Central Taiwan in 4 days: Taichung and Sun Moon Lake
A city evening and a lake morning belong to different rhythms. This short central Taiwan route gives Taichung the arrival, then moves the luggage once to Sun Moon Lake, where the following day can unfold around the water. The journey between them is part of the plan rather than an interval to fill with another destination.

- Suggested time
- 4 days and 3 nights: 1 night Taichung, 2 nights Shuishe
- Where to stay
- Taichung city for arrival, then Shuishe at Sun Moon Lake
- Season and timing
- Choose dates against current weather and lake-route notices; the plan does not assume every walking path is open.
The short answer
Spend three nights between Taichung and Shuishe: one in Taichung for day 1, then two in Shuishe, with day 2 for the transfer and day 3 for the lake. Day 4 is for departure. Choose a Taichung hotel by the station you actually use, then a Shuishe room around the shuttle arrival area. Keep the lake day focused on a chosen shoreline visit and Ita Thau rather than a compulsory full circuit. Check the current shuttle departures and route notices before booking; the closed Shuishe Mountain Trail is excluded.
Day 1: settle into Taichung before the lake journey
Keep the first night in Taichung, matching the hotel to the actual arrival station: the high-speed station is in Wuri, while the conventional railway continues to the city station. If arrival leaves time, Calligraphy Greenway offers a tree-lined walk between the museum areas rather than another hotel move. A thick noodle soup gives the evening a proper meal, with a bakery stop for a sun cake if you want something smaller afterward. Leave the lake transfer for the morning.
Day 2: move to Shuishe and let the water set the pace
The scenic-area authority lists tourist-shuttle departures from both Taichung railway and high-speed-rail stations. Choose the actual service and arrival stop before checking out, then settle into the Shuishe room that will remain your base for both lake nights. Its shops and hotels make the arrival area a practical place for a meal and a first waterfront look. Keep the afternoon deliberately local: luggage, lunch and a short walk are enough without promising a boat connection or a complete lakeside circuit.

Make time for the local food
What to eat and where to look

Taichung thick noodle soup
The city’s version is described with thick noodles, shrimp, Chinese leek, fried garlic and dried radish in a thick soup.
- Where to look
- Shops serving thick noodle soup, using the city’s food guide as a starting point.
- Fit it into your day
- Make it a meal stop rather than adding it after several large market dishes.
The cited version contains shrimp; ask about the stock and other ingredients if you have dietary restrictions.
Sun cakes
A Taichung specialty with a layered pastry crust and a sweet maltose filling.
- Where to look
- Bakeries selling Taichung sun cakes; the city tourism guide lists them among its signature foods.
- Fit it into your day
- Share one after a museum visit or keep it as a bakery souvenir.
Ask the bakery about ingredients and allergens; the tourism description does not establish a milk-free, egg-free or vegetarian recipe.
Black-tea egg rolls
The authority describes crispy egg rolls made with Assam black tea and milk, sold near Shuishe Pier.
- Where to look
- Specialty shops around Shuishe Pier.
- Fit it into your day
- Share them after a walk or take a pack back to the hotel.
The cited product includes milk; ask about eggs and other bakery allergens and follow the maker’s storage advice.
Day 3: give the lake and Ita Thau one unhurried day
With the luggage staying in Shuishe, use day 3 for a selected lakeside visit and a separately checked connection to Ita Thau. The national guide describes a living Thau community with shops, restaurants and accommodation, so lunch and the village deserve time alongside the water. Yuchi tea and black-tea egg rolls give the food stops a regional thread. Confirm the transport you choose and its return; this is a flexible lake day, not a promise that every pier, boat or shoreline path forms one continuous route.

Day 4: return through the connection you have confirmed
Keep day 4 for departure through Taichung rather than another mountain excursion. The lake authority lists the shuttle to the railway connections; match the service with your onward ticket and any airport transfer before leaving Shuishe. Its notice checked on 2026-10-08 says Shuishe Mountain Trail is temporarily closed after severe natural-disaster damage, with an update dated 2026-09-14. That particular trail stays outside this itinerary. A final meal near the departure connection is more useful than adding a distant stop that puts the booked journey at risk.
Practical questions
How many nights does this four-day route need?
The suggested allocation is three nights: one in Taichung and two in Shuishe. That keeps a full lake day between the transfer and departure, without changing the lake hotel.
Which Taichung station should I use?
Compare the ticket with the actual hotel and shuttle departure. THSR Taichung is in Wuri, and the city arrival guide distinguishes it from the conventional Taichung railway station via New Wuri.
Does this include Shuishe Mountain Trail?
No. The scenic-area closure notice checked on 2026-10-08, updated 2026-09-14, says the trail is temporarily closed after severe damage. Check the exact shoreline route separately; that closure does not mean every lake path is closed.
Can I fly straight into Taichung for this route?
Use Taichung International Airport only when its flights fit your booked journey. The city guide lists airport bus connections, while the lake authority lists separate airport and shuttle options; confirm the actual departure and final hotel connection.
