Taiwan west coast in 6 days: Taipei, Taichung and Tainan by HSR

Taiwan’s western railway corridor makes a compact city journey possible, but the memorable parts happen after the station transfer. Taipei supplies the opening days, Taichung brings a greenway and an art stop, and Tainan ends the southbound journey with temples and a slower meal. Three hotel bases are enough; the last day is kept for reaching the departure airport rather than another city.

The short answer

Spend five nights along Taiwan’s western rail corridor: two in Taipei, one in Taichung and two in Tainan, with city days between the day 3 and day 4 transfers. Day 2 belongs to Taipei, day 3 combines the Taichung arrival with a modest city outing, and day 5 stays in Tainan. THSR connects the cities, while conventional rail or another confirmed local connection completes the hotel journey. This version returns north for a Taoyuan flight on day 6; choose that flight only after checking the full return connection.

Days 1–2: give Taipei a proper beginning

On day 1, reach the Taipei room and keep the first evening nearby, so the arrival does not depend on another train or distant sightseeing stop. Day 2 can then belong to the older city around Dadaocheng, with its shophouses and a meal before returning to the same hotel. There is no need to add a suburban excursion to this short opening stay. Having two nights here also means the luggage is settled before the southbound rail journey begins on day 3.

Day 3: reach Taichung, then stay close to the greenway

Take the booked THSR service to Taichung, followed by the actual city connection rather than assuming the high-speed station is the downtown railway station. The city transport page checked on 2026-10-08 describes the link through New Wuri and onward conventional rail. Once the luggage is at the hotel, give the afternoon to Calligraphy Greenway and, if its visitor arrangements suit, the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts. The tree-lined connection gives the day a coherent shape without promising time for every museum. Sleep in Taichung.

Make time for the local food

What to eat and where to look

A brown-sugar sun cake photographed as a Taichung specialty; individual bakery ingredients differ.
01

Taipei beef noodle soup

The national guide describes beef cooked into soup with spicy bean paste, followed by the noodles; each kitchen has its own version.

Where to look
A current noodle-shop menu near the actual Taipei walk or hotel.
Fit it into your day
Give day 2 a seated lunch before continuing the older-city visit.

Contains beef; ask about wheat, soy, spice, broth and other ingredients.

02

Taichung sun cakes

Taichung’s food guide describes a layered pastry crust around a sweet maltose filling.

Where to look
City bakeries actually offering sun cakes; compare their own ingredient information.
Fit it into your day
Share one after the day 3 greenway outing or take it back to the room.

Check milk, egg, wheat and other ingredients with the bakery; the tourism description does not establish a vegetarian or allergen-free recipe.

03

Tainan milkfish porridge

The city’s first-visitor guide describes milkfish cooked with rice and oysters in fish-bone broth. This is a documented preparation rather than every shop’s recipe.

Where to look
An actual milkfish or porridge menu in central Tainan.
Fit it into your day
A seated breakfast or lunch on day 5 leaves the heritage walk room to unfold.

Contains fish and, in the cited version, oysters, which are molluscs. Check bones, broth, other ingredients and the cooking you require.

Days 4–5: settle into Tainan before the heritage walk

Continue south by THSR on day 4, then complete the city transfer before beginning the Tainan visit. The operator identifies a corridor to TRA Shalun and a separate train towards downtown Tainan; that last leg belongs in the plan. Keep the arrival afternoon modest, then use day 5 for the Confucius Temple area and Guohua Street, with a seated local meal between walks. The city’s first-visitor guide recommends a slower pace through its heritage streets. Both nights remain in the same central Tainan room.

Day 6: return north with the airport journey already settled

This itinerary finishes in Tainan but uses a Taoyuan departure, so day 6 is a travel day. Check the local journey to Shalun, the northbound THSR service to Taoyuan and the Airport MRT connection from A18 to the actual terminal before selecting the flight. THSR’s booking instructions require payment and ticket collection to be completed, with booking identification and the reservation number retained. A last temple or extra rail stop is optional only after that departure plan is secure; the southbound city visits have already had their time.

Practical questions

How many hotel changes does this 6-day route involve?

There are two changes: after two Taipei nights, stay one night in Taichung and then two in Tainan. Day 6 is reserved for the departure journey.

Is Taichung HSR Station the downtown railway station?

No. The city describes a separate connection through New Wuri and conventional rail towards Taichung Station. Choose the final hotel transfer for its actual address rather than the city name alone.

Does Tainan HSR Station arrive in the historic center?

No. The operator describes the corridor to TRA Shalun and a separate train towards downtown Tainan. Complete that connection before treating the arrival as the start of the heritage walk.

Can I fly from Taoyuan after the last Tainan night?

This version does, but the flight must fit the full northbound rail and Airport MRT journey. Use the actual service search, complete ticketing and leave a generous flight margin; no fixed transfer time is assumed.
