Flores and Komodo in 6 days: Labuan Bajo boat, Bajawa and Kelimutu
Most visitors fly into Labuan Bajo, spend a day or two on the water in Komodo National Park and fly back to Bali without seeing the rest of Flores. This route keeps the boat day but then turns east along the main road across the island, to the cool Ngada highlands around Bajawa and the crater lakes of Kelimutu above Moni, and flies out from the far end so you never retrace a kilometre. It is a one-way trip with three bases and two long road days, which is the honest price of seeing Flores rather than only its western tip.

- Suggested time
- 6 days (5 nights), plus a night in Ende or Maumere if your flight leaves early
- Where to stay
- Labuan Bajo for nights 1–2; Bajawa for nights 3–4; Moni for night 5
- Season and timing
- Labuan Bajo is driest from April to November and wettest from December to March. Padar's hills are green in the rainy season and dry, golden savanna in the dry season. The Ministry of Tourism advises against Rinca in June and July, the dragons' mating period, when they are harder to find.
The short answer
Spend two nights in Labuan Bajo and give the middle day to a boat trip in Komodo National Park: Padar early, then a ranger-led walk on Komodo or Rinca. On day 3 drive east to Bajawa, or take the Wings Air flight to Soa Airport if you want to skip the longest road day. Use day 4 for Bena and the Ngada villages, drive on through Ende to Moni on day 5, and go up Kelimutu for sunrise on day 6 before flying out of Ende (ENE) or Maumere (MOF). Hire a car with a driver for the overland part; public transport does not reach the villages. Since the earthquake of 15 August 2026, check closures before you book.
One road, three bases, no backtracking
Flores is long and thin, and the sights on this route sit in a line from west to east: Labuan Bajo and the national park at the western tip, Ruteng and the Manggarai highlands, Bajawa in Ngada, Ende on the south coast, and Moni below Kelimutu. Planning it one way, flying into Labuan Bajo and out of Ende or Maumere, means every road day takes you somewhere new. A return trip to Labuan Bajo would cost you a day of driving for nothing.
Sleep in Labuan Bajo for two nights, so the boat day starts from your hotel rather than from a flight. Then sleep two nights in Bajawa: one to recover from the drive, and one after the village day. Spend the last night in Moni, the closest place to Kelimutu, because the lakes are a sunrise visit and you will be leaving in the dark.
The overland part is easiest with a car and driver, hired for the four days from Labuan Bajo to the airport at the other end. The Ministry of Tourism lists ojek, travel-agency cars, buses and bemos in Labuan Bajo and advises arranging cars and guides through official sources or your hotel. Around Bajawa, Wikivoyage notes that you need your own car or motorbike to reach the villages. Agree on the route, the overnight stops and the final airport before you set off.
Days 1–2: Labuan Bajo and a day in Komodo National Park
Fly into Komodo International Airport (LBJ), for which the ministry lists direct flights from Denpasar, Kupang, Ende and Mataram, and keep day 1 light. The Ministry of Tourism's Labuan Bajo guide points to Bukit Cinta, Puncak Amelia and Puncak Silvia, viewpoints near the airport, for sunset, and to Kampung Ujung, the town's local food centre, for dinner. Use the evening to confirm the next morning's pick-up time with your boat operator.
Day 2 is the reason most people come. Plan it around three stops, starting with Padar: the ministry describes a climb of about 30 minutes on a steep slope to the viewpoint, and advises against going at noon if you do not want full sun on the way up. Komodo or Rinca comes next for the dragons, always with a ranger. Rinca is about two hours from the Labuan Bajo ferry terminal to Loh Buaya pier, where tickets are bought and treks of one to three hours start. End with Pink Beach or a snorkelling stop if your operator's route includes one.
Since 1 April 2026 the park has limited visits to 1,000 people a day, according to the Komodo National Park office quoted by Antara, and the Ministry of Forestry said visits would be distributed through the SiOra application in three sessions. Book your boat through an operator who can confirm a quota slot for your date, and do it before you buy the rest of the trip. If you would rather spend longer on the water, the ministry describes phinisi liveaboards of several days, but each extra day at sea is a day added to this route.
Labuan Bajo carried on after the earthquake of 15 August 2026. When we checked on 2026-10-03, the latest report we found (Antara, 23 August) quoted the Ministry of Tourism as saying the park was open, boats were sailing as usual and Komodo Airport was running to schedule. The harbour authority warned of high waves in the southern Sape Strait.

