Kaga Onsen: choosing a hot-spring town near Kanazawa
JNTO introduces Kaga Onsen’s four hot-spring towns, each with its own public bath and character. Put the experience that matters to you first, then give the meal and the journey enough room. The route below is a planning suggestion; confirm the current arrangements for the places you choose.

- Suggested time
- One or two nights
- Where to stay
- Your chosen hot-spring town, rather than the station by default
- Season and timing
- All-season bathing; choose walks according to local conditions
The short answer
Start with one or two nights. Decide whether your stay centres on a town bath, a wooded walk or a lakeside setting, then choose accommodation within that experience. Choose the base and the meal around the main visit, then confirm the local connection before adding another area.
Four towns require a choice
JNTO introduces Kaga Onsen’s four hot-spring towns, each with its own public bath and character. Yamashiro, Yamanaka, Katayamazu and Awazu should be compared as possible bases rather than four compulsory stops. Decide whether your stay centres on a town bath, a wooded walk or a lakeside setting, then choose accommodation within that experience.
Yamanaka for a walk-and-bath rhythm
Yamanaka’s setting gives a stay a different feel from a station-based excursion. Look at the current walking route and the public-bath information before choosing the day. Keep the outing gentle if your main reason for staying is relaxation. A lunch, a landscape walk and a bath can form a complete day without moving through every neighbouring onsen.

Make time for the local food
What to eat and where to look
Ryokan dinner
Compare the inn’s actual menu and serving arrangements; an onsen stay need not include the same course everywhere.
- Where to look
- Current menus and official visitor listings near your selected Kaga Onsen route.
- Fit it into your day
- Choose this as a deliberate meal or snack near the main visit. Check the preparation and ingredients before ordering; leave time to reach your next connection.
Regional seafood
Look for menus identifying the preparation and origin; availability varies with supply and season.

Yamashiro and Katayamazu offer other settings
Visit Kaga presents Yamashiro and Katayamazu as distinct areas, with Katayamazu’s lake scenery among its attractions. Compare the town surroundings as carefully as the accommodation’s bath photographs. A room outside the walkable centre can be attractive, but confirm dinner, transfers and how you reach the public bath or other places you want to experience.
Kagaonsen Station is the gateway
Train arrival still requires the journey to the chosen town. Establish the bus, taxi or accommodation transfer before committing to an arrival time. If you add a craft visit or another district, check its location separately. On departure day, leave enough time to reach the station rather than assuming a ryokan checkout leads straight onto a train.
Give the meal a place in the route
Choose a seated meal near your planned visits and keep an alternative nearby if the restaurant is full. Compare the dish, portion and price on the current menu. If ingredients matter, ask about broth, sauce and preparation as well as the main item.
Choose a guided experience for a clear reason
A guided experience is worth comparing when it adds explanation, gives you access to a properly arranged activity or solves a difficult local journey. Read the route and meeting point before buying: a title naming Kaga Onsen does not establish where the outing starts. Ask how much time is spent at the main visit, whether admissions and meals are included, and what happens if conditions change. For a simple independent walk, the official visitor information may be all you need; spend on the part of the day you want to understand more deeply.
Practical questions
How much time should I allow for Kaga Onsen?
One or two nights. This is a planning starting point; allow more time if you choose an additional area or a slower visit.
Which hot-spring town should I choose?
Compare Yamashiro, Yamanaka, Katayamazu and Awazu by setting, accommodation and the walk or bath experience you want. They are alternative bases, not compulsory daily stops.
Is Kagaonsen Station the same as the inn area?
The station is the gateway. Confirm the bus, taxi or accommodation transfer to the town you have chosen.
