Namhae travel guide: Daraengi terraces, German Village and Boriam
Namhae is not one sight but a county of islands at the western end of South Gyeongsang, wrapped in more than 300 kilometres of coastline and joined to the mainland by bridges rather than ferries. Its best-known images are all on the coast: rice terraces stepping down a cliff at Gacheon Daraengi Village, red-roofed German-style houses above Mulgeon harbour, and Boriam hermitage clinging to the granite of Geumsan above Sangju beach. They sit on different sides of the island, linked by winding coastal roads, which is why Namhae rewards a car and a night or two far more than a rushed day trip. In between are a 300-year-old windbreak forest, a pterosaur-track shoreline, a hilltop temple founded in 802, and a table built around fat local anchovies.

- Suggested time
- 1–2 nights
- Where to stay
- Sangju Silver Sand Beach (for Boriam and Geumsan), or the German Village area of Mulgeon-ri on the east coast
- Season and timing
- Spring is the classic drive: VisitKorea singles out the Seolcheon coastal road for its cherry blossoms and mustard flowers. Summer is beach season at Sangju, which VisitKorea says can draw up to a million visitors. Autumn brings the German Village Oktoberfest — in 2026 it runs from 9 to 11 October — and foliage at Yongmunsa. In June, the 2026 Garlic & Korean Beef Festival ran from 11 to 14 June. A sunrise at Boriam is worth planning in any season; check the forecast the night before.
The short answer
Give Namhae one night if you are driving between Yeosu and Tongyeong, two if you want a sunrise on Geumsan and an unhurried coast. Rent a car — VisitKorea's own driving guide singles out islands and small towns with inconvenient public transport as the case for it, and Namhae's highlights are spread around the island. Sleep at Sangju Silver Sand Beach for Boriam at dawn, or in a German Village guesthouse for the east coast. Do the west and south on day one (Daraengi Village, then Sangju), Boriam early on day two, then the German Village, the Mulgeon forest and the Treasure Island Observatory before leaving by the Changseon side towards Sacheon and Tongyeong, or by the Namhae Bridge towards Hadong. The nearest airport is Sacheon (HIN), with flights from Gimpo and Jeju and rental-car desks; without a car, Seoul Nambu Terminal has direct intercity buses to Namhae, but expect to rely on taxis once there.
How to plan the island: a loop, not a line
Namhae County is two main islands — Namhae itself and Changseon to the east — and, as VisitKorea puts it, a coastline of more than 302 kilometres surrounded by 70 smaller islands. Two road links decide how you arrive and leave. In the north, the Namhae Bridge crosses the strait at Noryang from the Hadong side; in the east, the Samcheonpo bridges connect Changseon to Sacheon, the side you want for Tongyeong and Jinju. Use one for the way in and the other for the way out and the island becomes a natural loop on a south-coast road trip.
The main sights are deliberately spread out: Daraengi Village is on the south-west coast in Nam-myeon, Geumsan and Boriam rise behind Sangju in the south, and the German Village and Mulgeon forest face east in Samdong-myeon. The Seolcheon coastal road, which VisitKorea describes as 35 kilometres from Noryang in Seolcheon-myeon to Jijok in Samdong-myeon, links the bridge with the east coast.
That geography is why we recommend a car. VisitKorea's guide to driving in Korea says short-term visitors can rent with an international driving permit if they are over 21 and carry their passport, that rental fees must be paid by credit card in the driver's name, and that Google Maps navigation does not work in Korea — use Naver Map or Kakao Map. If you cannot drive, Namhae is still reachable by intercity bus from Seoul Nambu Terminal, but plan fewer sights per day and budget for taxis.
Gacheon Daraengi Village and the Jiget-gil coast
Gacheon Daraengi Village is the reason most people put Namhae on the map. VisitKorea describes 108 steps of terraced paddies, built of stone and soil, on a steep slope at the foot of Seolheulsan above the sea. From a distance they look like a maze; paths run between them down to the shore. VisitKorea allows about an hour to see the key points, including Amsubawi Rock and the pebble beach at Mondol. It lists the village as open all year with parking.
This is a working farming village, not a theme park. Stay on the paths, keep off the paddy walls, and do not photograph into houses.
If you have a spare day, or someone to pick you up at the end, walk the Namhae Barae-gil, the island's coastal trail network. VisitKorea describes the Daraengi Jiget-gil section as 16 kilometres along the coast from Pyeongsan port, past Sachon Beach, to Daraengi Village, taking around five hours. It passes pebble beaches and terraced fields, and finishing at Daraengi means ending at the island's best view.

