First trip to Macau: one night, two days and more than casinos
Macau rewards an overnight stay. The peninsula gives you temple gates, church façades and squares; Taipa gives you village lanes and Macanese food; Coloane gives you a former fishing village and a slower afternoon. Cotai adds the scale and spectacle of the resorts, but it need not set the whole trip. Spend one night on the peninsula, walk its historic core on arrival day, and use the second day for Taipa and Coloane before leaving.

- Suggested time
- 1 night / 2 days; depart on day 2
- Where to stay
- One peninsula night near Senado Square; Hotel Sintra on Avenida de D. João IV is a practical named option
- Season and timing
- October and November bring mild temperatures and dry weather in Macau. Macau’s typhoon season runs from April to November, with July to September the peak period.
The short answer
Book one night on the peninsula near Senado Square for a two-day visit, departing on day 2. Reserve the room first, then arrange an early arrival and a late departure; for the MFM version below, choose a flight departing at 18:00 or later. Checked on 16 October 2026: The cash bus fare is MOP$6 per journey; bring the exact fare because buses give no change. Macao Museum admission costs MOP$15 per adult. Walk the historic core on day 1, then take buses to Taipa and Coloane on day 2 with a light overnight bag. A second night is an optional extension for a slower visit.
Choose your night before choosing your sights
For this first visit, stay on the peninsula. Hotel Sintra is on Avenida de D. João IV in Macau. Its location suits an evening in the historic core, then a bus south on departure day. Pack one light overnight bag: carry it through day 2 so you can travel straight from Coloane to the airport without returning to the hotel.
Taipa suits a longer food-led stay, while Cotai suits travellers who want a particular resort, shopping or entertainment. Neither is necessary for the historic walk. Do not switch hotels for this short visit: that would use time you could spend in a village. The Macau where-to-stay guide compares these bases in more detail.
Day 1: the peninsula from Senado Square to A-Ma
The Historic Centre of Macao brings together monuments and urban squares in the city centre and joined the World Heritage List in 2005. Senado Square is the historic urban centre and a venue for public celebrations. Follow the Historic Centre walk, starting at Senado Square, then make your way through the historic streets to the Ruins of St Paul’s. The Ruins of St Paul’s preserve the façade of the Church of Mater Dei, which was destroyed by fire in 1835. The façade is a satisfying destination in itself; the crypt behind it adds a quieter interior stop.
Mount Fortress was the city’s principal military defence structure, built with the Jesuits between 1617 and 1626. The Macao Museum explores the city’s history and the lives of its different communities. Put the museum after the Ruins if you want context before continuing through the city. This is the paid stop included in the model; it is optional if you prefer to keep the day outdoors.
Continue south through the historic core towards A-Ma Temple. Mandarin’s House is the traditional Chinese residential compound of the writer Zheng Guanying. A-Ma Temple predates the city of Macau. These offer a different side of the city from the church façade: a Chinese home and a place of worship. Leave room for a peninsula dinner at A Lorcha rather than trying to fit Cotai into this first day.
Visitor information checked on 16 October 2026: The Museum of Sacred Art and Crypt is free to enter; it opens 09:00–18:00 with last admission at 17:30, and closes at 14:00 on Tuesdays. The Macao Museum opens 10:00–18:00, with last entry at 17:30; it closes on Mondays except public holidays. The Macao Museum is free on Tuesdays and the 15th of each month. Mandarin’s House opens 10:00–18:00, with last admission at 17:30; it closes on Wednesdays except public holidays. A-Ma Temple opens 07:00–18:00. Dom Pedro V Theatre is temporarily closed. On a museum closing day, spend the extra time on the streets and squares instead of moving the departure date.

Day 2: Taipa village, Coloane and an optional Cotai stop
Check out with your light overnight bag and begin in Taipa. Take Transmac 26A towards Hac Sa from M172 Praça Ferreira Amaral into Taipa. DSAT’s route chart names no stop for Taipa village or Avenida da Praia, so check the Transport Bureau’s route planner for the best stop before you go. Aim to be in Taipa for the houses’ 10:00 opening; this is the sightseeing plan, not an intermediate bus departure time. The Taipa Houses are five green former residences along Avenida da Praia, beside Our Lady of Carmel Church and its garden. The Macanese Living Museum in the Taipa Houses recreates scenes of daily life from Macau’s past. The houses make the village worth more than a quick lunch stop: visit the museum before sitting down to eat.