Make time for the local food
What to eat and where to look

Grilled fish at Kampung Ujung
The Ministry of Tourism points visitors to Kampung Ujung, Labuan Bajo's local food centre, and Wikivoyage notes the food stalls that line the harbourfront in the evening. Grilled fish is the obvious order in a fishing town.
- Where to look
- Kampung Ujung in Labuan Bajo, in the evening.
- Fit it into your day
- Dinner on day 1, after the sunset viewpoint and before the early boat.
Ask the price before you order, as fish is often priced by size.
Se'i (smoked meat)
Beef or pork, and sometimes fish, smoked slowly high above an open fire so that the smoke rather than the flame cooks it. It is sliced and eaten straight away or cooked again with vegetables.
- Where to look
- Local eateries in the towns along the route; ask your driver where it is served.
- Fit it into your day
- A filling lunch stop on one of the long road days.
Usually pork; ask for se'i sapi if you want beef.
Tapa kolo (rice cooked in bamboo)
Red rice packed into a short length of bamboo and cooked over an open fire, served with chicken, pork or other meat. The ministry notes that it is usually made for rituals and ceremonies.
- Where to look
- Ask your Bajawa homestay; it is not something you can count on finding on a menu.
- Fit it into your day
- A dinner in Bajawa, ordered a day ahead if your lodging can make it.
It takes time to prepare; do not expect it at short notice.
Catemak jagung and ubi nuabosi
Catemak jagung is a savoury corn stew with peanuts, green beans and pumpkin; ubi nuabosi is a local sweet potato, boiled, fried or roasted and eaten with salted fish in place of rice.
- Where to look
- Home-style warung and homestay kitchens in the highlands and around Ende.
- Fit it into your day
- A simple lunch on the drive from Bajawa to Moni.
Ask whether a dish includes fish or meat stock if you are vegetarian.
Moke and Kopi Ende
Moke is Flores' distilled palm spirit, which the ministry describes as a symbol of friendship; the stronger black moke is distilled twice. Ende's coffee, by Wikivoyage's description, is roasted with ginger.
- Where to look
- Moke is offered in villages and homestays; coffee is served everywhere from Bajawa east.
- Fit it into your day
- Coffee before the drive; a small glass of moke only on an evening with no early start.
Moke is strong and home-distilled; drink little, never before Kelimutu or a drive.
Day 3: the long road east, or the short flight
This is the hardest day of the trip. Indonesia Kaya puts Labuan Bajo to Bajawa at seven to eight hours by road. The road climbs through the Manggarai highlands around Ruteng, a cool town 1,100 m up according to Wikivoyage, and a natural place to stop for lunch. Start early, and treat the day as travel rather than sightseeing.
If that is too much, fly instead. When we checked on 2026-10-03, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation listed Wings Air flights between Komodo Airport and Soa Airport (BJW) outside Bajawa seven times a week. Flying saves the day but means hiring a car in Bajawa instead of keeping one driver for the whole route. Ask your Bajawa lodging about a pick-up.
Bajawa sits at about 1,200 m, and Wikivoyage warns that the nights are chilly: pack a sweater. Several tourism villages in Manggarai, including Ruteng P'u and Liang Bua, were still closed after the earthquake when Detik reported on 14 September 2026, so do not plan a stop at them without checking first.
Day 4: Bena and the Ngada villages
Bena, about 19 km south of Bajawa, is the village to see if you see only one. Indonesia Kaya describes around 45 houses of nine clans set on nine levels in a U shape at the foot of Mount Inerie, with ngadhu and bhaga, shrines to the male and female ancestors, in the central yard. Houses sell ikat and other woven cloth. The Ministry of Tourism lists Bena among Flores' megalithic villages. Indonesia Kaya notes that there is no entrance ticket; visitors are asked to sign the guest book and leave a voluntary donation for the village's upkeep.
This is a lived-in village, not a museum. Wikivoyage's advice is simply to ask before you photograph anyone, and to bring cash, since there is no ATM nearby. Start early: Manulalu, on the ridge above Bena in the same village area, is described by Indonesia Kaya as the best spot for Inerie's summit and at its best in the morning, and the hot springs near Bajawa are a good end to the day; Wikivoyage describes Malanage, where a hot stream mixes with cold mountain water.
When we checked on 2026-10-03, MAGMA Indonesia listed Inerie and Inielika at Level I (Normal). Climbing Inerie needs an extra day, so leave it out of a six-day trip.

