A Lorcha near Barra; it closes Tuesdays, so move that meal to another day when relevant. Sleep one night on the peninsula.
- Day 2: leave bags at the peninsula hotel only by prior arrangement, then take Transmac 26A southbound from M172 Praça Ferreira Amaral to T364 Est. Baía N. S. Esperança/Quartel, the stop that the chart marks as an LRT connection on the road where Pai Kok station stands, for Taipa village and lunch at António. For Coloane, reboard 26A southbound and leave at C660 Assoc. de M. de Coloane. Return on route 26 northbound from C686 Vila de Coloane/Posto de Saúde to M198 Av. Panorâmica do Lago Sai Van/Ponte-Cais da Barra, then make the street journey to the hotel, collect bags and continue to the departure terminal. The street walks between stops, António and the hotel, and the terminal transfer are additional legs; DSAT does not publish walking distances for them. Replacing Coloane with Cotai is an optional change, not another compulsory stop.
- Museum alternative: The Taipa Houses open 10:00–19:00, with last admission at 18:30, and close on Mondays. Admission to the Taipa Houses is free. Walk the village on Monday instead of planning interior access.

Match the hotel address to the arrival terminal
Public buses link the Macau Peninsula, Taipa, Coloane and Macau International Airport. From Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal, use the signed bus stops or taxi rank for your peninsula hotel. For a Sintra-area stay, keep a road transfer in the plan rather than expecting an LRT station at Senado Square. Hotel Sintra’s own location page lists drive times of 25 minutes from Macau International Airport, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge and Taipa Ferry Terminal, and 10 minutes from the Macau Maritime Ferry Terminal.
For Macau International Airport, Airport station connects directly to the passenger terminal at Macau International Airport. Take the Barra direction for the southwest peninsula, then continue by bus or taxi to the central hotel. Taipa Ferry Terminal has its own directly connected LRT station; it is not Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal. Pai Kok serves the Taipa side, while Cotai West and Cotai East are useful station names to compare with your resort’s entrance.
For a bridge arrival, the HZMB shuttle ends at Macao Port, with a further local journey to the hotel. Mainland China needs its own entry check; this site does not cover it. The Hong Kong to Macau guide covers crossing choices; use the terminal printed on your ticket when choosing the last mile.
For comparing the island bases, the DSAT charts checked on 2026-10-16 give actual road connections by direction. Transmac 26A southbound runs from M172 Praça Ferreira Amaral through T403 Esparteiro/Regency, T364 Est. Baía N. S. Esperança/Quartel and C660 Assoc. de M. de Coloane to the Cheoc Van beach stops; northbound it serves C659 Vila de Coloane, T363 Istmo/Venetian and T365 Pai Kok/Galaxy before M172. Route 26 northbound runs from C686 Vila de Coloane/Posto de Saúde through T363 Istmo/Venetian, T406 Rotunda do Aeroporto/Wai Long, T345 Taipa Ferry Terminal and M198 Barra; T356 Aeroporto de Macau is served southbound only. These are stop sequences; neither DSAT nor the Macao Government Tourism Office publishes bus journey times or fixed taxi totals between a terminal and a hotel, so use the meter extras below and ask your hotel how long the transfer takes.
Route 26A’s terminal departures run from 06:00 to 00:30 towards Hac Sa and from 06:00 to 01:00 towards Bacia Norte do Patane. Its published frequency range is 8–15 minutes Monday–Saturday except public holidays, and 10–16 minutes on Sundays and public holidays. Route 26 leaves its starting terminus from 06:00 to 23:30 daily; published frequencies range from 16–25 minutes Monday–Saturday except public holidays, and 20–25 minutes on Sundays and public holidays. Terminal departure spans are not first and last departures at intermediate stops, which DSAT’s charts do not publish.
Taxi extras checked on 2026-10-16: Each item of luggage carried in a taxi’s boot costs an extra MOP$3. Boarding a taxi at Macau International Airport or Taipa Ferry Terminal adds MOP$8 to the metered fare. A taxi from the Macau Peninsula to Coloane has a MOP$5 surcharge; from Taipa to Coloane the surcharge is MOP$2. These are extras to the meter, not fixed prices for a hotel transfer.
At Macau’s No. 8 signal, stay indoors as far as possible and suspend outdoor and marine activities. Follow the Macao Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau for current warnings.

What the one-night model costs, with the room to add
The model is two adults sharing one private double or twin room on the peninsula for one night, with a morning arrival and evening departure. Prices checked on 2026-10-16 support the local transport allowance below. It is an allowance for cash-bus boardings, not a terminal-to-hotel fixed fare or a complete trip total.
A two-adult room price is not included in this budget. Hotel Sintra’s own site lists the Standard Room’s king or twin beds but no room-only rate, so ask the hotel or use its booking page for a two-adult total with its charges and cancellation terms, and add that one private double or twin room to your budget.
- Local buses: MOP$96 for two. Two adults × eight cash boardings each × MOP$6. Allocate three boardings to day 2’s 26A peninsula–Taipa, 26A Taipa–Coloane and 26 Coloane–peninsula loop. The other five are an allowance for arrival, the Barra meal, hotel or terminal connections and changes. They do not establish a direct bus from every hotel door. Every extra boarding adds MOP$6 per person.
- Visits: MOP$0 in the core model. The plan uses outdoor streets and the St Paul’s façade; Taipa Houses admission is free. Paid resort attractions, pools sold as day access and museum additions are separate choices.
- Supported subtotal: MOP$96, before the room. The day-2 island loop alone uses three boardings per adult: 2 × 3 × MOP$6 = MOP$36. The remaining MOP$60 is the five-boardings-per-adult allowance above. Choosing rail or taxis changes this total; subtract the bus journeys replaced and add the rail fare or taxi meter and supplements.
- Not included: the one hotel night and its charges, meals and drinks, flights, Hong Kong crossings, taxis, optional paid experiences and shopping. The separate two-night and Cotai alternatives have no combined total here.
Practical questions
Where should I stay for a first one-night visit?
Choose the peninsula near Senado Square. Use day 1 for the historic core and a peninsula dinner, then visit Taipa and, if departure allows, Coloane on day 2. Hotel Sintra is a real central example; choose a private king or twin room for your party.
Is Cotai better for families who do not gamble?
Choose Cotai when the room, resort facilities, shopping and entertainment are reasons for the stay. Check the booked room’s guest allowance and the entrances to the facilities you want. The casino admission restriction does not describe the entire resort as a gaming area.
Should I change hotels for a two-night stay?
Usually keep both nights in one base and leave on day 3. Add a heritage day from the peninsula, a resort day from Cotai, or a quieter village and beach day from Coloane. The two-night option is separate from this guide’s one-night model.
Does the MOP$96 allowance cover the hotel?
No. It covers sixteen cash-bus boardings across two adults. Add one booked private double or twin room and its charges, plus the excluded meals, crossing or flights and optional experiences. It is a transport subtotal, not a complete stay price.
Is the LRT beside the historic centre hotels?
Barra serves the southwest peninsula, with a road leg onward to a Senado-area hotel. Airport and Taipa Ferry Terminal have directly connected stations. Match your hotel entrance to the station or bus stop before comparing accommodation. Route 26A serves Esparteiro/Regency southbound and Pai Kok/Galaxy and Istmo/Venetian northbound; route 26 northbound returns from Coloane through the Venetian stop, the airport roundabout, Taipa Ferry Terminal and Barra.