Rua do Cunha is a pedestrian street in the heart of Taipa village, lined with longstanding restaurants. Walk Rua do Cunha and the lanes around it, then have a Portuguese or Macanese lunch at António. Bacalhau à Brás and African chicken give you two different meal choices here. Keep the lunch leisurely; this is a village visit, rather than a dash through a shopping street. Macanese cuisine combines Portuguese and Chinese cooking with ingredients and seasonings from Europe, South America, Africa and South East Asia; Portuguese cuisine is a separate tradition, also widely available in Macau. Choose a dish for what it is, rather than treating the two names as interchangeable.
Coloane’s old fishing-village streets have cafés, art spaces and murals. After lunch, board 26A towards Hac Sa again at a southbound Taipa stop and get off at C660 Assoc. de M. de Coloane. Walk the old lanes, then leave Coloane by 14:00 in this plan to keep a generous margin before the selected flight. The tourism office lists murals at Avenida de Cinco de Outubro, Largo do Estaleiro and Rua do Caetano: the Largo do Estaleiro mural depicts fishermen returning from the sea. Finish at Lord Stow’s original bakery on the town square. This is the quieter part of the route, with a food stop and street life rather than a resort lobby. For MFM, board route 26 northbound at C686 Vila de Coloane/Posto de Saúde and get off at T406 Rotunda do Aeroporto/Wai Long. T356 Aeroporto de Macau serves only the opposite direction of route 26, so do not use it for this leg.
Cotai is a reclaimed area, distinct from Taipa and Coloane. Cotai is an optional extension to the direct airport route. If your departure leaves enough time, make one short public-space stop: the Shoppes at Venetian provide a shopping circuit, while the tourism office describes the Spectacle at MGM COTAI as a vast column-free interior. Choose one, rather than crossing several resorts. For an early departure, skip Cotai and retain the two villages. For the Shoppes at Venetian extension, take northbound 26 from C686 to T363 Est. do Istmo/Venetian, visit the shopping area, then reboard northbound 26 at T363 for T406 Rotunda do Aeroporto. This adds one bus boarding per person; skip it if it would erode your airport margin.
Visitor information checked on 16 October 2026: The Taipa Houses open 10:00–19:00, with last admission at 18:30, and close on Mondays. Admission to the Taipa Houses is free. On Monday, walk the setting and village instead. Visitors must be at least 21 to enter a Macau casino or gamble there. The age restriction also covers spaces accessible only through a casino entrance; keep any younger travellers on routes through the resort’s separate public areas. Pickpocketing and bag snatching happen in and around Macau’s casinos, especially late at night; carry only the cash you need for the day and keep your wallet and passport secure.
Make time for the local food
What to eat and where to look
Bacalhau à Brás
A Portuguese cod dish mixed with fried onions, fine-cut potatoes and eggs, with salad alongside. It makes a substantial Taipa lunch.
- Where to look
- Try bacalhau à Brás at António in Taipa: cod mixed with fried onions, fine-cut potatoes and eggs, served with salad.
- Fit it into your day
- Choose this or the African chicken during the Taipa village stop.
African chicken
The spiced peanut-and-coconut sauce makes this a useful contrast with the Portuguese cod dishes on the same route; António serves it with gratin potatoes.
- Where to look
- António in Taipa serves African chicken with a peanut and coconut spice sauce and gratin potatoes.
- Fit it into your day
- A savoury Taipa lunch choice, rather than another bakery stop.
Fish, shellfish, eggs, peanuts and other allergens occur across these dishes; ask the restaurant about your own requirements.
Portuguese seafood rice
A rice-and-seafood meal for the peninsula dinner, contrasting with the Taipa cod or chicken lunch.
- Where to look
- Try Portuguese seafood rice at A Lorcha on Avenida do Almirante Sérgio in Macau.
- Fit it into your day
- Use A Lorcha after the A-Ma side of the peninsula walk.
Stewed oxtail
A slow-cooked meat option for anyone choosing a different peninsula dinner from seafood rice.
- Where to look
- A Lorcha on Avenida do Almirante Sérgio in Macau serves stewed oxtail.
- Fit it into your day
- Choose it at the same peninsula dinner; the route does not require two dinners at A Lorcha.
Portuguese egg tart
Keep one sweet stop for Coloane after the village walk. The original bakery makes a useful destination at the end of the lanes.
- Where to look
- For an egg tart in Coloane, visit Lord Stow’s original bakery at 1 Rua do Tassara on the town square.
- Fit it into your day
- An afternoon stop in Coloane before your onward bus.
Entry: Macau has its own border check
Check the Public Security Police Force’s nationality and travel-document list before paying for transport: permission to enter Hong Kong is separate from permission to enter Macau. The dedicated Macau entry guide covers the less common document cases. Entry information checked on 16 October 2026: Your passport or accepted travel document must be valid for at least 90 days beyond your intended stay in Macau.
