Danyang travel guide: Dodamsambong, Mancheonha, paragliding and caves
Danyang is a small county town in North Chungcheong, built on a loop of the upper Namhangang River between Sobaeksan National Park and Chungjuho Lake. Its draw is the landscape: three limestone pillars standing in the river at Dodamsambong, cliffs and gorges known as the Eight Scenic Views of Danyang, much visited by Joseon-dynasty scholars, and limestone caves under the hills. In 2025 UNESCO designated the county a Global Geopark, citing a sequence of rock layers that lacks only the Devonian, along with its caves and karst. The town has turned those cliffs into activities, from the glass-floored Mancheonha Skywalk to what UNESCO calls Korea's largest paragliding facility, and its limestone soil grows the hard, pungent garlic that turns up in almost every local dish.

- Suggested time
- 1–2 nights
- Where to stay
- Danyang-eup (the town centre) for food, the market and the bus terminal; the Sambong-ro riverside for resort-style hotels
- Season and timing
- Spring (the Sobaeksan Royal Azalea Festival in May) and autumn (the Ondal Culture Festival in October, and foliage on Bobaljae Pass) are the high seasons. VisitKorea's 2026 forecast expected peak colour across Korea from mid-October to early November. Paragliding, the skywalk and boats all depend on the weather, and the skywalk closes an hour earlier in winter.
The short answer
Stay one night, two if you want Sainam Rock, the Chungjuho Lake cruise or a hike in Sobaeksan National Park as well. Sleep in Danyang-eup, the town centre on the river, where the market, the bus terminal and Gosu Cave are within walking distance. Arrive by train on the Jungang Line, which also runs on to Yeongju and Andong, or by bus from Dong Seoul Terminal. Give the first afternoon to Mancheonha Skywalk and a garlic dinner around Gugyeong Market, and the next morning to Dodamsambong and a tandem paragliding flight, which needs good weather and is best booked for the morning with the afternoon as a fallback. Book a taxi or a tour for the outlying sights; they are spread along the river and up the valleys.
Where to stay: the town centre or the river road
Danyang's sights are spread along the river and up its side valleys, but nearly everything you need in the evening is in Danyang-eup, the compact town centre on a bend of the Namhangang. VisitKorea's page on the Danyang Special Tourist Zone names Dojeon-ri, Byeolgok-ri, Sangjin-ri and Gosu-ri, all in Danyang-eup, as the areas with most of the accommodation. Gugyeong Market is three minutes on foot from the intercity bus terminal, and Gosu Cave is about a kilometre from it, so a room here lets you do a whole evening without transport.
Sambong-ro, the road out along the river to Dodamsambong, has the larger hotels. VisitKorea lists the 80-room Danyang Hotel at 31 Sambong-ro, with river views from its rooms, and Sono Belle Danyang at 187-17 Sambong-ro, an 855-room resort with a water park and family suites with kitchens. They suit travellers with a car or families; without one, you will be taking taxis into town for dinner.
Arriving by train, note that Danyang Station is on the south bank of the river, away from the centre: you cross the Sangjin Bridge to reach the town. If you want a quieter night, VisitKorea also lists Danchon Seowon Gotaek, a seven-room hanok guesthouse in the countryside, about 20 minutes by car from the market. It serves no breakfast, so plan your meals around it.
Dodamsambong and Seongmun
Dodamsambong, which the county's tourism site calls the most loved of the Eight Scenic Views, is three limestone peaks rising out of the Namhangang, the tallest of them, Janggunbong, topped by the small Samdojeong Pavilion. Local legend makes them a husband between his wife and his concubine, with the wife turned away from him in protest. UNESCO's geopark description calls them three cone-shaped limestone pillars shaped by water and weathering. VisitKorea lists the riverside tourist area as free and open from 09:00 to 18:00. When we checked on 2026-10-03, VisitKorea listed parking at 3,000 won for cars. The site also has the Sambong Story Hall, a cruise-boat quay and a music fountain that plays in the evening.
To get closer, motorboats run out round the peaks. The ride takes about ten minutes. When we checked on 2026-10-03, VisitKorea listed departures between 10:00 and 17:30, leaving once enough passengers have gathered, and fares of 15,000 won for adults and 10,000 won for children.
Seongmun, a rainbow-shaped natural stone arch about 200 metres upstream on the left bank, is the second of the Eight Scenic Views. VisitKorea lists it as free and open 09:00–18:00, the same hours as the Dodamsambong tourist area, so the two make one stop.

