Singapore city and islands: a flexible 5-day itinerary

This five-day route suits a visitor who wants city streets and two different island landscapes without changing hotels. It pairs a central waterfront introduction with Chinatown, then gives Pulau Ubin and the Southern Islands their own days. The order is adjustable: boats and weather determine the island outings, while the city days provide flexibility. Keep your luggage on the mainland and reserve the departure day for a short local visit.

Suggested time
Five days, with arrival and departure kept lighter
Where to stay
City Hall for one central base; Katong if the eastern outing matters most
Season and timing
Rain and thunderstorms can interrupt outdoor days throughout the year. Check the forecast and operator notices before each crossing.

The short answer

Use one mainland base, spend days one and two in the city, day three on Pulau Ubin and day four on the Southern Islands if conditions allow. Day five is a short neighbourhood morning before departure. Swap a city and island day when needed; do not move a ferry outing to the flight day.

Day 1: arrive, settle in and choose one waterfront segment

Transfer from Changi Airport to your hotel, leave your bags and eat before setting out. Start with a manageable Marina Bay promenade segment, choosing the end point before walking. Keep the first evening flexible after a long flight. A waterfront meal and return to the hotel are enough; paid attractions can wait for a day when you are rested.

Day 2: Chinatown, lunch and the Singapore River

Give Chinatown the morning rather than treating it as a quick photograph stop. Choose a few streets, pause over lunch and leave space to look inside places that are open to visitors. Continue with one Singapore River segment in the afternoon. This is your principal mainland buffer day: move it later if the forecast makes today better for an island crossing.

A chicken-rice lunch separates the two walks. If rain persists, shorten the river outing and spend the remaining time on an indoor visit whose opening and admission you have checked. Avoid replacing one cancelled excursion with several hurried bookings.

Make time for the local food

What to eat and where to look

01

Kaya toast

Toast with a sweet coconut spread, often served in a breakfast set.

Where to look
Current coffee-shop menus near your mainland hotel.
Fit it into your day
Use it for breakfast before a nature or island outing; arrange a separate main meal.

Check egg, dairy and accompanying items with the seller.

02

Chicken rice

Chicken with fragrant rice and separate condiments.

Where to look
Current hawker menus during the Chinatown or central-city day.
Fit it into your day
Make this a seated lunch between walking segments.

Check stock and sauces; a plain-looking serving is not an ingredient guarantee.

03

Laksa

A rich, spicy noodle soup with curry broth.

Where to look
Current mainland hawker or coffee-shop menus; consider it on the Katong day.
Fit it into your day
Choose it as a main meal after the neighbourhood walk.

Ask about shellfish, seafood stock and spice before ordering.

Day 3: Pulau Ubin from the correct mainland gateway

Travel to Changi Point Ferry Terminal at Changi Village, not to the Southern Islands terminal. NParks describes privately operated bumboats that leave on demand; confirm the boarding and return arrangements before crossing. On Ubin, choose the village and a selected public nature route rather than attempting every quarry and boardwalk.

Walking and kayaking are different day plans. If you book kayaking, check the island meeting point, whether the crossing is included and the equipment requirements; let it replace part of the land walk. Stay on designated trails, leave wildlife alone and avoid forest during or immediately after heavy rain. Plan your main meal on the mainland after returning.

When checked on 2026-10-03, NParks reported a partial closure of the Chek Jawa Coastal Loop. The Mangrove Loop and other open sections remained available. Check the current Pulau Ubin notices before choosing the trail; this is not a closure of the whole island.

Day 4: a separate Southern Islands outing

Use Marina South Pier for this day and confirm the operator’s current route before buying. On 2026-10-03, Singapore Island Cruise’s body notice said St John’s main jetty was closed and boarding used Lazarus; its displayed sequence linked Lazarus and Kusu before returning to the mainland. Do not assume unrestricted shuttling or a reverse connection from Kusu.

Pick one main island focus, carry the food and water needed for that choice and establish the return sailing before walking away from the landing. An island visit does not guarantee suitable swimming conditions, boats or wildlife sightings. If weather or service notices prevent the outing, use the mainland buffer for a shorter city visit instead.

Day 5: a short neighbourhood visit and departure

If your flight allows, choose Katong and Joo Chiat for a single neighbourhood walk and a laksa meal. If the available window is small, eat near your hotel instead. Agree luggage storage and collection arrangements with the hotel, then check the airport journey for your actual terminal. Keep this day independent of any ferry connection.

Book components around the route

Keep one hotel booking for the whole stay. The linked Pulau Ubin kayaking collection is an optional activity for day three, not a five-day package or a Southern Islands ferry ticket. Compare meeting points and cancellation terms before committing. With only five days, retaining one island outing after a weather disruption is a reasonable outcome; forcing both into the remaining time can undermine the return plan.

Practical questions

Can I visit both island groups on one day?

This route gives each its own day because they use different mainland gateways and return arrangements. Combining them would remove the flexible city buffer.

Which ferry terminal should I use?

Pulau Ubin uses Changi Point Ferry Terminal. The Southern Islands outing uses Marina South Pier; confirm the selected operator and current landing notices.

Should I stay overnight on an island?

This itinerary uses a mainland hotel throughout. Any island overnight would need a separately verified accommodation and return plan.

What happens if an island day is cancelled?

Swap with the mainland Chinatown and river day if possible. Otherwise drop that outing and keep the flight day free of ferry dependence.
