Where to stay in Taiwan: city bases, lakeside hotels and homestays
The most useful room in Taiwan is often the one that makes the next morning easy. A city hotel keeps meals and arrival arrangements together, while a lakeside stay gives the scenery its own part of the trip. Neither a station name nor a photograph of water tells you how the last journey to the door works. Start with the place you want to spend time, then compare the particular address, room and transport before booking.

- Suggested time
- A suggested seven nights across two bases; adapt the allocation to the actual transport and interests
- Where to stay
- Taipei, then Shuishe or Ita Thau at Sun Moon Lake
- Season and timing
- Check the property's actual booking conditions and transport notices for your dates; room availability and a scenic photograph do not guarantee an outing.
The short answer
Spend seven nights between Taipei and Sun Moon Lake: four in Taipei for city days and arrival connections, then three beside the lake for walks and a separate local outing. This is a suggested allocation, rather than a requirement to change hotels every day. Choose Shuishe for a stay around the tourist-shuttle arrival area, or Ita Thau for its village setting with restaurants and hotels. Confirm the final connection before choosing the lake side, and use the official TaiwanStay directory to check the property rather than relying on a booking photograph.
Let the arrival decide the city address
Taipei is a useful first base when your trip starts there, but a hotel described as near the station still needs an exact address. Compare the airport railway's current route map with the entrance you will use and the final walk or taxi arrangement. For a stay in Tainan, the official accommodation directory displays hotels in different city districts, so choose the location for the walks you intend to make. A room kept for several nights leaves more of the city day for a meal than another checkout.
Choose a lake side before choosing a room
The Tourism Administration describes Shuishe as an area with many hotels and shops, with tourist-shuttle connections to the lake. Ita Thau also has hotels, restaurants and shops, but its listed arrival requires a separate connection around the lake. That difference matters more than a similar waterfront photograph. Choose one side for the stay, check the actual bus stop and luggage arrangement, then make the other a local outing rather than moving rooms simply to see both.

Make time for the local food
What to eat and where to look
Braised pork rice
The national snacks guide describes pork and sauce over rice, seasoned with soy sauce, chopped red onions and spices.
- Where to look
- A confirmed city restaurant or vendor near the hotel; compare the current menu.
- Fit it into your day
- An arrival meal after the hotel connection, without adding another sightseeing transfer.
Contains pork in the cited preparation; ask about soy, sauces and other ingredients.
Beef noodles
The Tourism Administration describes beef cooked with water and spicy bean paste, with noodles added to the soup.
- Where to look
- City restaurants with a current beef-noodle menu.
- Fit it into your day
- A sit-down lunch between city outings from the same room.
Contains beef; ask about wheat, bean paste, broth and other ingredients.
Oyster omelet
The national guide describes oysters with potato starch and tapioca, with egg and leafy vegetables fried in a skillet and served with sauce.
- Where to look
- A current city night-market or restaurant menu, with the hotel return arranged separately.
- Fit it into your day
- An evening dish on a city night when the ingredients suit the traveler.
Contains oysters, a mollusc, and egg in the cited version; check sauce and shared cooking surfaces.
Use the legal directory for the property and its facilities
TaiwanStay, linked by the Tourism Administration, provides a legal-accommodation search that distinguishes tourist hotels, hotels and homestays. Its filters include accessible rooms, vegetarian dining, bicycle-friendly accommodation and a hot-spring mark. Use those filters to find candidates, then ask about the particular room: bathroom access, bed arrangement, breakfast, storage and the final journey from the stop. A search category identifies a possible match; it does not establish that every room has the same facilities or that every meal meets your requirements.

Make a specialist stay earn its place
A hot-spring stay belongs on a day when the bath is part of the visit, rather than an extra transfer squeezed between city appointments. The official directory lets you search areas such as Jiaoxi and Zhiben separately and compare accommodation with a hot-spring mark. Confirm what the room rate actually includes, whether bathing needs a reservation and how the property handles arrival. The same approach works for a homestay: settle the bathroom, meals and transport with the host before treating the setting as the whole experience.

Practical questions
Where should I stay on a first Taiwan trip?
For this suggested seven-night plan, use Taipei for four nights and Sun Moon Lake for three. Choose the lake side around your actual arrival and local journeys, keeping one room rather than changing hotels to see both Shuishe and Ita Thau.
Should I stay in Shuishe or Ita Thau?
Shuishe has hotels and shops around the tourist-shuttle arrival area. Ita Thau offers a village setting with restaurants and hotels, but its listed arrival involves a separate connection around the lake; compare that connection with your luggage and plans.
How can I check a Taiwan hotel or homestay?
Use the official TaiwanStay legal-accommodation search and compare the name and address with the property you plan to book. Confirm the particular room and booking conditions directly; a facility filter is a useful lead rather than a promise for every room.
Does a hot-spring hotel booking include a bath?
Confirm that with the particular provider before booking. Ask which facilities are included, whether a separate reservation is needed and how the hotel connection works; the area name alone does not establish those arrangements.
