Ba Na Hills guide: Golden Bridge, cable cars and beating the crowds
Ba Na Hills is a mountaintop resort in the Truong Son range west of Da Nang, about 1,487 m above sea level. The French built a hill station here in 1919; today it is Sun World Ba Na Hills, a privately run theme park reached by cable car, with the Golden Bridge held up by two giant stone hands, a mock French Village, flower gardens, pagodas and an indoor amusement park. It is not a nature escape and it is not quiet, but the cable car ride, the cool air and the bridge are why most visitors to Da Nang give it a day. Whether that day is good depends almost entirely on when you go up and what the cloud is doing.

- Suggested time
- 1 full day from Da Nang, or 1 night on the mountain
- Where to stay
- Da Nang (Hai Chau riverside or My Khe Beach); Mercure Ba Na Hills French Village on the summit for an overnight
- Season and timing
- Vietnam Tourism names March to May and September to October as the best months for Da Nang, with June to August dry; November to February brings long rains. The summit is cooler than the coast all year and the weather can change within the day.
The short answer
Give Ba Na Hills one full day from Da Nang, or add a night on the summit if you want to see the resort in the evening and early morning. Sleep in Da Nang (Hai Chau on the Han River or near My Khe Beach) and go up as early as the cable cars allow; the park's own guide says to see the Golden Bridge and French Village in the morning and plan the rest by area. Book tickets in advance, take a car (about 30–60 minutes) or the free Sun World bus from central Da Nang, and bring a light jacket. If the summit is lost in cloud and your dates are flexible, move the visit to a clearer day.
Is Ba Na Hills worth a day?
Be clear about what you are buying. Ba Na Hills is a single, ticketed resort run by Sun World, not a national park: the ticket covers the cable cars up and down and the attractions on top, and most of what you see on top was built as an attraction. Vietnam Tourism describes it as a family-friendly day out — flower gardens, a French village, Linh Ung temple, the castle-like amusement park and, above all, photographs on the Golden Bridge. Of the French resort founded in 1919, Vietnam Tourism notes, most villas were destroyed during the war; the old Debay Wine Cellar survives.
It is worth it if you are travelling with children, if you want the cable car ride and the cool mountain air after a few hot days on the coast, or if the Golden Bridge is on your list. It is a poor use of a day if you are looking for forest walks, local life or a quiet viewpoint — for forest and mountain scenery without a theme park, look at our Bach Ma guide instead. And it is a gamble in heavy cloud: the park itself sells the summit as a place of 'four seasons in a day', which in practice means the weather on top can change quickly.
Sun World's own figures give a sense of the scale: the company says Ba Na received only 30,000 to 40,000 visitors a year before its first cable car opened on 25 March 2009, and that more than 60% of Da Nang's 8.6 million visitors in 2019 went up the mountain. Expect queues and crowds, and plan to stay ahead of them.
Beat the crowds and the cloud: go up early
Every official source points the same way. Sun World's one-day guide tells visitors to start early to avoid the peak-hour crowds and to see the Golden Bridge, the French Village and the flower gardens in the morning, when the weather is pleasant and the light is better; its cable car page repeats the advice and adds that weekends and peak seasons are especially busy. Vietnam Tourism advises buying tickets in advance to skip the queues.
When we checked on 2026-10-03, Sun World's website listed the park as open from 08:00 to 22:00 every day, with the ticket office open from 8:00 to 22:00 and the cable cars running from around 8:00 to 19:00 — times it says can move by 15 to 30 minutes depending on the weather on the summit. Aim to be at the lower station when the cable cars start, rather than later in the morning.
Look at the sky before you set off. If the mountains west of Da Nang are buried in rain cloud, the Golden Bridge may be a white-out. On a day of broken cloud, though, an early start can put you above a sea of cloud with the summit in sunshine. If you have more than one day in Da Nang, keep Ba Na flexible and pick the clearest morning. Bring a light jacket in any season: Sun World notes that the summit is usually cooler than the city, and the Da Nang tourism portal suggests a sweater because the temperature drops as you climb.