British citizens holding a British passport can stay in Macau visa-free for up to 6 months. Passport holders from EU or Schengen member states can stay in Macau visa-free for up to 90 days, except Cyprus passport holders, who can stay for up to 3 months. Japanese and South Korean passport holders can stay in Macau visa-free for up to 90 days.
US ordinary-passport holders and Canadian and Australian passport holders can stay in Macau visa-free for up to 30 days. New Zealand passport holders can stay in Macau visa-free for up to 3 months. Visitors from Bangladesh, Nepal, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Vietnam must obtain a Macau visa in advance through a Chinese embassy or consulate.
Visitors must hold an onward or return ticket unless they can prove that they live in mainland China or Hong Kong; this exemption does not apply to Chinese or Hong Kong SAR passport holders transiting Macau to another destination. Visitors must be able to show means of support of at least MOP$5,000 for a stay of up to 7 days, MOP$10,000 for 8–14 days, MOP$15,000 for 15–21 days, or MOP$20,000 for a longer stay. At Macau immigration, officers check your identity against your travel document or biometric data and record your entry. Follow the stay limit issued at immigration, which cannot extend beyond 90 days before your passport or accepted travel document expires. Passengers do not need to complete an Arrival Card for Macau; immigration issues a printed Slip of Authorization to Stay showing the stay limit, which you should keep during your visit.
On arrival in Macau, declare cash and bearer negotiable instruments worth MOP$120,000 or more by taking a completed declaration form through the red channel. Do not bring e-cigarettes, e-liquids, heated-tobacco products or herbal cigarettes into Macau; bringing them in is prohibited and fined. Macau’s own ban on e-cigarettes and heated-tobacco products, into or out of Macau, has applied since 5 December 2022 and also covers nicotine-free products and components. Macau applies zero tolerance to drugs: bringing in or possessing any illegal drug can lead to a long prison sentence. Macau’s national security law applies to foreign visitors and to activities inside and outside Macau, and political statements, including on social media, can fall within it and lead to criminal charges. The police can access social media and private communications to gather evidence of national security offences. Do not take part in political activity or demonstrations in Macau, and follow the instructions of local security forces. Check your government’s current Macau travel advice before departure.

Arrivals, money and moving between districts
Public buses link the Macau Peninsula, Taipa, Coloane and Macau International Airport. Macau International Airport (MFM) is the air gateway. Airport station connects directly to the passenger terminal at Macau International Airport. Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal serves the peninsula; Taipa Ferry Terminal serves the southern side. HZMB Macao Port is a separate arrival point, so select it explicitly in the transport planner. Mainland China needs its own entry check; this site does not cover it.
For the model arrival, take Transmac route 26 northbound from T406 Rotunda do Aeroporto/Wai Long towards the peninsula, then continue to your hotel on foot. Route 26A from M172 Praça Ferreira Amaral handles the next day’s Taipa and Coloane legs. Walk within the historic core and each village. DSAT’s route charts give stop names but no walking distances or journey times, so use the Transport Bureau’s route planner to choose the peninsula stop nearest your hotel and to check journey times. The Macau transport guide explains payment choices and the wider network.
Bus timetables checked on 16 October 2026: Route 26A’s terminal departures run from 06:00 to 00:30 towards Hac Sa and from 06:00 to 01:00 towards Bacia Norte do Patane. Its published frequency range is 8–15 minutes Monday–Saturday except public holidays, and 10–16 minutes on Sundays and public holidays. Route 26 leaves its starting terminus from 06:00 to 23:30 daily; published frequencies range from 16–25 minutes Monday–Saturday except public holidays, and 20–25 minutes on Sundays and public holidays. Terminal departure spans are not first and last departures at intermediate stops; intermediate-stop departures depend on traffic. The spans apply to the routes’ starting termini, not to M172, the Taipa and Coloane stops or the airport; use live stop information during the day. The 14:00 Coloane departure target above is an editorial buffer for an 18:00-or-later flight, not a promised bus journey time.
Transport prices checked on 16 October 2026: The cash bus fare is MOP$6 per journey; bring the exact fare because buses give no change. Adult LRT single-journey fares are MOP$6 for up to three chargeable stations, MOP$8 for up to six, MOP$10 for up to nine and MOP$12 for up to twelve. The LRT section between Barra and Ocean counts as two stations when calculating fares. LRT is useful for airport, ferry-terminal and Cotai journeys; it does not replace the street walk through the historic centre. LRT single-journey tokens for passengers aged 12 and over are sold at station ticket machines and customer service centres and are valid on the day of issue. LRT ticket machines accept cash and LRT cards, while add-value machines accept cash only; both accept cash only in patacas.
