Mentawai Islands guide: surf season, Padang fast boats and Siberut

The Mentawai Islands lie about 150 kilometres off the west coast of Sumatra, a chain of roughly a hundred islands and islets facing the open Indian Ocean. Surfers know them for some of the most consistent surf breaks in Indonesia; everyone else comes for Siberut, the largest island, where Mentawai clans still live in uma longhouses and the rainforest shelters primates found nowhere else. There is no easy way in: almost every trip starts with a boat from Padang, and the boat timetable shapes the whole plan.

Suggested time
At least 7 nights, including Padang
Where to stay
Tuapejat (Sipora) or a surf camp or charter boat for surfing; Muara Siberut for Siberut; Padang's Batang Arau harbour area the night before the boat
Season and timing
The Ministry of Tourism names May to October as the peak surfing season, when lodging fills up; waves arrive year-round. Rain falls heavily in every month, so there is no true dry season for Siberut treks.

The short answer

Plan on at least a week, including a night in Padang at each end. Fly into Padang (Minangkabau International Airport, PDG), sleep near Muaro Padang harbour on Jalan Batang Arau, and take the morning Mentawai Fast boat: to Tuapejat on Sipora for island camps and homestays, or to Siberut (Maileppet, near Muara Siberut) for a cultural trek. Surfers usually choose between a charter boat that moves between breaks and a land-based surf camp; culture trips to Siberut's interior villages work best with a guide arranged in advance, as the Ministry of Tourism advises. Boats do not run every day to every island, so build the trip around the sailing days.

Surf trip or Siberut trip: decide first

The Mentawai Islands Regency has four main islands: Siberut in the north, Sipora in the middle, and North and South Pagai in the south. The regency seat, Tuapejat, is on Sipora and is the largest town, with only a few thousand people. Across the whole chain there are few roads; boats are how people and supplies move.

For surfing, the question is whether you sleep on a boat or on land. Wikipedia counts more than 40 boats offering surf charters, which move between breaks with the swell; the alternative is a surf camp or resort on one of the islands, which the ministry notes can offer direct access to surf spots. Homestays around Tuapejat are the budget option and the easiest to reach by public boat.

For culture and rainforest, go to Siberut. The island's main settlement, Muara Siberut, is in the south next to the Maileppet wharf, and the interior villages that visitors come for, such as Madobag and Matotonan, are reached only by unpaved roads. Most of the western half of the island is Siberut National Park.

Combining both is possible but costs days: the fast boats link Padang with each island group on different days, so moving between Sipora and Siberut usually means planning around the timetable rather than hopping across on a whim.

Padang, the harbour and the boat timetable

Fly into Minangkabau International Airport (PDG) at Ketaping, about 20–23 kilometres north-west of Padang's centre, and sleep in Padang. The fast boats leave early in the morning, so a same-day flight-to-boat connection is not realistic.

Mentawai Fast sails from Pelabuhan Muaro Padang on Jalan Batang Arau, beside the Batang Arau river in the old harbour quarter. When we checked on 2026-10-03, the operator's published timetable (effective from 11 April 2026, Western Indonesia Time) listed:

  • Padang to Tuapejat: Wednesday and Friday 07:00, arriving 10:30; Sunday 10:00, arriving 13:30. Tuapejat to Padang: Wednesday, Friday and Sunday 15:00, arriving 18:30.
  • Padang to Siberut: Thursday 07:00, arriving 11:00 direct; Tuesday and Saturday 07:00 via Sikabaluan (arriving Sikabaluan 11:00, Siberut 13:45). Siberut to Padang: Tuesday and Saturday 14:30, arriving 18:30; on Thursday the boat returns via Sikabaluan.
  • Padang to Sikakap (Pagai): Friday 06:00, arriving 11:00; Sikakap to Padang Friday 13:30, arriving 17:30.
  • No sailings on Monday. The operator states that schedules can change without notice; it takes bookings through its website and by WhatsApp.

Balls of dough made from taro and banana, rolled in grated coconut, according to the description by the Mentawai photographer of the dish; it is often prepared for traditional ceremonies.

Where to look
Ask homestay hosts in Tuapejat or your guide on Siberut; it is home and ceremonial food rather than a menu item.
Fit it into your day
A snack or side dish when it is offered.

Not sold everywhere; the Ministry of Tourism's guide describes subbet differently (as grilled fish), so ask what is being served.

Surfing the Mentawais: season, waves and how to book

The islands face the Indian Ocean and receive swell all year. The Ministry of Tourism describes waves of about 2 to 7 metres and names around ten prime spots, including Macaronis, Lance's Right and Hollow Trees; its planning guide calls May to October the peak surfing season and warns that lodging availability is limited then. Macaronis was first surfed in 1980, and photos from a 1992 charter trip put the Mentawais on the map for surf travellers, according to Wikipedia.