Make time for the local food
What to eat and where to look

Myeolchi ssambap (anchovy and leaf-wrap rice)
Large, plump anchovies are braised in a small amount of sweet and savoury seasoning and eaten wrapped in fresh leaves with rice, often with pickled garlic; the leftover sauce is mixed into the rice. VisitKorea notes that restaurants specialising in it are common in Namhae and Tongyeong, and Namhae's anchovies are, it says, bigger and fattier than most.
- Where to look
- Seafood restaurants along the east coast around Mijo-myeon and Samdong-myeon, and in the island's small harbour villages.
- Fit it into your day
- Lunch on the east-coast day, between the German Village and the Mulgeon forest.
Made with whole fish in a seasoned sauce; not suitable for vegetarians.
Myeolchi hoe (sliced raw anchovy)
Fresh anchovies dressed with chojang, the vinegared chilli sauce. VisitKorea lists Mijo Restaurant on Mijo-ro in Mijo-myeon as a dedicated anchovy restaurant serving myeolchi hoe, braised cutlassfish and fried anchovies, and Ohburim on Dongbu-daero near the German Village for a set menu of raw anchovy, braised cutlassfish and tteokgalbi.
- Where to look
- Mijo Restaurant (232 Mijo-ro) and Ohburim (1126 Dongbu-daero, Samdong-myeon); VisitKorea notes that Ohburim's set menu needs a reservation.
- Fit it into your day
- A seafood dinner on the east coast if you are sleeping at the German Village.
Raw fish — skip it if you are pregnant or have a weak stomach; call ahead for Ohburim's set.
Namhae yuja (citrus) sweets
Namhae's yuja citrus is known, VisitKorea says, for its thin skin and fragrant flesh, and goes into tea, preserves, bread and cream. VisitKorea's shopping feature (last updated in December 2023) highlights an anchovy-shaped bread with yuja cream and a shop where you can taste yuja preserves before buying.
- Where to look
- Bakeries and shops on Namseo-daero in Nam-myeon, on the road to Daraengi Village.
- Fit it into your day
- An afternoon snack or a gift to take home on the west-coast day.
Shops in the 2023 feature may have changed; check before making a detour.
Garlic and Korean beef (hanwoo)
Garlic and hanwoo are the county's signature farm products, celebrated at the Namhae Garlic & Korean Beef Festival, which in 2026 ran from 11 to 14 June at the Namhae Museum of Exile Literature.
- Where to look
- Grill restaurants in the island's towns; the festival in June.
- Fit it into your day
- A barbecue dinner on a night when you are not eating seafood.
Festival dates change every year; check VisitKorea for the next edition.
Geumsan, Boriam and Sangju beach
Geumsan (704 metres) is part of Hallyeohaesang National Park, Korea's first marine national park. VisitKorea explains that the mountain was once called Bogwangsan after a temple founded by the monk Wonhyo, and that Taejo, founder of the Joseon dynasty, renamed it Geumsan — 'silk mountain' — after a 100-day prayer he believed had helped him to the throne. Its granite outcrops tower above the bay of Sangju.
Atop the mountain, Boriam Hermitage is counted, with Bomunsa on Ganghwado and Hongnyeonam at Naksansa, among the three most revered prayer sites in Korea. When we checked on 2026-10-03, VisitKorea listed admission at 1,000 won for adults, open all year, with parking at Bokgok car parks 1 and 2; its Geumsan page listed parking at 2,000 won for compact cars and 4,000–5,000 won for mid-size vehicles. This is an active place of worship: dress modestly and keep quiet around people at prayer.
Below the mountain, Sangju Silver Sand Beach curves for about 2 kilometres of white sand sloping gently into shallow water, which VisitKorea says makes it popular with families; it has campgrounds on one side and shops and accommodation behind. VisitKorea's own suggested rhythm is the sensible one: sleep at Sangju, go up to Boriam for sunrise, and spend the rest of the day on the beach.