Make time for the local food
What to eat and where to look

Maneul tteokgalbi and the garlic set meal (maneulbap jeongsik)
Danyang's sit-down garlic meal: rice cooked with a handful of garlic cloves, which VisitKorea says gives it a sweet garlic flavour, eaten with a soy dressing of wild greens or wrapped in laver, alongside grilled garlic short-rib patties (tteokgalbi) and side dishes. Danyang garlic, called 'six-sided garlic', is small and hard and keeps well; VisitKorea credits the limestone soil and big swings in daily temperature.
- Where to look
- Restaurants in Danyang-eup. VisitKorea's food listings include Doljip Sikdang near the bus terminal, a two-generation restaurant serving hot-stone-pot rice with garlic set menus, listed as open 10:00–21:00 when we checked.
- Fit it into your day
- Dinner on your first evening in town.
Some garlic dishes are raw, such as maneul yukhoe (raw beef with garlic) on Doljip Sikdang's menu; ask if you avoid raw meat.
Maneul dakgangjeong (garlic fried chicken)
Bite-sized fried chicken tossed with whole fried garlic in a sweet red glaze and topped with nuts; VisitKorea calls it one of the signature foods of Gugyeong Market. A black-garlic version with crunchy rice (nurungji) is also sold in the market.
- Where to look
- Takeaway shops in Gugyeong Traditional Market, Dojeon 5-gil, a few minutes' walk from the intercity bus terminal.
- Fit it into your day
- A boxed snack from the market to eat in your room or by the river in the evening.
Topped with nuts, so not for anyone with a nut allergy; the glaze is sweet rather than very hot.
Maneul sundae (garlic blood sausage)
Korean sundae — pork intestine stuffed with glass noodles, vegetables, glutinous rice and blood — made with whole Danyang garlic cloves to soften the smell of the sausage. VisitKorea calls it one of the best-known garlic dishes in the county. Garlic sundae soup (sundaeguk) is the hot version.
- Where to look
- Sundae and sundaeguk restaurants in and around Gugyeong Market.
- Fit it into your day
- Lunch, or a bowl of sundaeguk for breakfast before Dodamsambong.
Contains pork and blood; not for vegetarians.
Garlic bread, dumplings and market snacks
Market traders have built a whole range of garlic snacks: garlic dumplings fried in garlic oil, garlic pancakes, garlic bread and small garlic balls. VisitKorea also lists local drinks such as Sobaeksan makgeolli and black-garlic makgeolli.
- Where to look
- Gugyeong Traditional Market. VisitKorea's listing gives market hours of 09:00–20:00, varying by shop; on dates ending in 1 and 6 the five-day market adds stalls of local vegetables, beans and Sobaeksan wild greens.
- Fit it into your day
- Graze through the market in the late afternoon before dinner.
Individual shops keep their own hours and closing days.
Mancheonha Skywalk and the river cliffs
The Mancheonha Skywalk stands on a cliff 80 to 90 metres above the Namhangang, facing the town. A horseshoe-shaped observatory, Manhakcheonbong, ends in three glass walkways, each 15 metres long and 2 metres wide, looking down on the river and across to downtown Danyang and Yeonhwabong Peak in Sobaeksan. Zip wires, an alpine coaster, a mountain slide and a monorail share the hillside.
When we checked on 2026-10-03, the operator, Danyang Tourism Corporation, listed skywalk hours of 09:00 to 18:00 in summer (tickets on site from 09:00 to 17:00) and 09:00 to 17:00 in winter (tickets until 16:00), with the rides opening at 10:00. Adult skywalk admission was 4,000 won. The operator warns that the observatory can only be reached by its shuttle bus, that waits can exceed an hour in peak season, and that heavy rain, snow or fog may limit the visit. The operator also advises bringing a hat or parasol against the sun. Check its notices for holiday hours and closing days before you go.
Nearby, the Danyanggang Jando Trail is a 1.2-kilometre walkway along the Namhangang, easy to combine with the skywalk. Also close by, the Suyanggae Light Tunnel is a 200-metre tunnel built during the Japanese occupation and long disused, now fitted with LED, video and sound installations. When we checked, VisitKorea listed it as open 16:00–21:00, closed on Mondays, at 9,000 won for adults, which makes it an evening option. The Suyanggae exhibition hall at the same address displays Palaeolithic finds from the area.

Paragliding over the Namhangang
UNESCO calls Danyang's paragliding facility the largest in Korea, and the reason is the terrain. VisitKorea's market feature says flights from Yangbangsan, a 664-metre peak above the town, are possible on about 300 days a year, against about 70 elsewhere, and that its two landing sites let pilots land safely whatever the wind. A flight from take-off to landing lasts about ten minutes, with the river loop, Woraksan and Geumsusan below you. You do not need experience: commercial operators sell tandem flights with a pilot.
As an example of how it works, VisitKorea's listing for Danyang Paravillage in Gagok-myeon describes the steps as a consent form, a safety briefing and a tandem flight with your pilot. When we checked on 2026-10-03, it listed hours of 09:00 to 18:30, varying with the weather, an age range of 3 to 100, and a basic flight at 89,900 won, with its Semi-Art, Art and VVIP flights priced higher.
Weather decides everything. Book for the morning of a two-day stay so that a cancelled slot can move to the afternoon or the next day and ask what the price includes and how you get to the take-off site.