The pataca (MOP) is Macau’s official currency. Carry patacas for cash payments. UnionPay, American Express, JCB, Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted in Macau; card issuers may charge transaction fees. LRT customer service centres accept patacas and Hong Kong dollars at one to one and give change only in patacas; HK$10 coins are not accepted. That exchange rule is specific to LRT customer service centres, so do not assume every business follows it. Macau Pass can pay for public transport and purchases at convenience stores, some bakeries and vending machines.
For a taxi alternative, fares checked on 16 October 2026: Metered black taxis charge MOP$21 for the first 1,600 metres and MOP$2 for each further 220 metres. Waiting at the passenger’s request costs MOP$2 for every 55 seconds. Each item of luggage carried in a taxi’s boot costs an extra MOP$3. Boarding a taxi at Macau International Airport or Taipa Ferry Terminal adds MOP$8 to the metered fare. A taxi from the Macau Peninsula to Coloane has a MOP$5 surcharge; from Taipa to Coloane the surcharge is MOP$2. The meter, waiting and supplements determine the final cost; the budget below uses buses instead.
Arriving from Hong Kong and choosing a weather fallback
From central Hong Kong, a ferry puts you at a Macau city terminal; the bridge shuttle runs port to port and needs separate access at both ends. Both involve immigration checks. For a peninsula-first visit, consider TurboJET to Outer Harbour: TurboJET’s Hong Kong–Macau crossings take about 60 minutes. From 16 October 2026, TurboJET departures from Hong Kong Macau Ferry Terminal in Sheung Wan to Macau Outer Harbour run from 07:30 to 22:30. From 16 October 2026, TurboJET departures from Macau Outer Harbour to Sheung Wan run from 07:30 to 23:00. Check TurboJET’s booking system for the fare from Hong Kong and for Outer Harbour sailings. For Taipa, Cotai Water Jet takes about one hour between Hong Kong Macau Ferry Terminal and Macau Taipa Ferry Terminal. Buy Cotai Water Jet tickets through its website, smartphone app or terminal ticket offices; phone and email bookings are unavailable. Collect Cotai Water Jet tickets at least 30 minutes before departure.
Cotai Water Jet information checked on 16 October 2026: Cotai Water Jet’s Sheung Wan–Macau Taipa timetable ran from 07:30 to 22:30. Cotai Water Jet’s Macau Taipa–Sheung Wan timetable ran from 09:00 to 23:59. Cotai Class tickets bought in Hong Kong cost HK$192 for weekday day sailings, HK$209 for weekend or public-holiday day sailings and HK$242 for night sailings. Cotai Class tickets bought in Macau cost MOP$192 for weekday day sailings, MOP$209 for weekend or public-holiday day sailings and MOP$242 for night sailings. Cotai Water Jet’s night fares start at 17:10 from October to January, 17:40 in February, March and September, and 18:00 from April to August. These crossing fares are separate from the MFM arrival model below. For terminal access, ticket conditions and the full comparison, use the Hong Kong-to-Macau crossing guide.
Bridge shuttle fares and service checked on 16 October 2026: The HZMB port shuttle runs between Hong Kong Port and Macau Port 24 hours a day. The Hong Kong Transport Department lists HZMB shuttle departures every 5 minutes at peak times, 10–15 minutes off peak and 15–30 minutes overnight. For departures from Hong Kong: the Hong Kong–Macau HZMB shuttle’s standard single fare from Hong Kong was HK$65 between 06:00 and 23:59 and HK$70 between 00:00 and 05:59. For departures from Macau: the Macau–Hong Kong HZMB shuttle’s standard single fare from Macau was MOP$65 or HK$65 between 06:00 and 23:59, and MOP$70 or HK$70 between 00:00 and 05:59. At HZMB Hong Kong Port, complete departure clearance in the Passenger Clearance Building before taking the shuttle to Macau Port. At Macau Port, buy HZMB shuttle tickets from the terminal ticket office, self-service machines or online ticketing system. These are port-shuttle fares, with city access at both ends extra; choose this option for its round-the-clock service, rather than comparing it with a city-terminal ferry on fare alone. Allow time for both borders; no port-to-port or city-to-city journey-time estimate is included here.