Make time for the local food
What to eat and where to look

Buffet lunch on the summit
With outside food banned, most visitors eat at one of the resort's buffet restaurants or Asian and European food courts. Sun World sells combo tickets that bundle entry with a buffet.
- Where to look
- The restaurants and food courts on the summit; compare a combo ticket with paying separately when you book.
- Fit it into your day
- An early lunch between the Golden Bridge in the morning and the French Village or Fantasy Park in the afternoon.
You cannot bring your own snacks or drinks into the park, so plan for children's meals and dietary needs on the mountain.
Craft beer at Vietnam's highest brewery
Sun World says Ba Na has the highest-altitude brewery in Vietnam, part of its European-themed summit. A beer here is a way to sit down in the cool air rather than a reason to go up.
- Where to look
- The brewery on the summit; check the park map on arrival for its location.
- Fit it into your day
- A mid-afternoon break before the last cable cars down.
Do not drink if you are riding a motorbike back down the mountain road to Da Nang.
Mi Quang (Quang-style noodles)
Soft wide rice noodles with boiled pork, quail eggs and sautéed shrimp, a little turmeric-infused broth, chilli, peanuts and fresh herbs — the dish Vietnam Tourism puts first on a Da Nang lunch list.
- Where to look
- Small mi Quang specialists in central Da Nang; eat it in the city rather than on the mountain.
- Fit it into your day
- Breakfast or a late lunch on the day after Ba Na, or dinner back in the city.
Contains pork, shrimp and peanuts; ask what goes into the bowl if you have allergies.
Bun ca (fish noodle soup)
Fish from the waters off Da Nang marinated with turmeric and spices, served over rice noodles in a broth of fish bones, pumpkin, cabbage, pineapple and tomato, finished with sprouts, herbs, lime and chilli, as Vietnam Tourism describes it.
- Where to look
- Noodle shops in central Da Nang, mostly at breakfast and lunch.
- Fit it into your day
- A quick, light breakfast before an early start for the cable cars.
Fish-based throughout; season it yourself at the table.
The cable cars: which line goes where
The ride up is half the point of the trip. Sun World says the system has six lines and twelve stations, with four main lines in daily use and two back-ups for busy periods; the ride from the foot of the mountain takes about 20 to 25 minutes depending on the weather, in glass cabins for six to eight people over forest and waterfalls. The longest line, from Toc Tien Waterfall station to L'Indochine, is listed at 5,771.61 m. Which line you take decides where you arrive, so look at the order you want to see things before you queue (the station names are themed, not towns):
- Hoi An – Marseille: foot of the mountain to the mid-mountain area, for the Golden Bridge, the Debay Wine Cellar, Linh Ung Pagoda and the Le Jardin D'Amour flower gardens. This is the line for a Golden Bridge-first morning.
- Bordeaux – Louvre: mid-mountain to the peak, for the Moon Castle and Eclipse Square.
- Champa – Taiga: foot of the mountain directly to the peak, for the French Village, the bell tower and Ba Temple.
- Toc Tien Waterfall – L'Indochine: the long line from the foot straight to the peak area, for Forever Square, Sun God Waterfall and Fantasy Park.
- Back-up lines (Suoi Mo – Ba Na and Debay – Morin) run at busy times to take pressure off the main lines.

