Kelimutu and Moni: crater-lake sunrise, where to stay and the Ende route
Kelimutu is a volcano in central Flores whose summit holds three crater lakes, each changing colour on its own schedule. The Lio people who live around it regard the lakes as resting places for the souls of the dead. Almost everyone visits at dawn, which makes the small roadside village of Moni at the foot of the mountain the place to sleep. Ende, the regency capital on the south coast, is the nearest airport and transport hub. Two things shape a visit in late 2026. The lakes were last reported, in mid-2026, as three shades of green rather than their famous contrasting colours. And the park has new safety limits after the August 2026 earthquake.

- Suggested time
- 1–2 nights
- Where to stay
- Moni village on the main road below the park; Ende for flights and onward buses
- Season and timing
- Ende's average rainfall is highest from December to March and lowest from June to September. Heavy rain has caused crater-wall landslides and short park closures, so the drier months are the safer bet. Mornings at the summit are cool all year.
The short answer
Spend at least one night in Moni, two if you can. Then a cloudy dawn does not cost you the lakes, and you have a free afternoon for the villages, the hot springs and the walk down. Reach Moni by road from Ende, the nearest airport (when we checked on 2026-10-03, Wings Air was listed flying there from Labuan Bajo and Kupang), or from Maumere further east. Go up to the car park before first light by ojek or with your lodging's driver, walk the last stretch to the viewpoint, and walk back down through the fields afterwards. On an overland Flores trip, Moni fits between Bajawa (via Ende) and Maumere.
Sleep in Moni, not in Ende
Indonesia's Ministry of Tourism calls Moni the gate to Kelimutu. It is the small town at the foot of the mountain, and you can start a sunrise visit from there without a long drive in the dark. Wikivoyage describes the village as rather charmless but by far the most convenient place to stay. Its guesthouses are strung out for about 2 km along the main road, so check how far your room is from the turn-off to the park.
The ministry also lists the Kelimutu Crater Lakes Ecolodge in Koanara village, the settlement closest to the mountain. It sits among rice fields with a river below. Most other lodging in Moni is simple guesthouses and homestays. Wikivoyage warns that their blankets are often too thin for the cold nights, so pack a warm layer for bed and for the summit.
Ende is the alternative if you have to fly in late or out early. It is a real town with Soekarno's exile house and a seafront, but a sunrise from Ende means a very early start: Wikipedia puts the drive to Moni at about three hours. Treat Ende as the night before or after Moni, not as your base for the lakes.
The three lakes, and what they look like now
The summit has three crater lakes. Tiwu Ata Polo (the Bewitched or Enchanted Lake) and Tiwu Ko'o Fai Nuwa Muri (the Lake of Young Men and Maidens) sit side by side, separated by a shared crater wall. Tiwu Ata Mbupu (the Lake of Old People) lies a little to the west. In the Lio belief that Wikipedia records, the souls of young people go to Tiwu Ko'o Fai Nuwa Muri, those of the old to Tiwu Ata Mbupu and those of the wicked to Tiwu Ata Polo. Treat the summit as a sacred place as well as a viewpoint.
The colours come from volcanic gases and minerals in the water, and they change without warning. The ministry notes that the lakes have been blue, green and black at times, and white, red and blue at others. Do not travel expecting the postcard image. In July 2026, Indonesia's Geological Agency reported Lake I as turquoise green, Lake II as light green and Lake III as dark green: three shades of green rather than three contrasting colours. Check recent photos before you go if the colours are your main reason for the trip.
The ministry describes the visit as a road to a car park followed by about 30 minutes on foot to the top. From the summit viewpoint you look down into the twin lakes and across to Tiwu Ata Mbupu. Wikivoyage points out that you cannot fit all three lakes into one photograph from the ground.