Typhoons hit Macau regularly between April and November and can cause flooding and landslides; public offices shut when Typhoon Signal No. 8 is issued, and from Signal No. 3 you should stay away from the shore and avoid water activities. Follow the Macao Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau’s warnings and local authorities’ instructions, and check with the operator before any ferry crossing. Cotai Water Jet suspends all sailings when Typhoon Signal No. 8 or higher is hoisted. Cotai Water Jet may suspend services for safety when the Hong Kong Observatory and Macao Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau announce Strong Wind Signal No. 3. At Macau’s No. 8 signal, stay indoors as far as possible and suspend outdoor and marine activities. In ordinary rain, trade some of the walking for the Macao Museum, Taipa Houses when open, or one resort shopping stop; in a severe warning, follow local instructions rather than the sightseeing plan.

The priced parts of a one-night visit
This model is for two adults sharing one private room for one night, arriving and departing through MFM, carrying a light overnight bag on day 2 and visiting the Macao Museum. Prices checked on 16 October 2026. Four direct bus journeys cost MOP$48 for the pair; two standard adult museum tickets add MOP$30, giving a priced subtotal of MOP$78. The museum’s free-admission days reduce that subtotal by MOP$30.
Hotel Sintra’s own Stay & See package, valid from 7 July 2025 to 31 December 2026, starts at MOP$750 for one night, plus 10% service charge and 5% tourism tax, and includes Macau Tower Observation Deck tickets for 2 adults. Full prepayment is required and the booking cannot be cancelled or amended. The hotel’s page names no room category and no number of guests for that price, so ask the hotel for a two-adult room quote and keep it separate from the subtotals here.
The optional Cotai shopping stop adds one route 26 boarding per person, MOP$12 for the pair, raising the priced subtotal to MOP$90. The direct Coloane–airport route is the baseline; no hotel luggage-collection trip is needed.
For a Hong Kong ferry variant, use Cotai Water Jet into and out of Taipa, with route 26 northbound from T345 Taipa Ferry Terminal towards the peninsula on arrival and from C686 to T345 on departure. Two weekday daytime outbound Cotai Class tickets bought in Hong Kong add HK$384; two night-sailing return tickets bought in Macau add MOP$484. With the same four local bus journeys and museum, the priced components are HK$384 plus MOP$562 for two adults. These use the fare categories above and do not imply live seat availability.
Not included: the room, meals, flights, Hong Kong city travel to or from the ferry terminal, shopping, other admissions, or taxis/LRT replacing the model buses.
- Day 1, MFM → peninsula: route 26 northbound, T406 Rotunda do Aeroporto/Wai Long → a peninsula stop near your hotel; two cash fares, MOP$12. Continue on foot to the hotel and historic core.
- Day 1, Macao Museum: two standard adult admissions, MOP$30; walk the rest of the peninsula route.
- Day 2, peninsula → Taipa village: 26A towards Hac Sa, M172 Praça Ferreira Amaral → a Taipa stop; two cash fares, MOP$12.
- Day 2, Taipa → Coloane: 26A towards Hac Sa, a southbound Taipa stop → C660 Assoc. de M. de Coloane; two cash fares, MOP$12.
- Day 2, Coloane → MFM: 26 northbound, C686 Vila de Coloane/Posto de Saúde → T406 Rotunda do Aeroporto/Wai Long; two cash fares, MOP$12. Leave Coloane by 14:00 for this itinerary’s 18:00-or-later flight; earlier flights need a shorter sightseeing day.
Practical questions
Is one night enough for Macau?
One night gives you two sightseeing days if you arrive early and depart late: the peninsula on day 1, Taipa and Coloane on day 2. Choose a second night if you want longer meals or a resort evening. This guide’s model counts one room night and departure on day 2.
Is Macau worth visiting without gambling?
Yes. The historic core, Macao Museum, Taipa Houses, village lanes and Macanese and Portuguese meals fill the route. Cotai is a short optional shopping or public-space stop; casino entry is not part of the itinerary.
Can I use my Hong Kong entry permission for Macau?
No. Check Macau’s own Public Security Police Force nationality and travel-document rules before booking; returning to Hong Kong involves another entry check there. Keep those checks separate from the transport ticket.
Should I stay on the peninsula or Cotai?
For this one-night first visit, choose the peninsula near the historic core and keep the same base throughout. Choose Cotai instead only if a particular resort or entertainment booking is the purpose of the stay; it changes the travel needed for day 1.
How much does this two-day Macau visit cost?
The budget section prices four direct bus journeys per adult and two standard adult Macao Museum tickets at MOP$78 for two adults, before the room, meals and flights. The optional Cotai stop adds MOP$12 for the pair; museum free-admission days remove MOP$30.