Charter boats and surf camps sell trips as packages and usually arrange the transfer from Padang themselves; some resorts also arrange flights and airport pick-ups, the ministry notes. Before you book, ask which island and breaks the camp or boat covers, how they get you from Padang, how many surfers share a break, and what medical and evacuation support they have, because distances by sea are long.

These are powerful waves over a remote coast. If you are not yet comfortable in overhead surf, ask the operator honestly which spots suit your level before you pay.

Siberut: Mentawai culture and the rainforest

Siberut was cut off from mainland Sumatra for at least 500,000 years, and UNESCO, which made the island a biosphere reserve in 1981, says about 65 per cent of its animals are thought to be endemic. Siberut National Park, declared in 1993, protects lowland dipterocarp rainforest and endangered primates such as Kloss's gibbon, the Siberut macaque and the Siberut langur.

The Mentawai people traditionally live in the uma, a communal longhouse on stilts with bamboo walls and a thatched roof, shared by several families. Body tattoos, called titi, mark a person's role and relationship with the forest, and the sikerei are shamans and healers in the Arat Sabulungan belief system, which honours ancestral spirits and the natural world. Many Mentawai today are Christian or Muslim; Wikipedia notes that sikerei still practise mainly among a few clans in the south of Siberut.

The Ministry of Tourism's Mentawai page says the easiest way to visit is to join a trekking tour from Padang or Bukittinggi, that independent travellers need reasonable Indonesian to negotiate with local guides, and that they must organise their own travel permit with the police. Ask your guide or the police in Padang whether a permit is still required before you go.

From Maileppet, a concrete road runs to Muara Siberut and Muntei; beyond that, villages such as Madobag and Matotonan are reached on unpaved roads. Expect very basic conditions once you leave the coast. Agree beforehand with your guide what you will contribute to the host family, ask before photographing anyone, and follow the family's lead in ceremonies.

Tuapejat and Festival Pesona Mentawai

Tuapejat, on the north of Sipora, is the islands' administrative town, with the main harbour for boats from Padang, a beach at Pantai Jati, and homestays that are the easiest Mentawai base to reach without a package. Rokot airport on Sipora has flights from Padang; when we checked, Wikipedia listed only Susi Air on that route.

The Festival Pesona Mentawai is the regency's annual cultural festival. When we checked on 2026-10-03, the Ministry of Tourism's event listing gave 8 to 10 October 2026 in Tuapejat, free of charge, with the theme of the E'eruk Pulaggajat village-cleansing ritual. The 2025 edition was held in July at the Mapaddegat tourism village, so dates move from year to year: check the listing before planning around it.

Safety, connectivity and what to bring

The Mentawais sit above the Sunda megathrust, one of the world's most active earthquake zones. In October 2010 an earthquake and tsunami killed more than 400 people on the islands. Wherever you sleep, find out where the high ground is; after strong shaking, move inland and uphill without waiting for an alarm.

The ministry warns that many areas have limited mobile signal and Wi-Fi, and that supplies are limited and costly, so it advises bringing sunscreen, insect repellent and a first-aid kit. Add any medicines you need for the whole stay, cash in rupiah, and a dry bag for boat transfers. Travel insurance that covers medical evacuation from a remote island is worth checking before you surf.

Practical questions

How do I get to the Mentawai Islands?

Fly to Padang (PDG) and take a boat from Muaro Padang harbour. When we checked on 2026-10-03, Mentawai Fast listed sailings to Tuapejat on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday and to Siberut on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, with no boat on Monday. The ministry says a slower ferry also runs a few times a week and takes about 10–12 hours. Surf camps and charters usually arrange the transfer.

When is the best time to surf the Mentawais?

The Ministry of Tourism names May to October as the peak surfing season. Waves come year-round, so experienced surfers also travel outside those months, and boats and camps are easier to book then.

Do I need a guide to visit Siberut?

For the interior villages, yes in practice. The ministry recommends joining a trekking tour from Padang or Bukittinggi and says independent travellers need Indonesian and a police travel permit. Check the permit requirement locally before you travel.

How many days do I need?

At least a week including a night in Padang at each end. The boat timetable runs on fixed days, so a Siberut trek or a surf stay is easiest to plan around those days.

Is there mobile signal in the Mentawais?

Only in some places. The ministry warns that connectivity is limited in many areas, so download maps and confirm bookings before you leave Padang.

When is Festival Pesona Mentawai?

When we checked on 2026-10-03, the Ministry of Tourism listed 8 to 10 October 2026 in Tuapejat, free of charge. The date changes each year.