Make time for the local food
What to eat and where to look

Ubi nuabosi (Flores sweet potato)
A sweet potato that the Ministry of Tourism describes as very popular on Flores. It is boiled, fried or roasted and eaten in place of rice, often with dried salted fish.
- Where to look
- Home-style warungs and guesthouse kitchens; ask whether it is available.
- Fit it into your day
- A filling side to dinner at your guesthouse the night before an early start.
Usually served with salted fish; ask if you want it plain.
Catemak jagung
A savoury stew of corn with beans, peanuts and pumpkin, eaten across East Nusa Tenggara as a side dish or a light main.
- Where to look
- Local warungs and family-run kitchens rather than tourist menus; it is everyday food, so ask what is cooking.
- Fit it into your day
- A warm lunch after walking down from the lakes.
Contains peanuts.
Se'i (smoked meat)
Beef or pork, sometimes fish, smoked slowly above an open fire so the smoke cooks it rather than the flame. It is sliced and eaten as it is or cooked again with vegetables.
- Where to look
- Restaurants serving East Nusa Tenggara food; the plate in our photo, from Kupang, comes with sautéed greens and rice.
- Fit it into your day
- A dinner on a town night in Ende or Maumere, if you find it on a menu.
Most often pork; ask for beef if you do not eat pork.
Kopi Ende and moke
Wikivoyage describes Kopi Ende as coffee beans toasted together with ginger. Moke is Flores's distilled palm drink, which the ministry calls a symbol of friendship; the 'black' version is distilled again and stronger.
- Where to look
- Coffee in Ende and at guesthouses; moke is usually offered by hosts or at local gatherings rather than on menus.
- Fit it into your day
- Coffee for the cold summit morning; moke only once your day's driving is done.
Moke is alcoholic and strength varies; do not drink before riding a scooter or the mountain road.
Moni potato cakes
Wikivoyage recommends Moni's mashed-potato cakes with herbs, deep-fried until crisp, as a local speciality of the village restaurants.
- Where to look
- Restaurants along Moni's main road; Wikivoyage names Chenty Restaurant beside Bintang.
- Fit it into your day
- An easy snack or light dinner in Moni.
Deep-fried; made to order, so expect a wait.
After the August 2026 earthquake: what changed
On 15 August 2026 a strong earthquake struck off Nagekeo regency in central Flores. Initial reports gave magnitude 7.7; the Geological Agency later cited 7.0. Indonesia's disaster agency, BNPB, said on 18 August that Kelimutu National Park was among the sites temporarily closed for safety checks. ANTARA reported on 31 August that the travel association ASITA NTT said the lakes had reopened on 25 August.
A Geological Agency survey after the quake found a crack about 100 metres long, about six metres back from the rim of Tiwu Ata Polo (Lake I), and a slide of old deposits into Tiwu Ko'o Fai Nuwa Muri (Lake II). The agency warned that aftershocks or heavy rain could trigger further collapses into Lake I. It asked visitors to keep away from the crack zone, 6 to 10 metres from the rim, and asked the park to put up barriers and warning signs at Lakes I and II. Stay on the paths and behind the railings, and follow the rangers' instructions.
When we checked on 2026-10-03, MAGMA Indonesia, the government volcano-monitoring service, listed Kelimutu at Level I (Normal). The level has changed before: it was raised to Level II from late May 2024, and the park then limited visiting hours and kept people away from the lakes. Check MAGMA and ask your lodging in Moni about the current rules before you go up. The national park's own website could not be reached from our editorial environment, so we cannot confirm current opening hours or ticket prices.
Other places nearby were slower to recover. On 14 September 2026, detikBali reported that 22 tourism villages across Flores were still closed, among them Pemo Kelimutu in Ende regency. If a village visit is part of your plan, confirm locally that it is open.

