Buriram travel guide: Phanom Rung, Muang Tam and the volcano park
Buriram's great sight is Prasat Hin Phanom Rung, a pink sandstone Khmer sanctuary on the summit of an extinct volcano, which TAT calls the largest and best-restored Khmer site in Thailand. Nearby Prasat Muang Tam is one of the finest temples in the region. Today the province is also known for sport: a football stadium and the circuit that hosts MotoGP.

- Suggested time
- 1–2 days
- Where to stay
- Buriram town; or near Phanom Rung for an early start
- Season and timing
- November to February is coolest; the sunrise alignment at Phanom Rung falls in April and September (sunset in March and October).
The short answer
Give Buriram one or two days. Spend a morning at Phanom Rung, about 60 kilometres south of the city, then visit Prasat Muang Tam nearby. In town, climb Khao Kradong, an extinct volcano with a large Buddha image. Time your trip for one of the four yearly dates when the sun shines through Phanom Rung's 15 doorways if you can. Buriram has an airport with flights from Bangkok.
Phanom Rung
Prasat Phanom Rung was built of pink sandstone at the top of Phanom Rung mountain, about 1,320 feet above sea level, according to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports' directory. It was a Hindu sanctuary dedicated to Shiva, later used in Mahayana Buddhism. TAT notes that it stands on an extinct volcano 60 kilometres south of the city, with views on clear days to the Dangrek Mountains in Cambodia.
The sanctuary is laid out on a single east–west axis. Walk up the processional way with its naga bridges and stairs to the central tower, and look for the carved lintels above the doorways.
The sun through 15 doorways
Four times a year, the sun shines straight through all 15 doorways of the sanctuary. The directory gives sunrise in April and September and sunset in March and October; TAT describes the annual Phanom Rung festival, usually held around the first weekend of April, with processions, light shows and local markets.
Exact dates and times vary. Check with the park or TAT before planning around the alignment, and expect crowds.

Prasat Muang Tam
A short drive from Phanom Rung, Prasat Hin Muang Tam — 'the stone castle of the low city' — is considered the third most significant Khmer complex in Thailand by size, architecture and restoration, according to TAT, which dates it to the late 10th and early 11th century under King Jayavarman V, with Shiva and Vishnu as its deities.
Its brick towers, walls and L-shaped ponds are quieter than Phanom Rung. Visit both on the same day.

Khao Kradong
Just outside town, Khao Kradong Volcano Forest Park is an extinct volcano whose crater is still clearly visible, as the directory describes. TAT notes that you can drive up the 265-metre hill or climb 297 steps to the large seated Buddha image and a replica of the Buddha's footprint.
Go in the late afternoon for the view over the plains.

Football and MotoGP
Buriram's modern 'castles' are the stadium of Buriram United, which offers tours, and the Chang International Circuit. TAT confirmed that the circuit hosts the opening round of the 2026 MotoGP World Championship, from 27 February to 1 March, under an agreement running to 2031.
Hotel rooms fill up on race weekends; book early or avoid those dates if you are coming for the temples.