Caves: Gosu and Ondal
Danyang's limestone has two show caves that are easy to visit. Gosu Cave (Gosudonggul), a Natural Monument close to the town centre, runs for almost 1,700 metres, with stalactites, stalagmites, underground pools and cave pearls. When we checked on 2026-10-03, VisitKorea listed opening from 09:00 to 17:00 every day and admission of 11,000 won for adults, 7,000 for teenagers and 5,000 for children.
Ondal Cave (Ondaldonggul), at the foot of Seongsan Mountain in Yeongchun-myeon, is about 760 metres long and has an underground stream along its floor. On the hill above it is Ondalsanseong, a Goguryeo-era fortress that VisitKorea says has kept its original form for some 1,400 years. Both are tied to the legend of General Ondal and Princess Pyeonggang, which the Ondal Culture Festival celebrates every October. When we checked, VisitKorea listed hours of 09:00–18:00 in summer and 09:00–17:00 in winter, with last entry an hour before closing, and 6,000 won for adults.
VisitKorea pairs Bobaljae Pass with nearby Guinsa Temple and the Ondal area, so the three make a half-day by car or taxi. VisitKorea lists Guinsa as free and open around the clock, with temple-stay programmes. Bobaljae is an S-shaped mountain road at 540 metres on the northern side of Sobaeksan, known for wildflowers in spring and foliage in autumn, with a viewing deck where you can park and take photos.

With a second day: Sainam, the lake and Sobaeksan
Sainam Rock, south of the town on Namjocheon Stream, is a sheer granite cliff that VisitKorea puts at 70 metres, cut by joints into what look like stacked square columns. It is free and open at all hours. Gudambong and Oksunbong, two more of the Eight Scenic Views, rise above Chungjuho Lake; VisitKorea recommends seeing the lake by cruise boat, and Janghoe Quay is the most popular of its terminals. When we checked on 2026-10-03, VisitKorea listed a Janghoe–Oksunbong cruise at 14,000 won for adults and a round trip to Cheongpung Quay at 19,000 won, with boats running between 09:00 and 18:00 and a round trip taking about one to one and a half hours. It notes that fares may change.
Sobaeksan National Park rises above the town. Its highest peak, Birobong (1,439 metres), has open grassland near the summit, and the Sobaeksan Royal Azalea Festival is held in May. The Sobaeksan Optical Astronomy Observatory stands on Yeonhwabong (1,349 metres). VisitKorea says private visitors must walk up from Jungnyeong Pass or Huibangsa Temple, and lists daytime visits between 13:00 and 16:00. Treat a summit as a full day and check the park's trail notices first.
Without a car, a two-day plan is easiest as: Mancheonha Skywalk, the market and the light tunnel (closed on Mondays) on day one; Dodamsambong, Gosu Cave and paragliding on day two. Add Ondal, Guinsa and Bobaljae, or Sainam and Janghoe Quay, by taxi if you stay longer. Danyang also sits on the railway between Seoul and Andong, so it works as the first stop on a slow route south through Yeongju to Andong.
Practical questions
Is Danyang worth an overnight stay?
Yes. The main sights are on different sides of the river, and paragliding depends on the weather, so one night gives you the skywalk and the market in the evening and Dodamsambong and a flight the next morning, with time to rebook a cancelled flight.
How do I get to Danyang from Seoul?
By train on the Jungang Line to Danyang Station, which most KTX-Eum trains serve, or by intercity bus from Dong Seoul Terminal, which VisitKorea lists among its Danyang routes. The station is on the south bank of the river; the bus terminal is in the town centre near the market. Check current times on Korail or at the terminal before you travel.
How much is tandem paragliding in Danyang?
Prices vary by company and flight. When we checked on 2026-10-03, VisitKorea's listing for Danyang Paravillage gave 89,900 won for a basic flight, with longer flights costing more. Flights run only in suitable weather.
How do I get up to the Mancheonha Skywalk?
By the operator's shuttle bus: Danyang Tourism Corporation says this is the only way up to the observatory. Waits can be over an hour in peak season, so arrive early.
When are Danyang's market days?
Gugyeong Traditional Market is open daily, and the larger five-day market is held on dates ending in 1 and 6 (the 1st, 6th, 11th, 16th, 21st, 26th and 31st).
Is Danyang a UNESCO site?
The county was designated a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2025 for its geology, which includes the Dodamsambong pillars, limestone caves and karst. It is not a World Heritage Site.

Does this experience fit your route?
If you would rather not handle trains and taxis, a guided day trip from Seoul is the simplest option. Danyang is a long day out, so check the time on the ground and whether paragliding is included or extra.