Days 5–6: Ende, Moni and Kelimutu at sunrise
On day 5 the road leaves the highlands for the south coast at Ende, and the town is worth a stop on the way. The Ministry of Tourism describes the house where Sukarno lived in exile from 1934 to 1938, now a museum, and the statue under a breadfruit tree on the waterfront where he is said to have conceived Pancasila. Ende's Wolowona terminal has buses east to Moni and Maumere. Continue to Moni for the night; Koanara, the village closest to the mountain, is 66 km from Ende by the ministry's figures. Wikivoyage warns that guesthouse blankets are thin.
Go up before dawn on day 6. The ministry gives 11 km by road from Moni to the car park, then a 30-minute walk to the lakes. There is also a footpath from Moni that is shorter than the road, and Wikivoyage suggests walking back down rather than riding. The three lakes change colour unpredictably, and the ministry notes that some areas are restricted because they are dangerous.
Kelimutu was closed after the earthquake and reopened on 25 August 2026, according to the tour operators' association ASITA NTT quoted by Antara. The Geology Agency found a 100 m crack about 6 m from the rim of Lake I (Tiwu Ata Polo) and asks visitors to keep 6 to 10 m back from it. When we checked on 2026-10-03, MAGMA listed Kelimutu at Level I (Normal). Stay on the marked paths and follow the rangers.
Fly out the same afternoon only if your flight time leaves you several hours after coming down from the mountain; otherwise sleep in Ende or Maumere and fly on day 7. Ende's airport is in town, 66 km from Koanara. Maumere is 83 km from Koanara by the ministry's figures, further but with more flights.
The route day by day
This is an editorial outline, not a timetable. Road times on Flores depend on the driver, the weather and roadworks, and no official journey times are published. Confirm park quota, flights and village openings before you book.
- Day 1 — Labuan Bajo: arrive at Komodo Airport (LBJ); a sunset viewpoint and dinner at Kampung Ujung.
- Day 2 — Komodo National Park: a full day by boat: Padar early, a ranger-led walk on Komodo or Rinca, then Pink Beach and snorkelling.
- Day 3 — To Bajawa: the long drive east through the Manggarai highlands and Ruteng, or a Wings Air flight to Soa (BJW).
- Day 4 — Ngada villages: Bena in the morning, the Manulalu viewpoint, a hot spring in the afternoon.
- Day 5 — To Moni: down to the coast at Ende for Sukarno's exile house, then up to Moni.
- Day 6 — Kelimutu and out: sunrise at the lakes, walk down, then drive to Ende (ENE) or Maumere (MOF) for the flight, or one more night there.

Before you book: flights out and the earthquake
Check the flight out before anything else, because it decides the final day. When we checked on 2026-10-03, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation listed Wings Air from Ende to Labuan Bajo and to Kupang (El Tari), each seven times a week, and from Maumere to Kupang on Wings Air and Nam Air (18 flights a week between them) and to Labuan Bajo three times a week. Flights from Ende or Maumere connect back to Bali through Labuan Bajo or Kupang. Leave a margin before any international connection.
The magnitude 7.7 earthquake of 15 August 2026, centred off Nagekeo in central Flores, damaged parts of Ende airport's terminal and tower; all flights there were cancelled that day. The provincial emergency period was extended to 12 September. When Detik reported on 14 September 2026, 22 tourism villages across Flores were still closed, including Pemo Kelimutu in Ende and several villages in Nagekeo and Manggarai, while 36 had reopened. Ask your driver and lodgings what is open, and follow BMKG for aftershock and marine warnings.
Practical questions
Is six days enough for Flores and Komodo?
It is enough for one boat day in Komodo National Park, the Ngada villages around Bajawa and Kelimutu, provided you travel one way and fly out from Ende or Maumere. It is not enough for a liveaboard as well, or for Wae Rebo, Riung or the Inerie climb; each of those needs extra days.
Can I drive from Labuan Bajo to Bajawa in one day?
Yes, but it fills the day: Indonesia Kaya puts it at seven to eight hours by road. Start early and stop in Ruteng for lunch. If you would rather not, Wings Air flies between Komodo Airport and Soa Airport near Bajawa; the Directorate General of Civil Aviation listed it seven times a week when we checked.
Do I need to book the Komodo boat in advance?
Yes. Since 1 April 2026 the park has admitted 1,000 visitors a day, booked through the SiOra system, so ask your operator to confirm a slot for your date before you pay for flights. Leave a spare day if you can, in case the sea is rough.
Which airport should I fly out from, Ende or Maumere?
Ende is closer to Moni; Koanara is 66 km from Ende and 83 km from Maumere by the Ministry of Tourism's figures. When we checked, Ende had daily Wings Air flights to Labuan Bajo and Kupang, and Maumere had more flights to Kupang and three a week to Labuan Bajo. Choose by which connection reaches Bali or your next stop in time.
Is Kelimutu open after the 2026 earthquake?
It reopened on 25 August 2026. The Geology Agency asks visitors to keep 6 to 10 m away from a new crack on the rim of Lake I, and MAGMA listed the volcano at Level I (Normal) when we checked on 2026-10-03. Check again before you go.
Is it safe to visit Flores after the earthquake?
Labuan Bajo, the national park and Komodo Airport were reported to be operating normally within days. Some tourism villages were still closed in mid-September 2026. Follow official warnings from BMKG and local authorities, and check each place on your route before you go.