The German Village, Mulgeon and the east coast
The German Village (Dogil Maeul) in Mulgeon-ri, Samdong-myeon, tells a piece of modern Korean history. In the 1960s and 1970s Korean miners and nurses went to work in Germany, earning foreign currency during Korea's modernisation; from 2001 Namhae County developed a hillside here for those who came back, and, according to VisitKorea, residents imported materials from Germany to build their houses. Some owners now run them as guesthouses. Come for the white walls and orange roofs against the sea, but go into the German Exhibition Hall (opened 28 June 2014) for the story of the workers themselves. When we checked on 2026-10-03, VisitKorea listed it as open 09:00–18:00 with last entry 30 minutes before closing, closed on Mondays, 1 January, Seollal and Chuseok, with admission at 1,000 won.
Down the hill, the Mulgeon Windbreak Forest is a crescent of trees about 1.5 kilometres long and 30 metres wide, planted by villagers some 300 years ago to hold back wind and waves; it has more than 100 tree species and is a Natural Monument. Walk it along the shore, then look back up at the village. Facing east, Mulgeon is also a sunrise spot.
On the same Samdong-myeon coast, the Namhae Treasure Island Observatory at 720 Dongbu-daero has a 360-degree view and a glass skywalk over the cliff that VisitKorea calls the first of its kind in Korea; when we checked, VisitKorea listed it as open 09:00–19:00. Elsewhere on the island, the smaller American Village in Idong-myeon — 22 American-style houses and pensions above Aenggang Bay for Koreans returning from the United States — sits below Yongmunsa, founded in 802, which VisitKorea calls the oldest and largest temple in Namhae. Yongmunsa runs a templestay and is known for autumn colour.

Changseon and the way out
If you leave towards Sacheon, Tongyeong or Jinju, you cross Changseon, the quieter eastern island. At Gain-ri on its shore, a fossil site preserves pterosaur and dinosaur footprints pressed into flat sheets of rock along Dongdaeman Beach. VisitKorea notes that they lie on a cape by the shore and advises timing your visit well — check the sea before you walk out. From Changseon, the Samcheonpo bridges carry the road to Sacheon.
In early October, plan around the German Village Oktoberfest. VisitKorea lists the 2026 festival from 9 to 11 October, 10:00–21:30, across the German Village area, with German-style food, beer, music and parades. Expect crowds and book a bed early, or stay at Sangju and drive over.

Practical questions
How many days do I need in Namhae?
One night if you are driving through between Yeosu, Hadong and Tongyeong; two nights if you want Boriam at sunrise and a relaxed day on the east coast.
Can I visit Namhae without a car?
Yes, but it is harder. VisitKorea lists Namhae among the direct intercity routes from Seoul Nambu Terminal, but the main sights are on different sides of the island, so expect to use taxis or local buses and to see fewer places per day.
Where should I stay in Namhae?
At Sangju Silver Sand Beach for Geumsan and Boriam, or in the German Village area of Mulgeon-ri, where some houses are run as guesthouses. Resorts such as Ananti Namhae in Nam-myeon and Sol Beach Namhae in Mijo-myeon are further options.
How much is Boriam's admission?
When we checked on 2026-10-03, VisitKorea listed 1,000 won for adults, with parking at Bokgok car parks 1 and 2.
When is the German Village Oktoberfest?
VisitKorea lists the 2026 festival from 9 to 11 October, 10:00 to 21:30, across the German Village area.
What is the nearest airport to Namhae?
Sacheon Airport (HIN), which has domestic flights from Gimpo and Jeju and rental-car desks. The nearest international airport is Gimhae in Busan.