Getting there: Ende, Maumere and the road to Moni
When we checked on 2026-10-03, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation listed Wings Air flights from Ende (ENE) to Labuan Bajo (Komodo Airport) and to Kupang (El Tari), each seven times a week. It listed Maumere's Frans Seda Airport (MOF) with Wings Air and NAM Air services to Kupang and a Wings Air flight to Labuan Bajo three times a week. Neither airport listed a direct flight to Bali, so from Bali you will normally connect in Labuan Bajo or Kupang. Ende's airport was damaged in the August 2026 earthquake and all flights were cancelled that day. Confirm your flight with the airline shortly before you travel.
Moni is on the main road between Ende and Maumere. The ministry puts Koanara, the village nearest the mountain, about 66 km from Ende and 83 km from Maumere. Buses between the two towns pass through Moni. In Ende, eastbound buses for Moni, Maumere and Larantuka leave from the Wolowona terminal; westbound ones for Bajawa, Ruteng and Labuan Bajo leave from Ndao. Wikivoyage suggests about two to two and a half hours from Ende by shared car or bus, and three to four from Maumere. A private car with a driver, arranged through your lodging, is easier with luggage and lets you stop on the way.
The ministry says ojeks (motorbike taxis), cars and public transport go up to the car park below the summit, and that there is a walking path from Moni that is shorter than the road. Many visitors ride up in the dark and walk down after sunrise; Wikivoyage recommends walking back as a pleasant way to see the villages.

A workable one- or two-night plan
This is an editorial suggestion, not a timetable. Road times on Flores depend on the vehicle, the weather and roadworks.
- Arrival day: fly into Ende or drive in from Bajawa, then continue to Moni in the afternoon. In Ende, an hour at Soekarno's exile house and the contemplation park by the shore fits easily before you leave.
- Sunrise morning: go up to the car park before first light, walk to the summit viewpoint and stay until the light is full on the water. Walk down through the fields, then rest at your guesthouse.
- Afternoon (two-night stay): the hot springs near the park entrance, the waterfall path in Moni, or a village where Lio ikat is woven. Check that the village has reopened since the earthquake.
- Second morning (two-night stay): a second chance at the lakes if the first dawn was cloudy, then on to Maumere or back to Ende.

Fitting Kelimutu into an overland Flores route
Most overland trips across Flores run between Labuan Bajo in the west and Maumere in the east, and Kelimutu is the natural stop in the middle third. From Bajawa the road goes down to Ende; Wikivoyage lists Bajawa–Moni buses at three to four hours. Breaking the trip in Ende is reasonable if you arrive late. Moni to Maumere is the last leg, and Maumere has more flight options than Ende.
Ende regency has more to see if you have an extra day. Indonesia's Ministry of Tourism highlights Soekarno's exile house in Ende, where the future president lived from 1934 to 1938. It also points to Wologai, a traditional village in Ende's Detusoko district, and Wolojita, also in Ende. Near Maumere, the ministry recommends the weaving village of Sikka, about 30 km from town, and the Bikon Blewut Museum at the Ledalero seminary. These suit a slower east-bound route better than a rushed one.

Practical questions
How many nights should I spend in Moni for Kelimutu?
One night is the minimum for a sunrise visit; two give you a second chance if the first morning is cloudy, and time for the villages and hot springs around Moni.
Is Kelimutu open after the 2026 earthquake?
The park was closed for safety checks after the 15 August 2026 earthquake. ANTARA reported that the lakes reopened on 25 August, according to the travel association ASITA NTT. The Geological Agency has asked visitors to keep away from a crack near the rim of Tiwu Ata Polo. Check MAGMA Indonesia and ask in Moni about the current rules before going up.
What colour are the Kelimutu lakes now?
The colours change unpredictably. In July 2026 the Geological Agency reported them as turquoise green, light green and dark green. Check recent photos before you go rather than relying on older images.
What is the nearest airport to Kelimutu?
Ende (ENE), served by Wings Air from Labuan Bajo and Kupang when we checked on 2026-10-03. Maumere (MOF) is further from Moni but has more flights. Neither had a direct Bali flight listed.
Can I walk up to the lakes from Moni?
Yes. The Ministry of Tourism says a walking path from Moni is shorter than the road. Most visitors ride to the car park for sunrise and walk down afterwards, which avoids a long climb in the dark.
What should I bring for the sunrise?
A warm layer, a torch or headlamp, water and shoes with grip for the steps. The summit is over 1,600 metres high and the early mornings are cold.
