Kansai
7 days in Kansai: Kyoto, Osaka, Nara and a manageable extra stop
A week in Kansai can join Osaka, Kyoto, Nara and Himeji without changing hotels in every city. Two bases leave more room for local meals and focused neighbourhood days, with the arrival and departure kept realistic.

- Suggested time
- 7 full days on site
- Where to stay
- Osaka and Kyoto
- Season and timing
- Spring and autumn suit walks; adapt the day to rain, heat and crowds.
The short answer
Use Osaka and Kyoto as bases, giving Himeji and Nara their own excursion days. This is an editorial seven-day outline; a long arrival or early flight reduces sightseeing time and should shorten the programme.
Days 1–2: Settle into Osaka
Use the first suitable block for Namba and Dotonbori, with a meal near the hotel if the day includes a long flight. Give the next full day another city theme, such as the castle park or Nakanoshima and Umeda. One guided food walk can provide context, but should fit the appetite and district rather than adding a second dinner to a full tasting.
Day 3: Himeji as a dedicated excursion
Leave the main bag at the Osaka base and give the castle, Kokoen and lunch a proper day. Check current castle admission and the return train before setting out. Do not attach a full Kobe visit simply because the cities share a railway direction. Moving to Kyoto after the excursion can work only when the luggage and late arrival are arranged.

Make time for the local food
What to eat and where to look
Osaka takoyaki
Octopus-filled batter balls make a compact taste during the Minami walk. Sauce and toppings should be checked.
- Where to look
- A current shop near the Osaka route
- Fit it into your day
- A snack on an Osaka city day.
Osaka okonomiyaki
A substantial griddle dish can anchor dinner, rather than accompany a long list of fried snacks.
- Where to look
- Restaurants near the Osaka base
- Fit it into your day
- One seated city meal.
Nara kakinoha-zushi
Sushi wrapped in persimmon leaves provides a Nara regional taste. Follow the package instructions and remove the wrapping leaf.
- Where to look
- Current Nara specialist shops
- Fit it into your day
- A small lunch purchase during the excursion.
Himeji oden
Oden with ginger soy sauce offers a Himeji meal interest around the castle day.
- Where to look
- Menus on the station-to-castle route
- Fit it into your day
- Lunch before the return, without another food-only city stop.
Days 4–5: Kyoto by areas
Move to Kyoto, then choose a manageable district for the arrival afternoon. Spend the following full day in one main area rather than crossing repeatedly between east and west. Gion requires respect for private streets and people working there. A tofu or obanzai meal can be part of the day, with the actual restaurant and menu chosen near the route.

Days 6–7: Nara and a realistic departure
Give Nara a full excursion block for Todaiji, the park and either Kasuga Taisha or Naramachi according to interest. The last day returns to a Kyoto visit that fits the onward journey. An early flight is not a full city day. Compare rail tickets and passes using the actual journeys and operator coverage; the number of city names does not establish value.
Practical questions
What is the most useful first planning decision?
Use Osaka and Kyoto as bases, giving Himeji and Nara their own excursion days. This is an editorial seven-day outline; a long arrival or early flight reduces sightseeing time and should shorten the programme.
Is a guided visit necessary?
An independent visit can work with a clear route and current access information. Compare the actual guided programme for interpretation or practical support, including the meeting place and what is covered.
How should food fit the route?
Choose one main meal near the planned visit and leave smaller tastes optional. Check the actual menu, ingredients and opening before making a restaurant the only lunch option.
