Khon Kaen travel guide: Isan food, a city lake and dinosaur country
Khon Kaen is the modern hub of central Isan: a university city with an airport, a railway station and a lively food scene. It has few classic sights, but plenty of reasons to stop — a big lake in the middle of town, some of the region's best eating, and, an hour or so west, the hills where Thailand's first dinosaur fossil was found.

- Suggested time
- 1–2 days
- Where to stay
- Khon Kaen city centre
- Season and timing
- November to February is coolest and driest.
The short answer
Spend one or two days. Walk or cycle around Kaen Nakhon Lake in the evening, eat Isan food in town — a Khon Kaen kitchen won TAT's national khao gaeng championship in 2025 — and take a day trip to Phu Wiang National Park for the dinosaur fossil sites. Khon Kaen's airport and railway make it an easy hub for Udon Thani, Nong Khai and Phimai.
Kaen Nakhon Lake
Kaen Nakhon Lake is a natural lake in the middle of the city, ringed by a shady road and paths used for walking, running and cycling, according to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports' directory. A shrine to the city's founder stands on its shore, and pedal boats are available for rent.
Come in the late afternoon, when locals exercise and food stalls set up; it is the easiest way to feel the rhythm of the city.
Eating in Khon Kaen
TAT describes Isan food as bold and spicy — sticky rice, grilled meats, som tam and larb, seasoned with pla ra, chilli, lime and fresh herbs. In Khon Kaen you can eat it everywhere, from market stalls to Kaen, a Michelin-recommended restaurant whose seasonal menu TAT highlights.
In October 2025, Uthayan Khao Gaeng from Khon Kaen won the first national Khao Gaeng Thai Curry Rice Championship organised by TAT and the Thai Restaurant Association. Rice-and-curry shops are a good, inexpensive lunch.

Phu Wiang National Park and its dinosaurs
West of the city, Phu Wiang National Park is a ring of mountains around a basin, covering about 325 square kilometres, as the directory describes. In 1976 a geologist found a sauropod thigh bone here — the first dinosaur fossil discovered in Thailand. The directory lists nine excavation sites, four of them open to visitors, and opening hours of 8:30 to 17:00, closed on Mondays except public holidays.
On the road to the park, the Si Wiang Dinosaur Park has life-size models, popular with families. You need a car or driver for the day.

A hub for Isan
Khon Kaen sits on the main north-eastern railway and road between Korat and Udon Thani, and its airport has flights to Bangkok. That makes it a convenient base for Udon Thani and Nong Khai to the north or Phimai to the south.
Hotels cluster in the centre near the markets and the lake.