On top: the Golden Bridge, French Village and the rest
The Golden Bridge (Cau Vang) is a gold-coloured walkway that Vietnam Tourism puts at 150 m long, curving along the mountainside on two enormous hands made to look like weathered stone. It is the most photographed spot on the mountain and the one where crowds build first, so walk it early, take your photographs and move on. The viewpoints and gardens around the mid-mountain station — Le Jardin D'Amour, the Debay Wine Cellar and Linh Ung Pagoda — are close by.
The French Village on the summit is a recreated European town of castles, a church, squares and cobbled lanes, used by most visitors as a backdrop. Sun World also lists the Moon Castle, Sun Falls, Eclipse Square and seasonal flower displays, and the Fantasy Park is a large indoor amusement area with games for different ages — useful for families and when the weather turns. Sun World's one-day guide suggests grouping the visit by area to avoid going back and forth between stations.
In the evening the resort runs a 'Ba Na by Night' programme with lighting, music and food. When we checked on 2026-10-03, Sun World's FAQ said the shuttle from the city was available with its Ba Na Night Combo, a ticket with cable car access after 16:00; check what that ticket includes before choosing it.
Getting there: car, the free Sun World bus or a tour
Sun World places the resort about 25–30 km south-west of central Da Nang and says the drive takes about 40 to 60 minutes by car, depending on traffic; its FAQ gives about 30 minutes from downtown, and Vietnam Tourism says 40 minutes. Taxis and ride-hailing cars are the simplest option for families. The Da Nang tourism portal warns that it can be hard to find a taxi for the return, so agree the pick-up with your driver or keep a ride-hailing app ready. From Hoi An, the portal puts the distance at around 60–70 km.
When we checked on 2026-10-03, Sun World listed a free shuttle bus from Da Nang, introduced on 8 August 2026: two morning departures at 08:30 and 09:30 from the lobby of the Novotel Danang Premier Han River (36–38 Bach Dang Street), with pick-up points also listed at East Sea Park, opposite My Khe Beach next to the DLG Hotel, Vegas Club and 99 Vo Nguyen Giap Street, and one return trip from Ba Na at 16:00. Seats are limited, Sun World asks passengers to register a day in advance through the QR code on its page and to be at the stop 10–15 minutes early, and it says the schedule may change. The bus is free, but it gets you up later than a car at opening time.
Organised day trips from Da Nang take care of the transfer; see the box above. Check whether the Sun World ticket and lunch are included and what time the tour leaves the city — a later departure means a later start on the mountain.

Tickets, food and rules on the mountain
Buy tickets on Sun World's official booking site or app, or from a reseller you trust, and read the change and refund conditions before you pay; when we checked on 2026-10-03, the park's FAQ said tickets were non-refundable and could not be changed. Discounted resident tickets are only for people from Da Nang, and staff check original ID at the gate before the cable car, so do not rely on someone else's card. Sun World also advertised a 2026 '1 ticket – 3 days' upgrade at the counter with FaceID registration; ask at the counter if you plan to return. We do not quote ticket prices here because they change; check the official booking page for your date.
No outside food or drinks are allowed, according to the park's FAQ, a rule it has applied since 1 October 2018. That means eating on the mountain: Sun World lists buffet restaurants and Asian and European food courts, and sells combo tickets that include a buffet. A luggage storage room is available at the entrance gate until the end of visiting hours, so leave bulky bags there; Sun World also advises against carrying heavy luggage between cable car stations.
Practical questions
How long do I need at Ba Na Hills?
Plan a full day. The cable car ride alone takes about 20 to 25 minutes each way, according to Sun World, and the Golden Bridge, French Village, gardens and Fantasy Park are spread over several areas linked by different lines. Staying overnight on the summit adds the evening and the early morning on the mountain.
What time does Ba Na Hills open?
When we checked on 2026-10-03, Sun World listed the park as open from 08:00 to 22:00 daily and the cable cars as running from around 8:00 to 19:00, with times that can shift by 15 to 30 minutes depending on the weather. Check the official site on the day.
Is there a bus from Da Nang to Ba Na Hills?
When we checked on 2026-10-03, Sun World listed a free shuttle bus introduced on 8 August 2026, leaving the Novotel Danang Premier Han River on Bach Dang Street at 08:30 and 09:30 and returning from Ba Na at 16:00, with registration a day in advance. Seats are limited and the schedule may change.
Can I bring food and drinks?
No. Sun World's FAQ says outside food and drinks are not allowed. You will eat at the buffets and food courts on the summit; combo tickets with a buffet are sold.
Is it worth going if it is cloudy?
Light or broken cloud can be beautiful, with the summit above a sea of cloud, but in heavy rain cloud the Golden Bridge and the views may disappear. If your dates are flexible, choose the clearest morning of your stay and go up early.
Should I visit Ba Na Hills from Hoi An?
You can, but it is a long day: the Da Nang tourism portal puts Ba Na around 60–70 km from Hoi An, against 25–35 km from central Da Nang. If you are staying in both towns, do Ba Na from Da Nang.
